They were busy the day we arrived and although they were short staffed and took longer to get our orders, they did communicate about the wait time. My food was delicious, probably the best chicken flautas I've ever had and I enjoyed my chips and salsa and tres leeches cake. It almost tastes like flavor fusion on some classics. I've been coming here for over 7 years,and the last few months have been quite the change. Food was good but I went in this Friday and the 2 people working had zero personality. I got a hello,and that was it the entire time, never checked back on how the food was,one of the girls rolled her eyes when I asked for a Togo box,and when I payed she just gave me my check and walked away,no thank you,no have a good day,nothing! I won't be coming back when there's plenty of places that have people that are happy to be there,but being the only person at the entire back it shouldn't be hard to give even a half assed attempt at service. read more

I visited Sonora Grill yesterday for happy hour after work. This was my first time coming here so I did not know what to expect. I recently just visited a Mexican restaurant so I was expecting something similar. The basics such as parking and getting a seat were great. They have a parking lot and it was pretty dead so seating was easy. Their happy hour menu isn't bad but unfortunately I didn't enjoy their food. Caramelos (which are their tacos) were about 3.50 each and I tried the roasted mushroom and tilapia. The taste was pretty bland. I tried my coworkers French fries and those were actually really good! Also apart of the happy hour menu were fried eggplants which were pretty much like French fries. You get this nummy sauce with it too. Overall, service and everything else was great! it's possible your taste buds would enjoy this place but mine didn't! read more

I'm changing my reading based on yesterday normally I always give this restaurant five stars because I like it a lot yesterday the waiter wouldn't have to cook make my eggs the way I wanted him because he said I could get salmonella the eggs were way over cooked and it ruined the dish I wanted soft eggs those were good but medium hard yolks were not runny the whites were way overcooked and I was very disappointed it'll probably be a long time before I go back however that's my only bad experience there I'm so disappointed to feel this way because Home really am thinking of not going back so lovely restaurant though if you're going for tacos go for it if you're going for eggs and you like the eggs to be running good luck The staff has always been friendly waiter yesterday wasn't unfriendly just not incredibly helpful It was early so they weren't busy every other time I'm gone that way there has brought me good eggs yesterday no go yesterday I had to set them off to the side because they were so grossly over cooked read more

We had a wonderful dinner. The inside seating can be noisy, but don't fret if your one to like it a little more tranquil they have a wonderful outdoor patio and seating area. The food was phenomenal and the service was great given how busy they were. Would highly recommend stopping in to this wonderful restaurant. read more

I would have to say... if you are craving FRESH food, with great flavor, this is your spot! I had the shrimp tacos and the ensalada (salad special of the day), both were exceptionally tasty and I'd order again. Friends got the empanadas, which had a flavorful flaky crust and was sitting upon a creamy cloud of goodness! We also shared the egg plant fries which came with a fabulous aioli. The atmosphere was relaxed and family style. The server was attentive and really helped us choose great meals! The drinks... well if you like spicy... go for the jalapeño margarita! I'm finding myself drawn back again and again to Sonora Grill. I've been three times now and have found everything to be pretty dang good. While it's typically busy, I haven't had to wait long for seating, even on short notice. Staff is always friendly and awesome, too. Crispy fresh tortilla chips accompany flavorful and spicy salsa. Margaritas temper the salty with sweet and boozy. MY favorite is the spicy jalapeño margarita. It's got a kick, but the heat is tolerable. The empanadas are tasty and apparently their signature dish, though not always super filling. Tacos are huge and come with tons of meat. The stack of shrimp piled on the shrimp taco is impressive and well-seasoned. I recently went while on the Whole30 diet and found a couple doable options. There's a jicama salad or cerviche served on a bed of avocados. The latter was my first choice, but they had no ripe avocados. I ended up going for the flank steak. It was cooked medium rare and was succulent with a nice char on the outside. The price may have been a little steep, but it was satisfying and came with a little chipotle-seasoned grilled cauliflower. I really can't be happier with the service or quality of the food. If the prices weren't quite so high, I might go more often since it's just down the street from me, but I understand a local business has to make a buck. read more

