Go to this place. Choose your cut of meat from the butcher. Add some sides at the cash (Baked potato, Baked Onion, etc). Sit down and enjoy the bean soup they bring you. If you are prepared you have brought your own bottle of wine - start drinking it. Sample the four or five kinds of salsa they bring to your table. Then when they bring the steak and sides, enjoy a crazy delicious meal. We've been coming here for years - it never fails to deliver. On top of it all the service is always very pro and very friendly. If there was a sixth star I would give it. The best steak of my life. Better than Rincon de Buenos Aires, better than The House of Prime Rib in San Francisco. Just incredible. Get the Vacio. I ordered it medio rojo; they tend to cook a little less than requested. Yeah, the sides are delicious, too. The way it works is a little unusual: go to the back where there's a butcher shop. Tell the folks what cut you want and how much, either by holding your fingers apart, or by weight. (Then watch them eyeball it and cut to within a few grams of what you asked - a couple times I've been there, the accuracy has been exact or 1 gram off). Tell them how you want the meat done, then they hand you a package with your meat and some notes. Pay at the cashier, where you also order sides, then get seated. The waiter who comes to your table is there for drinks, and you pay/tip him separately from the meat and sides you got earlier. Just go. read more

The food was amazing. Walked in at 2pm and had no wait. Our server recommended our steaks. We had a ribeye and NY steak. The NY steak was a perfect balance of fatty and lean. We also had a few margaritas and guacamole with chips. The sides we got were a baked potato and Mac and cheese. We also got a cheesecake at the end. It was such a great meal. I ordered their pizza which I've never done before and I have to say it was extremely good and only around six dollars. This is a gem. The steaks we had were unbelievably good. It's a unique format to me, pick the type of steak and they'll cut it to your preference in front of you. The typical sides are available, the spicy mushrooms were amazing. They even had beer they make themselves and it was good. The service was very good and the staff did everything they could to make our dinner special. I'd eat here everyday if I could. Thanks for a memorable night. Super disappointed. We went there last year and our steaks were cooked perfectly. Today, my husband ordered a cowboy cut medium rare and I ordered ribeye medium thin cut. When the meat came put the cowboy cut was below rare and mine was rare. When I told the waiter, he said it was because the cowboy cut was so thick and I asked then why my ribeye thin wasn't cooked properly. He didn't have an answer. This is definitely a hidden treasure. Sort of in a random location in Nuevo Vallarta, only a few minutes from the Vidante resorts (Grand Luxxe, Grand Mayan, etc.), Sonora Al Sur is perfect for anyone looking to get authentic Mexican cuisine without breaking the bank. Our cab driver recommended this spot, and many of the staff at the Grande Luxxe said they had heard good things, so we decided to check it out. Not only was the staff attentive, fast, and (mostly) bilingual, but the food was delicious and well-presented... at least better than one would first expect upon entering. Basically, you choose your meat (they have tons of options), the amount you want, and they prepare to your liking. They also have a good amount of sides to accompany the main course, including mac n cheese, mushrooms, baked potato, and asparagus... All of which were delicious. Your meal comes with beans, a variety of salsas (ranging from mild to MUY CALIENTE) and tortillas. Speaking of which, they make their own tortillas from scratch, and they even let us try to make some, which was really fun for me and my wife. All in all, the staff was friendly and attentive, and the food was legit and beyond fulfilling. I only give it 4 stars cause they had no tequila! This was my favorite restaurant in Puerto Vallarta. The place has the best service along with the most incredible steaks ever! You get to pick your meat as they bring the raw slabs out in front of you to choose. Omg was it ever delicious! My husband had the Delmonico New York and was enough to feed two people! There were more waiters that catered to us all evening and then came out for my birthday with a fire crackling candle and a huge decorated plate with a chocolate lava cake and ice cream! Not only did they sing to me but I got hugs and kisses!! By far a must when on vacation here. Perfect location perfect food and a perfect way to spend the evening while dining out! read more

We were in PV a couple years ago, and my wife had done a 5hit ton of research before we left. She'd read reviews, and planned going here for dinner one evening. It was absolutely the best meal in all PV/NV, and for 4 people including drinks etc., was with every penny of the $80 some bucks it cost us. If you're ever in Puerto Vallarta or Nuevo Vallarta absolutely go here if you want meat. It's like a butcher shop that also cooks your dinner for you. Very highly recommend. read more

