Feeling lucky today? Check out Sonka Irish Pub in Terre Haute, Indiana for tasty Irish food, cold brews, and fun Irish decor/vibes. Start off with some Blarney Stones (fried pickles), Bavarian Pretzel Sticks, or some Leprechaun Wings! Sonka's has a large menu ranging from spuds, to salads, burgers, sandwiches, soups, seafood options, meat & cheese boards, and more. I ordered the Tailless Surf & Blarney Turf: tailless shrimp and two Blarney Angus beef cheese burgers served with their homebrewed Irish chips & onion dip. Make sure to add Sonka Irish Pub to your food bucket list while you are in Terre Haute, Indiana!

Irishdilla with corned beef, potato cake, pepper jack cheese and bistro horseradish sauce

I played one of my favorite games, Yelp Roulette, and I found this highly rated Irish Pub. Parking was a little challenging because there is no parking lot but I found a spot on a nearby street. Sonka has all the decorations and everything you would expect from an Irish Pub...except one of my friends pointed out they didn't have Shepherd's Pie. But there is still a lot of good pub food here. I debated between a burger, sandwich, but I wanted something a little more unique. The Irishdilla caught my eye. It is a quesadilla stuffed with possibly the best corned beef I've had. I'm not a corned beef expert but it just had a moistness and good flavor to it. The corned beef sat on a thin potato cake patty with a horseradish style sauce with pepper jack cheese. The Irishdilla did not come with a side but the burgers and sandwiches come with chips and slaw. Something I loved about Sonka is the variety of sauces since I'm a sauceaholic. For that reason, I chose a half order of the onion tower with the french onion dip, BBQ ranch, and chipotle. Out of those 3 sauces, the BBQ ranch went the best with my onion rings. The french onion dip would be a worthy dip though with chips as it was thick and creamy. I made a mental note that boneless wings are 75 cents on Thursdays. I believe I will be back to try some wings and more offerings off of Sonka's menu.

A Terre Haute jewel for the downtown area with a rich and diverse history, Sonka offers good dose of Irish food pleasant atmosphere and drink for patrons who require a little downtime to relax and refuel. The bright colors and scrubbed clean atmosphere allow one to dine comfortably among friends and family. The Irish themed decor offers a visual splash vintage Irish at its best. Irish dishes are offered with a homemade flavor served hot and fresh. Irish stew was my choice. Made with puréed potatoes and lean cuts of beef seasoned perfectly this offered a glimpse into old world cookery. The pesto grilled chicken salad with fresh salad greens topped off with crunchy sweet fried onions was delicious. Prices were in line with our expectations Reinhold was a server. He attended us well and had a fun sense of humor. This alone makes a difference in any dining experience I wholeheartedly give 4 stars for this local gem.

Kind of a divy local pub but comfortable. We we were in Terre Haute for a play at Rose and stopped here for a bite before the play. Service was ok, not bad not great. We started with Loaded Cheese Fries. They should render the fat out of the bacon ( it was very fatty and soft ) fries and ranch dip were fine. Husband and I got burgers. They were really good nice size patties on a very soft bun. I was super happy the bacon on the burger was crispy. Chips weren't too thrilling. Onion dip tasted like Deans French onion dip. I'm not a fan but my husband liked it. I ordered a Root Beer Float for dessert. It was good. Husband ordered the fried Oreos. All four of us said the batter on the Oreos was heavy and ruined the cookies. He ate his ice cream and left 3 or 4 cookies. Would come back for the burger.

This was a pretty good local spot to grab beer & food! The atmosphere is fun with lots of Irish decor and a bar scene. Also, the number of beers available on tap is one of the most variety I've found in Terre Haute. I'm a big fan of sours, and there were 2 on tap that were delicious. We also ordered the pretzel board which was really good, but heads up it doesn't come with cheese dip, just a spread. We ordered a dip as well & both were tasty. I ordered a half grilled sandwich with chips. The chips are very good, but the sandwich came out cold which wasn't really expected when I ordered it hot. (But it still tasted fine) I've heard the fish is amazing, so I will definitely be back to try that menu option out!

Love Sonka's! I decided to visit today for lunch, after checking out the new Vigo County History Museum. We had been planning to go to Clabber Girl for lunch, but after we overheard some particularly loud museum visitors were heading there, we changed our plans and we were glad we did. Very welcoming bar, with a lot of seating (both inside and outside). We were greeted right away by the staff. They brought over the extensive beer list and the menu. A lot of delicious choices on both lists. My partner and I ended up ordering a Three Floyds IPA and a Stella Artois cider. Also the half sandwich and salad for her and the fish and shrimp platter for me. Jean loved her salad and sandwich and I really enjoyed the fish platter. The cod was perfectly breaded and so good. We had a really excellent server who knew the beer menu and was able to make suggestions to my partner who wanted something with low ABV. Not an easy task given that they have a very large beer list. We really liked the vibe of the place. Good music, not super loud, a couple of tvs with basketball games playing. Nice crowd of people of all ages (over 21). We were seated on the bar side, I am assuming they allow all ages on the restaurant side. The building was built in 1900 and the bar dates back to 1933. Terrific place, look forward to many return trips.

