This place is so worth the hype! Everything we had was absolutely delicious and left us wanting more. The portion sizes of the shareable plates is good to share with ~2 people, if you have a larger group I recommend ordering multiple of some of the smaller dishes and getting some handrolls as well. My favorites were the chirashi bowl, the miso clam chowder, and the banh mi handroll! I ordered 3 of the handrolls - Sonmari has some very imaginative and unique flavors for these so don't be afraid to try some of their special rolls! Servers were very attentive and helpful when asking about the menu and portion sizes. I will definitely be coming back to try some more of the dishes and recommending this place to others too!

Where do I even begin.. sonmari is one of the best restaurants I've eaten at in a while. The fish was so fresh and good quality and everything we ordered was delicious. I ordered the spicy tuna crispy rice which came with 4 good sized pieces. I also got the uni toast which I think it only a limited time menu item but I wish it was permanent. I haven't stopped thinking about the uni toast all week- it was so smooth and a generous serving of uni. Also got the hikari-don which was pretty good size I feel like u could split with 2 people. It has tuna, ikura , uni and sweet shrimp So so good. I can't wait to come back

What we got: 1. Hikaridon: 10/10 so worth it. The bowl was so large and FULL of fresh fish, amaebi and different types of uni. If you could only order one thing I would recommend this. 2. Miso clam soup: 9/10 Another hit. They perfectly combined the taste of miso soup and clam chowder together. This was a great palate cleanser too. 3. Yellowtail hand roll: 7/10 This was a very sizeable handroll but honestly didn't compare to the hikaridon with the seaweed wrap on the side 4. Oysters: fresh !! Servers were great and the vibes were also very nice. I made a reservation so didn't have to wait and the space is small so I would recommend doing so if you can.

Ok my friends told me about Sonmari and I'm happy I tried it this past Sunday!! The food was very good and my glass of wine. I had the soar salmon rolls and blue tuna without rice. (Kito friendly) I also adore the patron gets to put the roll into seaweed wraps, which is unique!! It was very good and 5/5 for me. Their sushi is very fresh and tasty! The ambiance is cute but it's not too big inside . Very modern and nice decor inside. Also, they have a good menu with food and drinks. This place is quite expensive in my mind!! Our bill was pretty pricy once the tab came. I will come back here to try ! 5/5 for md and great customer service! Someone checked on us the entire time! Love that! ~Marshay D.

I would give this place way more than just 5 stars because this was easily one of the most unique and interactive hand roll experiences we've ever been to in LA! This place is pure wow factor from start to finish and we genuinely can't get over how good every single dish was!! The open faced hand roll concept is genius because the stick that holds the sushi keeps the nori crispy. We tried a wide variety of their handrolls from salmon, blue crab, yellowtail, okonomiyaki, banh mi, sae woo jang, and scallop. Not only do they have such a wide variety, but each were all uniquely and beautifully presented. Everything tasted so fresh and the flavors in each were perfectly balanced! Although all the handrolls were amazing, the hikari don is definitely a must order on your visit here! It was so addicting and even though we were already full we still couldn't stop going back for more. It's one of those dishes you keep thinking about even after you leave and easily worth every single penny. We also tried a variety of appetizers, which was a nice change in texture. The uni toast had a generous amount of uni that was so buttery! The bibim soba noodles were light and refreshing and such a good contrast to the richness of everything else. It's so so rare nowadays to come across a restaurant thats unique and hits every mark of being perfect! Every single dish was handcrafted intentionally and the service was amazing! The ambiance and interior is clean and modern and tastefully designed making it perfect for both special occasions and casual nights out.

