I've been here a few times now. A few thoughts after these visits: 1. They are very slow service and prone to mistakes. The drive thru line is routinely backed up into the Safeway parking lot. I knew that whoever decided to put this in a Safeway parking area would look like a fool in short order. The walk up kiosks are also as slow if not slower. We had to wait almost 10 minutes with nobody in front of us before they said we could place our order (each time button pressed they said please wait on both kiosks). They forgot my drink and one of my motzarella sticks at the drive thru once. 2. Food is pretty good, but nothing life changing. I'd put it on par with Wendy's or Jack in the Box. I don't get the hype, personally. 3. They don't seem to have any advertised specials on their food for those trying to stretch their dollar, with the exception of their happy hour for drinks...which I'm not sure if they do here in Maui. Overall, I'd say give 'em a try but plan for it to take a long time and don't plan for the food to be so good that it justifies such a long wait. They need to figure out something to speed up the orders. They have a small army of staff. read more

Overly-hyped. Overly-priced. Underly-staffed. Sonic is a fast food chain from the mainland which has pretty decent food for the price...in the mainland. When this Sonic opened in Kahului, in the same parking lot as the Kahului (Hookele) Safeway and Safeway Gas Station, my plan was to let it go a couple of months due to the crowd wanting to try this new place. This was the first Sonic in the State of Hawaii and this meant the place would be pretty crowded right after it opened. I would drive by and see the entire right lane on Hookele blocked with vehicles trying to use the drive-thru. Didn't realize that these poor customers were waiting forever for their orders until I drive thru one morning. 2 drive thru lanes, only 1 occupied. As I pulled into the 2nd lane, I watched the other car to see if they were ordering. Nope, they were not. At first I thought maybe they were closed, then I saw the customer talking at the speaker. Then he waited...and waited...and waited! I also waited. I said hello to the speaker and a nice female employee came on to apologize and said she would be with me in a little bit. Then I waited...and waited! I was getting ready to back out but was now blocked in by another vehicle. After about 20 minutes total, the first car drove forward but nothing happened on my speaker. The guy behind me got out of his car and came up to mine to ask if they were closed. I told him they were open but they asked me to wait. The employee thought I was talking to her and came on to apologize, saying again she would be with me in a little bit. By this time, I was pretty peeved but decided to wait it out so I can make a final determination if I'd come back again. After a half hour, yes, literally a half hour, she took my order and I ordered the Teriyaki burger and a chili dog. The order came up to over $20, which was almost twice the price as the mainland, but hey, it's Maui and I guess when you ship food here, once it passes a certain point of the ocean, the value doubles. I drove forward, only to see 3 vehicles, including the guy who was in the other lane, waiting in front of me. I waited another 10 minutes then someone walked out carrying my order. She gave it to me and I drove out. Upon eating my order, the food was as bland as you can imagine, but worse! The Teriyaki burger had no, absolutely none, teriyaki taste. There was Sauce on it but it definitely didn't taste like teriyaki (which is a special flavor available only in Hawaii). The chili dog was also bland and the chili, what little of it there was, was very bland and unappetizing. I actually threw the food away. The only decent thing was the potato tots and the napkin, singular. One napkin. I really feel for the employees there because they remained pleasant although I guarantee they were catching heat from some of the customers. No wonder the drive thru lanes were empty when I went (at 10:30 in the morning). Nothing like the Sonics I've eaten at in the mainland and definitely not a place I'd visit again on Maui. Chick-Fil-A down the same road is a much better alternative for the same price! 2 stars only because of the employees pleasant attitudes. Other than that, I'm not sure you can even call the food edible! I appreciate the local owners bringing a mainland chain to Hawaii but if the food isn't consistent with that chain, it's a deal breaker for me. Sorry! read more

Drive through, quick service. Order was correct, even special orders. Food quality was okay. Not a great value for the taste.

So sad the service this morning. Ordered one burrito nothing more with an empty parking lot it took them 15mins to get my food out. Screen said carhop was coming but still sat in my car waiting for at least 5mins or more. read more

Honestly, the food is pretty unhealthy. It's not something you wanna be eating on a daily basis or even a weekly basis. I had the cheesy jalapeños and they were so hot and burned my lip. . They the crust was OK, but the inside filling was burning hot. The service was pretty fast from the time I placed my order to the time it arrived at you order through like a bank machine type system kind of like a drive-through. There's no in person ordering at the store and there's no one inside seating. You need to watch how you order. They were a lot of upgrades which will run your bill up overall, I think the food is expensive for what it is and simply not a good go value. read more

