Came here with my mom for breakfast while in the area. This place is well Maintained while still Clearly being older which was a nice experience. Our waitress was attentive and kind and made sure we were taken care of. I got the sunny bot breakfast platter with over hard eggs, hash-browns, extra crispy bacon, and sausage gravy and biscuits. I also got a bowl of chili. The bacon was some of the best I've had at a restaurant and one of the only places to actually make it extra crispy. I also really enjoyed the chili. I was staying close by and always love to eat at local diners! I'm glad I stopped at Sonny Boy's restaurant. The parking is in the back of the building and entering your greeted by friendly wait staff who seated me immediately. My coffee arrived very quickly and she took my order. The booths were in good order and I enjoyed listening to the retired men eating out... always love hearing the local color! My food arrived hot and aromatic. The omelet was well stuffed, the potatoes nice and crispy, and biscuit was delicious. The coffee was really good -- very smooth and tasty. I recommend you stop in for a bite! read more

Was 6 and a baby in our party. I happened to see in the fine print that a 20% gratuity will be added to bill of 5 or more. That isn't a problem for a nice establishment which isn't what this place is. Like other reviews, dated with 70's vibe. My meal was breakfast with hash browns which were fried to a crisp. I told the server they weee nasty and asked for Home fries instead., which I finally got after my eggs were cold. Service wasn't that great, adequate I would say. When the bill came what a surprise, 121.00 which included the 20% gratuity with another 5% for use of a debit card. I mentioned it and they said those card companies want their money to which I said is usually 3%. This place is fantastic! You might feel like you stepped back in time when you walk through the door. There isn't to many places like this left. It has an old school diner vibe and the prices are incredible. We had a party of 4 and our bill was only $35. Our waitress was superb! She was an older lady and I was just amazed at how well she did her job. She was moving around that place and carrying out trays of food like it was nobody's business. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with hash browns. I'm pretty sure this was the best biscuits and gravy I've had, and trust me I've tried many. The hash browns were really good too. You can tell that they're freshly made. I don't have one complaint about this place and will definitely be back. I would love to give their lunch menu a try next! read more

First of all, if you've eaten at this diner two or more years ago, ignore all reviews posted before then. They were true -- bad service, dirty worn out dirty diner, and awful food. We last ate here in 2020 based on someone else's recommendation. Awful. Just awful. We had not planned on coming back, ever. Then we saw a new tv ad for Sonny Boy's with a new menu. Looked a LOT better than it had. Plus they offered 50% off for a $25 certificate. Why not? Things have changed, mostly. The diner still has that "the 70's called and they want their diner back" motif, but at least it's a lot cleaner than it was two years ago and doesn't stink of cigarette smoke. My wife had the stuffed chicken breast with corn and double-baked potato. The chicken was great but the corn was a little cold. I had the Reuben Melt (picture posted) and onion rings. Two years ago, the melt was cold, had tasteless corned beef, no swiss, wimpy sauerkraut, and no dressing. This time everything was perfect. Warm sandwich, great corned beef, plentiful sauerkraut and dressing. And the onion rings...fantastic. They weren't whole rings but minced onion but still, wonderfully done. The only negative was the service. It was slow. I think the waitress was trying her best, but some people can wait tables...some can't. If I were giving stars based on the local area (which is a foodie's worst nightmare), it would have been five. But most of these reviews are for folks out of town, visiting, or passing through. It's still a solid four. Had the restaurant had a complete remodel and the service been better, I'd feel more like a five. But it it what it is. I was told the guy who owns the used car lot next door bought it about 1-2 years ago. For someone who sells used cars, Sonny Boy's is a modern miracle. We have given Sonny Boy numerous chances since ownership changed hands. We know how tough it can be transitioning through management. Today was the last chance we are going to give. Ham was over cooked, eggs were undercooked, hashbrowns looked like they came out of a microwave and were served with raw onions, our tea tasted like mop water, and to top it off the cashier is the least personal individual they could possibly have running the station. I was really hoping this place would be a nice home cookin' oasis on our cross-country drive, but was so disappointed! The food deserves zero stars...it was really, really bad. I don't mind weird exotic foods, but my lunch was barely edible. I had a grilled cheese, thinking "how bad could a grilled cheese be?", and it was 2 squares of gluey orange Kraft (if you're lucky) between 2 chewy, greasy pieces of white toast. Please. In case you read that description thinking "doesn't sound *that* bad" - trust me, it was. My boyfriend tried to ask the waitress if the fish in the fish sandwich was local and if it was frozen - two questions she'd apparently never heard and had an awfully hard time comprehending. We laughed, and he ordered a B.L.T which might as well have been made by a blindfolded 4 year old. However, I'd still rather go to Sonny Boy's than McDonalds, any day. The prices are so cheap it's a wonder the servers make anything, and I'm happy to support a local business. I just hope they hire some decent kitchen staff. This was my first time here being it popping up as a breakfast spot while driving in town. It's one of them places where when driving past you think man the food must be good there. On walking in we where greeted by sonny boy him self we found out. He was so nice! The staff all wore scrubs like working in a doctors office so that was kinda strange but still everyone was so nice. Now the food here is pretty cheap and priced low so you can get a lot of food for not a lot of money. The food taste it's self was just kinda bland everything was pretty basic nothing crazy. The eggs where good nice, the French toast was soggy and eggy. The bacon had a good crisp. The sausage gravy was way to salty, the coffee tasted burnt. I mean there's definitely some complaints and some compliments. I don't think I would ever return here again because it's just not that great. I went back, on the chance that maybe I was wrong about this place. Well, I wasn't. Look, I get that it's cheap, I get that it's filling and greasy and a lot of people don't care about food in any sense beyond that. I love greasy spoons, but this is more like a greasy ladle. First, let me start off and say something positive, the staff was very nice and accomodating to us and the other tables, so service is fine. Food came up quick, no big deal. Problem is, the food is bad. It's either salty, or overcooked, or slaked in grease. The so-called "chicken and rice soup" looked like a bowl of watery oatmeal with flakes of chicken in it. How you can manage to disintegrate rice is a bit of a mystery, until you take a bite and realize the salt has obviously broken the rice down into a starchy soggy mess. Seriously, this is the SALTIEST thing I've ever tasted, and I'm very glad I'm not the one who ordered it. You shouldn't have to water your own soup down to make it bearable. Speaking of which, the water glasses are about the size of a thimble. Sonny Boy might be cheap, but you get what you pay for. Less offensive was the burger, but it was still offensive. Overcooked, dry, served on a cold bun with about 100 pickles, a piece of iceberg lettuce, and "Sonny Boy's special sauce", which is literally thousand island dressing. It doesn't take much to beat McDonald's, but this doesn't do it. Also, inexplicably served with a pat of butter in case you want more grease. Speaking of grease... Grilled cheese. I've coined a new term for the glistening fingertips you get from making the mistake of picking up a Sonny Boy grilled cheese: The Sonny Boy Shine. Keeps your fingers moisturized in the dry winter air, very helpful! I don't mean to be rude, but I just can't understand how this place is a local institution. It sits right next door to a Dairy Queen, and I'd rather go there any day, despite my proclivity to choose a local joint over a chain restaurant. Lastly, the letter keys on the personal jukeboxes are caked in filth so old that it could probably register as a historical landmark itself. Sorry Sonny, I won't be back. read more