NOTE: Dined in on 4/9/26. Can be tough to find parking around this area, but we got lucky with a spot nearby. When I heard that the team behind Temaki Society was opening up a dedicated non-shared space restaurant, I was ecstatic. They make some of the best handrolls you can find ANYWHERE (especially the seared salmon) and this expanded space allows them to also flex an expanded menu! They took over the former Omakase by Osen space and it is largely unchanged. While it's a busy stretch of Sunset, it's actually reasonably quiet inside and if you sit in the patio area, they can choose to either open it up for some semi-al fresco dining or keep in closed depending on the weather. Going to apologize that I didn't take photos of the seared salmon handroll nor did I take photos of the spicy tuna crispy rice, but I'll touch upon them briefly in the written review: Seared salmon handroll - Unfortunately, not as good as the version at Temaki Society. I feel like the chili crunch flavor is muted and the sear on our handroll was insufficient (maybe just a little off this time). Ideally, you want to be able to taste the slight garlicky spice from the chili crunch and enjoy the difference in texture. And you want the salmon to melt in your mouth by being seared just enough, but it was still almost completely raw. Would definitely help if I had taken a photo to showcase what I mean. Spicy tuna crispy rice - A fairly standard interpretation of this dish, but prepared super well. Checks all the boxes with spicy tuna, avocado, a slice of jalapeno, a little bit of sauce underneath, with rice cooked perfectly, and it was still hot. It's rather large and the price reflects that for the two big pieces you get. They're pretty much the same size as a handroll each. Really appreciate how good the rice was and how it didn't gum up in my teeth. Okonomiyaki shrimp - panko fried shrimp, okonomi sauce, and bonito flakes. This tastes exactly like you would expect! I don't think there's too much to say about it. It's crunchy, the sauce + mayo mixture complements the batter + plump shrimp well. Hambagu - While this was good, I think it's a little much to be charging more for this than the seared salmon handroll, for 3 bites of hamburger, caramelized onions, cucumber, and thousand island on top of rice and nori. I probably wouldn't order it again. Hikari-don - while expensive, this has tuna (seemed like chutoro aka medium fatty bluefin tuna), takuan, ikura, sweet shrimp, and uni and comes with nori on the side for you to make your own little handrolls. You can even ask for more nori if you run out (we did). The rice is perfect, just like the rice from the handrolls, and all the ingredients work well together. Really rich and decadent if you throw in bits of the tuna and uni together. Easily the best item here, but you're paying a premium for it! Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Sonmari and I'd come back to try other items, but I can't say I was pleased with everything I tried... mostly due to the value proposition. Some of the items are quite expensive for what they are. Still highly recommend giving it a shot, but maybe stick to going to Temaki Society if you're looking for the best version of the seared salmon handroll.

There's a pretty good reason why this place is rated so highly. Came here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch with no wait and then also Sunday evening with reservations. Everything was tasting so fresh and of high quality. As a first timer, I would recommend going for the Lunch special (sonmari set) as it provides all the basics that you would want to try at a good price point. Then once you come for lunch, go for dinner as the menu expands and there even more offerings. Highly recommend the hikari-don as there is a decent amount of good quality fish in it plus the carbs which provides a balance to the fatty fish and a satisfying bite. After trying all the sonmaris, all are great though if I had to choose my least favorite, it would be the Bahn-mi. The pairing wasn't as much too my liking especially when compared to the other offerings. Overall, the head chef has trained at Michelin starred restaurants along with a great team. They provide an excellent dining experience and an outstanding take on handrolls ensuring thst each piece of seaweed is crisp and that the fish is tasty. For a small menu and quick to go experience, Temaki Society in DTLA is a great option but for the full on experience, I would recommend Sonmari. Definitely would recommend this place.

5 stars for our first visit which was lunch, 4 stars for our second visit which was dinner. The service upon our first visit was excellent, second visit was a bit amateur. No knowledge of the sakes they served, and overall a bit sloppy and inattentive. We also preferred the food items that we tried during lunch. Hand rolls are all solid. Favorites were the seared salmon and the hambagu, both 5 stars. The crispy rice spice tuna was also solid and tasty. Miso clam chowder was really good, 4 stars. The GAMJA-JEON (which is like a little potato pancake) was beautifully presented but lacked a bit of flavor, 3 stars. Ambiance is beautiful, I definitely prefer eating inside at a table or by the sushi bar. I feel like since this spot is new the service will be more consistent but you just can't beat these fun hand rolls here and I'll definitely be back.

Let me start off by saying that I fell in love with the handrolls from Temaki Society, so when I found out they opened a legit restaurant.. I was floored to say that least! Only bummer is that it is in Echo Park which means parking is not the easiest (and honestly the only reason why it took me so long to finally dine here). There is a valet lot ($15-20) across the street so that helped with our lunch dining experience. We were seated at the bar and it was awesome to watch all the action unfold. We started with the Yuzu sake (AMAZING) and a glass of the German Sparkling wine (Hild) both of which were super refreshing! Highly recommend. We ordered: Uni Toast - Super yummy and what you would expect, though the cream sauce was to die for. Red Snapper Sashimi - Super fresh and delish Temaki Mori (Lunch Combo) - Relived my yummy Temaki Society days Sonmari Set (Lunch Combo) - So tasty The service was wonderful and the staff was so accommodating when we accidentally spilled our complimentary miso soup. Special shout out to the Chef/Owner who was so kind and hospitable. He gave us complimentary Banh Mi hand rolls (his favorite) and Yuzu sorbet. While this roll didn't taste like a Banh Mi to me, it was super delish and fresh. I will definitely order it the next time I visit! Lastly, the yuzu sorbet was so refreshing and the perfect ending to the meal. So grateful I finally got to visit and happy they have an expanded the menu with a beautiful restaurant.

