During this incredibly crazy time in our lives with the Covid-19 pandemic, it is nice to have a bit of normalcy in our lives. We live in Jacksonville and went to Savannah to visit family over the weekend. On our way home, we stopped to grab dinner at Sonny's BBQ in St. Mary's. The dining room was still not open, but we were able to order at the drive thru. The staff were very nice and seemed genuinely grateful for us to be dining with them tonight. Ok so it's been a few years since I've been to Sonny's. I went when I was living in Georgia however I remember in great detail how tasty and flavorful the food was. This was our go to place when we wanted barbecue. There are different flavors of barbecue sauce which is all delicious. The price is reasonable, the restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly. We stopped here on our little road trip because we had seen them all along the highway in Georgia. It was a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The salad bar has all the usual fixings and is worth the $8 tab. For an extra $3 you can tack on a meat to go with. I had the pulled pork which was a little dry but not bad. My wife and daughter had some chicken which was much better in my opinion. Looking at around $10-$15 a head for the adult meals. Not a bad price for what you get. read more

Good BBQ joints are fairly common in this area. The reason to pick Sonny's over the others is the all-you-can-eat salad bar. Add the salad bar to a BBQ plate or get it as a meal. It has a decent variety and won't bore you before gorging on fresh produce. Fresh banana pudding and fresh corn bread are sometimes in the bar. Consider those an appetizer and dessert. read more

This location is filthy. Upon entry there was trash down each isle. Half of the booths were not fit for a new set of guests to eat. The servers are wearing dirty T-shirt's that are tucked into aprons. If the appearance wasn't off putting enough we had to send back a plate because there was stuck on food and a cup with sweet tea that had corn stuck to the inside. I ordered nothing because I was grossed out by the lack of cleanliness. My family ate from the salad bar that was subpar at best. The server was in such a rush she messed up a water order. Driving down 95S I saw the signs for at least an hour advertising Barbecue. This was really good appetizers , I had the redneck egg rolls and man were they tasty. I got the sampler plate as an entree and it was HUGE. My sides were coleslaw and sweet potato. Both left a little to be desired. Coleslaw was to wet and the sweet potato was overcooked and mushy. Have come to this location multiple times without issue. Recently, management seems to have changed and so have some of the workers. The whole feel of the restaurant has changed, and no one seems as friendly and down-homey as they used to. We came tonight to celebrate a birthday in the family, arriving at about 7:00., stayed until 8:15 (they close at 9 and still had people in multiple tables around the restaurant). The waitress we got tonight was short with us and rude, a petite blonde lady who looked young. Came to the table maybe twice after we got our meals. Forgot a couple of things we asked for (which wouldn't be an issue if she didn't act grumpy when we asked for her to bring them again). Acted inconvenienced by our presence and generally unhappy to be there. She may have been dealing with some things at home or in her personal life, I'd like to believe, and I'd sincerely hope it wasn't just us she was frustrated with, but she clearly did not enjoy what she was doing tonight. After we paid for our food (she brought our ticket out kind of early), me, my sister, and my mom all noticed her avoiding our table. She was putting away sauces at the table next to us, looked over, and rolled her eyes when she saw us still at the table. We noticed her hanging on a back wall with two other waitresses gesturing toward our table a couple of times--something I normally wouldn't care about if her expressions hadn't ALSO been annoyed. Kept interrupting our eating asking to take plates away when kids and two adults were still eating, clearly trying to rush us out. Not an ideal birthday celebration. Again, maybe she wasn't feeling well and needed to get home. Maybe she'd been working WAY longer than normal and was tired. Still, her professionalism was extremely lacking and I was NOT impressed. I don't know where old management and workers have gone, and I'm not dumb enough to think corporate will magically bring them back, but the restaurant felt cleaner, happier, and far more comfortable when they were there. Sad to know one of our favorite places to eat a casual dinner has been bumped way down the list. I walked in and was seated immediately (the restaurant was only about full). I sat down with my menu and debated in my mind about what to get. Would I have the All you can eat ribs or the brisket. After a few minutes I decided to get the ribs. I put my menu down and started checking my email. I look at the time and it's 7:14. No one has come to my table to ask me if I want a drink or take my order. I continue looking at a few emails and notice the time is now 7:19. Still no one! Should I get someone's attention or should I just wait to see if anyone comes to the table. I've always trusted Sonny's for some good consistent BBQ and this was our first visit to the chain in many years since we live out of state. We showed up on a Friday night and were promptly seated and greeted by our waitress who was phenomenal. Service was spot on throughout our meal. The food on the other hand was very disappointing. The sliced pork had a rancid flavor and the pulled pork seemed old, tired, and dry. We ended up feasting on the fries, cornbread, and broccoli all of which were good. I just can't get past the horrible flavor and quality of the meat which is obviously the star at a BBQ joint. I am not typically a fan of BBQ (I don't like pork, really). This place was good though. The amount of food offered was a bit overwhelming, but I suppose that is a good thing. I hear it gets crowded real quick, so I don't think this is a place I will go to often. I ordered ribs which were good, but what I really enjoyed and mostly ate was their salad bar and side dishes. Overall, this place was alright. The waitress came over, rather quickly to take our drink order. I dont think I had time to take my jacket off before we ordered drinks. The sweet tea was pretty good. The waitress had a good sense of humor too, joking with us a little before we ordered our meals. The portions were pretty big. I definetely couldn't finish my plate, there was just too much. Stopped here for lunch while traveling along I95. Restaurant is conveniently located for on and off access to I95. We had a quick lunch. I had pulled pork BBQ and chose cole slaw and baked beans as my sides. They had a variety of BBQ sauces available at the table. I liked the spicy version although it was not all that spicy. The meal was very good. The staff was efficient and friendly. They served soft drinks in huge glasses and graciously provided us cups to take the remaining drinks in the car. We saw numerous locations for this restaurant on our travels. Based on my experience here I'd be willing to give other locations a try. read more