I have a long past with this awful place. When I was younger, my grandparents forced me to eat here. Often, I would just wait in the car rather than suffer through the disgusting grease and grime of a meal at Sonny Boy. Everything here sucks. The service is miserable, the ambiance is nonexistent, and it honestly feels like something terrible is about to happen while you're here. I've never had a good meal here. I will never have a good meal here. The kitchen is incapable of delivering one. If the food isn't greasy, it's inescapably salty. But don't expect to quench your thirst with some water, the water glasses are the smallest I've ever seen. If you ask for a larger glass, I'm pretty sure the staff will call the police. The owner is rude and will argue with you about the quality of the food if you have any complaints. Despite the fact that everything here is cheap trash, he seems very offended if you notice that. In conclusion, if you hate yourself, I highly recommend that you eat here. However, if you have even the slightest of self respect, go literally anywhere else. read more

I doubt seriously that Sonny Boy gives 2 shits about Yelp so this review doesn't bother me one bit. The menu said one grilled ham and cheese sandwich and a bowl of chicken noodle soup for $5.69. I saw that a bowl of chili was 10 cents more than chicken noodle soup so I asked the server if I could substitute chili for chicken noodle soup and pay the extra ten cents. She said "oh no we can't substitute." I was, like, are you serious? 10 cents? She apologzed and said she would ask, but it was to no avail. Any restauant where the owner is that tight can take a flying leap. There are so few restaurants in the area, they only have business by default. And, if you are on a salt restricted diet, don't get the chicken noodle soup. You'll die of a salt overdose. I gave it two stars for the sandwich because it was good, otherwise, this place is a joke. read more

The restaurant is dated and dark, and the menu was pretty basic. We ordered oatmeal, eggs, pancakes, and sausage... The oatmeal was stale, everything else was just ok. The coffee wasn't great, and the water came in glasses slightly larger than a shot glass size. It was some drama when we asked for larger glasses, and the waitresses put on a soap opera type performance the whole time we were there. The food is decent, blue collar type with daily specials on the board as you come in or attached to the menu on index cards with paper clips. Nothing fancy but that's OK because the locals like it and the regulars wouldn't have it any other way! Out of town and looking for a family diner. First of all, beware they only accept cash (had to leave and go back for that reason - a little inconvenient). The staff was very friendly and accommodating. My husband had the baked steak and really enjoyed his meal. The kids and I got burgers and chicken tenders and we were not impressed at all. this is for the wintersville truck stop sonny boy restaurant. - The food is good, but the service is questionable. hit or miss really. some servers can be heard complaining about tips, and/or refusing to deal with certain customers 'telling them how to do their job' while at the same time not doing thier job very well. while the staff is 'polite'; grumblings can be heard within earshot of customers all the time. i live nearby so i come back frequently because the food is good and reasonably priced, and there are few restuarants nearby that are open early in the day. (most open around 1-3 pm). it is not all of the wait staff but really only 2-3 of them that i hear complaining frequently. Also, getting your food can sometimes be quick, but sometimes can feel like an eternity. They seem to be having problems staffing as well from the sounds of it. A secret shopper might want to pay a visit. Overall the food is a step up from the previous restaurant that was here; 'Kings'. but the service is sometimes a step down (it varies by day it seems). One server sits here moping as i write this review; saying 'i just want to go home, people are mean, hateful'. yet i have not heard any customers in my vicinity be mean or hateful. You are here to do a job and get paid, not complain where customers can hear you.
