Great menu I'm eating my way through all of it. Grab a table on the street and dine in the sunshine. Melt in your mouth tortillas everything is made with love. My friend and I both decided this place looked pretty good so we decided to give it a try. We went on a saturday around 11am and parking is horrible!! So keep that in mind if you do decide to come. We had to circle around a lot and were lucky enough to find street parking 2 blocks away. If not, you'll have to park in those expensive ass parking lots. We ordered about 6 tacos, one chivichanga and one bean and cheese. We both agreed that the tacos were not so great. The chivichanga however was freaking amazing!! I loved how soft and warm it was and I got mines with beef which was cooked perfectly and had so much flavor. The bean and cheese was pretty good too if you want to opt out of eating meat. I'd come back again soley for the chivichanga. The salsas were good too but the red one was super spicy so if you have no spice tolerance whatsoever don't even try. I'm pretty good with spicy foods but I had to drink soooo much water with it too, just fyi! Sonoratown is a must-visit for angelinos and tourists alike. Truthfully not my favorite burritos in the city, but they definitely hit the spot if you're looking for authentic Mexican food. It can be kind of chaotic depending on what time of day you go, but usually they are very quick at fulfilling orders. The steak (Castillo) burrito is my favorite. A decent size too. Located in downtown LA is Sonoratown. Parking can be stiff so recommend avoiding prime time dining hours. Upon entrance they have a ton of accolades - best burrito in LA, tacos etc so waiting to order really makes you think "WOW, THIS IS going to be the best burrito I ever had!" Even the line out the restaurant makes you think this place is the goat. The menu is pretty straightforward and decently priced (Tacos $3.25 to burritos that are $10). I ordered the burrito 2.0 for $10. What makes this place a gem is the flour tortillas are made in house and so good. The meat is also cooked really well which is why I can see the hype for this place. However, everything else that was in the burrito was lacking for myself. Not enough flavor, chunky guacamole and salsa-- it was just basic for myself. A little disappointed, yes but still good. However, the tortilla chips were delicious with the salsa--do recommend! So simple yet so delicious. I think the chewy handmade tortillas are what set them apart for me. The quesadilla fell short for me as it's the traditional style on a small tortilla and it was a little dry. The chivichanga was also great as it's filled with the most meat but the burrito is where it's at and I preferred it to the other 2 items we tried. The Burrito 2.0 is made with your choice of meat (I recommend the costilla, grilled steak), chunky guac, Jack cheese, pinto beans and salsa. They also offer pollo, tripa and chorizo. Their pinto beans are made with roasted poblano and chile so they are packed with flavor. The red salsa is the spicier one and absolutely fantastic. The green is nothing to sleep on either! The avocado sauce was the least memorable for me. I also ordered a simple bean and cheese burrito for later. These are on the smaller side so if eaten alone you would need a few to fill you up, but I think I may have liked this the most out of everything we ordered. read more

Best tacos in LA? In a city of 15 million taco shops, that's a high bar. But this place is very good and very popular. Everything is cooked fresh to order. The flour tortillas are very good. Watch out for the salsas: I have a very high tolerance for spice and my lips were still on fire a half hour after my meal. I thought the tacos were fine. We tried steak, chicken, and chorizo and, surprisingly, the chicken was the best. It was the juiciest of them all. I thought the chivichanga (chicken) was EXCELLENT. It was incredibly juicy and you really got to fully enjoy that fresh flour tortilla. Next time, I'm skipping the tacos and going with a burrito or the chivi. I'm not a huge fan of watermelon but the watermelon agua fresca was the very best agua fresca I've had in my life. It tasted like you were diving head first, mouth open, into the juiciest watermelon ever. Spectacular. They do booming business with to go orders so you might have to wait a little even if the restaurant is not swamped. The restaurant is located just on the outskirts of skid row so watch yourself. There's not much more I can say here that everyone hasn't already but giving a shout out to Sonoratown for being available on UberEats (saving me from those lines), in turn inciting what for a couple of months turned into a 2-3x/week addiction. From sampling everything on the menu (including their bag of tortilla chips offering which are so good and I have yet to find where else they're sold) to prowling through their socials for what seems like a genuinely amazing business rooted in family and love, I'm a big, big fan. I heard they've opened a location in Mid-City but this DTLA one will always have a real place in my heart. The tortillas, the meats and salsas (love there's also a nice kick with both)...are all absolutely delicious and hit the spot. Great, now I'm craving tacos again. And their Carmelo. This is a great little hole in the wall place! It's located in the flower district. The food was good but I think the meat lacked a little flavor. I had 2 tacos of costillas with the homemade flour tortillas. The customer service was great! Everyone had smiles on their faces. I tried the chorizo burrito 2.0 at Sonoratown. Burrito was delicious. What makes this burrito taste great was the handmade flour tortilla, the chorizo has a nice spicy kick to it and the side of green salsa that they give you was delicious. I also tried a piece of the carne asada burrito that my son was having. The asada wasn't all that special. It was my