Our server Miguel was very friendly and since we had not been there before, he took a moment to explain the menu and told us what to try. When you go here (and you should go now) order the following: a margarita - delicious, tasted fresh and strong, chicken nachos ($7) to share, and try the tacos ($4.25 each) - go for pork, shrimp and beef tongue! The shrimp is tempura battered and so light and crispy, I have never had shrimp so tasty! They serve Brunch/lunch weekdays with sandwiches, tacos, pancakes, hashbrowns. By far one of my favorite taco joints in the Twin Cities. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. It's hard to tell that it's a Mexican restaurant from the name or the outside of the restaurant alone, but they have a large selection of street tacos and other popular Mexican dishes. I highly recommend the shrimp tempura taco and the chicken rojo taco. Although they are small, the tacos are filled with meat and toppings. Two tacos is generally enough, and three tacos leaves me feeling like I really overate. Guac is also great. I'm blanking on the names of the margaritas, but the "house" margarita is just ok. Definitely try the cucumber margarita or the Serrano pepper one if you don't mind spicy things. The restaurant itself has an awesome vibe. They also have a large outdoor patio on the side of the restaurant--definitely take advantage of sitting out there if the weather is nice! Also note that they have a parking lot in back and parking on the side streets as well. Lastly, Sonora has a a great happy hour with almost all of the tacos for about half price and discounts on margaritas/other drinks as well. In addition, they also have "taco Tuesdays" where the tacos are at happy hour prices all day. Pretty scummy management. I was fired on a busy Friday night (due to being spread thin, new to serving, customer complained, but that's beside the point...). They do mandatory tip pooling here (which is illegal) so I didn't know how many tips I was supposed to get and left getting nothing and management saying i'm not entitled to receiving tips. I had to fight for a week to be paid my final wages and tips from the last two weeks. After a week of super dramatic unnecessary texting back and forth, management finally threw me HALF of what I usually get tipped to appease me. I got all this bs about how I cost a small business money and that was her justification for why she gets to withhold my money. I would not recommend working here. read more

Vegetarians, this review is for you! As a former server at this restaurant, I'm still giving it 5 stars. That's how good it is. One of the owners (Alejandro Castillon) is the chef, and he takes the quality of food very seriously. Everything is from scratch, from the tortillas and chips to the salsas, entrees and desserts. Here are some of my favorite vegetarian dishes: 1) Elote. A corn dish may sound boring, but it's surprisingly delicious. Corn on the cob on a bed of coconut milk rice, covered with with chipotle salsa, chihuahua cheese, and cilantro--this was my go to order before my shift started. Cut the corn off the cob with a knife, mix it with the rice, then eat it as a salsa with the chips. 2) Eggplant and mushroom tacos. Both delicious. The mushroom taco is vegan. 3) Eggplant fries. Hot, filling, and flavorful. 4) Alma's guacamole. Another pre-shift staple. Get in my belly. 5) Quesadilla. They don't have a veggie option on the menu, but you can ask for it. Hot, filling, and fresh. 6) Paella. Same as the quesadilla, ask for a veggie-only version. This plate is meant to be shared, and it's a showstopper. 7) Green chilaquiles. Hands down, my brunch favorite. The first time I had it, I dreamed about Mexico. Covered in eggs, however you like them, jalapeños and chihuahua cheese. 8) Hash browns. Eggs how you like them, sautéed veggies, and chihuahua cheese. Since I've left, they have a new eggplant sandwich, which I haven't tried yet but will soon. They also recently added weekly specials, so ask your server if any of them are vegetarian. And don't forget the homemade flan for dessert. read more

My son cursed after his first bite, it was so good. I had the shrimp tempura taco and the mushroom taco. I can't decide which is better...they were both explosions of happiness in my mouth. So my guy said hey there is this awesome mexican place not far from here when I said I was craving mexican.... He was right. Very tasty skirt steak tacos. I also tried the tempura shrimp taco which was tasty but very heavily breaded. I would love to try a grilled shrimp taco. The roasted corn smothered with sauce on a bed of coconut rice was delish! Warning, unless you go during happy hour, it can get pretty expensive (cocktails are $10). Tacos are $5 to $6 each and sides are $5 to $10 each. We sat out on the patio. The metal chairs are pretty uncomfortable. We moved to the upper deck and it was way better. Service was good. It was pretty slow when we were there so I can't attest to how it would be at busy time. read more

Decided to try the Longfellow location after a rave from a food-savvy acquaintance. Menu is trendy pan-Latin fusion and what comes to your table is beautiful, if priced $2-$3 more than it deserves. Service was inattentive by pre-pandemic standards but given the ongoing staffing issues in the industry, we'll call it acceptable. The food, prices and service aren't what ruin the experience, though: it's the totally unacceptable noise levels in the dining space. Won't do this again. read more