Known for their SONMARI, DIY way, which I find is preferred over the original way of serving already wrapped and brought out to the table. Each hand roll is served on a thin wooden spatula and side of crisp seaweed sheet to wrap it yourself at the table. Very easy to do-place the seaweed in your left hand. Then place the spatula on the seaweed. Gently roll the sides of the seaweed around the spatula creating a boat. Then pinch the sides (the sushi rice body) as you pull the spatula out leaving the rice and sushi on the seaweed. This keeps the seaweed crisp and crunchy until ready to eat. I absolutely love this ! Tried five different rolls, and the Banh-Mi, chili yellowtail and CUT were my favorites -Banh-Mi: albacore with Serrano, cilantro, garlic and ponzu - Chili Yellowtail: yellowtail with Serrano, cilantro, and ponzu - CUT: tuna, uni, and cavier. The Italian sub of the sushi world - Seared salmon: simple seared salmon with light smoky flavor - Bluefin tuna: tasted like a tuna salad with avocado. My least favorite. Would skip this one next time. Also ordered the limited Uni toast which is served on a light toast and poached egg yolk with four generous servings of Uni and chive. Good m, but honestly would probably order another CUT SONMARI instead next time. Great place for lunch and light dinner. Coming back again for sure.

I came here with my husband to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We walked in on a Saturday night and only waiting 20ish minutes for a table. They do take reservations and would recommend if you have a larger party. We ordered the miso clam chowder, crispy rice and sonmari hand rolls. The waitress was very nice and explained the menu to us. The chef is French trained which is why some of appetizers are have a fusion of French inspiration. The miso clam chowder (9/10) was yummy and had lots of clams in it! The crispy rice (9/10) had a lot of spicy tuna on it! It was flavorful and l liked the crispy rice. Our favorite was the sonmari interactive hand rolls. I got the bahn mi, seared salmon, unagi gochujang, and blue crab with avocado. I liked the concept of making your hand rolls when you're ready so the seaweed doesn't get soggy. My favorites in order: 1. Seared salmon (100/10) - flavorful and caught us by surprise how good it was. There was a creamy, umami sauce on top 2. Bahn mi (9.5/10) - I believe it it was yellow tail with sauce 3. Unagi Gochujang (9.5/10) - the eel was very soft and tender and had a nice sweetness with the gochujang 4. Salmon (9/10) - very fresh and had a nice creamy sauce 5. Spicy tuna (8/10) - nice spicy kick 6. Blue crab (5/10)- it was a bit fishy, would skip next time Overall the food and service was amazing! Our waitress gave us a yuzu sorbet to celebrate our anniversary. The sorbet is made in house by true chefs. It was very refreshing and had a nice yuzu flavor that was not tart. It was the perfect finisher for our dinner. Would definitely come back again! Great date night spot.

Everything was amazinggggggg! Best hand rolls of my life. They really perfected the spicy tuna. Fish to rice ratio was perfect. The seating was nice and romantic. If you're reading this, you're clearly in for some sushi. This place is an absolute must-visit. Everything we ordered was top tier, but the lunch sushi combo and the Sonmari set are 100% the way to go. The uni was incredibly fresh and rich, and the saewoo-jang was perfectly marinated. For real some of the best bites I've had in a long time. The Sonmari (hand rolls) were hands down the best I've had to date. They're packed with flavor and super generous with the toppings, which makes every bite worth it. Plus, they're fun to eat. You can tell the chef puts a lot of care into every piece because everything is prepared thoughtfully right in front of you (if you sit at the bar). Service was just as impressive. Kevin took great care of us. We sat inside in the AC and it felt very nice. Definitely coming back. Highly recommend!

