Okay...so...Mestiizo is amazing - like it IS something to call home about. I went in thinking it was going to be super expensive with small portions and that was not the case. Instead, I was blown away by the Birria Egg roll and Pork Belly Tacos. The flavors are to die for and I can see myself going back to order these over and over again. We also tried the Carne Asada which was melt in your mouth good. Mestiizo really is the cutest place with a cozy, elevated interior, good vibes, and great food. I wasn't a super fan of the desserts, but the coconut ice cream lives in my head rent free and I'm starting to think I made a huge mistake by not trying the cocktails. Service was amazing and fast. This is a review based on one visit with four people, all well traveled and with fairly broad fine dining experience, for what that's worth. We went early and not on a weekend, so it was very quiet. We were given absolutely exceptional service. Was that as a result of being almost the only people there? Cannot say with any certainty, but I suspect actually their servers are just quite good. That's a scenario where it's very easy to be over-waited upon. That's not what happened. The staff were attentive but not intrusive. Also, they never once used that annoying inclusion into the party language such as, "And what would we like to have today?" or the pointless, "My favorites are..." that skip the more appropriate question of, "What sorts of flavors do you like?", before making recommendations. I think they did a nice job on decoration of the space. I do suspect when it's busy, it may be quite loud, given how open it is with high ceilings and not a lot to absorb noise. As to the food, portion sizes are good. Neither skimpy nor excessive. Everything was very well prepared, flavorful, fresh. and well presented. They provided a variety of condiments to the table to allow us to individually adjust heat level, when requested. Each dish did come with its own specific condiment, which were well chosen, which meant that the requested condiments were largely ignored. They were able to accommodate a couple of different dietary restrictions in our group without any trouble (one vegan, one food allergy.) They are definitely on the return list for dining. BIRRIA EGGROLLS- a must order. The avocado moose was amazing...would have liked a little more. COCHINITA TACO-was fine. More citrusy than the expected. NUEVE ROLL-great sushi-must order. Desert was fine--not something we talk about after leaving. The kitchen is Gluten Free and that was our main reason for visiting, but we'll be back. I came here with a friend for her birthday since she wanted to try this spot and we had overall a good experience with the vibe, the drinks, and the dessert, but we both thought that the food taste could use improvement, especially when the portion size was so small for the amount of food that was given. The birria eggroll had an appropriate amount of ponzu-consomé which served as a very good sauce for the birria meat. The eggrolls were tasty and offered a great culinary experience. The beet salad had a good amount of beet pieces which was great, and the peanuts along with the jicama on the top offered very good ingredients to go along with the beet pieces. Eating them altogether was great. My friend and I also enjoyed the dessert because it had a mixture of various types of textures from the hard cookie-like bottom to the creamy milky mixture on the top. My friend commented that the meat on the tacos were pretty dry, which per her was disappointing. I tasted the shrimp tempura as well and thought that it was a bit soggy. I also thought the sushi had pretty good salmon on the top, but the overall taste was relatively conventional and had no highlights. Maybe using another sauce at the bottom of the sushi roll can help provide more flavor options if customers choose to dip their rolls into them. In terms of the bibimbap, I thought that the gochujang was way too sweet which overpowered the taste of the entire bowl, probably because it was an agave gochujang per the menu, which I would argue wasn't needed because Korean gochujang has enough sweetness to define the flavor and does not need more. Despite my feedback above, I still appreciated the fusion concept that this restaurant offered, and would still recommend it to people. I don't think I have seen a lot of Mexican and Asian fusion food, so the novelty itself allowed me to be curious enough to enjoy my experience. read more

This gluten-free girl was in heaven! Everything here is gluten-free and amazing! I have no idea the last time I had shrimp tempura, but, I love the one they had here! Do not sleep on the beet salad! It was an 11/10! The cocktails were great but actually loved the mocktails! We all got tacos and sushi to share. What I really enjoyed was that I could have tempura, I haven't had that in so long! And it was done so well. The space itself is pretty small and worked well for our table of three. I loved all of their fusion food, almost everything on the menu is a little bit of Japanese in Mexican. Let's start with the good: the sushi was good, fresh, and definitely the standout of the night. But everything else wasn't worth the price. The flavors weren't there. Had dinner with a small group of friends and decided to share a bunch of items as the entire menu looked so good! We had the chai thai, Paloma, chasing you, and the marg. It is a very cocktail focused bar and you can tell by how unique and crafty their specialty cocktails are. We all really enjoyed our drinks. Service was quick for how specialty the cocktails and food are! Our server was warm and bubbly. For food, we shared the eggrolls and two of the rolls (minimoto and mexikhana) and we each got a taco. Make reservations, and specify you want a booth or you will get the world's tiniest table. I don't understand the need to turn the lights