These guys are lucky I feel generous enough to give them more than one star. We had gone to a few places and they closed early for the July 4 weekend. We thought we'd come here since the parking lot was full and we do like BBQ. Mistake. Our first clue was when we came in the door and noticed they were set up like a traditional restaurant with table service. Real BBQ is provided as counter service by a pitmaster. The second clue was when we were taken to our seats past numerous tables that had not yet been bussed. They sat with dirty plates for our entire meal. Sorry folks but that stuff has to get cleaned up ASAP or you invite bad things. We were tired from traveling and hungry so we ordered something and waited. Our server kept apologizing for the kitchen being slammed. We noticed other diners were not pleased either. We waited quite awhile so we expected when the food arrived at least it would be hot. Nope. I had a pulled pork sandwich and with a very soggy bun. It had obviously been ready for some time. My wife had a brisket burger that was lukewarm. The good news is the meat was tender, but it lacked any real smokey flavor. At least the sauces were good. Making matters worse, our server smelled of cigarette smoke. obviously taking too many smoke breaks to deal with the stress. There was little redeeming value to this place. Don't go here. I wish I could give them 5 stars! This was our first time eating here in over two years. They have remodeled and cranked up the recipes. The food is fantastic. They have revamped the salad bar and it's deliciously fresh. I couldn't get enough. The chicken was delicious! The beans were wonderful. The server, Joe, was fantastic. He has been there for 14 years and has served us many times in the past. There were several servers still there. Apparently the company takes care of their employees to have such retention. Now the down side... we waited for 45minutes to be seated. That's not all together unusual for Sonny's BBQ (it's that good) but the restaurant was half empty. It was 4pm on a Sunday afternoon and we were traveling. Maybe the were in shift change but it would've been nice to have been made aware of the expected delay. We were waiting, along with several other hungry patrons, in a mostly empty restaurant. Again...FOOD WAS AMAZING and WORTH THE WAIT! Haven't been here in a number of years and could not have been more pleased with the turn-around ! Top quality food, expanded menu, great service & a remodel!! Sonny's is now our "go to" barbecue restaurant!! Almost hate to write this because I'm afraid if it gets more popular, we to stand in line ! 11-3-18 Oh dear !! Am back & it was terrible !! I ordered a pulled pork salad & it arrived "soaked" in ranch dressing which I didn't order & if I had would have gotten it on the side! Ate it anyway but it was all ice burg lettuce and a few chopped bell peppers !! My husband got a side salad with no dressing but lots of tomatoes. He got Ranch too but since it was on the side, he could ask for 1000 Island. But, it tasted so bad he couldn't eat any of his salad. I got his tomatoes off it and added them to mine BUT they were CANNED tomatoes & that stopped me from finishing my salad! Don't know what a lot of the negative reviews were all about. Solid good food, nice clean and new atmosphere and great service. Not sure what more anyone can expect. This place has good pulled pork. I love smoked pig butt and this is the place to go, The sides are kind of high for the size of the portions unless you order a dinner then you get plenty. OK more than I care to eat. The service is usually good but sometimes reminds me of being at a hair cutting place with the banter of the waitresses. The service is usually fast and the food is fixed to order. One thing to remember is don't go here after church because people with kids flock here and no one wants to hear your brat screaming or beating on the table and for that matter kicking the freckin seat. Sometimes I would like to smack a parent in the head for allowing this to go on in a restaurant . I didn't have your kids and I should not be subjected to their misbehaving. I for one would like the building to burn so they could/would clean it and start over. It always feels greasy to me. I know the food is good or clean since they have "A" ratings from the health department. I have been in other Sonny's and it must be the wood or something that feels or looks dirty. Avoid the one in Jackson. One time we ordered and the drinks were not out yet. As my brother-in-law passes going to the bathroom a lady was tasting the teas to see which was sweet or not. read more

I love Sonnys but was highly disappointed tonight. We got sat down as well as others but none of us were getting any service. We waited for 40 minutes and not one person came up to us. They continuously sat people down but they never got service either. People around us started to leave so we did as well. I hope this problem gets fixed because we do like to eat here. read more

I'm a Regular now at Sonny's. The ribs are tender and flavorful. I love the chicken wings and the variety of sauces offered. I can make a meal out of the Salad Bar! Staff is always friendly and service is good. read more

