Similar to A & W, but unlike any A & W I've been to from 1980-forward, these still have the drive-in parking spots, where the girls (no roller skates, sadly) bring the grub out to you. The Portland area now has almost no reason to leave because a Sonic has finally opened in Hillsboro. I experienced Sonic in Texas on a business trip based on my man's recommendation (and flew home with a few Coney's for him, too), then found one on a road trip through Boise, then Salt Lake City, and finally even on a trip to Reno, but I never thought there would be a day when I could drive less than many, many hours to reunite with all that is chili cheese heaven. And then it happened late in 2006. After driving out on weekends sometimes to see the progress of the building, one day there were cars lined up forever, and it was finally open. I went about 3 times that week. An Extra Long Chili Cheese Coney with Chili Cheese Tots and a Blue Coconut Slush is just as wonderful as it sounds. The burgers aren't bad either. Any place that sells tots quickly gets an extra star or two from me, and serving breakfast all day (because my stomach doesn't always know what time it is and likes breakfast all hours) also gains a star or two. Being able to pull up into the stalls and sit in your car to eat is just neat, and the carhop thing is cool, too. I would give it half a star less for not being super fast (maybe the drive-thru is, but I've only gone to the stalls to strap on my feedbag, and it can take awhile) and maybe another half a star less for being a little spendier than other fast food (that's what happens when you want to add chili and cheese to everything and also order a Frito's Chili Cheese Wrap), but I can't make myself remove a star when I think of all there is too love. Once in a while I see those Sonic Drive In commercials on TV & I think, Why do they have to tease you? when its like a 185 mile drive from SEATTLE, WA..... I drove 179.58 miles from WA, where I live just to visit this place. It almost felt like I was in a movie similar to Harold & Kumar's White Castle Movie. Disappointment. I read the reviews. I tried really hard not to be excited. I didn't order the cheesecake bites or the onion rings or the burger. But still... disappointment. So, I've been wanting to go here since I saw they were building this place... and honestly, even before that - thanks to their ridiculous commercials. Anyway, we decided to eat here on an unexpectedly sunny Sunday afternoon in October and I was super hungry! We ordered: - chili cheese coney dogs (extra long for Sam, regular for me), - tater tots (with cheese), - Ched-R peppers (jalapeno poppers filled with cheddar cheese - as they should be! - no cream cheese poppers for me, thanks), - coke with lemons (they're fresh!) for me, - and a large banana pudding shake (love those 'Nilla wafers on top!) for Sam. Sounds good, right? Well, not so much. The hot dogs were skinny and the chili seemed trans-fatty (according to trans-fat-averse Sam)... the actual melted cheese instead of cheese sauce was nice, though. So, the coney dogs tasted not so great (can't hold a candle to A&W even). The tots came without cheese, but were still yummy! The poppers and coke were also nice. The coke was especially nice and lemon-y. Sam said the shake was not good - ice bits were in there... sad. He suspects the shakes come from a machine. He recommended against me getting a shake or blizzard-type thing for dessert. So, I'd go back for the tots, poppers and coke. The ranch dipping sauce was also passable. Maybe I'll branch out and try other beverages with fresh limes or fresh lemons - but no cherries