Chula's is a pretty good Mexican spot. If you don't want to read my full review, here's the short version: I recommend giving it a try at least once. We left wanting to come back, but not everything was perfect. First, the atmosphere is fantastic. The restaurant is very clean, modern, and relaxing. They seem to be aiming for a more upscale dining experience, and some of the menu prices definitely reflect that. I was also surprised by how busy it was. We stopped in on a Monday around 12:30 PM for lunch while I was on PTO, and the place was packed. The crowd was mostly older adults, likely retirees or people wealthy enough that they don't need to work on a Monday afternoon. There was also a mix of people on lunch breaks and a few families with kids. Service was a little slow, likely because of how busy they were, but everyone we interacted with was friendly and welcoming. My wife ordered the $16 Pink Señorita. I'll admit it was very good, but I'm not sure it was $16 good. The glass was fairly large, though, which helped justify the price a bit. One disappointment was that there are no complimentary chips and salsa. If you want chips, you have to order them. We decided to try the Chips Trio, and overall, it was very good. The chips themselves were excellent, although some were oversalted while others needed a little more seasoning. The guacamole was unlike any I've had before. It was extremely chunky and very lime-forward, but both worked.....surprisingly, well. It ended up being some of the best guacamole I've had in a long time. Just be prepared that it's very chunky and LIME. The queso was good too. It's hard to mess up queso, and while it wasn't anything extraordinary, it was tasty. The pico de gallo was also excellent, though I wish it had been mixed better. One scoop was loaded with jalapeños and extremely spicy, while the next barely had any. Not a huge issue, but it could have been more consistent. My biggest complaint with the Chips Trio was portion size. For the price, I expected either more chips or significantly more dip. My wife and I finished the entire thing ourselves, so if you have more than two or three hungry people at your table, you may want to order two. There simply isn't enough queso, guacamole, or pico to go around. We also ordered the pork pepper appetizer. It was enjoyable for the first few bites, but after that, I found myself losing interest. It wasn't bad by any means, but it wasn't something that made me want to keep going back for more. We ended up taking us home for leftovers and I'm excited to be able to reheat it for a few bites. For my entrée, I ordered the Sonoras for $11. This thing was fantastic and something I would absolutely order again. I've never had anything quite like it. My only complaint is the size. For $11, I was expecting a much larger hot dog. It was basically standard hot dog size with lots of toppings. Delicious, but I wish it had been bigger. My wife ordered two tacos. I tried her Chicken Tinga taco, and honestly, it was probably the weakest thing we had. The chicken was a little dry, and the flavor didn't compare favorably to other tinga tacos I've had. That said, my wife enjoyed both of her tacos, so your mileage may vary. We were both impressed with how much meat was packed into each one. The bigger issue was the price. The tacos are about $7 each (don't forget tax and tip!), and that's all you get. No chips, no side, no salsa, nothing. $7 for a single taco feels a little steep. Speaking of pricing, Chula's definitely offers some higher end menu options. Interestingly, the online menu doesn't list prices. If you want to see what things actually cost, you need to go into the online ordering section. Maybe that's strategic, maybe not, but we all know restaurants aren't exactly hiding the cheaper items (Management, we know what you're doing. Just put the prices on there *wink*). There were a few dishes that caught our attention, including the lobster and some of the $75 entrées. Those might be worth trying on a future visit. Maybe we split one, or I take out a small 2nd mortgage. After tip, our total came to about ~$86. That's certainly not cheap, but it also wasn't outrageous considering we ordered an alcoholic drink, the Chips Trio, the pork pepper appetizer, and entrées. The highlights were the atmosphere, chips, pico de gallo, guacamole, and Sonora Dog. The low points were the pricing, the tinga taco, and the lack of complimentary chips and salsa. Also slow service but yeah, I get it. It's busy. Overall, I'm giving Chula's 4 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed the experience, and I will likely be back. But I'm not rushing there anytime soon.

5 stars for the decor.... And the service on night 2 was all smiles and inviting. We are going to trust they will get some of the hiccups corrected and give them some grace for their opening weekend. The great: my wife's margarita flight! The bar is working well and pretty much every table had a marg flight. Deliciosa! Lots of runners up and down their steps (whew!) and all the staff were smiling and welcoming. My street tacos were very tasty - lived the shrimp and the Barbacoa, while the Al pastor didn't measure up to my faves from Playa, but was still tasty. Tip: I wish I had a side of salsa, as I think it would have added to them. The hiccups: Remember - this is night 2, so let's be patient. Kitchen isn't keeping up with the rest of the house. Two hours from seating to paying the bill. We wanted chips and 3 dippings... but they said they had run out of queso?? Heard another table was told they didn't have their "Chula Wings" (which sound delish). Our reservation was before 5pm on night 2, so that's some challenged inventory planning out of the gate. Note - They were indeed FULL - lots of demand for Chulas. And our server got my order wrong - I ordered the Bocadillo sandwich and two street tacos. She either ordered me a barbacoa taco instead or the kitchen missed it. She didn't offer to correct once it came out and knowing the kitchen delay, I didn't push it. While I didn't get my ordered as originally requested - given the back up, it didn't make sense - it all was tasty, even the barbacoa taco. Note - My wife loved her steak salad. Ultimately, while we were there for two hours, I'm not taking it off the 5 rating as we will give them some grace - it's opening weekend. Did I mention the decor? It's amazing. (Thought bubble: Those poor servers running the steps!)

I stopped in on a Wednesday evening after leaving The Wilds and grabbed a seat at the bar. The bartender was friendly and accommodating throughout my visit. I ordered the pork tamale, shrimp taco, and the Fandango cocktail. The food was decent, and the Fandango...recommended by both the bartender and another customer, was especially refreshing. They also have a small patio out front for outdoor dining.