Very piss poor customer service and the drive thru menu does not list all the prices for items they sell. My first visit to Sonny was less than Okay. After some wrangling with the smart aleckey drive thru worker I placed my order and patiently waited for my turn to pay. If it was not for the fact that I was picking up an order for someone else I would have drove off. The person working drive thru should have stayed at home, she was rude. As opposed to saying hello or something cordial she gives me a cold unconcerned stare and says what did you order. I grabbed the gear shift and rev'd the engine, but I took a deep breath and repeated my order for the 4th time !! Stopped by at 3:00 last Friday. Lunch rush was over but tables were not cleaned so we were told to wait...outside!!! It was hot, no place to sit, so we left as did the couple behind us! My husband and I went there on a Monday night. We were seated very fast. The waitress took our order and brought my husband a plate for his salad. While he was making the salad, he asked her for silverware. She didn't bring it. Finally I got her attention and she brought it over. We waited a while for our food and when it was brought out, it was cold. The warmest thing was the baked beans. My husband said that he was too hungry to send it back so we ate some of it. Today I came in for lunch and was seated quickly and promptly upon arrival at 12:01. By 12:03 I was greeted by my server Joe who had outstanding customer service. By 12:09 I had my drinks and an appetizer delivered and my food ordered. By 12:13 my food was served nice and hot. The menu had many options and the presentation of my plate was very appetizing. I ordered the whole hog sandwich meal deal and it was a wonderful sandwich with different meats combined together, served with fresh hot fries. They also have over the roof amazing sweet tea! The time between being seated, orders taken, and food arriving was very fast and on point. I give this bbq restaurant a 5 star review because during rush hour, with a clean business, a wide option range of food and sides to choose from, and outstanding food and customer service from Mr. Joe I will definitely be back! Worst experience I have ever received in life. We called two hours ahead to notify that we had a large party coming in. The worker on the line said no problem, they will take care of us. We got to the location, no long wait, was seated in a timely manner, but from there it all declined. We arrived at 6:35pm and ordered shortly after no later than 6:50pm. The food came out right at 8:00pm, however we all had to alter our orders, due to running out of ribs. Some guests at the table canceled their entire order, being they ordered all you can eat ribs. It was the worst. The server kept saying their GM was out of town on conference and this is why they have no food to serve. I visited Sonny's on Saturday afternoon. It wasn't too busy during this visit. Asia the hostess seated us and was very pleasant! Our waiter was Joe and he too, throughout the duration of the visit was great. I ordered the South Carolina sandwich with no mustard sauce and a side salad with Ranch. My side salad came first. The ranch "dressing" was mire like a dance sauce. The "dressing" was very runny and I had to request extra twice, but even all of that ran straight through the salad. Ultimately I just had to dip my salad I. The dressing cup to ensure it had "dressing" coverage. When my sandwich came, the bread was very hard on one side. So I took it to the front and Asia assisted me with getting it remade. Delante' or Devante' made the initial sandwich, and displayed his dismay, which I could see from the hostess podium, when told it had to be remade. Once I got the re-made one, it had the mustard sauce and had to be sent back again to be remade. Once I received it for the 3rd time, this time it wasn't toasted on either side of the bun. So I simply settled for what it was and moved on. Delante'/Devante requires a serious work ethic/attitude adjustment if he so chooses to work in the industry/field he is in. My requests were not outrageous or excessive to say the least, but any request that was made should not have been met with the attitude he displayed...where I could see it. read more

While the food is good the service can be questionable at times. I asked a server about a special price that was showing on the board and she literally snapped at me because the special advertised didn't start for another week or two, apparently. I went twice in one week and ordered the same thing both times, one time it was fantastic and the next time it didn't have any flavor to it. More than once I've gone through the drive through and the portions were tiny when I got them home and the next time there was ample portions of the same order. It's never consistent. I've overheard the employees talking bad about each other and it's clear some of them don't like their co-workers. If you are there close to shift change you can feel the tension if one server has to take over for a table already served. The servers aren't concerned with the customer unless it's their table and they are getting the tip from it, otherwise they ignore you. I use to go more often but to honest, the employees bickering made me nervous and I went there to relax and enjoy a meal, not hear people moaning and groaning, I hear that all day already. We stayed at a hotel in the area and decided to stop here to eat. It was so good!!! We have lived in NC for 6 years and they have vinegar based barbecue so it was really nice to have the smoked ketchup based barbecue. The egg roll appetizer was delicious. We love Sonny's! I always get the lunch chicken and have never been disappointed. The entire time I was pregnant I could've lived off of their fries and spicy pickles from the salad bar. In the past I've had some not great experiences with waitstaff, but recently we've had much better service. I've been going here for years and don't think I'll be stopping anytime soon! read more

One member of out party got up and went to talk to manager who said they would check into issue then did not even come out on the dining room floor to respond or even inspect the room. Very disappointed in food. I ordered the all you can eat ribs and 2-3 of the ones on plate were ok at best. I ordered some more and when they came out they were tough and dry and had absolutely no flavor at all. I added salt and pepper and some bbq sauce just hoping to make it edible. I had been told it was good since remodel however it is not. All the food is Just food ordered in from Sysco and headed in the microwave. I will not be going back and I will not recommend. I went in to place a to-go order for lunch today. This is the first time I have been to Sonny's in over a year. Although there was some problem with the lady's order in front of me, I got no acknowledgement; not even a "someone will be right with you, sir." I have long not understood how restaurants in the lunch business still don't get the concept that many people who come into their establishments do so on their lunch "break". FYI: This is a set time somewhere between a half to a full hour that employers provide to their employees to nourish themselves midday. Many said employees on lunch break count on these establishments to be mindful of this and get diners in and out in a timely manner. Unfortunately, I did not receive such awareness from Sonny's Barbecue today. After ten minutes of waiting behind ONE PERSON and I had yet to place an order, I gave up, walked out, went across the street to Dickey's, and was in and out in less than five minutes. The only reason this gets two stars is because I am rating 2 different things. I used to get smoked chicken salad [No lettuce] and it was wonderful. That location is now closed and went to other location in Jackson, MS area. However today got 2#'s to take to X-mas party - HORRIBLE and had to trash it. It consisted of 80% Mayonnaise and egg whites??? Where was the chicken? Waste of hard earned $$ Plus drove 30 miles to get the Smoked Chix Salad. Love the food. Close by. Melissa is our choice for "waitress of the year". Big portions. Our son in MD loves the BBQ sauces and we send him several bottles for Christmas. We manage to eat at the store a couple of times a month and get to go salads and pulled port a couple more times a month.