We live in Indianapolis and were in the area so we were really looking forward to trying this place. However, the food was overpriced and low quality. I ordered the Connemara Chicken. This restaurant uses boxed Idaho flakes for their mashed potatoes. The kind you just add water to... the ones that are kind of like a paste texture. I could tell right away. The chicken tasted reheated/chewy and unflavored. The sauce wasn't bad but it had a unique flavor. I liked the vegetables (I loved that they were cooked well and not al dente) but my partner said they tasted unflavored to her. Honestly, I was most disappointed by the mashed potatoes. I don't know how an Irish restaurant- or any restaurant - doesn't use real potatoes. Especially when the dish costs $19. For that price, dehydrated flakes are absolutely crazy. I know inflation is high but come on. My dollar matters too and when I decide to dine out on a rare occasion I'd like to be getting quality food. I asked the waitress- who was very attentive and sweet- if this is what they always use for potatoes or if it was an off day and she said they always make them with the Idaho box of flakes. Again, she was super sweet and very attentive. We had no issues with service at all. But using fake mashed potatoes at a restaurant is really disappointing. Especially for the price. Also, the water. The first glass of water we were given tasted normal. The refill tasted super weird so my partner mentioned it. The waitress told us she knows it's weird, apologized, and said that the water in one area of the restaurant tastes weird but the other area tastes fine. She offered to get us water from the "good" faucet after that which we appreciated. Odd to me that they are aware the water tastes off/bad (and have an alternative that's better) but still serve the bad stuff to customers. My partner did really like her tenderloin sandwich. It was crispy and had good flavor. The pub chips were okay but they didn't have seasoning and many were dry/airy and as though they may have been sitting a while. Kinda weird. We talked about possibly coming back when they have live bands to give it another shot and maybe just get an appetizer instead of entrees because we really did like the service and the vibe there.

Not only are dogs allowed to dine inside, but they offer water bowls AND a good doggie dining menu! This is especially great when the weather is cold (or too warm!) There were no complaints from my pup as she downed her 'Lucky' meal. Our waiter, John, mentioned that all of the doggie dining menu options were actually named after the owners current dogs! Cute touch! Service was warm and attentive (thanks John!) and they were incredibly accommodating on our food substitutions since I don't eat meat. I was also excited to see that they had a good sized menu with a variety of options-- sandwiches, burgers, salads, appetizers, hot dogs, and desserts. I wouldn't say it's a full 'dinner' restaurant, but great tasting, fresh, AND flavorful meatless options which are great for vegans/vegetarians. They had dedicated parking, patio area, an upstairs (I'm sure is amazing in the summer!) and clean restrooms. I even noticed signage in the women's restroom that encouraged safety for 'Angel shots' in case anyone felt unsafe and needed to communicate safely with the bartender for a ride home or the police! They also have live events, music, and great drink specials. It's right on Indiana State University campus so it could be missed, but don't overlook this gem! -- 5/5 from this Pup Mom

It's dated in the best possible way: dim lighting, worn-in character, familiar faces, and that unmistakable local hangout atmosphere where regulars clearly outnumber first-timers. The highlight here is the Tweety Burger, and honestly, that's the reason to come. It reminded me immediately of the classic Midwest style you'd find at places like Minor-Dunn in Highland, Indiana. The patty is smashed thin and cooked flat on the grill, giving it those crispy edges and deep, savory flavor you only get from a well-seasoned griddle that's seen years of use. It tastes homemade--not engineered, not trendy, just a straightforward burger done right. You can tell they take their time with the food. Nothing feels rushed or mass-produced. The burger comes out hot, flavorful, and satisfying without trying to be gourmet or overcomplicated. No towering Instagram presentation--just a solid, honest burger that delivers exactly what you want from a local pub. Service matched the vibe perfectly. The staff were personable, welcoming, and genuinely friendly in that small-town way that makes you feel less like a customer and more like a guest stopping by a neighborhood spot. Charlie's isn't flashy. It's not modern. And if you're looking for upscale dining or trendy décor, this isn't the place. But if you want an authentic mom-and-pop tavern experience with a burger that locals clearly treat as a tradition, it's worth the stop. Best advice: stick with the Tweety Burger. Don't overthink the menu. Order it, enjoy the atmosphere, and experience a piece of local Terre Haute character. Not a destination restaurant--but absolutely a solid local classic you should try at least once.
