It's been 20+ years since I've stepped foot in this pub. The food, atmosphere & service is just as good as it was back then. I couldn't come & not get the Irish Steve & a Guinness. I happened to be here on a Thursday, which is their .75 boneless wing day. They've got 4 tasty sauces to choose from. I particularly enjoy the garlic parmesan & the leprechaun sauce. (Buffalo). The stew did not disappoint. Tender meat & potatoes. I hit it with a little Lea & Perrin's Worcestershire sauce & pepper. Delicious! It's served with wheat bread now. It used to come with a couple slices f dark rye. The portion size is smaller than it used to be too, but such as life. I've enjoyed my walk down nostalgia lane & I'll be back. read more

What a great bar! Food and drink lists are extensive and amazing! Service was excellent but I was a little taken aback to have to show 2 pieces of ID (I actually thought it was a joke at first!). My husband and I shared a cheese and meat platter and it was SO good! Next, I had the antipasto salad and a cup of the Irish stew and my husband had the cod sandwich, all wonderful! We had high hopes for this establishment because of the reviews. Maybe we caught them on a bad night or just was served by a bad employee. Initially we were greeted friendly by a young woman and decided to sit at the empty bar on a Friday at 7 PM. Our 'waiter' was a gentleman in a green shirt behind the bar. He seemed irritated that we even sat at the bar, he was condescending, and seemed bothered by any questions we asked about the menu. It made me feel Unwelcome and like I was a bother....even though we spent money in their customer service establishment. To make it worse the food was less than I expected. The burger patties were a great size but the meat was more like meatloaf than a burger and the 'famous' dip tasted bland. I hate to leave a review like this but our waiter ruined the whole experience. It seemed like the other employees were generally happy and upbeat but it felt like they still tip toed around him. First time in for a bite to eat. I drive by nearly everyday and had never dropped in. The Reuben sandwich was good. Not the best I have had, but for a Reuben, you have to have the right components. Good bread, good meat, good sauerkraut and good dressing. Sonja had it all. I choose the slaw over the chips which proved to be a good choice. The onion rings on the side were beer battered and hit the spot. The staff were very attentive, checking frequently on my needs. Glad we decide to stop on our way home, called the bar to see if they'd be playing the MSU basketball game and they happily accommodated our request. Great beer selection, the chips and dips are to for and we were rather impressed with our food for the price not to mention everyone was very friendly! This place is a great gem. I enjoyed the atmosphere and love that they allow pets in the pub. The staff was attentive and friendly. A nice selection of craft beers and great pub food. I've been here a couple of times. First time I ordered a Cod Rueben and a Founders Cream Stout. Both were fabulous! Today I had a few Black and Tan paired with a cheese board: salami,turkey, Stilton Blue and Irish Cheddar with porter brew. They added crackers, pickles and olives! What a beautiful pub meal. Everyone I've seen serving is smiling. It's busy tonight so service is a little slow, but everyone is having a good time. I see lot's of students eating wings... Next time. read more

If you're a wing fan, I would definitely recommend coming here on a Tuesday for their special (they have more flavors this day). And definitely invest in an appetizer. Went on Thursday which was wing night. 75¢ wings. Had 4 flavors, Sonka famous Buffalo leprechaun (something) basically buffalo, garlic parmesan, chipotle citrus bbq, and mango habanero. I got the Buffalo & bbq & they were both delicious!! It was a very fun & unique little bar. Great little hangout place with friends. Was told it was dog friendly which is fun news. Drink specials that night were on colors & some sort of red ale brew, would've been nice to have some sort of mixed drink/liquor special as well. Before I moved away from Terre Haute, some 10 years, I never went to Sonka's. In fact, my wife from Wisconsin was taken there by a colleague before I ever stepped a foot inside. I feel robbed. Sonka's has what few places in Indiana have, good beer AND good food. I'm a sucker for German beer and it's hard to get in Indiana because of strange import laws. Sonka's doesn't care and found a way to get Franziskaner on Tap, or even Paulaner. The whole vibe speaks to me. Hometown bar with a lot of culture and care. The Reuben is top five. Their Leprechaun sauce is tasty, but not terribly spicy. I always visit when I'm back in town. I've never had a bad experience. Downtown Wabash has come a long way back into the spotlight and with so many options popping up, Sonka's stands strong. My parents enjoy looking out the window and seeing empty bars while Sonka's is busier than all of them. It's a true testament to the culture they've built. Parking in never fun on busy streets, but look to the neighborhood next door, but respect the people that live there. Get there early and stay awhile. Talk to the staff, make friends, and become a real Hautian. Sorry it took me so long. read more

Staff was super nice and helpful. The drinks were really different and tasted really good, we had the blueberry bong water (it made me laugh so I had to get it) and it was delicious! I'm usually not the biggest fan of blueberry flavored drinks but it was so good. We ordered 10 of the wings on their special night, Thursday, so they were on $.75 each and they were cooked perfectly. We got the signature spicy leprechaun and the garlic parm and they were both super good. Plus it's really cool that they have such a variety of sauces for the fries/chips specials. It makes it fun since you can choose from a wide variety of tastes. Also, best thing.... they have shuffleboard! Definitely love the food, drinks, and atmosphere of this place and will definitely be coming back! read more

