We have always wanted to try Sonic because of the different options and decided to give it a try! We waited in the drive thru for 35 minutes to order! We ordered our food I got a Coney Island hot dog and my husband ordered a bacon cheeseburger with only ketchup and mayo. We also got fries onion rings and two shakes. My husbands burger patty was rock hard and came with everything on it pickles tomato lettuce. The fries were way over salted and old. The onion rings were rock hard and tasted like they cooked them with something sweet as they had a sugary taste. The shakes were not drinkable neither. Needless to say all the food was thrown in the trash and we went home and ordered pizza. Don't waste your time it is definitely not worth it. read more

Better Than McDonalds I know I have spoken pretty harshly about Sonic lately. This is the first location to open in RI. I waited for basically 3 months and several foolish traffic jams in front of the place later to finally try this chain. I have to say the food is ok. Seems to be a better quality product than McDonalds or Taco Bell, but that isn't saying a whole hell of a lot. I recommend the place for a weekend late night burger fix when you be a bit inebriated and not be overly judgmental about quality and taste. The thing that boggles my mind is a chain restaurant that has the unique characteristic of a roller skate server car hop, building a location in a state that has bad weather at least 4 months out of the year. Pulled up to outside drive through ordering kiosk as person in front of me pulled up. After waiting almost 5 minutes, a car pulls up to the inside ordering kiosk and her order is taken right away. I blow horn, a second car pulls up to the inside and they take his order and a third. I yell to speaker and finally someone says can I help you. I tell them I was waiting for 5 minutes and they took orders for 3 people that came after me but no response. I ask if they are there, still no response. I finally back up to the side door and ask a waitress for a manager. No one comes out so after a minute or 2 I go in and a young girl who doesn't look old enough to work there tells me the manager sent her because they are soooo busy and I should be calm because I am an adult. I tell her again I want to speak to the manager and she tries to tells me he sent her. I then leave letting her know I am going to leave poor reviews on line and she says go ahead. Manager appears clueless. This is how sonic treats customers. They rarely get their orders right and have no use for the customers that pay their salaries. As everyone knows this place was packed for almost 2 months. Finally it has calmed down. Honestly the hype was overrated. I tried to give this place several tries and it wasn't my cup of tea. Yes I go here a lot but not for food ever just for their drinks that I'm madly in love with, the drink menu alone is long and I love it , but the food I don't. I had ordered the foot long hotdog and it tasted like a frozen mediocre hot dog, nothing at all was special about it , except the over priced price. My fiancé had the burger he said it was okay , and nothing fancy. The other thing that was good out the meals was the tater tots. We haven't tried the drive in yet, we have only been inside but if I don't enjoy the food so why would I do the drive in, the one good thing about this place are the workers they're sweet. The staff is friendly and the menu offers items not typically found at other fast food places, Ive tried to give them several chances, but I have never NOT regretted eating here., most often the order is screwed up,( ie bacon ordered no bacon) and I always end up very sick after eating, twice violently ill. We had never been to a Sonic before and because of all the TV ads we've had to sit through, we decided to stop in for lunch on our way to Jaswell Farm in Smithfield and see for ourselves what the hype is all about. We chose to sit inside instead of ordering from the drive thru (there was a very long line) or pulling into one of their bays and eating in our car, car-hop-style (there were a few parked in these, but we saw no servers on skates). Once inside, we noticed there were only a handful of customers dining in, although it was during the noontime hour on a Saturday. I should have taken this as a sign that nothing really special was going on here. Perhaps many deem the food not worth the trouble of getting out of their cars for. We both decided to get in on the Car Hop Classic deal with a quarter pound double cheeseburger and a medium order of tater tots for $2.99 each. We tacked on a small order of onion rings to share ($2.69), a small Ocean Water soda ($1.99), and a small Bahama Mama slush ($1.19). Our meals were delivered to our table by a friendly server in a reasonable amount of time, in Chick-fil-A fashion. He fetched us some of Sonic's signature sauce for our sides, as requested. Our bill, tax included, totaled $12.80. Our puny-looking cheeseburgers were tepid and quite messily thrown together---they tasted just like McDonald's burgers, but at least they each boasted two full slices of cheese! The onion rings weren't much better, but at least they were of hand-cut onions and not mulched and breaded. The tater tots were the best part of our meal. I hadn't had a tot since I was a kid, and these tasted quite good and much better than the frozen variety I recall. Their signature sauce, a barbecue sauce/mustard/mayo concoction, while nowhere near as good as Chick-fil-A's, was palatable and good for dipping the tots and rings in. The Bahama Mama slush Sis had was fruity and refreshing. I was quite disappointed in my Ocean Water, which tasted like 7Up with neon blue food coloring, and had no discernible coconut flavor at all (some reviews I had read likened it to a piña colada in soda form---it definitely was not!). Maybe we would have been happier if we chose some of the ice cream selections (shakes, floats, sundaes, cones, etc.) or selected dogs or chicken---I don't know. Maybe those things are why they have a following. It certainly isn't because of the burgers or the Ocean Water. Sonic's not really bad, but it's not anything to write home about. This sonic location gets a bad rap, but I've never had an issue here. There are times that I have waited longer than expected, but it was busy. My food orders have always been hot and correct. My drink and shake orders have always been cold and tasty. When I'm looking for a late night fix, this sonic is usually on my list. read more

