My friends and I recently did an LA taco tour, visiting various storefronts to find our favorite spot. Sonoratown was our first stop as it was highly recommended by my boyfriend's brother, and it did not disappoint. It immediately earned a spot in our top five favorite taco spots for carne asada in all of Southern California! The location that we went to is located in between Elysium DTLA and Perfumeria Starlux on E 8th St in downtown LA. There is only paid(?) street parking around the area that could be extremely difficult to find during work days. Because we couldn't snag a spot, my friends and I opted for takeout and didn't end up eating until about 30 minutes later. Despite the travel time, the tacos were still absolutely incredible--I can only imagine how spectacular it tastes fresh! My friends and I ordered the carne asada tacos, and my boyfriend opted for the cabeza. Before I even took a full bite, I tasted a piece of the loose carne asada and was blown away; it was perfectly cooked with a wonderful tenderness and deep smokiness. The use of a single, thin, handmade flour tortilla--rather than the standard double corn--was a total game-changer and exactly how I preferred my tacos. The salsas were equally impressive, offering fantastic flavor and a great kick. My boyfriend's cabeza taco was just as standout, featuring super-tender meat with a rich, savory profile. Wowowow! Between the exceptional meat quality, bold flavors, and great value, this is easily one of the best taco spots I've visited. It's a huge bummer that they don't have a location down in San Diego, but we will definitely be back!
Sonoratown's hype is real and hype is justified. I don't know why I never came here when I lived in DTLA, what a miss on my part. Oh well, no time like the present. I wanted to order all the things but I exercised some restraint and just ordered the CARAMELO ($8.75 - Flour tortilla, pinto beans, Monterey Jack cheese, avocado salsa, salsa roja, avocado, cabbage.). I picked chorizo as my protein option. I also, of course, had to also add the smoky grilled poblano chile for $1.25. It was SO good and FLAVORFUL - it didn't even need the salsas. Although, I will note that both the salsas were lovely. The flour tortilla was clearly freshly made. Also, it was a massive portion. I don't know what I was expecting. If this is the size of their caramelo, I don't want to know how giant the burrito is. I also had to get the cucumber agua fresca to pair with my caramelo. It was perfectly sweetened and wonderfully refreshing. I'll have to make my way back here now to try the burrito 2.0 and chivichanga.
This is my go-to spot! Food: INCREDIBLE! Never misses! I always get their tacos or burrito. Their tortillas are made handmade and you can definitely taste it/feel it by the texture. Not only are their tortillas incredibly delicious, but the meat is also super tender and just delicious! Service: Every time I go, they are always so nice and always so quick with service! I appreciate it always! Ambiance: Seating area inside is a bit small, but they also have seating outdoors too. I've never really had a problem looking for a seat! Overall, will always be my #1 spot!! Can't recommend this place enough to anyone!
Sonoratown recently earned recognition in the Michelin Guide as a "recommended" or "selected" restaurant. Despite it's recognition, I honestly wasn't too impressed. Casual interior, service wasn't the friendliest -seemed bothered answering our questions and located in DTLA (so street parking only). The chimichanga shredded chicken burrito was fondly reminiscent of those 99 cent frozen, microwave burritos that I ate as a kid. Lorenza and Caramello (see my pic) were decent, but nothing that I crave to drive all the way here again. Maybe, if I as in the area with no other options... sure.
This joint has been on my list for a while and finally got the chance to give it a try. Got the burrito 2.0 with asada (filling, Smokey flavor from the meat) and the Carmelo (think of it as an opened quesadilla, first time trying cabeza very tenderly cooked). The guacamole was average, I was hoping for more flavor. The pepino was refreshing. The sauces were not spicy at all. The food overall is good and you won't leave hungry, it was just missing the wow factor. Parking may be difficult as it is DTLA. I would come back, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.
Sonoratown lived up to the hype. The flour tortilla alone is worth coming for. Thin, blistered, chewy in exactly the right way and completely different from the generic tortillas you get almost everywhere else. Got the grilled meat folded into one of those ridiculous tortillas with the grilled green onion, radishes and salsas. Simple food where every component actually matters. This is the kind of place I want in LA: tiny menu, no bullshit, incredibly good at the thing they do.
Tried the coyotas and coconut horchata with dinner and both were great! Never had a coyotas before but it's kind of like a brown sugar poptart with a hint of spices. I imagine a freshly baked one is absolutely delicious. The chiltepin salsa gives such a nice kick to the burritos and chivi.
Having been repeatedly on the Taco Madness roster, I had to come down here for myself to see what all the hype was about. The bike group I ride with sometimes, called 'Critical Masa' had this as one of the ride destinations so I was not gonna miss out. The interior had a lot of cool decorations. They took our order relatively quick despite their being a line. Me and my friend split a bean and cheese burrito. He got the jamica with a slight taste of cucumber to it and I got the coconut horchata. Everything was delish. I see now why they make the list almost every year. My friend said it was the best bean and cheese burrito he's ever had.
Had this bookmarked for ages! I showed up on Sunday night at 815p and there were only two parties ahead of me. I read rumors of lines, but YMMV depending on when you show up. The menu is quite simple, but beware that no prices are listed on the main menu, but they are on the paper menus. They accept Apple Pay/credit cards. I ordered the asada burrito and the pollo caramelo and added the grilled poblano (as recommended on Yelp!). The tortillas were the true stars -- soft, nice chew, with a buttery mouth feel (probably lard). The fillings were just ok. The inside reminded me of a Taco Bell 7 layer burrito -- a lot going on but all the flavors kinda blend together. I (incorrectly) thought the beans were refried, but they are not. Whatever is going on inside, I didn't find much structure. The burrito was the best. The caramelo was a lazily folded burrito. I read that it was like a quesadilla, but I couldn't disagree more. I would skip this next time. I spent $25 and it was a lot of food, but I wasn't impressed, especially given the hype and the fact that LA should really be the pinnacle of Mexican food. Not sure if I'll make a second trip here.

