I could become a fan. I'm a lager guy and when I was there the plethora, and I mean PLETHORA of taps was filled with IPAs. I know it's the summer, but a lager or two on tap would've been great. I love the Irish chips and the food was pretty good. The ambience, fantastic, if you're with friends looking for a good time. The overall selection of beer on tap is pretty good for a small town. The knock I have is that the bartenders and waitresses aren't that knowledgeable on what's the selection. They should take time and learn each beer that is available. read more

They have an outstanding beer selection that leans very heavily towards local, craft beer and an extensive menu that will have you scratching your head for a while, trying to decide what to have. This place is great! The staff was fast, friendly, and attentive. The food was amazing! The cod sandwich is the absolute best fish sandwich that I have EVER had. Plus, they are pet friendly. We stopped in because we were traveling through the area with our two dogs. It is very hard to find a place to sit down and eat at when traveling with our dogs. We found reviews that Sonka allowed dogs inside and we called to confirm. It was no lie. Our dogs loved the experience as well. As soon as we walked in the door the owner gave both of the dogs a treat. Then, they brought a bowl of water to the table for them as well. We don't live around the area, but anytime we are traveling through we will always stop! read more

This is probably my favorite bar in TH. I know some people are put off by the lack of liquor, but if you can get past that hang up, then I think Sonka is the place to be. Even if you don't think you like beer, I feel like you can probably find at least one beer or cider in Sonka's large selection to tickle your fancy. Love this place! It is a great place to eat and hand out with friends. I don't drink beer, but they do have wine. It would be great to see more local wines on the wine list. One of the best places in town. The staff was very friendly, as were the other customers. It's a relaxed atmosphere. It's not a huge place and I am not sure I'd recommend sitting outside on a windy day (right next to Wabash with cars passing by and sometimes unpleasant smells waft up), but it was a nice place to chill and enjoy a beer and some good food. We tried the meat and cheese plate, the fish and chips, and one of the sandwiches on special (rye bread, ham, swiss). Because I don't like spicy food I got my fish and chips dry, so it wasn't great. But I imagine with their sauce it is better. Good food overall and great service. I'd definitely recommend this place. read more

I have been here a half dozen times since moving to the Haute in August of '12. The beer selection is prolific and ever-changing. The food is pretty above average and is exceptional for the Haute. If you're in town and can only eat out at one place try Sonka! You won't be sorry. read more

Fun lil spot. Nice selection of exclusive craft beer. Chips and sauces are good. Leprechaun wings are decent. Burgers? Laughable. Frozen, and seemingly microwaved garbage. Why would a pub, with otherwise decent food, serve a food service, frozen patty? I would be embarrassed, as an owner, to serve a burger that is inferior to a little league baseball concession stand. This speaks volumes as to what might go into other items on the menu. This would be a reason I would avoid going to this establishment. Go for beer, and chill vibe. Maybe some trivial pursuit. The 4 stars are for the beer selection, and the chill vibe. If it were for the food, I would give 1 star. read more

Best bar in town. If you're wanting a 'grown-up' bar, this is the place to go. Bar staff knows their beer and a wide variety of craft beers are always on tap. Food is 'pub-like', but they're always experimenting and offering entrees that you wouldn't normally find in a place like this. read more

My wife and I stopped here for a quick burger on a Thursday evening. Servers were friendly, prices were fair (most dinners were around $8.00), burgers and sides were good, beer selection was large: what more can you ask? Traditional Irish pub atmosphere is nice, too. They also have outdoor seating, if you're into that. (I might take points off for their Cole slaw being weird, but I'm pretty picky about my slaw: I like large chunks of veggies in slaw and theirs is almost puréed. Fair warning.) read more

I hadn't been here in about 10 years and decided to venture back today. So much has changed, but it's still the same small town pub I used to love too. They finally have a 3 way liquor license (though it's still pretty new and they are figuring out what exactly they'll serve), the food was freshly made and delicious (I had the Cod with house made chips and onion dip), and the server was awesome! This is definitely a step up from your standard pub fare but don't go expecting gourmet cuisine. As always an outstanding selection of beer- please don't lose that with the addition of hard liquor! Great bar. It's a beer-only bar, which can keep some girls and girly types away, but I love the atmosphere. Very casual, with free peanuts and a fun clientele. I have been here a couple times, and would definitely recommend it. I have found it difficult to find many good non-chain restaurants in Terre Haute to eat, so was happy to find this place. Both times I ate here, the food came out very hot and fresh. The only negative I woud say that my stomach was not entirely happy with me after eating burger and onion rings, but I blame the grease and not the restaurant itself. The bread for the sub I ate the next time was so soft and delicious, that all was forgiven. read more

Sonka's is stuck somewhere between a decent Irish Pub and a dive bar. Best thing is the draft beer selection. The food is good but not outstanding in any way. It is not really expensive as bar/pub food goes, but a bit expensive for the type and quality of the food itself. Beer only, no liquor. A little too dark inside even during the day. Parking is not great. Slow bar service when they are busy. I have been 3-4 times and the food quality has always been consistent - just nothing to rave about. Nice place to stop for a beer if you are enjoying that entertainment district in TH, but not a destination for sure. Thumbs up to the build your own bloody Mary bar. Will go back if the occasion warrants, would not go out of my way to get there. read more

I went there on Saturday, April 28 to pick up some of their Straussenfest German sausage and sides to take home. I ordered two brats, two sides of German potato salad, and a pretzel with beer cheese. I paid immediately. I sat waiting for about 20 minutes (!) and when the gentleman brought me the food he asked me to pay again. When I explained that I already paid a different lady, he looked at me in disbelief and said "uh, ok I guess" which I felt was rude. The bags were tied up completely and he assured me all was there. Drove 20 minutes home and I did not get the $8 pretzel I paid for. The sausage was dull and the German potato salad was inedible. Very poor experience from a place that I have always felt was well regarded. read more

I've been a fan of Sonka's since I've been old enough to drink. It is very much a Terre Haute staple. It is a great place to grab a beer, play some pool and darts and sit out on their porch. As a beer drinker, the biggest highlight is the amazing beer selection. The last I was there, they were above 40 taps. Far greater than any other place in Terre Haute. They always keep a wide variety of constantly moving beers around and the prices per pint are unbeatable. As for food, I recommend the swiss burger. It's second to none. Sonka's is going to serve you a great burger, hand made chips, and a great side at a great price. I also recommend going on Wednesdays for their half priced appetizers. read more

My experience with this place was average. The food was really good. They have a big selection of condiments for the fries, which you can purchase in a pitcher and eat as an appetizer. We sat outside on the patio which ended up being a bad idea. It was really nice to sit outside however, our wait service was horrible! It was like pulling teeth to get anyone to pay attention to us when we were first seated. Several waiters came out and were waiting on other tables, took a look at us, and walked inside to pretend he didn't see us. Altogether, it took us 2.5 hours from start to finish because we waited 30 mins just to get someone to bring us a check! I would recommmend this place based on the food. Make sure you have plenty of time on your hands. You will be there a while. read more