I have been to this sonic five times and they are semi rude over the intercom like they have something better to do. The last time finally pushed me over to write this review. I got my son a happy meal and instead of a happy meal toy it was a sorry certificate for a ice cream cone for next time only at this location!! I was shocked and appalled that anyone thought that was acceptable!! No child wants that they want a toy and no one holds onto a certificate for a ice cream cone. They have two lanes for drive thru. Sat and waited at one for 5-8 mins. No one ever welcomed me or ask me to wait (I'd understand if it was busy) I even called out a few times in case they didn't know I was there. I had to drive around to try the second drive thru lane. Again no one welcomed or asked me to wait sat there for 3 mins then called out. That's when someone said they'll be with me. Once they took my order it was a bad attitude. It's fast food, so one doesn't expect a 5 star meal. However, being a fast food drive thru, you do expect some sort of quickness when ordering and then receiving food. I was the third car deep from the window, but sat 15 minutes in line from ordering to pick up. I know that there are "A" teams, who work well, fast, and have a rhythm. Then there are "B" teams, who are your second or third string, not your best, but can to the job. This crew...the "Z" team...as in Zombie... dead to the world. The food was awful. I ordered a cheese burger with the works, tots, and a soda. The burger was drenched in mustard, tots were soaked in grease, and I ended up with a large cup of ice with a little bit of soda. I come here specifically for the cherry lime aid's because their delicious! I've had the food once or twice and it was so-so. But the staff here is always great- super quick and very friendly. I usually just run in or use the drive thru- I've never used the drive in. I've never had an issue here. Also I've taken my son here for ice cream and it's always excellent. Okay, this place needs to hire more people and train them to know what to do when there are customers who are trying to buy food. I just went inside for he first time with the intention to eat in the dining room. There was no one at the counter and no way to call anyone. The food is good. It's probably my favorite fast food place, in terms of the taste of the food. Breakfast: French toast sticks and burritos are good. Lunch/Dinner: hot dogs and burgers. Oh, and try the tater tots and the cherry limeade. They have the full menu available all day so you can also mix and match. The shakes are probably good too but I can't have that much dairy. Their coffee could be better, which is surprising, since they use Green Mountain coffee. Maybe they make it too weak. But the service is very slow, as other reviewers have mentioned. So don't come here when you're in a hurry. Probably one reason they're slow is the fact that they have such a long menu. Check your order, too, since they often get things wrong. Today they forgot cream and sugar for my coffee. Whrn i finally got cream and sugar, they forgot a stir stick. Last time they forgot my soda. It also feels like they're ignoring you, since the kitchen is walled off from the register, so you can't just yell at a random employee if you need more condiments. I guess I could go bang at the kitchen window, but I don't like to be that guy. If they improved the speed of their service, I would come here more often. read more

I wish I could give it zero stars. We drove 45 mins out of our way to come here. Ordered 2 master blasts and a drink. 20mins later came out and the whole order was wrong. The dark skin guy with tattoos on his hands didn't speak anything to us, took the food back and we waited another 20mins to find out that "they thought we left". Really?!? So we had to reorder our drinks....... when we asked the lady who said we left, she didn't have an answer and said the 1st guy was new. I think it's common sense... really? A total of almost 50mins to just get 3 simple items. AND THEY STILL MESSED UP. By this time we didn't care and just left. Sonic is to Texas as Dunkin Donuts is to New England, we have one on every corner. I grew up with a love for this wonderful place, and was pretty excited when I found one in Massachusetts, and another not too far away in Smithfield. I found this location to be good. Service was quick, drinks were great (perfect balance of syrup and bubbles), which has not been my experience at the Sonic we have in Northern MA. The staff was pretty friendly and I even heard them giving a customer a heads up that there was going to be a short wait as they got a big order out. A+. read more

So now that the luster of not having to drive 90 minutes to sonic in northern Massachusetts has worn off, I can take this sonic for what it is; another fast food joint on Putnam pike. Thehy have a double drive-thru, though I'm not sure what the purpose of it is since you have to wait for the person next to you to finish ordering before you can order. It always takes at least 15-20 minutes to get through the drive thru, regardless of what you order. The employees are all nice, but the service is ridiculously slow. read more