The food is solid but they don't have a set menu like other places so you're paying $30 min for 3 pieces. Salmon doesn't taste fresh and blue crab is solid. Seared salmon was prob best one but only bc the sauce hides the fact that the salmon isn't fresh. You can get more rolls for a cheaper price at kazunori, go there instead. read more

Tried the Hambagu hand roll and the Nori bibim soba, and both were really good. The hambagu hand roll was juicy and flavorful, with warm rice and crisp nori that held everything together nicely. Simple, comforting, and well made. The nori bibim soba was light and refreshing, with lots of seaweed flavor and a nice balance overall. The chef has a Michelin level background, and it really shows in the thoughtfulJapanese-Korean fusion menu.The uni toast is a must order，crispy outside, soft inside, topped with generous, sweet uni and a rich slow cooked egg yolk. The maguro monaka is beautiful and delicious, with great texture and layers of flavor. Lovely new hand roll spot in Silverlake! It's a thoughtful blend of Korean and Japanese flavors, with an emphasis on quality and generous portions. I feel a bit basic saying this, but the smoked salmon hand roll was my favorite, closely followed by the naengmyeon-inspired sashimi. The flavors are clean, bright, and well balanced! 10/10. Addicted. Never liked handrolls... now I love them. Sonmari's handrolls deliver perfectly harmonized flavors and textures--and you get to roll your own. Easy, fun, and so satisfying. Sonmari specializes in handrolls but they also have signature dishes that are a MUST HAVE!! Limited edition!! My fave of favorites were Banh Mi handroll- Albacore garnished with brunoise cut of carrots, serrano, chili oil, cilantro, that's Infused with Vietnamese seasoning, bring that classic Banh mi flavor to life in a handroll. Amazing! Smoked Salmon handroll- U M A M I Perfectly seared that draws out the natural oils of the salmon which blends so well with the mustards dressing. It's so fire. Uni Toast- I could go 10 of these. Perfectly toasted bread, crisp outside and chewy inside, layered with a special egg yolk spread topped with uni and chive cream.. so rich and buttery. I love it. Maguro Monaka- A beauty inside n out. Pretty to your eyes and exquisite on the palate. Delicate from the Monaka, a crisp rice wafer shell, filled with tuna jeweled with takuan crowned with uni and caviar. An elegant and graceful presentation, delightful to the palate. Incredible experience at the grand opening! The Japanese hand rolls are top-tier (hardly a surprise given the chef's 3-star Michelin history). The food is outstanding and the vibe is spot on. Just be prepared for a bit of a struggle with street parking--it's pretty tough in this area. Usually find some spots on Golden Gate Ave. Still, a 5-star experience all around. Highly recommend checking this spot out befor it becomes impossible to get a seat! read more

I visited a newly opened restaurant in Silver Lake with a friend two days ago. I'm someone who really loves seafood, so I came in with high expectations. The photos on Yelp and Google looked beautiful, and in person the atmosphere was just as great. The food was delicious as well. The toro sushi, bibim noodles, and clam chowder were all excellent, but the fish and hand rolls were truly outstanding. We were also recommended a sake called Abe, which was very enjoyable. A great new Japanese spot just opened in Silver Lake, so my friend and I went for lunch. We ordered the **Temaki Mori**, **Uni Toast**, and **Crispy Rice**, and everything was delicious. The uni toast was especially impressive - the plating was beautiful and the flavor was amazing. The chef kindly treated us to **soba** and a savory **pancake (jeon)**, and they were so good that I definitely want to order them again next time. Went to the soft opening last night and had an amazing experience from start to finish. The food was incredibly fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and beautifully presented. Every roll we tried was flavorful and well balanced, and nothing felt rushed or overdone. You can really tell the chef takes pride in the details. The variety was a standout. I visited Sonmari today with friends, and it completely exceeded my expectations for a hand roll bar. If we had only eaten the hand rolls and left, I don't think we could truly say we experienced this place. Every dish went far beyond what you'd expect -- the Miso Clam Chowder, Gamja-Jeon, Nori Bibim Soba, Mul-Hwe, Duck Gui, and the Uni Toast with freshly shaved truffle were all incredibly memorable. Each plate felt thoughtful and unique, and we kept talking about how impressive everything was throughout the meal. Parking was also surprisingly easy -- after 5 PM there were plenty of free street parking spots along the nearby streets, which made the visit even more stress-free. I also loved the small details: plates designed specifically for hand rolls and the adorable lucky-pouch style bill holder added a playful, charming touch that made the whole dining experience more enjoyable. It's a perfect spot for a date night, but also great for dinners with friends or family. I'm really happy a restaurant like this opened in Silver Lake -- definitely a place I'll be coming back to. We drove 1 hr to here. Very disappointing experience today. Google clearly states that this restaurant closes at 3:00 PM. I arrived at 2:28 PM, and there were still staff members inside. Instead of acknowledging me, the server initially avoided eye contact and acted as if I wasn't there. A few minutes later (around 2:32 PM), I was told they were already closed because "last call is 2:30." If last call is 2:30 PM, that should be clearly stated online and at the entrance -- not simply "closing at 3:00 PM." Customers plan their visits based on the posted business hours. I arrived before 2:30, so being turned away felt unreasonable. What made it worse was the lack of basic courtesy. A simple explanation upfront would have been appreciated instead of being ignored. Please update your business hours to reflect your actual last call time and train staff to communicate more professionally. Respecting customers' time should be standard. read more