The shrimp tempura taco, sangria, and empanadas were delicious. The red sangria was easily the best I've ever had. It's also easy to see why the Shrimp Tempura Tacos are what everyone talks about. The perfect balance of cool and crunchy and spicy. The nachos are a large plate but worth it. The Sonora Margarita is fine but a bit overpriced on the dinner menu. Didn't care for the chipotle salsa. We had excellent service on our visit with our server bringing out our drinks promptly and even getting us an extra flan from the kitchen. Not for people who are expecting a standard Mexican restaurant. Good food, but fewer options than your standard (stereotypical) Mexican place. I'm not saying I don't recommend the place, but you should be prepared for that. read more

Sonora is just such a fun place to go on a nice day. They have an adorable patio outside. Their drinks and food are super yummy. Felt like I was on vacation. I have to call attention to the Happy Hour menu. Most places knock 25 cents off items during happy hour, but Sonora legit discounts tacos and drinks 25-40%. Now that's an incentive. My favorites for food: - Sonoran Hot Dog. Dog, pico, guac, chorizo, and a spicy chili sauce. This taste explosion is served in the hottest pillow bun too :) - Shrimp taco. First off, their tacos are huge, and wrapped in 2 tortillas. I literally create 2 separate tacos with 1 order. The shrimp taco is a fried buffalo spiced masterpiece. Here are the pluses or the perfectly fine things: Service was fine. The food was fine. I really likes the spicy Margarita that I had. What I didn't like was that the floor was littered with the food of previous patrons. Being that it was a dark floor all the food was very visible. The music was very loud which led to everyone in the place having to speak extra loud which meant I could not talk to my dinner companion with easy or even small effort. Finally got a date night with my wife and we were recommended Sonora Grill by a friend, and it was no disappointment. We were seated outside so we really didn't get a look at the decor inside. Outdoor seating is fun and dog friendly. We started out with a couple of drinks. I got the chaquita banana. Not overpowering with banana flavoring. My wife got the mango margarita. It was sweet and spicy. We started out with the nachos with the chicken rojo. Wow! Flavors were amazing but those chips make it! Full size chips with a Big crunch! We also had the Argentinian pork empanadas. The dough was light and crispy and held up to being cut with a knife without falling apart. The filling was seasoned perfectly! The poblano crema and cotija cheese complimented it all. I could have ate that crema on everything. We tried the fish, pork pastor, pork carnitas, chicken rojo, shrimp tempura, beef skirt steak, and brisket tacos. One of our favorites was the fish taco. Large pieces of mahi mahi with a great beer batter coating. The mango cucumber salsa with the habanero aioli made it amazing! Another favorite was the shrimp tempura. Large pieces of shrimp fried to perfection complimented with an amazing cilantro aioli. The last of our favorites was the pork pastor. Large portion of well seasoned pork but the highlight was the pineapple salsa with crema verde. Their corn tortillas have such great flavor and hold up to all the fillings. Their salsa have changed my mind about "fruit" salsa. Our server Victoria was a rockstar. Her knowledge of all the menu items helped us decide what to try. We also appreciate her ability to recognize when we needed something and didn't constantly hover over us. Sonora Grill is now one of our favorite restaurants! read more

