Another great joint in east LA! Rasarumah is a cute east Asian spot with great food and drinks. We enjoyed the samosas (which were more like spring rolls, but still great) and the beef rendang, which was super decadent. The gado gado and fried Hainan chicken and rice were tasty as well but I think the first two items stole the show. The pandan colada was great to wash it down!

Rasarumah, a Malaysian restaurant, was good but not great. Like any LA spot, street parking is found in the neighborhood. During night time, the neighborhood seems scary but generally safe. I came here on a weekday night because I was craving some Malaysian food. Initial thoughts. The dim lit atmosphere and hip decor makes this an excellent choice to bring a date. Light to moderate noise levels for clear conversations. Today, we ordered the Wagyu Beef Cheek Rendang and Char Koay Kak. When the food came out, we thought the portions were small, however, it was decently filling. Wagyu Beef Cheek Rendang: This meal comes with 2 pieces of Roti, which were fluffy and airy. The Rendang itself was good. Flavors were aromatic and deep, however, there were parts that were too salty. The wagyu cheek was cooked well, and was tender. Combining the herbs, dressing, and lime into one big bite with the Roti, elevates the dish to another level. Char Koay Kak: This dish was extremely refreshing and delicious. All the components together combined perfectly. The rice cakes were a perfect starch for this dish. The chili oil brings in the savory flavor, while the pickled vegetables brought in a sweet, acidic flavor to complement. Wish the portion size was bigger. The service here is friendly. They explained the menu and provided recommendations. There is a 4% restaurant fee that is not tip for the servers. But my issue is that the tipping percentage started at 20%. Understandable that this restaurant is located in LA and times are difficult, but at that percentage warrants excellent service throughout the duration of the dinner, which I felt was not delivered. And it did not help that the server was staring directly at me, when I was tipping. TLDR: Food is good. Service is good. Atmosphere is hip. Price is expensive. Portions are small. 4% restaurant fee. High expected tip percentage. Authentic Malaysian = not really.

Rasarumah is a modern Malaysian-inspired restaurant located in the Historic Filipinotown neighborhood. To get here, there is street parking all around the area. Wifey and I stopped by with a dinner reservation and were seated right away upon arrival. For their menu, they have a thoughtfully crafted menu with a nice selection to choose from. We ended up getting a spread consisting of the Pu Pu Platter, Char Kway Teow, and the Wagyu Beef Cheek Rendang. Everything that we had was delicious and portion sizes were generous. All of the staff here are very friendly and welcoming. Definitely book your next table here for a meal and you will not be disappointed!

Hainan chicken, good, very small portions.

Food was good but overpriced. Service was good. Ambiance was good. Neighborhood was not good, very limited parking. The curry salmon was excellent. Even though the food and service was good, I would not go back because the ambiance and parking did not justify the cost. I paid 5 star prices for a 3 star restaurant.

For my first time dining at the restaurant, I had wonderful experience. This place is a hidden gem in LA's filipino town. The ambiance was well put together. The food was wonderful each dish we ordered was exquisite, so much flavors coming from the appetizers to their main dishes. The staff were very nice and accommodating. We didn't have reservations and were able to walk in on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. The drinks were great. All in all I would say, I will definitely be back if I'm ever in the area again.

This is an excellent spot for Malaysian cuisine, a cuisine that isn't the easiest to find in LA. However, this spot doesn't provide the best value as dishes are pretty expensive. -Wagyu Beef Cheek Rendang: My favorite dish here. Sauce has excellent flavor and a pleasant sweetness, and paired well with the roti. Beef was very tender. This dish is expensive though. -Fried Hainan Chicken: Excellent. Chicken was very good and tender with perfect crispy exterior. Decent garlic scallion sauce. -Char Kway Teow: There's a slight spicy kick to the noodles otherwise the flavor of this was okay. Portions are small and can honestly be finished in a few bites. -Pork Jowl Skewer: Decent smoky flavor. -Chicken Meatball Skewer: I liked the pineapple peanut sauce that came with it.