The bratwurst was fine, but tasted frozen and reheated rather than fresh. The sauerkraut, according to him, "tasted like dirty socks." In addition to that, a cucumber burrata salad was ordered, and that was made well too. When my venison burger arrived, I took a few bites and it had the exact flavor I was hoping for and I thought the burger was done extremely well. My friend also ordered a pork chop, and it was an amazing cut, cooked perfectly, tender, juicy and everything you could ever want in a bone in pork chop. They also cut the entire piece for you and scraped every last bit off of the bone too. The service is really attentive. They come by your table a lot to ensure you have everything you need. The ambiance is a bit dim in lighting which sets a nice mood. And the place just happens to be dog friendly too. Sorry for the lack of photos, but I didn't wanna intrude on everyone else's meals. I went there with my wife and 2 teenage daughters. We started with the cornbread. I thought it was good (4/5) but with the amount of butter and honey anything would have been good. Wife didn't care for it, thought the buttermilk made it too sour. Just know that it's tiny. For the four of us, each had one bite. The menu for mains is pretty limited. Steak, swordfish, or porkchop. We ended up going with the steak, 2 swordfish, and then added the brown eyed peas, mashed potatoes, and then wanted to start off with the pork chile (which is really chile verde). The chile verde was the star of the night. If I ever went back, this is what I would order. Maybe it's because all the chef's are hispanic, but it was really good. Don't think of chocolate cake, think of it rather as a small piece of chocolate flavored loaf with no frosting or chocolate pieces. I liked it because I like things that are not very sweet but I was the only one that cared for it. Overall portions are fairly small. Between me, my wife, and two teenagers we ate everything. Total bill with tip was about $510. Pretty crazy when you think about it. Would I go back? Probably not but the ambiance was nice with the grill and real candles.

I randomly found this newly opened fusion Japanese spot near Silver Lake Park on Google Maps (4.9 already!) and it seriously exceeded expectations. Most hand rolls are around $9, and the uni dishes are a bit higher -- but the quality is honestly amazing for the price. Uni Toast Absolute heaven. The uni was incredibly fresh and sweet, and the half-set egg yolk in the middle made everything rich and silky. One of the best bites of the night. Maguro Monaka I originally ordered this because it looked pretty in photos... but it actually delivered. Uni + caviar topping, tuna poke filling, and a kimchi base -- such a fun Korean-Japanese fusion combo that really worked. Sweet Shrimp Hand Roll The seafood quality here is legit. The shrimp was big, sweet, and super fresh. Wrapped in crispy seaweed = simple and perfect. Miso Clam Chowder This was recommended by the staff and WOW -- don't skip it if you like clams. Big portions of clams, creamy broth, and soft potatoes. Two of us shared and it was plenty. Seared Salmon Lightly torched and buttery. Surprisingly filling and very satisfying. Mulhwe (fusion sashimi soup) Not my usual go-to since I'm not big on raw fish, but my friend loved it. Definitely depends on your taste. We finished with a sweet drink and yuzu green tea ice cream -- super refreshing and a perfect ending. For the love of delicious food, this is the one that you should go I went there for dinner during a soft opening. And it was amazing. Atmosphere was cozy and warm. All staff was nice and friendly. And of course, food was great, fresh and tasteful. Especailly their handroll(Sonmari) was very unique and flavorful. I tried almost all food there and everything was very good. Serrano Hamachi and chili yellowtail were my favorite though. If you like to go to sushi bar or like to try special handroll, this is the place you need go in LA. You will love this place. read more
