This is my second time here. We came here last year. The prices for the meat have gone up 20-22% in one year- which is fine. They used to sell by kilo but now prices are qtr kilo. So I did the math from last year picture of menu and it is a 20-21% over a year. The service is 5 star. From when you arrive to have the butchers cut your meat, and the wait staff. All very nice and personable. The reason for the lower rating is the food quality. We ordered 4 different cuts. All were to be cooked 'medium' the thinner cut came back med well and the 3/4 inch cut came back medium. The filets came back rare. When we asked them to cook the rare filets they came back well done. We ordered some sides. The Mac and cheese was 'grainy' and not very good. The mashed potatoes were good. And the asparagus was fantastic. I like the seeing the tortillas/chips being made. The salsas they give you range from mild to very hot. I also like that they have free 'corkage' so bring a bottle of wine. If the food quality was better than this would be a five star read more

We went with our family...10 in all from 8 to 71. My ribeye was as good as any top steakhouse in Dallas. It was cooked to perfection and well seasoned. My son in law had the Tomahawk ribeye and ate every bite. Our Grandchildren varied between burgers and Mac and cheese. There was nothing left they enjoyed so much. Now to top this off the whole bill including drinks was a little over $200 USD. That's for 10!!! This place will see us again. read more

What a great experience! Unique in that you get to pick your steak type and thickness and then pick your side dishes. We also got beans and tortillas with the steak. Tons of food. Two rib eyes, a baked potato and a sidw of asparagus plus a salad for around $65 US. Tons of great staff. Highly recommend. Don't forget to tip appropriately though. We have been coming to Sonora al Sur for many years, and always bring a large group. This time, we could not have been more disappointed. The steaks came out raw, and we had to send them back several times. The side dishes did not come out for many of us, until we were just about done with the steaks. The quality of the best cuts that we purchased was poor; and very tough.Service was terrible; and we will not be going back. We had a reservation at 7:00. We arrived at 6:55, and greeted by two young girls. They said they did not have any reservation for us, but would have a table in ten minutes. At 7:15, I asked if our table was available. Agains, I was told no table, but just a couple of more minutes. At 7:30, I asked to speak to manager. Had dinner here at the recommendation of a friend. Wife had a t-bone and I had a rib eye. The steaks are purchased raw and cut and cooked to order. The steaks were very tender and juicy and had superb flavor. We had sides of mushrooms, garlic potatoes, and guacamole. All were very good. Although it is an order and pay at the counter place, there is still table service for beverages which was very attentive and friendly. One of most unusual parts is the ability to bring your own bottle of wine. I love this restaurant!!! it took a bit of getting used to because my Spanish needs to be brushed up on. once I got the hang of reading the menu and the flow of ordering my food, it is absolutely the most amazing experience ever. We loved this place!! It was a little overwhelming to order at first but one of the waiters helped us with the process for our party of 7. We ended up with an amazing and delicious meal that even my picky eaters enjoyed. Not great compared to the other food we've been eating on our vacation. Steaks were only OK. My sister asked for medium well and it was brought to her rare. She sent it back and it was gone for almost 20 minutes. She had to call the waiter over and ask where it was. When it returned it was still rare. She couldn't finish it. Sides were mediocre at best. Rice was not flavourful, potatoes were coated in a strange sriracha sauce that was not expected, mushrooms were bland. Wanted asparagus and filet mignon and neither were available. Before I ramble, the food was above average, the service was terrible. This was our second time here as we come to Nuevo Vallarta once a year. The last time was excellent. This time the food was very good, but our server copped an attitude from the beginning. We asked to order drinks and he acts like we are putting him out. Then after we get our food we ask for some butter for the flour tortillas. He tells us that will be an extra charge. For butter? That's about the time we remember we never got the corn tortillas everyone gets as an appetizer. We confirmed we were supposed to get them with the busboy who offered to correct the mistake, but we were almost done, so we passed. When the waiter started cleaning the table before we were finished is when I'd had my fill. It is very rare I don't leave a tip,even for less than good service, but this time I left nothing. I made sure the hostess knew of our feelings. She provided the obligatory "sorry", but that was about it. read more