misfortune, I suppose, to get caught up in the cuteness of this establishment but not the reasons that have caused others to rave over this establishment. I had nothing but positive experiences with the staff who interface with the public. My order was taken in kindness, and those who supported me as my wait extended long past anyone's patience - which is my tendency, because I know we're all only human. One is these sweet souls brought my order out to my car, unprompted, as I'd had to leave to move my vehicle if necessary, given how long I had been inside. But, this particular day, a couple of months ago, something was wrong in that kitchen. Not only were my tacos tardy, they weren't good. They lacked seasoning and were unpleasant to eat. The kind soul who'd done the impromptu car hopping had thrown in some chips for free. They weren't good either. This was a bad day in Sonoratown for me. A couple of days ago I was downtown with my fiancé and daughter, the latter of whom was craving a taco from the Farmer's Market, but it was closed for Christmas Eve. My friends and I came here for a pre-show dinner and I didn't know what to expect. My friend and included it in the schedule for the evening and I hadn't heard anything about Sonoratown and I decided to keep some mystery about it and not look it up. Sonoratown is like if a streetside taco stand became a brick and mortar. The prices are a little higher than a stand but not by much. I ended up getting a couple chorizo tacos, a costilla burrito and the tripas quesadilla with an agua fresca; I was hungry. After getting my order I thought I might have overordered. Their outdoor patio area was full but we managed to get a table. I did get a little more food than I should have but after I bit into the taco I knew I was going to finish all of it. The tripas in particular still had a bit of crunch to it. The chorizo was also surprisingly good; I've had a lot of chorizo that was just kind of like a spiced mush but the chorizo here had flavor and texture that I really enjoyed. I don't really like going to DTLA but I would make the trip just for Sonoratown. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place before now. Super solid. They have a flour tortillas that are super tasty, which are the cornerstone of their whole operation. They offer a variety of meats, but replacing the typical asada is costilllas (rib meat). Burrito 2.0 is a solid burrito. A Caramelo is similar to a large quesataco. Chivichangas are a fried burrito with a shredded beef or chicken. I'm not as big of a fan of these as I wish there were other ingredients (or the burrito 2.0 fried). Typically I get the Caramelo and the burrito, but I get the cabeza. It's beef cheek and a fattier and tastier piece of meat. The wait isn't too long and service is always nice. Inside is a bit small and cramped, and thus I've never chosen to sit in there. Get yourself a topo chico, sit on the sidewalk and enjoy DTLA in all its weirdness. read more

I stopped by for lunch today, and it was a disaster from start to finish. The Steak Tacos were a complete letdown--more cabbage than tortilla and steak combined, with barely any flavor. The beef chivichanga was decent, but not enough to save the experience. The service, though, was by far the worst part. The guy in the Dodger shirt, who was calling out orders, looked like he hated being there. His attitude was rude and dismissive. When I asked for a side of salsa, he acted like it was the biggest inconvenience in the world and snapped, "You gotta pay for that." Fine, but if you're going to charge extra for something as basic as salsa, maybe have staff who don't make customers feel like they're a burden. This place is charging premium prices for mediocre food and atrocious service. I'll take my money to a local street taco vendor next time, where the food is better, and the people don't treat you like an annoyance and the portion sizes are bigger. Oh man, this is probably my favorite taco place in DTLA. After doing a taco crawl of three restaurants in the area, Sonoratown took the crown by far!!! Tripas taco (5/5): this is amazing! You won't regret ordering this at all. You can taste the smokiness of the intestines paired with bites of savory crunchiness from the edges. Each bite had such delicious flavors paired with the crunch of the radish, roasted whole green onion, and complimentary sauces. Steak taco (4/5): decent! It was a yummy taco but I just wasn't as wowed as I was with the previous one. The smokiness is still infused into the meat and it was good to try. Aqua fresca (5/5): we ordered the cucumber and lime! It was such a refreshing drink. It tastes mainly of cucumber with a hint of acidity from the lime juice. By far the best carne asada and cabeza tacos we've had in LA ($3.50/taco). We've lived in LA for years and have tried almost every taco spot that you should try in LA and nothing compares to this. One of us was born and raised in Mexicali, Mexico and have been desperate to find a decent carne asada taco but have been found wanting. Most places you go to, they're all the same- the carne asada tastes bland, there is no char, no juiciness, and we usually have to ask for salt. But THIS TACO is everything you want and expect in a carne asada- tender, flavorful, juicy, with just the right amount of char and saltiness. The cabeza meat was not too wet or too dry, packed a good amount of flavor and melted in your mouth. They also use flour tortillas made with lard, that's how you also know it's authentic. We did have to say however the tripa fell short for us, that would be our only reservation. The service was great. People are friendly and bring the food out to you. Ambiance is cozy and welcoming. There are about 4 tables outside and a few more inside so not a ton of seating space but enough. No restrooms though and parking was street parking which can be tricky depending on time of day.