for me, thanks. Also, the slushes might be nice on a warmer day. Cherry limeade still calls to me because everyone seems to love it, but I'll have to work up to it, I think. The service was quick and the servers were nice, but nothing overly special. (Where's the roller skates?) I was intrigued by the condiment tray, but it came around too late to be of any use. (To be fair, our server did offer to bring out condiments when they brought the food... she just didn't mention they had a large round tray with a huge array of sauce packets and dipping containers.) The "patio" area was fun with outdoor heaters to keep us warm. (It did get a bit hot for Sam as the afternoon sun slanted into the area.) It was fun to see who else was sitting in the seating area - a large extended family, two 'tween (ha!) girls on bicycles, three high school boys, a group of twenty-somethings with a chocolate lab and another family as we were leaving. It was fun... but not the deliciousness I'd hoped to experience. It wasn't even passable drive-in fare. Oh, and I was still hungry after that, but rather than risk getting more meh food, we went through the drive thru next door at the A&W-KFC combo restaurant where I got a KFC snacker and cheese curds at ate it at a nearby park. Driving to start my sixth day of work for the week, I dediced that I would stop and get a Sonic drink to last me the day. I haven't had one in quite a while, so I decided I would treat myself to a delicious Route 44 Lemonberry slush. I pulled into the drive thru and a girl came onto the intercom and asked for my order. I told her, "I would like a Route 44 Lemon Berry slush, no limes, with an extra cherry". Nothing for about 30 seconds and I was asked to repeat my order. I repeated again what I wanted, when the girl said, quite curtly, "We don't make them with limes". In the past I have had several, with limes, and I just did not want them. Really, all I wanted was an ice cold drink to make my ten hours of work start a little easier. I started to tell her this and was interrupted with her reiterating that fact. I told her that if she would not make it the way I wanted it (much to your company's creed about mixing and matching drinks) and I was fine and drove off. I thought about this for about 10 mintues, fuming, on my way to work, and decided to call and speak with the manager. Upon answering the phone, I asked to whom I was speaking to, and was responded to quite rudely, "Heather, who's this?". I told her I was the guy that she just angered in the drive through and asked to speak with her manager. She told me she was the manager. Wow. Excellent customer service skills. Needless to say, our conversation went nowhere immediately and almost two days later I am still extremely upset. If your drinks didn't make me a happy person, I swear, I would never go back to another Sonic again in my life. More than likely, I will return, but I actually might think about making the 15 miles drive to the store in Tigard, versus having the possibility of dealing with an employee (much less a supervisor) like Heather. Ironically, having stopped my the Hillsboro location on my way to work over the years at about 6:00 in the morning, recently I stopped by and was told, again quite rudely, that the location wasn't opened until 6:30 am. I asked if this was a new thing, and she (Almost 100% positive, still Heather) said, "Sir, we don't open until 6:30). I invited Sonic to contact me for a discussion about this experience from the customer's point of view and please explain to me why Heather is actually in charge of anything except taking out the garbage. read more