Rasarumah is one of my most frequented restaurants in LA even though that means driving 40 min one way, because it's 100% worth it. Wagyu beef curry is a must-order. It's slow cooked for hours in sweet creamy coconut yellow curry. The soft, succulent Wagyu meets the sweet, aromatic curry in a beautifully balanced harmony. Roti bread takes things to the next level. Wrap the curry wagyu in the roti, and add in the herbs and pickles, and then the food bites became increasingly sophisticated. The rich curry is balanced by fresh herbs, while the creamy coconut base is perfectly offset by the sharp, tangy pickles. Pork jowl skewer is my second favorite. Intensely rich and satisfying. The chewy texture makes me feel like I'm eating a savory jello. Try to come during their happy hours, so you get the Wagyu beef roll which is just the Wagyu beef curry but the kitchen wrap everything up for you. The portion is smaller but this allows for more variety. Also when the afternoon light softly lights up the interior, the plants really start to come to life, making the life full of tropical exotica but still homey and inviting.

I went for a birthday meal and from the moment we walked in ( we were the very first people there at 5pm lol) we felt like family. Kind, welcoming, knowledgeable, and full of personality. Absolutely every single person here made my night so so special. Each bite of every dish felt like I was being transported outside of this tiny Westlake restaurant and into someplace exciting. The skewers were my favorite (not pictured) and I can see myself going back for a skewer and pie- a girl dinner :)

Overall: 4 stars Authentic Southeast Asian restaurant with unapologetic flavors and traditional ingredients. I appreciated the proactive service and how the birthday celebration was on a grand billboard for an exciting night. I thought the pricing was similar to tapas style, so I think the presentation could be improved to match that standard as well. (Sambal Trio: C) - The featured three include a shrimp paste, bell pepper tamarind, and jalapeno-forward. I like the authenticity of the flavors, particular since the umami shrimp paste is such an acquired taste. I think it would be preferable if one of the sambal was sugar-forward since all of them have unapologetic spice. (Chicken Satay: A) - The meatball is tender and well binded, pairing well with the fruity pineapple salsa, as well as the nutty peanut sauce. (Pork Jowl: A+) - The pork is tender and the richness is well contrasted by the sharp dijon. (Mushroom Skewer: C) - King oysters are cleanly trimmed and nicely roasted. However, the price is premium compared to the protein options. (Rojak Salad: B) - Herbaceous and fruity salad that provides a refreshing palette to contrast the authenticity of the reset of the comfort menu. (Char Kway Teow: B) - Comforting and tasteful noodles powered by that wok hay. Both the fish cake and chinese sausage add heartiness while the cilantro adds a mild balance. (Pandan Sundae: A) - Eventful sundae with lots going on from the red bean to the pandan jelly to the vegan coconut ice cream that is impressively creamy. The puffed rice and caramel add even more textural and flavoral variety. Food: +1 Presentation: E Price: E Atmosphere: E Service: +1 Menu: +1 Insta/Yelp/Beli/TikTok: @amei_eats

Every dish we ordered was delicious. The food we ordered were the Pupu Platter, Crab Rangoon, Fried Hainan Chicken, Char Kway Teow, Wagyu Beef Rendang, and the Mushroom Clay Pot Rice each dish was flavorful and satisfying. The restaurant has a warm and cozy atmosphere, and I loved the thoughtful touch of putting birthday guests' names on the board to celebrate them. The staff were friendly, attentive, and professional throughout the meal. Every dish exceeded my expectations and left me very satisfied. The restaurant itself isn't very big, but it's clearly popular and busy. Parking can be a bit challenging, so you may need to look for street parking. Overall, a lovely dining experience definitely recommend.

Really yummy! Inside is very cute, would be a nice date night spot. We had the: - Pu Pu Platter - Gado Gado - Pork Jowl Skewer - Char Koay Kak - Passionfruit Cream Pie This was a nice assortment to share with 3 people. My favorite bites were the Pork Jowl Skewer, Gado Gado, the mushroom skewer from the Pu Pu Platter, and the Passionfruit Cream Pie. Love whenever I got a bite of Shrimp Chips. I want to try the Cendol Sundae next time!

Surprised that this Rojak salad had so much flavor profile. Must order

5th stop of the day and our 3rd food option on our double date extravaganza was another Michelin star restaurant. The area we were in did not feel like a cozy little spot dishing out award winning food would be here, but this hidden gem was outstanding. Service from Sam was great because he ensured we got a variety of the whole menu to ensure we all enjoyed ourselves. From drinks to food, everything was amazing. My only complaint was I wish the portions were a little bigger. The samosas, the quality of the ceviche, the tenderness of the pork belly, the very well balanced flavors of the fruit & veggie salad, and the stir fry noodles which were cooked to perfection all blended well together. Not to mention they paired well with the cocktails we ordered. Another must visit place if you want to try some Malaysian food.