Went here the other night since it was like a block away. Have always heard about how great the burrito was, so that was the priority. Line was pretty long but moved fast enough. Got an asada burrito and asada tacos. The tacos were decent, meat was good but they weren't necessarily memorable. The burrito, let me start by saying that the tortilla was wonderful. Has such a great flavor, and the perfect texture, just a great tortilla. The burrito itself was good, but felt it had too many pinto beans, to the point they were overpowering the cheese, guacamole and asada. Still a good burrito, though I feel the tortilla has a lot to do with that.
Asada Burrito 2.0 Beans, cheese, choice of meat, all blended really well together. Surprisingly packed burrito. Had to take smaller bites so that my mouth wasn't over overwhelmed (pause) with food. 1 cabeza Taco Tortilla super soft, good contrast. nice fatty parts, some part of crispy. The cabbage is great mouth feel. Green salsa with a bit more on the acidic side while the red sauce was a lot more refreshing would definitely go for a second red sauce next time. You can get cheaper and more quantity at other taco places but you'll be missing out on how high quality it is. Would recommend
Finally came in-person to eat at Sonoratown after always ordering from Uber Eats/Doordash! I highly recommend coming to dine in, since the food tastes sooo good fresh. The flavors are amazing. I love their chorizo burritos and their tortillas are so unique and delicious! Limited in door seating with a couple of tables outside on the street. Parking is just typical DTLA street parking. My son who lives in DTLA introduced us to Sonoratown back in January. We like it so much we came back again this summer. I immediately loved the smoky taste of their grilled meats. The tacos, guacamole and chips are all delicious. Its just a casual spot in DTLA they have a few indoor seating options as well as outside. They do a lot of take out and door dash orders so not a lot of space is needed. On my future visits to see my son we will be definitely coming here! read more
Sonoratown is one of the most popular taco spots in LA and has been featured on several shows such as Food Tours and Worth It. Since I have heard so many good things about it, I had extremely high expectations for this spot. However, it was definitely a big letdown. The service was quick and efficient but nothing special. There was some space to sit down and eat inside which is nice, but the food was such a letdown. The flavor was just not as strong as other places I have been, and the tortilla, which they are known for, was extremely unflavorful and bland. In fact, there was no texture to it. I had spent a day trying different tacos in LA, and this was by far the least impressive spot. Hopefully it was just a one time letdown, but I'm not sure if I am looking forward to coming again. Overall, Sonoratown was just a tourist trap for me. It looks popular and fancy, but the flavors were a huge letdown. read more
Great location, busy ambiance, good food! I wanted a quick bite, and was drawn in by the amount of people waiting in line here. I figured it must be good! It's located in downtown! It's a cute little shop, and there's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating (pictured). I felt pretty safe the entire time! It appears the restaurant may have been around for some time, like a downtown staple! For my lunch, I got 2 carne asada tacos and one bean and cheese burrito! I give the burrito a 10/10, but the asada tacos seemed to fall a little bit short. They just didn't taste that flavorful to me. There's also no sour cream available, but that may be a cultural thing. Heard great things and dropped by for a quick snack when I was picking up my alterations in the fashion district. I got a cucumber lime agua fresca and a chicken chivichanga. Both were delicious, I looooove the salsas that came with it--really elevated the chivichanga. It was pretty busy around 1-2pm on a weekday, and the inside has limited seating although there is also outdoor seating. Limited parking so plan on walking a bit. Would come back! read more