off at 4 pm in winter. Clearly if people are eating at that time of day, they don't want to feel like they're eating in a coal mine by the light of a dodgy candle. For starters we had the chips & salsa and elote. The chips were phenomenal and the mid & spicy salsas had wonderful flavors. The elote was okay, just short on salt (and I would have liked a hint of lime). For mains we had the lengua, shrimp, chicken, and pork belly tacos, the Mexikana roll, and the octopus. The lengua and chicken tacos were meh. The shrimp and pork belly tacos were out of this world!!!! That's all we would order next time for mains. Regarding the lengua taco and the octopus, the meat was cold; very off-putting and if that's the way the chef meant it to be it would be best to indicate that on the menu or have the server warn you so it's not a disappointment to others like it was for us. For drinks, the Midday Field was a delight to the tastebuds and should never leave the menu. They also offered an in-house vermouth shot that was noteworthy and hopefully they will keep offering. I really loved my drinks my favorite was the Ruby Rhapsody, a sangria with so much depth. The mix of red wine, gin, mezcal, blackberry, blood orange, and mole was incredibly flavorful, beautifully balanced, and honestly so cute. Super creative and memorable. For food, I tried the Birria Eggroll (beef, carrots, scallions, avocado mousse, ponzu-consomé). The flavors were good, but the consomé could've used a little more seasoning I'd rate it a 6.9/10. The Tuna Tostada was yummy and fresh with avocado, salsa macha, cilantro, cucumber, radish, and sesame. I also loved the Mexikana Roll snow crab, panela cheese, roasted poblano, spicy aioli, tostada crunch, and microgreen radish so flavorful with great texture. The Neuve Roll was another hit with salmon, shrimp tempura, chili-garlic aioli, cucumber, avocado, and red tobiko. The service was amazing our Server Jared was a rockstar! and the ambience was lively yet moody at the same time, which made the whole experience feel elevated and fun. I believe Mestiizo is a newer restaurant. It's marketed as a drinks hotspot and a place for infusion. And an infusion it is. Looking around the restaurant you'll see a lot of Asian decor and then one of the first things you see on the menu is tacos and chips and salad. We started with chips and salsa and found we needed to order a second basket of chips. I ordered a pork belly taco. I didn't love it. The pork belly was extra chewy. I wouldn't order it again. I did love the orange cilantro flavor. I also ordered a Nashi Roll. It was a delicious salmon roll with asian pear. I'd order this roll again for sure. For dessert we ordered a version of ube bunelos with gelato. Very unique flavors that somehow all work together. I'm participating in dry-January (no alcohol), so I opted for a zero proof cocktail. The Akai Chi was very delicious, but it felt a little crazy to pay only one dollar less for a non-alcoholic drink vs an alcoholic drink. Our server was busy, but did his best checking in on us and answering all of our questions about the menu. Some other things to be aware of is the restaurant is dark for dinner. They are going for the moody lighting. It's also pretty loud, making dinner conversation a little difficult for people across the table. We had a both/table with three of us and we filled the table. Awesome Asian Latin fusion restaurant in NE. Food was excellent and so was the service. I'm always looking to increase my sushi options and this is going on the list. Started with some chips and salsa. Three very different salsas that each had a unique flavor profile, from creamy to hint of fruit to spicy and smoky. I enjoyed the shrimp tempura taco and the Nueve roll. The taco packed so much flavor and was not dry as I've experienced at other spots. The Mexican kimchi on it worked. The sushi roll was on point, well crafted and super good. I started to order the Suadero taco but the waitress let me know the brisket is actually marinated or cooked in pork juice. I was glad she asked about dietary restrictions and disclosed that info! The signature cocktails are unique and fun and delicious. There's also a solid classic cocktail menu. The place is small but very nice inside. Love the red lit bar and decor. I'll be back to try other awesome sounding dishes. Make a reservation. The place was packed and seems to stay busy. Arriving as a walk in at 5:30pm still was questionable for our chances of being seated for more than an hour. That surprised me but ultimately we were fine. Mestiizo was a nice experience. It is Mexican and Asian inspired fusion so the vibes and menu were pretty unique. From having agave plants displayed right above a katana to having cheese in a sushi roll(it was yummy), I think they did a good job of capturing the fusion without feeling too gimmicky. The food itself was delicious, we got the Mexikana roll and 3 of the various tacos they have on the menu. All the food was delicious but the tacos in particular were my favorite. I like that they really tried to blend the menu and not have regular sushi and regular tacos but for instance the roll we got had poblano and cheese, which brought in the Mexican elements to a sushi roll that I found quite fun. The staff was friendly although with the crowded seating and narrow walk ways it can feel a little hectic in there. Overall I enjoyed Mestiizo and would be a great date spot! read more

I usually don't like fusion restaurants - many don't get either cuisine right. But Mestiizo was an exception. Great drink menu (although more Mexican inspired). Nice attention to detail with groove in a clear ice cube to hold the orange peel in my Negroni. We got elotes (all Mexican), nueve roll (all Japanese), and the short rib (both). All were excellent, and the enoki mushroom side in the short roll was an umami bomb! Will be back. read more