A friend of mine went on a last minute 'what they hell' Saturday night. The food was great. I had the H something roll... think of sushi but for 'meat' eaters. It had shrimp, chicken, steak, rolled up in a sushi type style and flash fried. Good, for sure, but wont crave it. My friend had the steak quesdilla, she liked it. The house margarita (little high at $11 a pop) ...was awesome. Why four stars? The service was s.l.o.w. Have more waitstaff during prime times... and if you're going to put in small print you are a dog friendly patio - have a little something for my glorious fur baby I leashed along. Sonora Grill...I just don't know about you. Your staff is THE WORST. I can't with them. I just can't. The incompetence is staggering. It seems your servers are fresh out of f***s to give; it's like they're purposely trying to be awful. Congratulations, they're succeeding admirably. Last time we were there we sat on the patio; there were 10 occupied tables and 4-5 servers working it yet we still had to flag someone down to ask for menus, order drinks, request the complimentary chips and salsa that every other table in our vicinity had received except us, remind them that we hadn't yet received all the food we ordered, etc. I lost count of the number of times a dead-behind-the-eyes server came up to our table with something we didn't order. Is there not some sort of numbering system to the tables to help the staff figure out who ordered what? Why all the confusion? I could go into a more detailed description of their suckage, but I'm just too exhausted thinking about it. That being said, your food is pretty darn tasty, but a little overpriced for what it is--street food. The two times we've eaten there, our tacos were all brought out one at a time, which is annoying. And WHY must you serve everything on those teeny, tiny plates?! You fill those corn tortillas so generously, to the point they are overflowing, but it's impossible to get all that deliciousness into my mouth unless I'm hunched over that tiny doll-sized plate in an attempt to ensure the fillings fall onto said plate, instead of the table or my lap. When I'm paying $4-$6 for a taco, you better believe I want every last morsel in my tummy. The last time we ate there, the slices of jalapenos on everything were absolutely enormous. I mean, I can handle it, but what about all those poor, unsuspecting white people that eat there? I don't think they are prepared to handle that level of heat. I've had unreasonably high expectations for this place ever since I saw the "coming soon" sign out front. I used to live across the street from the Midtown Global Market and frequented Sonora's location there weekly. I've been driving by the new location every day salivating, getting my hopes WAY too high. Tonight at their grand opening they somehow managed to exceed my expectations. Everything was so delicious. Many of the favorites from MGM are on the menu, along with many new additions. We tried the pinchos, ceviche and empanadas. It's hard for me to pick a favorite as everything was excellent. Our server asked to take some plates several times but we had to ask them to come back later because we wanted to keep dipping our forks in the leftover sauces. The cocktails were great, too. I preferred my wife's spicy tequila drink over my mojito. Sonora Grill is an exciting and welcome addition to the neighborhood. read more

My friend, Lara, wanted to go out for margaritas for her birthday. A quick google search for 'best margarita in Twin Cities' returned Sonora Grill. Onward!! The restaurant was easy to find, with easy parking in an adjacent lot. When we walked in, I was surprised at how busy and loud it was. We were seated right away and served water and chips and salsa. I'm not a huge fan of their salsa-very thin and smoky flavored. The chips were fantastic though. I ordered the Sonora Margarita....excellent. This was worth the trip alone. My friend ordered a different one-the 2015 winner of best margarita in the TC's. It had jalapeño pepper in it, and agave...it was OK. She loved it, and that's all that really mattered. For eats I ordered the revolving fish taco. It was lightly battered in tempura with a chili aioli-so good. I'd go back for more fish tacos for sure. I wanted to order rice and beans as a side, but I have a dairy allergy-and they couldn't make me beans without cheese. The waitress brought me the rice, but it was drenched in butter. Apparently the waitress didn't understand what 'dairy' is. No matter, my girlfriends devoured it. I'm giving this place 3 stars because I felt the service could have been better. Our waitress wasn't very friendly, and our water glasses remained empty for far too long. Salty chips call for lots of water! I think I would go back with my family. It lacked the adult feel that I wanted for a night out with friends-but it was good and I would try it again with readjusted expectations. read more