Came here to celebrate my birthday and I loved every minute here! Staff was attentive and so friendly. Loved their little ".. and happy birthday! :)" they'd sneak in while talking to me. We ate family style and ordered sambal trio, pupu platter, gado gado salad, char kway teo, and the cendol sundae. Honestly, everything slapped but if I had to choose my favorites and what I would easily reorder: pupu platter, char kway teo, and cendol sundae. The char kway teo was delicious, so flavorful and I was slurping this down! So good! The sundae was the perfect way to end the night. I love pandan and loved all the pieces of this. I was so close to ordering one to-go so I could enjoy it at home! Cocktails: Loved loved the pandan colada and the calamansi crusher. (as you may have guessed, big fan of pandan.) I will ABSOLUTELY be coming back. Reservations were so easy online and I found street parking in the neighborhood easily on a Friday night (might've been luck?). This is such a fun vibe and so lively. Whether it's one other person or a group, I think all would appreciate this fun restaurant! Loved the billboard too ;)

Thank you for your help on items that are safe for seafood allergies! Want to clarify that these are dishes that are free from anything from the sea, including seaweed?

We waited nearly 20 minutes to be seated and another 20-30 minutes before anyone took our order. I understand that restaurants get busy, and we were trying to be patient because we could see the staff was overwhelmed. When we finally got our beer, I told our server, Noah, that I could pour it myself if that would help. Instead of explaining the situation politely, he responded with attitude and said, "You know I can't serve you guys, right?" I apologized, but then he told us, "Nah, you guys have to leave." This was frustrating after waiting so long just to place an order. We were never rude or disrespectful to the staff, so the interaction felt unprofessional and unnecessary. I completely understand being busy, but customer service should still be respectful. Unfortunately, this experience left a negative impression despite the great welcome we received from Nate.

And the neighborhood behind the bar is filled with park cars. We were lucky and parked at a parking lot that was for the surrounding business (so sorry to the pizza/ weed shop!). We arrived at around 6:30 PM so it wasn't too busy. We were greeted by one of the servers and she gave us options to either sit at a lounge table area or hightop tables. We opted for the hightop tables because we knew we weren't staying there for long. The server was friendly and patient as we looked over the menu for drinks. I've been sober for about a year so I only had water, my boyfriend ordered a Naoshima Dream, his cousin ordered a Mango Cart, and his cousin's girlfriend ordered a Lemon Drop Martini. The bar was super cute and hipster! I honestly would have loved going to this bar back when I used to drink. It's dimly lit, had a vintage 20's speakeasy feel to it and the music was a vibe. I'd recommend coming here for a little date with your partner or even coming with a group of friends. My boyfriend had been here once before and he said the food was really good and affordable. He had a panini and said for bar food it was a 10/10. We waited maybe like 10 minutes for our drinks to come, we were having such a fun time chatting and enjoying the environment that it didn't feel long at all. My boyfriend, his cousin, and his cousin's girlfriend really enjoyed their drinks. They said the drinks tasted "light" insinuating that there was barely any alcohol in it. Don't let the taste fool you, after finishing half of their drink there were full of smiles, giggles, and had a great buzz going. The prices here were all pretty fair for the cost and quality of the drinks. Would defintely recommend coming here for drinks and dinner for a date night or a night out with friends!

We decided to get a drink to celebrate Father's Day, only to strike out at the first two bars we tried--I guess a lot of places are closed at 9:30 on a Sunday. This is how we ended up at Thunderbolt, a buzzy bar in Echo Park, just far enough away that we'd never made our way over. I loved it immediately. Thunderbolt has the friendly, comfortable atmosphere of a neighborhood bar and the hip aesthetic and high-level cocktails of a millennial boozer destination. (Not that young people can't or shouldn't hang out here, but it seems especially geared toward people like us, who drank at Walker Inn a decade ago.) We ended up sitting next to a guy who regularly drives up from Palos Verdes. I guess the place gets pretty busy, but it was ideal on a Sunday night. Happening but not crowded, with just enough space at the bar for us to grab two seats together. The bartender was great, super helpful and welcoming. He also made excellent drinks. (There was also further reading about the clarification process.) The Barcelonnette was a mezcal sour with Suze, passionfruit, and lime, the foam made without egg white through some geeky mixologist process.