When you come to LA LA you can't leave without having a proper taco. There's thousands of taco trucks and everyone has their favorite, but I'm really glad I took the advice of my lunch date and checked out this hole in the wall in downtown LA. Tacos were absolutely delicious. Priced amazingly in comparison to the seven dollar or eight dollar taco in DC. There's not much to say tacos are definitely worth it. Check it out. read more
I don't wanna Taco bout it How you broke my heart.... 5/5 Horchata with coco was on point, ask for light ice so it's not just ice with a splash of the agua. Aguas frescas taste fresca aka freshly made for my non Spanish speakers. 5/5 Red Salsa was very good and the kick that everything was missing. A good salsa is just as key as what it goes on. Didn't try the others since they only packed that one. Should've added the different one. 3.5/5 Service was pretty fast given how busy it was. There was a line outside the door I almost walked away but was lucky enough to find parking close by. Order at the counter and wait for your order. No napkins on a take out order was a bit disappointing. Especially given the juiciness coming out of the Chivichanga. Only the red salsa was given, thought at least they'd give the green as well, my misteak. 4/5 Chivichanga Shredded beef was really good. But the red salsa made it better. 2.5/5 Tacos were really bland and Luke Skywalker warm at best. I started eating them as soon as I got back in my car and they just felt cold. I was looking forward to this place based on other Yelpers reviews. Sad to say this place didn't meet expectations. Cold tacos, no napkins and just one kind of salsa. They've perfected the art of the flour tortilla here. It's not unusual to have a burrito wrapped in a flour tortilla, but not often do you find authentic street tacos using flour tortillas. I've definitely been missing out, because these tacos were incredible. Not only does the flour tortilla have the perfect texture, but the meat has amazing flavor and tenderness. We tried the cabeza, tripa and chorizo tacos and they were certainly up there with the best. We also had the burrito with the costilla and I wouldn't be surprised if it was the best streak burrito I've had. The burrito was great to dip in their delicious salsas. All their salsa were great but the extremely spicy chiltepin was a standout. I really feel like they make the best version of every type of thing they offer here. Even the horchata was fantastic, I'd challenge anyone to find a better horchata. It was really easy to come in here and eat too, the place is very popular but the line wasn't very long and food came out fast with plenty of places to sit. If you can find a way to get to downtown LA, this definitely needs to be a required stop. read more

The prices are a bit high and to be honest the first couple of times I went the service wasn't all that great. But! That all changed once I became a regular which is kind of nice. Not a big fan of their tacos although they have an award for best taco if I'm not mistaken? But maybe that's because I'm not a big flour tortilla person to begin with. Their tripa is also too crunchy and stale felt more like chicharon. However! Their chorizo burrito is DELICIOUS and so is their horchata de coco! I'd say give it a try if you're in the area! It's definitely my go to spot when working in Downtown LA! Ah and the ambiance isn't bad! You can eat in and even get a drink which is pretty neat! read more

My girlfriend loves this taco spot so I got a single taco with her too. I ordered a cabeza taco which was ready within 5 minutes. The cabeza taco was very moist and juicy. The meat was also tender and flavorful too. I liked how the tortilla also stayed in shape and didn't break even with all the juices flowing out. Overall, I liked the taco. I'm not that big of a fan for steak/beef tacos but this one was pretty decent. I will probably update this review once I try the rest of the tacos on the menu read more

This a great spot for tacos and burritos in DTLA. Ordered the cheese quesadilla and bean and cheese burrito -- both were yummy. They also have fresh tortillas to take with you. It's a small place with some seating inside. Street parking is tricky since it is near the floral and garment districts. Service is quick and staff are always friendly. read more