It's great to see Sonora Grill in its own brick and mortar! (If the owner is reading this, congrats!) Last month, I stopped by there for a meeting and grabbed both their cow tongue taco and Sonora Burger. *Cow Tongue Taco: When I first saw this stacked taco, I was actually pretty upset! I mean, four bucks for a taco is crazy no matter how beautiful. But then I sank my teeth in this beauty and forgot about the price. The meat was plenty tender and tasty, and I especially loved the magical cilantro salsa. I even ordered some for my burger. ($4) *Sonora Burger: This meaty burger is swole like Terry Crews, with it's thick patty, sliced tomato, hunk of lettuce and slices of red onion. Ooh, and that fluffy bun was hella delicious. Overall, it's not groundbreaking or a favorite of mine, but it gets the job done. ($10) *Service: Nicest. Guy. My partner and I have been going to Sonora Grill since 2020. The food has and continues to be great. The issue is that the service has gone downhill. It's really upsetting because we want to stop in for the amazing food-especially the chilaquiles, the sonora hot dog, and the chicken rojo taco. But, the poor service is just not worth it. We took some friends from out of town and our server was standoffish, didn't refill our drinks, and didn't stop by even though the place was pretty empty. I had the Empanadas and they were very good. I also had the Hermosillo Roll, which I didn't realize had seaweed, so I did not like :) People who like seaweed, may feel different. Light, packed with flavor and tender meat. My only complain is about size of the plates for tacos. They are snack size and does not hold the entire taco. While biting into the taco it leads to the meat and slaw falling out on the table which becomes inedible !!! Eggplant fries was oily but the chimichuri aioli helped get past the oily part of fries. I wouldn't recommend it. But the star of the meal was the drinks!! How can I forget the Margarita!! U have to try it and go for the second . Bold, spicy wth fresh serrano juice and a slice of jalapeño as a garnish. This will help make up for everything else you may not like on the menu. The owner is friendly and knows his drinks and food. The food and drinks are very tasty. They have a great atmosphere and overall I love the concept. However, the service is painfully slow. It feels like they have are able to get a sense of when they are slow or when they are busy. These places are challenging because you want to support quality but that also includes efficiency. We went here on my partner's birthday for brunch. We heard the chilaquiles were awesome and they did not disappoint. Do yourself a favor and get the avocado mouse on the side. I also got the Elote, which is very rich. I had heard good reviews, and I loved the sweetness of the coconut along with the sauce. Bonus : Our son was given pancakes. First time here. My sister said she had been here 3 or 4 times before and recommended we get shrimp tacos. I got the order to go and we just ate out of the trunk while she talked about how excellent their margaritas are. The tacos were delicious! $5 each seemed a bit high for the volume, and the corn tortillas weren't freshly made. If they were just pressed and warmed, they'd be a perfect taco. I got us 2 each and felt very satisfied though, probably because of the deep fried tempura batter. Ambience was very nice. Don't get set backed by my bad review. Sonora grill has the best tequila Bloody Mary's, shrimp tacos and beans & rice around. I also enjoy their beef tongue tacos (which I would usually never touch) and some of their entrees are also quite amazing. However, their service is disappointingly hit or miss. Mostly miss. I went there last month with some people and we ordered entrees & tacos after our drinks, chips and guacamole and our order was wasn't put in. We waiting patiently and cooperatively for over a half an hour before we asked if any of our tacos were coming. Not only did we get a new waitress (our previous one was still working however), we were still charged for everything and we didn't get our food for over an hour. We would have had more understanding but there was no apology or reimbursement. I would usually pass this off as one bad and non reoccurring occasion, but sadly that's not the case. I am not a critical reviewer, but I have had many experiences at Sonora where I have either been treated with little to no respect, had long wait times or have been obviously pushed out to accommodate the next dining party. And I purchase a lot when I go there. It's very disappointing and it does make me reconsider my cravings when I feel like dining at Sonora. My friends feel the same. read more

Two things: I can't believe that they charge five or more dollars per taco here. None of the meat tasted especially good from a marinade or flavor standpoint. And the presentation was horrible. I also don't understand why it's called Sonora Grill. Everything was on corn tortillas except for the steak taco, which was on a basic flour tortilla. None of it tasted mesquite grilled (if it was, it had sat in a warming tray long enough to loose the flavor). $7 for an ice cream scoop of guacamole. Not sure how this place is so expensive with mediocre food, sub par service, and ripped seats and benches. read more

We use to come here for the ceviche and tacos because they were fresh and prepared to order. The skirt steak tacos were freshly grilled and sliced skirt steak and delicious. Justifying the $5 price. Now they consist of chopped up meat and obviously sitting in a vat of juice ready to be served. The aguachile now consists of diced up shrimp (maybe). So sad they've lowered their standards. May as well go to a taco stand Willing to pay for fresh Mexican, not "chipotle's" Mexican. read more

Came here for brunch with some friends from out of town and had a great time. They were easily able to accommodate our group during the usually busy weekend brunch hours. Our server was extremely nice and enthusiastic in making recommendations and answering questions. Their Bloody Mary was simple although very tasty with a nice kick to it. The menu has a variety of good breakfast and lunch options which made it hard to choose one thing but I stuck to the Argentinian pork empanadas. They were well prepared with an amazing creamy sauce to compliment the flaky meat-filled pastries. I was only disappointed in that there wasn't more food on the plate.