I went to this place by chance, I was getting an oil change at a CarX two blocks away. Two months later, I've been back 7-8 times! Their breakfast burrito with chorizo is the stuff of legend. During the lunch rush it's a causal and relaxed atmosphere, the food is amazing, and the staff is very friendly. Very over-priced drinks with inattentive and questionable service. On a early and slow Friday afternoon, I ordered two of the $5 tacos. After waiting over 45 minutes, I asked if there was a problem. Eventually, I was told that they were coming. After another fifteen minutes, one of the managers brought them to me and said that they were comp'ed due to the delay. That was nice. However, when I got the bill, I saw that the (very non-generous pour) of a single shot of Don Julio Aneño tequila was $22. I asked about it, given that it was about twice as much as what I normally was charged (a bottle costs $42). The explanation was that more rare versions are even more expensive (DJA is not a rare tequila). I guess they made up for the comp. I'd love to be able to write an amazing review about the Sonora Grill but the truth is although everything on the menu looked amazing, we never got to try so much as a cocktail. We walked in and were seated pretty quickly and then forgotten about as quick as we were seated. There were two waitresses and plenty of extra staff around but we waited 15 minutes at least for someone to even take our drink order. Instead of taking our drink order, the waitress was chatting with other people at the bar who had already been served. So at that point we got up and left. I know people have bad days but this was straight up rude. I'm sure the food is awesome and we love to dine out but we may never know. We were hoping for a great new experience but it ended up leaving a bad taste in our mouth. read more

This place feels like a hidden gem because it's location is a little obscure. They are worth the trek. Boozy horchata and decked out Bloody Marys. The salsas are authentica, fresh, rich and savory. I'm consistently amazed by how good this place is! Super cute patio in the warmer months. They serve complimentary chips with a roasted red salsa. Drinks are very strong and some rotate out seasonally. The Obregon Margarita is absolutely amazing and was rated the best in Minneapolis a few years ago. Other great items are the Elote (generous serving), the Argentinian Empanadas and the Flautas Verdes. If you order all of the above, you've probably ordered the best items on the menu! "I'd come back here!... Will you Yelp this place?... Did I already ask that?" - all things my handsome manfriend said literally four times while we were at our first Sonora Grill expedition. Which, translated out of Terin-speak and into the common parlance, means this place is our new go-to. First of all, the host came RUNNING up to the door to greet us when we walked in, his face literally breaking into pieces with happiness that we were there. Dude. I'm yours. I will gladly spend too much money here. Here, just take my wallet. They get a second super mega bonus right off the bat because they have a solid set of options for folks who don't eat meat but do eat seafood. We had a hard time choosing, which was surprising and aaawwesoome. We landed on the shrimp taco, fish taco, and ceviche. All. Fantastic. My shrimp taco was made up of two HUGE portions of shrimp that had been battered with something airy and light (and slightly spicy) and set on a bed of thinly-shredded cabbage and a smear of some kind of delicious green sauce. And the ceviche was perfect- everything was diced finely and it was a perfect limey salsa, with cucumber and tomato and pure, good old-fashioned freshness. The only sadsad was that the strips of tortilla chips they served with it were really too thin to pick up much ceviche- which probably kept me from eating the whole platter in 2.5 seconds flat. Which may be the point. Also? My virgin margarita was DELICIOUS, and they took it seriously. They still put the salt on the rim and their pour was generous- which is a huge plus when most restaurants will take a "virgin" anything as an excuse to give you a sip of mixer and pocket your $4. Food is great, drinks are amazing! We came late on a friday after the rush and had some ceviche, guac, empanadas, coconut rice with squash, and a few other things. Everything was fantastic, we tried a couple of the drinks - and those were all quite outstanding! I need to come back and come very hungry as I want to eat everything! They have braised kale - which looked amazing but we were too full to try anything else. The space is also pretty nice, open - they do communal type seating here - which if you hate people - then probably not your cup of tea, but kinda fun to dine with strangers - and you can engage them or just hang out with your crew if you want. Always depends on who you get! We had great service, and I'm sure any issues those below had will be worked out in time - supposed to wait a month or two to review (if you are a professional) so that the place can work out it's kinks. I ate here twice in three days, in case that sums it up for you. If you need more words, see below. First, the Obregon Margarita. Best in show. It won an award from City Pages this year and from my belly last month. Next, the service. Super friendly and nice people everywhere you turn. Good job, guys. And finally, the food. Though their concept jumps around a HUGE chunk of the world (Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Spain, etc.), it comes together seamlessly. The paella is a hit. Probably the best I've had in Minneapolis, full of seafood, chicken and chorizo. My only gripe is this: it doesn't have the tasty crust on the bottom. It's called la soccarat and it's non-negotiable with paella. I actually heated up my leftovers the next day in a nonstick pan to make the soccarat myself and holy buckets. If they achieved that umami-crustiness, this dish would be unstoppable. As is, it's still totally worth ordering so don't let my gripe dissuade you AT ALL. Just saying, it's a ten that could be an eleven. Two days later at lunch, I got a couple of tacos because I wasn't too hungry. I already knew the tacos and bocadillos were going to be great after devouring them (lots of them) at the Midtown Global Market location, and they didn't disappoint. One was beef tongue, which is always one of my favorite taco meats. I don't even remember the other one -- not because it wasn't memorable, but because all of them are delicious and it doesn't matter. A little pricey for tacos, but the quality and the made-from-scratchness is all there to back it up. In conclusion, go to this place and eat/drink something, anything. It'll be wonderful. read more

