Never judge a restaurant by its building aesthetics. Sonora is the kind of Mexican restaurant which gives you that home cooked feeling. You know, the kind that makes you feel like your are visiting your mom, grandmother, or godmother. The moment we walked in, my wife and I were greeted with smiles and friendly service. They started us off with the the fundamentals of Mexican food, the chips and salsa. My wife enjoyed the salsa because it had the perfect kick of heat, not to hot or too mild. Next was the drinks, I ordered the horchata and my wife had the agua de tamarindo. Both drinks were perfect, not overly sweet like other places make them. For breakfast I order the huevos Mexicano and my wife had the huevos rancheros, oh so good. We also tried the dollar tacos, they are small but delicious. I typically do not eat as much as I did that day, but the food is that good. I couldn't let any go to waste. The best part was the freshly made flour tortillas. They are just like my grandmother use to make. Sonora is my new place to buy fresh tortillas that is 2 minutes away from home. The City of Chino has plenty of Mexican restaurant options but Sonora is the one that has climbed to the top of my preference list. read more

I went there for the first time and bought some tacos. For being street tacos, the tortillas were kinda hard. They are pretty cheap with their meat. The chorizo taco was the worst I couldn't eat it. Chorizo was spoiled u can tell it had been sitting in the fridge for weeks it had a funky smell and taste. The asada was chewy and no flavor. Bad texture as well it was like chunks of ground beef. The lengua was a bit better, it was pretty dry and it needed to be cooked longer. The chicharron taco wasn't great but better than the other ones. It had an okay taste just a bit dry. It seems like I'm finding out more places for me to grub at everytime I visit my hometown and more reason for my wife to like Chino! We found the place from Restaurant.com, which offers discounted gift certificate. The certificate was for $10 off any $20 order and you have to dine in. So it was 7 of us that decided to try it out and see if it will be one of our local eatery everytime we're in Chino. Every Mexican restaurant, I usually order the tacos because if they can't prepare the most simple Mexican food, then anything else is not worth eating. I order the Carnitas and Asada tacos and they came out pretty good (see the picture I posted)! And, they had a special for two tacos and a drink. The wife liked what she got also, beef and chicken tacos and so did the rest of the family. The fresh squeeze orange juice tasted good too. And, on the way out order the fresh tortillas, they were great! All in all the food was great and the owner was the one serving us, so pretty much took care of all our needs. I just recently went to Sonora Restaurant and let me just say that they exceeded my expectations! I ordered a Torta de Carnitas. It is the best torta I've ever eaten. The carnitas were so tender and flavorful. The crispy fresh lettuce and tomatoes were a perfect compliment to the carnitas. The lady in the cashier was so helpful and friendly! Hands down best sopes around. The portion is perfect and the toppings are the cherry on top. Super authentic place, loved the rice and beans that came with the dish (2sopes plate). It was my first time visiting this restaurant, when I got there the cashier was rude. I had told her that it was my first time but seemed that she didn't care. I was giving her my order, but the phone rang she then answered and left me talking, so I had to wait for her to fished taking order by phone. Went in at about 1pm on a weekday (no line) and was greeted by a very friendly girl at the counter. Ordered two carne asada burritos, a Machaca burrito, and a cheeseburger/ fries. The burritos are huge! My son and I loved the carne asada burritos, my father-in-law remarked that the Machaca burrito was one of the best he'd ever had, and my toddler son really liked the cheeseburger. The tortillas are homemade - and it makes all the difference in the world. I was offered salsa and the girl gave me four different types to try - which I really appreciated. Ever drive by a place a thousand times and say, "we should try that place," and constantly not go? That was me and my wife for the longest time with Sonora, probably because in So-Cal good Mexican restaurants are everywhere, so you always assume the one closest to your home just won't be "AS" good and you'll ultimately be disappointed. Well lets put that to rest right now, Sonora is amazing Mexican food, huge proportions, reasonable prices, tortillas made on location, a