This was our first night in Nuevo Vallarta and we were very hungry after a long travel day. Sonora Al Sur did not disappoint. We both had a Ribeye and it was delicious. We were a bit confused about how to order but once we figured out that you are supposed to go to the meat counter a pick your cut of beef then pay we were all set. The only negative aspect is they put your cut of beef in a styrofoam container and then take it to the kitchen to have it cooked they way you requested. I shudder to think of all that waste going to the landfill. They should find a more environmentally friendly way to package your selection. Service was great once we figured out what was expected. A great local steakhouse that is a don't miss destination for everyone staying in Nuevo Vallarta. If you are staying in Puerto Vallarta it is a bit of a distance. There is outside dining, but in the summer, I would recommend a table in the air conditioned dining area near the meat market. You select your meat in a market setting. The butcher cuts the steak the size requested, order your sides, pay the cashier and a few minutes later it is all delivered to your table. Plan to share the sides because the portions are very generous. I highly recommend the baked potato, the mushrooms and barbecued onion. Bring a good bottle of wine, or two, or three, to go with your meal; they are pleased to cork it for you. You will be pleasantly shocked at how little it costs. For a steakhouse, this may be one of the best bargains in Mexico. read more

You get there and you choose your cut of steak and it's cut to order. The cuts are FRESH and they have a great selection. Then you take it to the cashier where you also order your sides. Don't forget the tortillas! (I love corn which come with the steak but you can add a stack of flour which are delicious like my grandma used to make). Then you sit and get a hot, and fresh cup of boiled pinto beans with a variety of salsas. I could make a meal of just beans and tortillas. Lastly, the prices are phenomenal. This was my go to Steak Spot when I lived in Vallarta. Very casual, excellent meats cooked to perfection. You order at a butcher counter, point to the cut of meet you want, let the butcher know how thick you would like the steak and pick your side. Go find a seat and wait for your steak. What a great experience it has been. While driving with a friend stumbled upon this place. We did not know the routine that you have to select your own cut of meat, buy it and then give it to the waiter to cook it in the style you like. Reminded me of Sai Kong fishing village in Hong Kong but this is all things steak. Loved the customer service. We managed to communicate despite there were not many English speaking people including the lady who was checking us out with the meat purchase. Been there 7 times in the last 3 years ...love that place and recommend to everyone. read more

Had our dinner here this evening. I wasn't aware you could get great beef in the PV area. We have always opted for seafood or chicken. Coming from Western Canada and being used to AAA beef on the bbq weekly the standards can get a bit high. This restaurant stepped up. Very cool ambiance with the pick your own cut, thickness, cook to order and watch them prepare it. Reasonable sides to accompany the price beats most restaurants in the neighbourhood by about 40%. And for a high quality meal with awesome service that's a tough act to follow. We have another week and will be back for sure. read more

The food and service was 5 star, I went with a group of friends and was impressed. When you arrive, you will need to be seated, order your drinks and then go to the back and look at the menu. You can chose your cut, size and thickness of meat that is cut in front of you. Order your side dish.. ( one order is enough for two) after you pay by he weight, they take your meat and cook over a fire grill. This is a must go... The prices were great, two of us are for $50 bucks .. read more

We went here while in PV on vacation with friends who live in the Marina. What a great find, but be careful when you order, the portions are all huge and you'll way more food than you can possibly eat. Being our first time eating here, my wife and I ordered a salad, baked potato, asparagus and a Ribeye. The salad was big and beautiful, easily enough for 4, the potato was jumbo and one of the best baked potatoes I ever had, the asparagus was also a big serving and the steak was great. Oh, and the margaritas were the best we had all week long, they were special. And with everything the 4 of us had to eat and drink, I think the bill was like $80, probably about half what it would have been back home for something comparable. This was recommended by locals and visitors as well. We went there knowing you selected your cut of meat and they cut it in front of you. You pay and then let them know how you want it prepared. They offer lots of sides. We selected 2 Filet Mignon about 7oz,baked potato mushrooms asparagus. They give you a bean soup very good. The meat was cooked rare the way we like it the sides were excellent. With a beer and bottle of water we were in for $20.00 hard to beat. this place is so good!! at first you think it's just gonna be like one of those regular deli places, but it is so much better than that!!! we asked the butcher what he recommends and he said that he recommends the "Vacio Importado" steak, so that's what we got, and it was the most tastiest, juiciest, tenderest steak I have ever had!!!!! it was so good!! but you need to only get 1 or 2 sides with your meal because we got like 5 or 6 sides and the sides were good but if you get too many sides then you won't enjoy the steak like you want to. the mashed potatoes and baked potatoes are really good but the fries weren't that good. at least that's what I think. but I will tell you something, and that is that you shouldn't get the salad. the salad is good, but it's very filling, so you won't be able to enjoy your steak like you want to.