On a lazy Saturday afternoon, we set out on a journey for something to fill our chips & guacamole void. I recently drove past Sonora and double-checked Yelp before enjoying one of the better lunches. I have never been to the MTGM location, but will definitely have to check it out after such a great lunch! In short, if you are feeling high quality Latin American/Spanish cuisine, Sonora is a safe bet. We arrived at around 2PM and were seated immediately. There was one waitress/hostess working the entire restaurant, which was pretty busy, but she still did a speedy job of taking care of us. Also, Sonora's "bus boys" are honestly some of the happiest, well mannered restaurant folks I have run across in the Twin Cities! When seated, they immediately brought out hand cut tortilla chips and an excellent sauce. Additionally, we ordered the chips & guac, and it was absolutely wonderful! So light and refreshing I had a brief out of body experience back to the beaches of Cancun...sigh. Now is a good time to point out that EVERYTHING is made from scratch...and it shows (in a good way)! For an entree, I ordered 3 tacos: steak, chicken, and pork. I would only suggest ordering 3 + an app if you are starving! 2 tacos would have sufficed. I must say these were some of the better tacos I have ever had, and probably the best I have had in the Twin Cities. If I was forced to order one go for the chicken! Light, extremely flavorful, and perfect tortillas.To top it all off the pricing was extremely reasonable. Three tacos+chips & guac=~$15. Not bad at all! I feel the only mediocre item of note was the restaurant itself. They did a nice job renovating a lackluster building, but the old cafeteria style floor and seating arrangement made it feel somewhat like a Perkins/Denny's with a bar in the middle. I wanted to love it, honestly I did. Not sure why the reviews rave though, so here is my take... Nuts and bolts: poor service as they are not staffed adequately, my server was almost mute when I asked her what she recommended on the menu, we had dirty plates on the edge of the table to be picked up for 20 minutes, all of our plates came out at different times, it took 10 minutes for me to get a new drink when I brought mine to the bar as it tasted very odd and diluted. This place is way too loud, with both the music and the crowd. Mind you, I love to jam with the best of them, but yelling about my day to my table mates just didn't feel relaxing. The tacos where OK, but sadly you can get better ones after a 2 minute wait and save yourself $16 if you swing by the taco taxi truck on Lake and 20th. None of the food "fit" together. You would think Mexican influence right? Mmmmmm, no. So some of the things that hit our table were puzzling, like the Hermosillo roll and the shrimp wrapped in pancetta. We expected a Latin twist, but it wasn't to be. The empanadas were filled with mealy ground pork, the texture mostly killing the dish. So sorry Sonora, I tried. read more

I lived in south Minneapolis for 15 years and was super excited when this placed opened, though my first encounter here was New Years. Despite my better judgment I went in for brunch with some friends (half expecting the place to be empty at 10am). The place was slammed and with only three servers on the floor (one also working behind the bar) and three cooks we expected our seating to take over an hour!! That hour was cut in half as our server frantically cleared a 6 top for us and took our drink order. Not once did she complain or seem annoyed or overwhelmed at the chaos and apologized frequently for the slowness of the service. I can't imagine how many ass holes this woman must have encountered that morning for her to feel obligated to apologize. It was New Years brunch...of course it was busy! We waited patiently for our food which arrived 40 minutes later...and to our delight everything was hot and immaculate. Presentation, taste, authenticity and price point were all perfect. My bloody was even on the house because she forgot to bring it to me with my coffee! An awesome experience, I even purchased a year long coupon so I can comeback when I'm in the neighborhood. Five stars for a number of reasons. First, congratulations to the owners who took a risk and moved into this address that has been the death knell for E Lake Street restaurants for over 25 years. The design is terrific. Second, (and really first) the food was top notch. Our server didn't really have a grip on the menu items, but I'm not sure that matters for a restaurant where everything is likely very good. I had the Cured Salmon Salad which was a small portion of salmon lox under a bed of greens with the dressing smeared on the plate in the utmost appealing way. As I worked my way through this experience, I discovered small slices of dates near the bottom which was the perfect sweet balance with the salmon and greens. It was so original and so good. Finally, on a Wednesday night, the parking lot was full and the dining experience fully explained the reason. Thank you owners for reviving this property. read more