I have stopped here with my family a couple times while driving home from vacation. We love Sonny's back home in Florida, so it is a popular place to stop for lunch on our way home. Of course, being on a road trip we want to stop and relax a bit, but were are still in a bit of a rush to get back on the road. And on our stop here last week service was SLOW... We spent much longer here than I expected, and that was a bit annoying. The food was fine. Exactly the same as we a are used to, and that is good. But the service was rough. We were all done eating and we all sat playing on our phones waiting for the check to come. At one point I started wondering if they had a different set-up from our home Sonny's and we needed to pay a cashier instead of our server. So just for slow service I'm going to take this one off the list for future visits, it was pretty unbearable. read more

There are better options if you want to drive a little (Captain Stan's in Woodbine). We hate st louis ribs and wanted to sub brisket but they refused to do it because "brisket isnt pork". The servers were quick with all orders and refilled all drinks well before it was all consumed. The food was well prepared and cost per portion ratio was on line with similar restaurants. Very very very disappointed. I was looking to the ribs. I called the restaurant for a pick up order. I ordered a full rack of st Louis ribs. I was told they dont provide full rack, they only order by weight. The lady told me that if I ordered the dinner it comes with about 10 pieces of ribs (bones). So I ordered the dinner and only got 5 ribs bones. Not good sonny's, this is the second time I leave a negative comment, and this is at a different restaurant. New added redneck egg rolls are absolutely amazing. They are reason enough to go here to eat. The pulled pork and slaw in these are succulent. As always the pork here is juicy and flavorful. The Mac and cheese is like it is from Mom's kitchen. With the drive through it is super convenient. I really love eating here, I only wish that they would season their fries. Very good BBQ for the area. I'm more familiar with the Texas locations and they don't have waitstaff as they do here. Leanne was a doll as were all the servers I was in contact with. We arrived at Sonny's few minutes after closing time and they told us they were closed, but on our way out the manager came to get us and told us to come in, that she will cook for us!