I told myself I wouldn't come back, but I did. Not because I wanted to but since we were already going there for a shake I figured I'd just get food as well. I asked myself, "what's the worst that could happen?" Lol don't ever ask yourself that because I feel like it's an invitation for issues. 1) We waited for about 25 minutes for our order and we were third in line. We got to the window, paid, got our order. To be fair I should have double checked the order- possibly opened up my burger to make sure it was correct. But I didn't and headed home. 2) Half way home I realized the burger isn't even the one I ordered. I had to google what the #3 looked like and it definitely wasn't it. I checked my receipt to make sure I ordered the combo #3 and yes I did. Instead they gave me a combo #1. Both combos differ in price btw. Immediately I called the store, spoke to Melissa and she offered a free meal or refund. I chose to get a refund instead. 3) once I arrived home I realized they didn't give me my drink. LOL I was like damn. I could've done my part and checked to make sure I had the drink at least. next time I'll check for sure. The food: some items are salty and others just lack taste... I'm not sure what it is but it's hard to enjoy it. The chili cheese fries had too much cheese and it wasn't appetizing. I love cheese, but I think it's the type of cheese they use that makes me not like it. I'd prefer to go to zippys for chili cheese fries instead or make my own at home. Customer service: there's room for improvement. As of right now, I took 2 bites from my sandwich and didn't eat the rest. I really tried to like sonic and wanted to give it another shot, but it's not working out for me. Came, Ate, Never Again. I ordered a #7 coney dog meal which is about $12. 1/2 qt hot dog with chili on top. Along with tater tots and a small drink (they consider Medium size) a bit overpriced in my opinion. Taste wise - my food was a bit salty too. It was okay nothing finger licking good. Also, ordered a small Oreo Cheesecake shake. Took one sip and total regret! It had an unusual taste to it. My sister got a lemonade slushy which was ok too. Sonic came in clutch. On a family vacation, and my boys were in desperate need of non-local food. My 9 year-old was relieved to get a good burger and crispy tots - just like at home (but came much easier because this Sonic got his order done right). I especially appreciated that they served breakfast all day - their sausage toaster was delicious and perfect (especially the egg). And since it's Sonic, have to have my chocolate shake. Tried two burgers one was a cheeseburger burger and the other was a teriyaki sauce burger. The teriyaki sauce burger was spicy and that's unusual. Won't eat that burger again. The cheeseburger was good. Service was ok. I had suggested no cheese on the teriyaki sauce burger and still got the cheese in the burger. Straws weren't given with drinks. Ambience can't say much since pulled up in the parking stall and ordered and ate in the vehicle. The hours of restaurant I think is great. Maui doesn't have much late open eateries. read more

Service here is horrible. The order taker rushes you while placing your order. The name on the receipt said Jonathan. He made us repeat ourselves over and over again. When we received our food, 95% of the order was wrong. It was our first time to Maui's Sonic and it was s*^% if I'm being honest. It makes the franchise owners look bad. We ordered a number one LARGE with a coke. Medium fries. A medium sonic blast CHOCOLATE snicker shake. And a number 3 burger only. We received a number one with a large coke. Medium tater tots. And a regular snickers shake (vanilla). No #3 burger. We waited so long. The fries were STALE and soggy. The burger looked like they threw it around a bit. The milk shake and soda was spilling on the sides. The ambiance of this place was weird. They hardly greet you. Everyone in the window seemed to be playing around. read more

Been to many Sonics from when I lived in Cali back in the day... Was working on a project here in Maui so my coworker and I wanted to check it out... the food was the same as I remember, chili was still salty but brought back good memories... TOTS, So good... Mixed drinks and Shakes, Onolicious... the 3star review is due to the lack of parking stalls (only 6-7, 1 being a handicap stall). None of there workers were on Skates or Rollerblades. Couldn't park and eat at the stalls, once you got your food, you had to bounce... The Sonic Experience was SHATTERED!!! The main building was 3-4 conex boxes slapped together with solar panels on top. The dark paint job didn't lively up the place, looked like a storage facility. read more

We had a double bacon cheeseburger meal and a Wacky Pack with chicken tenders, fries, and an apple juice. The burger was so cold that the cheese wasn't melted and was solid. It was barely edible because the meat was so thin, dry, cold, and old. Fries were limp and cold. They brought out the Wacky Pack without the apple juice. When I asked for the juice, the girl just said, "We're out of that," without any offer to replace it; I had to ask her if I could get something to replace it. She was visibly annoyed and asked, "What do you want instead?" She didn't even offer me any options until I asked her what they had. I opted for an apple sauce. I realized there also was no toy in the bag for the Wacky Pack (which was in a plain brown Sonic bag - boring and nothing Wacky about it) and asked her about that as well. She said, "We might just be out of toys." "It sounds like you're not sure, can you check?" She was visibly annoyed again and said, "You should have come earlier in the day, because we ran out." She didn't go back to check. Seriously?! Half the fun of kid's meals like these are the toys and the bag they come in (ala Happy Meals), so I asked if her if there was anything she could do to correct the situation. She got visibly annoyed again and said, "There's nothing I can do." "What about the manager?" The manager is busy, we can't do anything for you." Awful customer service. The least they could have done was tell me that they were out of two parts of the kid's meal before I completed my order. I would have been okay with that and ordered something else. For those two things, I paid $26. The food was NOT worth the price. Couple that with terrible service and you've got a recipe for disaster. Seeing all of the other reviews now, I see that the cold food and awful service is par for this "restaurant." Biggest disappointment and a real let down. No where near expectations after being gone from mainland for 10 years. The # 2 burger was cold and had no flavor and the chili cheese foot long long was horrible! Again cold, hot dog had no flavor, and definitely as I remember the wonderful warm overflowing chili and cheese on the dog w/onions. Sonic just opened. Many young teens are working here and I completely understand the work place when there is not many adults working. They are understaffed so I think we should respect everyone there for their hardwork because I know they are trying their best with the food and service. The food in my opinion is good especially the mozz sticks. I like the drinks they are delics! Once they die down, Hopefully their food will improve and their service too. I had never had Sonic before it come here to Maui. The first time I had it, I was surprised because it wasn't bad. I had a cheeseburger and tots. Went back again tonight and totally different food! The cheeseburger was cold, cheese was not melted at all. I had wanted onion rings, but we don't have them here, so hubby shared some of his fries with me.