Excellent bar and awesome menu! If you are looking for a place to go hang out of an evening Sonka is one of the best spots in town. If you are looking for a great meal, Sonka has a wide selection of amazing food - not your average pub food here. Excellent owner who knows what the hell is going on! The only thing it is lacking is a few nice TV's. Just not that kind of place, they don't want it to be a sports bar. So I get it - just wish Sandy would invest in a couple nice TV's. My personal favorite is the huge Spicy Leprechaun Chicken Salad and the Full Cheese Plate ($$). Sonka's takes precautions and really does a great job trying to be as safe as possible. The service us always excellent, prices are reasonable, and the staff is beyond friendly. Before this horrible experience i have been in this pub numerous times and always had slow service and cold food.. Last Saturday i went in there for lunch with a friend and had no issues and wasnt even carded. Went there later with more friends for dinner and not only were we all carded which isnt a issue but they refused us service because they wanted TWO Forms of Identification. Said it was Owners policy. Been to hundreds of bars and clubs this is the dumbest rule ever! Service is also slow, food always comes cold after a long wait. You want a refill? Good luck with that! They lost at least 10 customers for good that night and growing! read more

The ONLY place in Terre Haute to get a properly poured Guinness. An honest to goodness actual poured from a tap Guinness. Not a can poured into pint glass. This, in itself, makes it great. While traveling to a new place, I always like to try a local restaurant. Sonka Irish Pub could not have been a better choice! The waitstaff was very friendly and accommodating, and not overly so where you get bothered. I ordered the horseradish gouda chicken sandwich and it was delicious! Chicken was fork tender and the amazing gooey cheese had so much flavor,especially when paired with grilled red onions. They also give you a choice of chips with homemade onion dip or coleslaw... We met our friends at Sonka for dinner and drinks. We were traveling with our pet parrot and called ahead to make sure that she would be allowed indoors. Not only did they allow her inside, but she was allowed to come out of her carrier, sit on her perch and really enjoy dinner with the rest of us. For dinner we had fish and shrimp with spicy Leprechaun sauce and Black & Bleu burgers and chicken. All were excellent. For dessert we shared a plate of Shamrock Stones with ice cream because no one had enough room for dessert but we all wanted a taste. Our friendly waiter kept the wine and craft beers flowing for us throughout the evening. We couldn't have been happier! I can't wait until we get to come back through Terre Haute again. We will certainly stop by Sonka Irish Pub again! read more

Seriously I can't say enough glowing things about this place, and I'm not the customer in search of the best craft beer or the person who saunters in for green beer on Saint Paddy's, but from observation I can report both of those are provided in droves. Have I mentioned yet that this place allows dogs? THIS PLACE ALLOWS DOGS. Your dog can sit at a table with you and order a meat plate to split with the cute dog across the room. Be sure to grab a big hand full of peanuts as you walk into the door because you may want to stay a while. The atmosphere will make you feel like you stepped into the TV show "Cheers"- where people are friendly, down-to-earth, and just having a good time. I can confidently say that Sonka's has more beer on tap than any other bar in Terre Haute. From your collection of American and Micro standards to unique and seasonal Imports that will be hard to find anywhere else for a good 50 miles. They also have a pretty ambitious menu with several dishes that will remind you that you are in-fact at an Irish pub- like potato cakes and corned beef hash- and most of the menu is damn good. If you aren't a beer drinker, try the Framboise Lambic or Cider for a sweeter drink, and I'm pretty sure they serve wine as well. You won't find any liquor here, but that's what gives it such a laid-back vibe. They have great daily food and beer specials, and be sure to stop by on Friday between 5-7 pm for some free munchies. If the weather is nice, you can hang out on the street side patio and still get good service. Sonka's is one thing I actually miss about Terre Haute. read more

The best bar in Terre Haute, no contest. The beer selection is excellent. The food is fantastic - I recommend the Irish stew, and if you ask you might be able to get a beer pitcher filled with french fries. It's a very casual atmosphere - you can throw your peanut shells on the floor, and move the tables and chairs around to suit your party. The patio is perfect for drinking on a nice Terre Haute night (it does happen occasionally), and the staff is always very friendly. read more

A cute little Irish Pub located in Terre Haute with many tables for outdoor seating. They had a ton of beer on tap, including one of my favorites - Gumball Head. My guest and I both tried the breaded tenderloin, which was good. It was big and we probably could have split it but instead took home leftovers. The french fries were standard but the real potato chips were awesome. Will likely be back for casual dining next time we're in the area. All the food I've tried here has been good (even the salad, who orders salad at a bar? It was good). The potato cakes and the onion rings...mmm delicious. The place draws a good crowd in the evenings, but there are almost always available seats. No better draught Craft Beer selection anywhere in Terre Haute (and probably for 50 miles in any direction, I'd reckon). The food here is decent, but I go for the beer-- the selection & quality alone is worth 5 stars. Much of it is Indiana craft, but they have plenty of regional greats from Michigan & Wisconsin as well, (along with the required 2-3 'crap taps', it IS a college town). There are 2 halves to Sonka's to choose from when sitting (but if there's room at the bar, it's the place to be)-- both areas are charming in their own way. In an old-school bar that is frequented by both locals & college students, somehow the atmosphere is always low-key & just right. read more

But I have some friends who love this place, and I've started meeting them there for dinner: you cannot go wrong! I LOVE their Leprechaun wings. The sauce has a lot of kick but is so good! The price for their wings is excellent, too. The service is good, but be prepared to show two IDs (a gov. ID and a credit card with your name will work). I could become a fan. I'm a lager guy and when I was there the plethora, and I mean PLETHORA of taps was filled with IPAs. I know it's the summer, but a lager or two on tap would've been great. I love the Irish chips and the food was pretty good. The ambience, fantastic, if you're with friends looking for a good time. The overall selection of beer on tap is pretty good for a small town. The knock I have is that the bartenders and waitresses aren't that knowledgeable on what's the selection. They should take time and learn each beer that is available. read more