great deal of "WOW FACTOR." I've lived in Chino my whole life and places like Mi Ranchito, El Rey, and RIP El Rancho Grande have been institutions for good Mexican food, throw that in with the next door Pomona and Ontario spots, and I'm at a point where Mexican restaurants either have it or they don't. Sonora went to the top 3 after just a couple visits, now I'm bugging my wife, "Let's do $1 Taco Night," or "I'm craving a chicken burrito," etc. Basically, I'm trying to find reasons to eat at Sonora. If you're in the area, and you come to eat, make this a stop, you won't be disappointed. Ambiance and decor may turn some people off, but if want to marvel at your dining setting, drive to Las Casuelas in Palm Springs... My family and I are new to town and were cruising around in search of an authentic Mexican food joint and, well, we hit the JACKPOT when it came to Sonora! Despite the lack of aesthetics and people there (we were the only ones), Sonora's far exceeded our expectations when it came to friendliness by the cashier/waitress/cook and tastiness in food!!!! There's definitely a family-feel to this place and Jeanette, the cashier/waitress/cook, is as sweet as sweet can be. She treated us like family, despite being total and complete strangers, and made sure we had everything we needed, and actually threw in some unexpected extras that any restaurant would charge extra. I love supporting family businesses like Sonora's and appreciate the family-touch that large restaurant chains cannot offer. Walked in. Ordered. Few people seated eating. Looked like one other waiting for their order. I ordered a breakfast burrito and a small cup of menudo. Nothing special. 25 mins later I'm still waiting. This place has fallen so far that you are mistaken to consider its great past. Nothing is better than adequate for the food. Service is sadly resting on laurels long past. They don't care if you go any place else it's obvious. Today the chili relleno was a greasy mess with very little cheese. The sauce was from a can and chilly. The enchilada was a rolled up tortilla covered in a canned red sauce. If there was cheese in it then it escaped before making it to my plate. I ordered a soft drink from the fountain as I would have liked a refill... But obviously staying out of sight prevents anyone from serving. Our coworker insisted that we come here because of the phill burrito. We ordered that and a chile relleno plate - since i always try the chile relleno on any mexican place we go to. The phill burrito is HUGE. The burrito is at a good level of spicy - it is very spicy but you will keep eating and eating!! The chile relleno was pretty good too - not too soggy not too oily. The sauce that soaks the chile relleno is very delicious too. The rice had a lot of flavor (hints of garlic) - not like other restaurants where it looks like they just added orange colored powder to the rice. You get your money's worth. I have ate at Senora for over 30 years. I'm sad to say that today will be my last time. The worker asked me to put a mask on to pick up my takeout order. Meanwhile people are dining in without masks. Made a stop before church this past week with my boyfriend. We tried the lengua, asada, and carnitas tacos. I wasn't a huge fan of the lengua, but the asada was okay, though not what I expected at all -- it was as if they had spiced the meat differently than other taco places. It was good, just...different. And, weird to say, definitely not greasy enough. Though whether that's good or bad is another issue. The service was excellent though -- nice people, friendly, welcoming. Not the best, but definitely not the worst food, with great customer service. This is my go to spot for chile verde. I can honestly say that it's the best locally. I usually always get a chile verde burrito because they're huge! Tortillas are very authentic. I ordered carne asada burrito and the meat was dry and it was hard to tell if it was ever real! I like the salsa bar. I went when it was still hot in the mornings. Huevos a la Mexicana wasn't good at all. I think they thought it was still Halloween cause the rice was whiter than Casper and the onions where . How much did everyone eat their plate..... probably 5%-10%. We were not looking to get it our food compensated, didn't ask or brought it up. I know hole-in-the-wall places are good but that doesn't mean ALL of the hole-in-the-wall places are good. If a chinese person doesn't like the chow mein, if an italian doesn't like the wine, the salvadoran rejects the pupusas, if a mexican doesn't finish the food..... probably the wrong place to go to. ***If you get a lot of food on the plate, it's a sign..