I wanted to try this spot but after snacking at Santee alleys, I found myself just thirsty. They offer several aguas frescas. A large is about $6, better than Santee alley at $8. Stopped here to grab something to eat for some quick energy snack. This burrito was good but I do wish there was rice in it. The guacamole was great in there too. Less beans for me. Came in on a Saturday afternoon and they weren't very busy. We got our food pretty quickly too. I got the carne asada tacos (3.5/5) which was good. They make really good salsa here. I just wish the tacos had more in it like cilantro, onions, and crema. The horchata con coco (3.5/5) was good too. It was a little too gritty, but it had a nice coconut aftertaste. Overall not a bad taco spot. I think for the price the tacos should have more in them. read more
For parking, there are a few meter parking across from the store. However, I went on a Sunday at lunch time and those spots were all taken. I decided to pay for a public lot around the corner. For seating, there are stool seats inside faced towards the wall and a few tables in front of the table as well. Not ideal for accommodating a large group. Considering it was lunch time, the store was definitely busy. The service was good and I received my order within a reasonable time frame. I ordered the Burrito 2.0 with everything inside and Chorizo. It came with a green & red sauce, radish, lime, and grilled green onion. This is one of my favorite taco spots in DTLA. They are consistently good. The people at the counter are friendly and the people who hand out your order are too. My go-to order is usually a chicken, chorizo, and/or grilled steak taco. That's it. They season the meat with great and bold flavor. The salsas are fresh and hot. Sometimes I'll get a canned Modelo or Pacifico to go with the tacos. At Sonoratown you run into all walks of life and everyone seems friendly and open to chatting. Seating is available inside or tables outside. Parking can be tough but it's DTLA so you can expect that you might not find parking right away but I usually find a spot on the side streets. read more

Viva Sonora-town! Delicious food in a friendly, colorful shop. The poblano-bean tacos were awesome, and people rave about the cabeza and carne asada tacos. Nothing better than washing it down with a real Coke or a beer or a horchata...or all three! If you love Sonora style tortillas this is the place to get them in La! I usually come here to pick up a pack of the taco and burrito size tortillas to eat at home. But since I make the trek to DTLA I usually pick up a quesadilla and bean and cheese burrito. Their steak is flavorful but sometimes it tends to have a lot of fatty chunks in it. read more

I happened to be visiting L.A and did a quick google search for some sonora style tacos and it was the first spot that populated on the search. I didn't even check for reviews just went in to try. Food: The tacos were so good! Seasoning on point on all the tacos I tried. I had cabeza, costilla, tripa, and chorizo. My favorite was the cabeza and tripa. I also had an agua de jamaica and it tasted just as expected, none of that syrup jamaica concentrate, I could tell it was directly made from the flower. Parking: we paid $17 at a near by parking lot as we couldn't find an open spot near by. Service: Friendly staff and we didn't wait much for our food to be brought out to us to where we were sitting. Price: Average price, just as some tacos spots in the area. Ambiance: Very small inside but we were still able to find a spot to sit inside. Cool decor on walls. I will definitely come back whenever I'm visiting L.A!! My new favorite spot! read more

Been coming here since they first opened. I see that they've expanded to a few more locations. Congratulations and good for them. I appreciate what they're doing and this is a tough neighborhood to thrive. That said, I had a lot of chewy gristle-y asada in my burrito this last trip, and it wasn't very hot. Different grill I think from when they first started. Anyway, times are tough, I get it - but it'll be a minute before I go out of my way to revisit. read more

I finally made it to Sonoratown and I'm glad I did. If you're looking for real Sonoran-style tacos, this place delivers. I got three tacos--chorizo, cabeza, and costilla--all served on their incredible handmade flour tortillas. These tortillas are next-level: soft but sturdy and full of flavor. They never fell apart, a small but essential win when eating tacos. Chorizo - Sonoran-style chorizo is a little different from what you might be used to. It's not crumbly like the typical Mexican chorizo from the store, but also not firm like Spanish chorizo. It lands somewhere in between--super flavorful, slightly spicy, really good... but not as good as the costilla. Cabeza - If roasted cow head gives you pause, trust me--you're only cheating yourself. It was insanely tender, buttery, and just melted in my mouth. Costilla - Easily my favorite. Perfectly grilled, seasoned rib steak meat that was juicy and packed with smoky goodness. Would come back just for this. Service was fast and friendly. I went on a Tuesday evening, and there was plenty of seating--got my food in about five minutes. It's a casual spot, a little loud, but nothing crazy. There are a ton of great tacos in LA, but Sonoratown is one of the best. It's a nice change from the usual taco scene here, and it really feels like a special spot. Can't wait to come back. read more
