Beautiful restaurant we were at the hotel that's attached to so we thought we'd give it a try good reviews. And considered one of the best restaurants around in Mexico City. It is a chain. It has other ones in the area. We had the New York steak 400 g it was OK not great. The other couple had it and had to send it back. It was so bad for them. I had the cauliflower roast which way I must say was delicious. The complementary bean dip with the chips was a nice touch and very good Service was good but they had hardly anything in English. we don't speak Spanish. They brought us an I pad with English, but it kept going out and they were just running around. So we had to keep calling them back for them to turn it back on. We got scammed badly! Husband and I went for dinner, look at the menu, husband ordered the ribeye stake for about $1500 pesos which is like $90 USD, then a cook stop by with a board with all the stake cuts, he shows husband the difference between stakes and sides, husband happy order the stake he pointed from the menu, we also order an appetizer, a side dish, and a couple of glass of wine, then we had dessert. When we got the check the stake was for like $3600 pesos or a bit over $200 USD, which is not even in the menu, the total was $300 USD. We were in shock. Paying the check happened so fast I didn't even get copy of receipt. The total with tip was $350 USD. We were staying in the hotel, we were told at front desk hotel guests gets 15% off in the hotel's restaurant, then server told us "Sonora is not part of the hotel". Food was good, ambience was good, but the scam was very bad. Fortunately we can afford paying expensive meals, but the experience of getting scam during vacation was unpleasant. That night we went back to the room and laughed, we travel all over the world and we know how to prevent scams, Sonora Grill is very sneaky, they really outsmarted us. We tried to not let the bad experience ruined the moment so we let it go. I'm back home in Hawaii, and recalling the experience makes stop by in yelp and give a heads up to tourists. We had a reservation for 2 people, tonight on Valentine's Day, at 6:30 pm. We were seated and waited about 10 minutes until our waiter came to bring us menus and greet us... We cancelled a different reservation to come here tonight because we wanted to stay closer to our base (we're literally staying upstairs in a suite at the Barceló). Since it's Valentine's Day and basically impossible to get a reservation anywhere else this last minute, we're back up in our room, ordering takeout food. And honestly, much happier. The music is bumping quite loudly, so a bit less intimate romancey, but the service is ON POINT. They have plenty of staff and tend to you quickly and efficiently. I must say the staff is their redeeming quality... they come over to check on me many times and even cracked a few jokes with me as I was eating alone. I was started with a refried bean dip, chips, and 4 salsas on the house. Also got the caesar salad & NY strip (classic and hard to fuck up).. well, I was quite disappointed. The steak was wayyyy under seasoned (but they brought me 4 different kinds of salt after a S&P request to season my own steak and cook it on the sizzling plate it came out on). In contrast, the Caesar was overloaded with toppings and extremely salty from the amount of cheese on it. While I needed something just quick and nearby, I wouldn't recommend coming here out of all the places in CDMX unless you're in dire need like me. I am unfortunately writing this because of a horrible experience me and my dining companion had at Sonora Grill on Reforma in Mexico City on New Year's Eve night. I have recently purchased an apartment down the street from the restaurant and had dined in the restaurant before at which time I had an amazing experience. Since I had such a great experience when I previously dined in the restaurant I decided to make a reservation for New Years Eve Dinner at 7:30. I made the reservation using open table on December 8th and the reservation was confirmed. Not only was the reservation confirmed but the restaurant reached out to me via whats app on December 27th to request that me and my guest select our main course for our reservation. I was not able to select at the time but responded that we would select ASAP. I sent our selections and a request to be seated close to a window via whats app on December 28th and received a confirmation through what's app saying "Le agradezco mucho Y haremos lo posible para darle una mesa por la Vendana" On December 31st me and my guest arrived at the restaurant at 7:20 and was told by the person at the host stand outside that the restaurant doesn't open until 8. I showed the gentleman at the host stand the confirmation for a 7:30 reservation but he insisted that the restaurant did not open until 8 and that we needed to enter through the hotel. We proceeded to the entrance in the hotel to find that the doors were locked so we returned to the host stand at