I've been to Sonora 5+ times since they've opened in Longfellow, at various times of day including brunch. For me this is one of those places where the description sounds so much better than the food that's delivered. Best so far is hands down the ceviche. It was fresh and flavorful. Big chunks of fish, shrimp and avocado with the perfect lime zip. I would have licked the bowl if no one would have judged. Both the nachos and the chilaquiles at brunch were a let down. Soggy and not flavorful or inspired at all. The drinks are usually good, though. I'm a BIG fan of tequila and they have some fun choices. The one thing to avoid is the mimosa at brunch - just a flute of cheap oj and no bubbles at all. Like it, don't love it. Will probably be back someday. read more

I grew up on California Mexican food so I go in absolutely not expecting the Mexican food I grew up on. So with that in mind, I think Sonora Grill is a perfectly good fusion place. The flavors can be very delicious, everything is always perfectly cooked. I want to give it five stars. But there is always one added ingredient or seasoning that has me scratching my head on the menu items I've tried. Today I ordered the Cachoreada. The flavors wonderful. It has tons of seafood. It comes looking like a giant block of ceviche surrounded by a pool of salsa negra(soy sauce?)..... It tasted good with the food but a drizzle would have been perfectly fine... or even say a quarter cup. My cachoreada tasted so very good but the literal bowl of soy sauce flavored salsa negra almost killed it towards the end. It just over powered everything. read more

First impression when I arrived, this place was clean and the modern rustic deco was inviting. We had lunch over the counter at the bar. Service was friendly and attentive. Their steak and tongue tacos were delicious. They have good margaritas. However, I was not too keen of their house mix Bloody Mary. The spiciness was nice but somehow it lacked the salt I like in my drink. Not a good reason not to go back because everything else that my friends ordered were delicious. We wanted go here for quite some time and finally it happened . It was not too crowded for a Friday night. Interior was ok and neat. They have cool bar at the center.complimentry chips were good. They have some unique beer and some unique cocktail options as well. We ordered fried egg plants , peppers , corn , fish tempura and chicken vedra.. Egg plant and corn stood out. Fish was ok and the sauce that came with peppers was sour for my taste. For the entrees we ordered beans/rice , shrip cheviche , Hermosillo roll and paella.. Hermosillo was little dry for me should have had sone sauce on it. Paella was probably thier best dish.. the rice was perfectly cooked and mixed with seafood & other meats.. it was extremely flavourful.. overall good place to have a drink and some unique Mexican food & flavours.. read more

I love Taco Tuesday, it's so pure. Taco Tuesday doesn't judge, it understands that sometimes you say embarrassing things to your boss or mess up a really important report. At the end of a long day Taco Tuesday hands you a margarita and says "here, eat all the tacos and remember that tomorrow is Wednesday and you're half way to the weekend!" Sonora is GREAT, it's the perfect place for Taco Tuesday. Out of the 10+ times I've been there I've always had wonderful service and quality food. The Rojo, Verde, and shrimp tacos are amazing and have enough filling on them to make 2 tacos. On my most recent visit I tried the fried khinkali and oh my god it's so good. I don't even know what it is, but you should get it! Also the cucumber margarita is fresh as hell. It's the best marg I've ever had, hands down. The only thing I would change would be to add a fried chicken taco to the menu. Fried chicken tacos are the only reason I got to the lesser, Bar Luchador. read more

Our waiter was very vague when asked to describe the special and to explain the menu offerings. Who doesn't have enough cups to serve a breakfast crowd if you offer breakfast? We ordered a variety of things off the menu, and I watched my breakfast burrito sit on the counter for 15 minutes while the other two mains got prepared. Server was super overworked - not her fault, but inattentive service, an ice cold burrito, and an inability to fill a drink order won't have us coming back. Two large groups seated after us got their food before us. Food took 40 minutes to come, eggs and beans don't take that long. Food was good and savory. Coffee was awful. Burnt Bunn drip makers.
