The ribs were not as real as I would like but okay and the green bean casserole needs improvement as does the rolls but not terrible. Surprised at the varied reviews, maybe I just don't know good Texas BBQ. Stopped in after a flight for takeout and got a two meat platter. The place smells incredible just walking in. Lunch came about 2:15 pm. Empty as expected with occasional trickle and carry outs from UTD across the street. Order 1: 2 meat with Sliced Brisket & pulled chicken. Side: green bean casserole & baked beans. The pulled chicken may have had a smoked flavor but it was impossible to tell due to extreme saltiness. We both agreed this was a "never again" item. The Sliced brisket on the other hand had a visible smoke ring but was overdone or perhaps had been held too long in a bin. It was not bad but I've had so much better and would not buy a Lb of this meat to go like I do at the Sonny Bryan's across from Southwest Medical. That one is very consistent and usually on point particularly with the meats. To be fair we ate the 3 slices of brisket (drenched in sauce) but I'm disappointed and would look for other options and not this location at the time of day. The roll was cold but not stale. It just was meh and didn't add anything to the meal. The beans were also just barely better than most canned beans. The may have been canned and then touched up but not good. I wanted good beans and these were not that. The casserole looked good enough but taste was flat. Tasted like green beans with fried onions and cream of something soup but missing flavor. They had salt and that was not missing but they were not notable at all. The green beans did have a little snap and were probably made from fresh but they gave their tenderness for nothing. It was a fail. Order 2: Chopped barbecue sandwich. Sandwich was decent and meat adequately sauced to be more tender with a perceptible smokiness. It wasn't great brisket and the base meat wasn't particularly tender but as stated the sauce helped compensate. Positive note was they did give a discount for seniors but price had nothing to do with the meal experience. My visiting missionary friend and family absolutely loved the food. I'd promised them some great Q and the folks at Sonny's delivered. More than that, I want to post a HUGE thankyou to the staff, Lola in particular, for bailing me out of what could have been a catastrophe of monumental proportions. I'd driven up from Kingsland, TX, following a crazy Google GPS Route and my phone's battery gave out... 1/4 mile from the store! I coaxed enough juice into it to get me to Sonny's, but then I was totally stuck! Everything I needed to find the place where my friend was staying was trapped in my useless phone! I couldn't call him to tell him why I was so late. That's where Lola earned my undying gratitude. After explaining my plight, she let me use their wireless charger AND printed out the directions I needed to follow to get to my destination! It's been years since I have eaten here but with a power outage and the smell in the air as I drove past I pulled a U-Turn and went in for a bite. The service was great as was the food. Had a Sliced Brisket BBQ Sandwich here today plus some BBQ Beans. It was good but I prefer their location on Inwood in the Hospital District. It's open 24 hours which is nice if you're in that area at night. I'm used to David's BBQ and Hurtardo's BBQ in Pantego and Arlington. Get more meat and I prefer the sides there. I'll remember Sonny's when Harold and I delivering Kosher Meals on Wheels and need a convenient place to have a good lunch. Ok- the first time I went I ordered the sliced Brisket sandwich without bread and 1 side of coleslaw. Excellent! Today (Tuesday) I wanted the same thing and was informed that was the "Monday" special by the cashier. Anyway I ordered the same thing but it came with 2 sides ($14.99 v. $12.99) I ordered coleslaw and baked beans. They "barbecued" baked beans are mushy pinto beans way overcooked in barbecue sauce. Okay, I had high hopes for this place, and I was disappointed. When you hear the name Sonny Bryant, you usually think of high quality old fashioned good old fashion BBQ. I can't say the food was decent, I had a mixed plate of sausage which was terrible, ribs which were okay and pork which was dry. It was lunch time and you had the normal crowds at shuffles in but again I was not impressed with the food at all Would I go there again, no I would not recommend this place to anyone. I lived around the corner from this restaurant for years. It used to be so great and one of my favorite go-to places to eat. But wow, this place has gone downhill. I still love the restaurant layout and amenities. Clean and orderly. But the Food was simply awful. I had the two meat platter with jalapeno sausage and pulled pork with an okra side and BBQ beans. MEATS: The sausage was shriveled up and dry and the pulled pork was mushy. Both should have never been served to a customer. The okra was good, but served at room temperature (obviously not cooked to order). And the beans, well, you can't screw that up. My son had the wings, and they were huge. He is a wing expert and gave them a 4 out of 5. My wife had the smoked turkey, and it was also served at room temperature, but it did taste good. Finally, this place was known for the best rolls in town. Not any more. The rolls were cold, dry and looked dehydrated - no longer fresh. This is very sad. read more

It's no hidden secret that I'm a big fan of Sonny Bryans. I used to like going to the one off of Inwood until the quality started going down hill. I decided to give the other Sonny Bryans a chance and this one did not disappoint. The food is always on point and has the smokey flavor to it. Great portions of food on each plate and the kids plate is staaaacked. The cherry on top for me is any restaurant that gives me a soft warm buttered up roll every time I go gets a 5 star automatically. I have never understood why the locations that are away from the mothership (Inwood) cannot even get close to the original. To me, the only thing they share in common are the name. Let's just be straight, this place is average and shares something in common with most other barbecue restaurants and that is that they rely too much on their meats and not enough emphasis is placed on their sides. When we ordered the fried okra, he asked if we prefer to have them crispy because that's how he likes them. That's not an option on the menu that I could see, but it was a wow moment for us. The turkey was delicious and I liked the seasoning on the fries. The mac and cheese was okay, but nothing stand out about it. My hubs ordered the 1/2 combination plate with fried okra and french fries. He said that his ribs were not good and really didn't have much to them. It was the wife's birthday and after a fabulous breakfast, review coming up, we took a nap like a good python family and focused on dinner. The place was dead, so it allowed in case Cashew decided to scream like a mad man. The man at the register was friendly and welcoming to us. If you're interested in curb side, they have a steady line of customers. The establishment has a kids menu so the 2 boys had brisket and the other ribs. They come with a side and drink. The birthday girl ordered 2 meat plate and I had the full rack of ribs and half pound of moist brisket. The booths were big enough for a family of five. The brisket had a very good smoke taste yet a bit dry. I guess Covid had another victim due to a lack of customers. The ribs on the other hand were almost fall of the bone. They had a slight coat of BBQ that kept each bite scrumptious. It price was a bit steep at $59 bucks yet for The Mother of Cashew it was worth it and I would recommend this place. read more

The ribs were never smoked, strictly oven, and had no discernible flavor whatsoever. I returned them, and was barely offered another choice, then got some boned out chicken with a terrible season, and no smoke, and a dry brisket with the same affliction. Went here when i was in the area in 2nd week of Jan. I used to visit this place back in 2008-2009 and enjoyed their bbq platters. This time around the food was not up to the mark.