which time we realized the entire staff were dining. At this point we asked to speak to a manager and we again showed proof that we were confirmed for a 7:30 reservation and again was told the restaurant doesn't open until 8 and that our reservation had been moved because we were the only 7:30 reservation. I have no issue with my reservation being changed if I would have been notified previously especially since the restaurant was adamant about getting our dinner order before our reservation and had no issue reaching out to me in that regard! When we asked for our deposit back the manager informed us that that was not possible and asked how fast we needed to be out of the dinner. The entire reason I booked a reservation at 7:30 was so that we could relax and enjoy a nice dinner and not be rushed! We again showed proof that we had a confirmed reservation and that the restaurant had actually been corresponding with us and never notified us that the reservation would be moved! Again the Manager informed us that the restaurant doesn't open until 8 and that we could not get a refund of our deposit! Obviously at this point we had no intention of waiting until 8 and the blatant disrespect that the manager had for our confirmed reservation was not going to make for an enjoyable dining experience! We informed the manager that we were canceling our reservation at which time I opened my open table app at around 7:30 and realized that the reservation said that we were currently dining which is a completely untrue! Unfortunately the restaurant and staff refused to honor our reservation and we were unable to find another suitable reservation in the City! read more

We came to Sonora Grill with an Anniversary Party, and they laid on the fun! First, I have to recommend the mixology menu - I got the Carribean Colada, with rum, pineapple, lemon and coconut juices, and it came in a half coconut shell with dry ice fog floating out of the shell. We tried nearly everything on the menu from huge steaks to tacos and octopus. Even the chips and queso were elevated. And of course, they brought out a series of desserts, one with a sparkling firework shooting out as the staff sang happy anniversary to our table. Was seated very quickly (around 9:30pm). It's a very loud environment, there was a DJ (just played whole songs though not like an actual party DJ), there's a lot of staff in black (with ear pieces, etc.) walking around but none of them helped or stopped (or made eye contact when I was trying to order/get my check). The chairs were pretty uncomfortable, the bench seats against the wall were better but still uncomfortable. The table had a big triangle structure on the base so there was no where to put your feet comfortably. The Monkey Fruit cocktail was delicious. The cappuccino was ok. I was going to order the ceviche but they didn't have it. They also didn't have any of the fish options available. There wasn't anything else on the menu that was very vegetarian friendly. I would think since it's an electronic menu they would remove the items they don't have available. I ordered the Mocka Cake. It's very interesting. A lot of different textures going on. Imagine then today for lunch how service sucked, starting with flat tonic for a cocktail, and brisket served without the sides I had the first time, and had to show pictures to from the first time I ate them to show the waiter what was missing. A bad experience entirely. The music is pumped up to club levels making even loud conversation impossible. The food I ordered was unpleasant. I had the Cesar Salad which in their take is a half head of lettuce with some bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese. It didn't seem to have any dressing and frankly was a lot of work to eat. My main was pasta short ribs. The pasta was overcooked and glue like while the meat was simply greasy. The whole mess was lukewarm. I would have addressed the food issues with the server if the server ever came around but after depositing the food, I didn't see him or anyone else again until the check came. Number one rule "Never offer" for sale if you have none to serve. My selection was a rib eye steak. Incomplete and unmanageable. Ordered medium. Expleained to waiter exactly my idea of medium...light rose colored center. FAIL. Medium here means RAW to the staff. Unfortunately it also means translation no flavor. My midevil attempts to stear the steer in one direction or another also failed when I added many different salsas. Asked for A1 and or wersteshire with blank stair. No sauce on hand. Also the Caesar salad was lacking authenticity nor flavor. Propina or tip is automatically inserted. Oh by the way your choice is 15 or 20 percent. Im sorry to say this gorgeous place will leave you lacking taste and will set your wallet empty. In reality it is in the lobby, but the giant windows open up to the Reforma and you feel like you are in a sidewalk cafe. First time I would recommend ordering a couple of pounds of ribeye to share.