I was floored when I found Sonic had come to Portland (metro). The one thing I regretted leaving in Arizona was here...life was complete. Many memories were created at the drive-ups of those oasis and leaving was difficult...the cravings were hard to beat. Slushes, foot-long Coney's and tater-tots. A simple recipe for happiness. Tastes like sweet onions, they don't fall apart with just a bite. Carl's Jr on 185th are the worst rings. Overcooked and crumbly. (2-4p daily) - The Strawberry Limeade is a staple, but its light on the strawberry flavor because they use actual blended strawberries. dont expect artificial strawberry soda levels of taste. but they use the mini cubed ice which keeps drinks extra ice cold! -our staff server still used roller blades which was nice. -the deluxe cheeseburger off the value menu is pretty satisfying with a fatty, fried old school hamburger taste. not extremely meaty, but still worth the 1.49! -fries (not tots) are so-so, they came a little off-warm, but i think these would be really good if piping hot. * make sure to get the fry sauce with the fries. and put on everything. including happy hour drinks if so desired. read more

I've seen all these commercials about Sonic and had never been to one. So when I saw this one I went to it. I ordered a corn dog, fried Mac&cheese appetizers, and a cranberry lime drink. When it came to the car hop spot I had to help the car hop make change for a $20 on a $4.88 order, she wanted to give me two five and change. The corn dog didn't have any condimints, but drink was very good. So not condiments, no napkins and the stuff is delivered just like as if you went thru a drive thru. I almost gave up on fast food before this grease-laden, orange-cream slush slingin' burger joint reeled me back in. Their chicken sandwiches, tots, and perfectly made hot fudge sundaes have been a late night munchie gift from above. This is the worst drive thru speaker system I have ever encountered. I do not have a speech impediment, however, every time I visit this location the people inside can not understand my order and invariably I end up screaming into the ordering box appearing daft and as if I am speaking to an elementary school child with a learning disorder. I do not appreciate the poor communication, especially when it's with people who apparently can not hear, do not speak English, or have not learned what they serve or what is on their menu. With such poor communication devices in place I can always assume somehow my order is not correct unless I make sure before leaving. Thus far, this location always leaves me feeling thoroughly dissatisfied and of an ill temperament. I can't give this a full 5 stars because I don't order the food here. I come here to quench my slushie craving (chocolate and cherry, please, and don't forget the cherry). I started coming here because I like the whole idea of my food or, in this case, drink being delivered by someone on roller skates. It's a throwback to yesteryears. The food looks and sounds good but I come here only for the drinks. Happy hour is the best. There is no indoor seating unless you're sitting in a car. Service is fine. Drinks are freakin delicious. Love this place and their onion rings are the best! My family and I try to go there when ever we are close! Love the Chocolate-Cherry Coke to wash those onion rings down with. The only criticism I would have is the bathrooms are sometimes not clean and the garbage calls always seem to be overflowing making it hard to throw your garbage away as you leave. Every year while visiting family in Beaverton the younger generation will sneak out and late at night or during happy hour and get our grub on! Before they opened a Sonics in Los Angeles this was one place I looked forward to since Oregon is green & beautiful but there isn't much to do! My sinful treats include the chili cheese tater tots, ched-r-peppers, and the fudge or banana cream pie shake. This year they changed the menu and took off the banana cream pie. I tried the strawberry cream chiller and I believe I have a new favorite. Its not as thick as a strawberry shake and has a sweeter-creamy taste. Mmm... salivating now! Oh and the strawberry lemonade chiller is a lot better than McDonald's. :D They have the New York Dog, Coney, Chicago and Chili cheese dogs which are also passable when craving something that is probably not good for you. I think I ordered a chicken sandwich once in a try to be healthy, but it was junk anyways. I don't think I've ever had their burgers. Come for the sweet treats and fried menu items, but don't expect your waist line to get any smaller. read more

I come here semi frequently (probably won't be coming back though). I went here to grab milkshakes and my partner, who is allergic to peanuts, found one in their Oreo shake and is now sick. I called Sonic to let them know what happened and the guy I spoke with wasn't concerned. Luckily it isn't a deadly allergy as others might have had a worse experience. Vomiting still isn't fun. Went in for my usual quick bite with the family, and ordered a couple of pretzel bacon dogs because BACON! Anyways, we get home with it and one of my dogs is loaded with bacon and onions, and the other looks like their bacon dispenser broke... It had a quarter of the bacon and onions that the other dog did. Consistency people! It was still pretty good.... The clincher was the Oreo shake with the Oreo flavor funnel (basically a frozen stick of Oreo goodness shoved down the middle of the shake)... thumbs up from me guys, that was absolutely grubbin! read more

First time at a Sonic and it was good. I liked the idea of having your own menu and ordering station. The drive-inn aspect is a great throwback. The food is what you would expect. They have a great selection of drinks and you can add a variety of additional flavors to any drink you order. Its not healthy by any means, but its a great once and a while treat for sure. read more

Came here and got some really poor service. Our carhop CJ can't take orders. He never asked us if we wanted sauce for any of our order. Even the stuff that comes with sauce. He rashes is through our Oder asking "Is that it?" After every item we order. I am so disappointed and disgusted from my last order which was two of the new double stuf Oreo cones. I was so excited to finely try these and when I finely did they were inedible , me and my husband had to throw them out. And its not that everything was bad. I came here with three friends on a spontaneous adventure away from work one Friday afternoon and enjoyed the Sonic Drive-In experience! This is the first and only Sonic I've been to so I found the whole concept of ordering and getting the food in the parking spot to be quite fun. In terms of food, it's really just what you might expect from a similar fast food joint. What I did enjoy however was their variety of milkshakes.