Jordan was very attentive and took good care of us. Drinks we AWESOME, food came out quickly and was tasty, fresh and hot!! Portions were sharable and easy to eat. Atmosphere was like being on vacation, it downtown Mpls! Recommend Chula's highly, with a reservation or there will be a wait.

Sonoras dog, just like you get from an authentic street vendor, really good!

Excellent food, great options on the menu & good prices. Our server, Melissa, was very friendly & helpful. Beautiful restaurant overall. Need to go back soon to try more items on the menu. Great experience!

Beef Street taco and chicken Tinga street taco

Absolutely amazing. We had lunch there on Memorial Day, four days after they officially opened. The atmosphere is beautiful and it was a laid-back lunch crowd. We sat out on the patio. The waiter was attentive and answered all of our questions. We had the margarita flight and the chips and salsa with guac and queso delicious. For entrées, we had a veggie taco, a chicken taco, and a beef taco delicious. We would've liked to have tried more, but her stomachs would not allow it. I guess we'll have to come back! The only suggestions I would have is to add salt to all of the margaritas and perhaps an option to have sour cream for the tacos. For opening weekend things seem to be running very smoothly and we're already planning our next trip back! We are going to be frequent diners at Chula's. So excited to have this restaurant in Prior Lake! Great job Chula's and staff!

Such a beautiful restaurant! I loved all the greenery! The margarita flight was a so delicious and a great way to sample different flavors. I ordered the lobster mofongo and was in heaven! The lobster and its sauce were absolutely delicious. I'll definitely be back to explore more of the menu!

I imagine it would be really nice in the spring/summer as there is a horse track right outside of the restaurant which would provide a great view to a race. It definitely got a little loud just sitting inside They had a large variety of options to choose from on the menu. They also offered a great and surprisingly extensive Happy Hour Menu which we got there in time to take advantage of.  We got the burger and thought it was very tasty, we love a good caramelized onion. I thought it definitely needed some ketchup to balance out the heaviness of the onions and cheese with a little bright acidity. I also thought the patties themselves were very good, thin with a slight crisp to them with a soft bun and melty sauces and cheese. Since it was a happy hour option the burger did not come with any sides like it would have as an entrée. We also got fish tacos and we were a big fan of the slaw and pineapple mayo which brought a balance of sweet and savory to the dish. Only came with two tacos (at least for happy hour) which might not be enough food if you're hungry. The hot smoked salmon was one of the more unique items we tried. The salmon itself was super tasty - salty and smoky just what you want. They use the smaller scraps of salmon that wouldn't work in their Wood-Fired King Salmon entrée and incorporate it into this appetizer which is great sustainability-wise! The salmon came with a creamy ricotta, salty capers, crunchy crostini, and sweet and acidic pickled red onions. We liked this combination a lot but felt it could have used even more sweetness/acidity, maybe just adding a couple more onions to the dish. We really enjoyed the 'Garganelli' pasta dish. It was creamy and indulgent with pieces of lobster and freshly shaved parmesan on top. The chili added a really nice layer of heat but wasn't overpowering. The server was nice enough to split up everything we had over the evening to share (which explains the two small portions in the photo). MN Mule - 8/10 Pretty average but solid mule. However, it was served in a plastic spam cup which elevated the whole experience. Margarita - 9/10 Very good margarita - we were told it was a house made margarita not from a mix. Very bright and fresh flavors that definitely let the tequila shine. Overall would definitely recommend!

This is something that we get many places because it's my husband's favorite and we both agreed this was our favorite coconut shrimp so far in the Twin Cities. I got the Asian slaw salad with Aji tuna. I've had this before, it is so good especially the shoyu dressing. It sounds boring to come here and get a salad, but it's just delicious especially with the crunchy macadamia nuts. My husband got the loco Moco with short rib and loved it. We got fries on the side. This place is located in Shakopee and is next to Canterbury Downs (horse race track) and an amphitheater. It shares a smaller lot with other businesses, so parking can be a bit tricky. We were greeted by a friendly host and she immediately sat us. The waitress/bartender came over right away with water and asked if we wanted anything else. We said we would take a look at the menu. The drink menu however was blank... like nothing inside. When we alerted the waitress she laughed and said "oh well that's not great." But didn't do anything to fix it. We originally said we were going to stick with water but the water was gross! So we ordered sodas instead. The decor here is cute and it appeared to be clean/well taken care of. There are a lot of seating options between booth, high top and low top as well. They also have a fair amount of big screens and pull tabs. This place also smelled amazing but the food just did not capture that. We started with the smoked wings and got the sauces on the side. My boyfriend really liked them. I felt they were just ok. They were moist and a decent sized wing, but lacking any real smoke flavor. The garlic parm sauce was our fav and the ranch here is solid. We got the little pig. Another person noted "bland" and unfortunately we agree. There was absolutely no flavor the any of the meats! This place has the word "smokery" in it, and yet no smokiness at all. The other strange part was the texture. The pork and ribs were both mushy... my boyfriend said it was giving, "reheated" vibes. I don't know if that's true, but I've never had meat have a texture like that. The brisket in my opinion was actually decent. Though I wish it had more flavor, the texture was pretty good. The corn bread muffins were excellent and the sweet potato fries were also good. This place relies heavily on you putting lots of sauce on the meat, that's where the flavor comes in. I didn't care for the sauces very much either though. Unfortunately this was a let down. When you spend over $100 for food, you are expecting a quality experience. We will not be back.