I'm not sure when this restaurant changed over, but what you see on Yelp and what you get in person are two different things. We arrived around 8:15 p.m. online it says that the restaurant closes around midnight. We were told that we couldn't order pizza because the oven was not fired up since they were going to be closing at 10:00. The price that they gave us for the steak over the phone was significantly different than what we saw when we arrived. The steak was severely overcooked and had no flavor. They told us they only put salt and no other seasoning on their steaks. This may work if it's a prime cut of beef, but it's definitely not that. They served as cold appetizer beans that were supposed to be hot. There was no salad dressing other than blue cheese. They had no mashed potatoes. We could only do baked potatoes. We ordered the half order of ribs and literally got one bone and a half. Power went out twice while we were there. Many of the issues we could roll with if the food was good. But for the food to be lacking flavor and heat, it was just too much for us. After taking a 40 minute Uber to get there. We would have done better going to a nicer steakhouse in the city and paying a bit more. read more

Went here for Christmas dinner. Kinda different how you order. I went for it and chose the tomahawk. Don't make this choice lightly. It's a 3 pound 1.4 kilo piece of beef. I also chose it medium rare. Don't do this. Unless you want a cold pink center. Meat this thick can't be cooked approx. 3" thick. On a grill. Ask for medium you will not be disappoint. Side were great I had the potato and onion. Which come out whole and large. Wife had a rib eye small and a salad. Both were excellent. Th most exciting part........ all for less than 60$ US. This is one of our favorite restaurants. It serves good food, great size portions & is reasonable. You receive complimentary bean soup. It is also free but you must ask for it - chips & dips. Watch out the dips are hot. Start with the mild one & work your way to the spiciest. Seek the advice of the waiter on which is which. As far as the baked potato & the salad, you can definitely share these two with your companion. The platter of asparagus & the platter of mushrooms & tomatoes are so delicious, you won't want to share. I took one star off because the selection of beef was sparse. As far as how you want your meet cooked, they tend to undercook, if you want medium, order well done. Dennis & I ordered New York strip medium & it was rare. We will be back! read more

Oof. That deescalated quickly. I've been coming here for a few years. Every time we come to PV we come here a few times during our stay. As a ritual, first meal we had during our trip, we came here. Nobody spoke English at all - which was normal. But they got our order wrong in several aspects. We got two prime ribeyes and asked them to be done medium well. One came out perfect - the other one (same exact cut and size) came out totally rare - so I asked them to throw it back on the grill. Took 20 minutes to get my steak back and it was a hockey puck. Couldn't even finish it. Service was super slow - waited nearly 45 minutes to get our food. Then the order was wrong, so hungry that we didn't even say anything about the order being wrong but the steak just killed it for me. What an experience. Service is inconsistent, but the experience, the food and price are worth it. Walk to the back, tell the butcher which meat and size you want, and how you want it cooked. Then walk your meat to the cashier and tell her which sides you want. Then go have a seat. Within minutes, your food arrives to your table and you're in steak heaven. For $50usd, we had two 10oz filets, asparagus, baked potato, grilled onion, guacamole, 4 rum and cokes , and a margarita. Make sure you ask for homemade tortillas! read more

We've been coming here for years. At least one meal per trip to PV. Somewhere there is probably a 5 star star review from me from six years or seven years ago. But I've noticed a steady decline in the quality of the meat (which is why you go to a steakhouse) over the past couple of years. Tonight's visit convinced me that their meat quality has deteriorated significantly and even their sides are not what they used to be. My wife and I both ordered the vasio cut....usually a tender flavourful piece of meat. Tonight it was stringy, tough and almost impossible to cut through the tendons etc. Even the sides seemed to lack their usual pizazz. Asparagus was tough and no flavour. Mashed potatoes were bland. Portabello mushroom were good. We asked for blue cheese dressing for our salad but were told they were out. So we chose balsamic dressing. A few minutes later the waiter showed up with blue cheese dressing. Sorry. Just doesn't work on top of balsamic. Anyway, this will be the last time we eat here. There are too many great places to eat in the area to suffer through poor quality and quite expensive beef. read more