I do not recommend. Understaffed, very disorrganized. I drive for food delivery app platforms for a living. The last time i went to pick up an order from this sonic I had to wait in over a 20 minute line. There is no separate pick up accommodation for Uber or door dash drivers. Then I asked for a drink for myself because I was very thirsty and I'm diabetic and they made me wait another 10 minutes and I never got my drink . I left to bring customer his food and then returned later to get my drink I had already paid for. This time I used the drive through which was much quicker. And don't you know they had the nerve to give me a bad feedback thumbs down on my Uber rating. Never again will I be eating at this sonic as a customer or picking up from them again. I already ordered here the tater tots, chilli cheese fries, footlong chili dog, grilled cheese, chicken wings (garlic , barbecue and spicy), strawberry milkshake (has real pieces of fruit on it). I usually give great reviews, and I just have to be straight forward and say this review is fair. I have been 4 times in 2 months because my wife loves the diet cherry lime aid and has had wonderful experiences at sonic when visiting family in North Carolina. Our food is wrong every time here and even when noone else is at sonic and 20 people are working inside it still takes 15 to 20 minutes to get a soft drink. That's all I ordered. A soft drink. A diet cherry lime aid extra cherries. At the window I was given a cheeseburger one time, next time a regular cherry lime aid extra limes no cherries, next time tater tots, and the final time I was charged for an extra shake, got extra limes and no cherries. Something is wrong there. It's either the staff, the management, or something else. Someone needs to be accountable to the offensive service there. If I can't get one drink right in four tries, I can't imagine what happens to a complex food order. Never again. read more

Despite being officially open for a few weeks, there was still a 50 minute wait for the drive thru (on a Sunday afternoon). I'm not sure if this is due to insufficient parking space, poor location planning, or larger than expected customer traffic. It's probably a combination of all of those things. Whatever the case ... I wouldn't hold the lengthy wait against them, if not for the fact that when I finally had my food in hand, it was barely lukewarm. If I had wanted a hastily thrown together burger with a side order of room temperature French fries, I would have gone to Burger King, and saved myself 45 minutes. The restaurant's car hop /nostalgia factor, doesn't do much for me. JOHNNY ROCKETS does the nostalgia thing far better, and is a more enjoyable experience with better food. A & W (right up the street from SONIC) has their version of the carhop, and has vintage car nights. Though, I believe they are closed during the winter months. Bottom line: My suggestion to anyone still interested in trying SONIC? Wait until the public furor dies down, and the salivating hordes disperse. Despite a lot of poor reviews of this place, we had a fine experience tonight. We pushed the button and waited a while. It must have timed out, so pushed again. Shortly thereafter our order was taken. The food did not take that long to arrive, food was hot, order was correct, and the guy who brought it was super polite. I think some folks must have caught it on a bad night. Every business has staff who call-out, sometimes at the last minute with no coverage. So I had to visit the new sonic that opened today!! We waited so long to have something special like this here in Rhode Island!! It's finally here and open!! We got here about 3pm on October 26 2015 and there was a line for about a quarter mile on 44 from the entrance!! There is a police officer directing traffic because it is so busy!! Also several other people directing you to the drive through or the canopy parking!! It is awesome and exciting at the same time!! So we were greeted by the owner and she is very pleasant!! We waited for about 20 minutes before we got to the canopy and it is well worth it!! So when you pull up to the canopy you will see some very nice touch screen order menus that are modern and very responsive!! After you are ready to order you push a button and a friendly person will take your order!! Plus the coolest thing you can pay right at the touchscreen!! About 10 minutes later the food comes out pipping hot!! We had the honor the meet Lexi!! She came with our food on roller blades!! She is very pleasant and very Efficient!! We had a number 11 with a New York hot dog and 2 sonic cheeseburgers and to wash it down a Blue Raspberry and Cherry Slushie!! This is an update for a previous experience. A second visit was enough to want to stop going there at least for a while. The staff continually gets the order wrong and food often comes out cold. Others in the dining room had the same experience. Burgers are over cooked, dried out, chewy, potato puffs bland, drinks average. Cashiers regularly leave the register leaving people to wait. The drive through was eternal, we were sitting in line for 10-15 minutes. There was one girl handling the drive through orders, and as an ex drive through employee, that is freaking stressful! I salute you for your hard work sister. The owners must be too cheap to hire somebody else. I can't think of another reason to not have two people working the window. The food is okay nothing special or too different from Burger King or McDonald's. It's not exceptionally fresh either. The ice cream was okay, they messed up my sundae order and gave me plain ice cream. In addition, the lavender berry shake only tasted like berries. The ice cream was a "meh." I would give their ice cream another chance just because their options sound yummy. However, the drinks! The drinks are great if anything I would always come back for the drinks.