My husband and I visited here at the recommendation of his folks who come to Nuevo Vallarta yearly and it did not disappoint. As the other reviewer mentions, from the outside, this looks like a roadside diner, and while there is certainly a casual feel inside, the food was truly 5-star restaurant quality. After a quick explanation from a bilingual waiter, we ordered our cuts of meet and had them prepared by the butcher right in front of us. Off we went to select our sides and send our steaks to the large, smoke filled barbecue patio. At our seats, lovely salsas and guacamole were waiting for us, along with a really flavorful frijoles stew of some sort. When the steaks came out, the flavors carefully danced the line between enhancing the meat with rich smoky flavor, while still allowing the clearly high quality steak to shine through. We also ordered the Mac and Cheese and a salad. The macaroni was particularly exceptional with smoky bacon and creamy cheese. We would highly recommend this to anyone in the area. Unlike many other resort restaurants in Nuevo, this seems to be a place for mostly locals. You should probably come prepared with pesos and a sense of adventure. read more

Sonora al Sur is easily one of the best restaurants I've ever been to in Mexico. Despite it's outward appearance of a roadside grill, this place is a quality steakhouse. The service was top notch having a variety of waiters dropping by to check on us throughout our meal. We also had a head waiter who was bilingual walk us though the menu and ordering process. It's a unique process because you go inside the meat locker to order your steaks. First you pick your cut and then your thickness and the butcher cuts your steak right in front of you. I ordered the 'vacio' steak at the recommendation of the waiter and was well served, it was amazing and cooked perfectly. The sides we got were also amazing. We got the Mac and cheese, wine cooked mushrooms and asparagus. They nailed it on all fronts. When we went last night they had draft beer on special, either light or dark for $60 pesos you got 2 mugs of beer roughly 24 oz per glass. The beer was also delicious, way better than your standard corona or pacifico from the can or bottle. For desert I forgot that Mexican cheesecake at resorts is always terrible so I ordered a cheesecake and was surprised that it was amazing! They use a more New York style recipe and they knocked it out if the park. If you are in Nuevo Vallarta or puerto Vallarta I highly recommend making the short trip to Sonora al Sur for an amazing dinner experience unlike anything you've ever had! read more

This place is a hidden gem. Let's start with, it has great air conditioning! Great if you are visiting PV on the hotter months. Secondly, this place is BYOB, or the do have bottles of wine to purchase. When you sit down, they bring out 4 different salsas, corn tortilla chips and a cup of ref ride beans! The beans are out of this world! So far, you can't go wrong. Next, you go back to the butcher case and select your cut of meat and the thickness. Next time we will encourage the butcher to cut a bit thicker steak, especially if you are used to an American size steak. ( price per kg). Then you pick side items, they grill and prepare it for you! My husband and I both had rib eye steaks, French fries (done nice and chrispy), sautéed mushrooms and the queso panella and a bottle of wine, it right around $60 US. As we walked into the locale, a distracted young lady half explained how the ordering is done. So you walk over to the back of the building, order your beef cut, then walk over some other spot and order your sides. It's only until then that you're given a table. In our case, the girl had already gone back and we didn't know which table to go to. As we were seated, we start d ordering drinks, and this went wrong too. They took for ever to get our drinks, they actually never brought mine. Once the food came out, I was disappointed in the way it was cooked. Overall, a very dissatisfying visit. read more

What to do when you're on a solo foreign trip? Whip out old-faithful and have at it (the yelp app, you pervs). To start my food tour of Puerto Vallarta, I decided it was best to start on land. As I scrolled though, this restaurant caught my eyes, I wanted something low key and away from the tourist hot spots. Not my usually dinner time, but I arrived at 3pm, hoping to beat the crowds. Well, I failed because it was packed. Nevertheless, I was greeted by a lovely hostess, but because of my limited Spanish it turned to be more pointing, shrugging, and laughing than a conversion. Here's the deal, you first go to the meat counter to choose your meat and sides, then you go to the cashier to pay for your meal. Once done, you find your seat and the barman will come for your drink order which is put on a separate tab. I had a margarita on the rocks, it was perfect...Soo perfect that I pounded the first one, made eye contact with the barman, and had a gentleman's agreement that I needed another. By the time margarita # dose arrived, my steak and sides were being served concurrently. 30 glorious minutes later, I'm back sitting on a beach lounger cradling my food baby (#noregrets, not sure if I'm using this correctly), and watching the sunset. This is my favorite steak house on the planet. Tender and perfectly cooked meat in an old Mexico outdoor venue. The restaurant is part butcher shop and part grill/restaurant. You buy your meat from the shop and the grill will make it to your liking. A six peso taxi from any of Nuevo Vallarta's resorts make this a must do if you are in the area.
