My friend chose this place for her birthday. Luckily there was no wait, so were seated and ordered right away. The portions are huge, so make sure to ask for half portions if you can't finish everything. I love that they offer bacon wrapped enoki mushrooms! We ordered so many of those! The corn cheese, ban chan, and meats were all so yummy. It was nice of the staff to bring out a strawberry ice cream macaron for the birthday girl. They even sang too! It's all you can eat, so if you don't finish everything, you do have to pay extra. They do allow you to take extras to-go though, for $6 a box, if you wish to do so! read more

The first KBBQ spot we tried in Oceanside.. not bad at all! Great meat quality and options on the menu. We went with Deluxe menu $28.99pp. The side dishes were okay.. I must say the salad was sooo good, the dressing they make is just so delish. If you're into the mildly spicy soy dressing.. i had like 5 bowls of it (the bowl is small, in my defense ). The reason for one less star is the service. Some were on top of their game, others not so much.. nonetheless, this is a great kbbq spot in Oceanside I would recommend and come back to. They also played k-pop the whole time and the entire duration of our meal, they played Big Bang and Black Pink... totally my jam and it made the experience that much better haha! read more

The meat was chewy like bubblegum. The only edible piece of meat wasn't actually the meat, it was the shrimp and the salmon. I had to send the steamed eggs back, inedible and medicinal. Our favorite spot to eat every time we go to Camp Pendleton beach. The meats are great quality, and love all the side options that come in the ayce buffet. Love the kimchi fried rice, & the spicy beef soup. The steamed egg is very good here too. Actually has flavor & doesn't taste just like plain eggs like some places I've been to. Our favorite meats to order are the thin pork belly, the brisket, & the yummy peppered steak finger. It's not literally fingers. Lol but it's very tender & so flavorful if you cook it right. Great ambience, just certain spots can be hot during summer. They need to crank up that ac. But service is always top notch. They do offer military discount. And they also have half prices for kids depending on height. Which kinda sucks cuz we have some tall kids with very little appetite. We went as a party of seven to this very fun location and enjoyed super fast and friendly service from multiple wait staff. All of the food was fresh and delicious! They changed our grill plate frequently and without us having to ask. The high dividers between booths helped with a sense of privacy so we could enjoy our visit without feeling that we were impinging upon the experience of other diners. The tables are large enough to accommodate a variety of foods that you plan to cook, along with the beverages and copious tasty AND beautiful sides. I've been a customer for nearly 6+ years. After leaving a review about unclear last-call vs. posted closing hours, a staff member approached us while we were waiting to be seated and pulled out a tablet, saying "this is you, huh?" and that she would like to discuss the review after dinner. Instead, she pulled us aside as soon as we sat down and showed a flyer with last-call information placed ONLY at our table. She repeatedly explained "how Korean BBQ works," but there was no apology, no acknowledgment that last-call hours were not posted anywhere else in the restaurant or online, and the interaction felt condescending, with the comment that "every Korean BBQ place does it the same." When I pointed out that past visits had included service past 10pm and that the posted operating hours alone were misleading to customers, she dismissed it. At one point, she became upset when another employee needed her tablet (still displaying my previous review. I know what the review says, I wrote it.), showing how focused she was on controlling the interaction rather than serving guests. Approaching us before seating created a sour tone before we even started our meal and felt unnecessary and unprofessional. This particular staff started off as a server and she was much friendlier it seems as her new role has changed her approach. It's also not the first time she is rude to us or her staff .A night that was supposed to be a fun dinner date turned into an awkward evening due to one staff member's unprofessionalism. This is the end of my and my family's relationship with this restaurant. Heads up: leaving a review may result in an in-person confrontation!!! read more

I've gone to Sonu multiple times and each time, they kill. their staff is friendly, they seat us quickly, they have a spectacular variety of meats that all taste fantastic (personal fave is the garlic finger meat), their corn cheese is to die for, and their kimchi is made in house! Sonu is my #1 place to bring friends visiting out of town. I've been to many other kbbq places and Sonu is definitely up there for me. and they're not stingy with their meats! Pretty typical all you can eat Korean BBQ. It's run by Chinese, so the flavors are tasty, but not 100% accurate to Korean palate. The Bonchon is decent, and the kimchee mediocre. The service is very nice, quick and efficient. Servings are surprisingly large, I would recommend ordering a plate less than you usually would. The kimchi fried rice is a definite must. The Galbi is thick and good, but not traditional was not bone in. Enjoyed the mini-octopus and squid. The Bulgogi was very tasty, but again just not exactly to the Korean palate. Overall a good experience. I think I prefer to go to a legit Korean establishment if I'm spending money in calories to go Korean (for the 100% traditional flavors), but if I'm in the area again I would have no issue eating here again. read more

It's odd that you have to go to the outskirts of Oceanside, in a pretty unprepossessing suburban strip mall to find first rate Korean BBQ. But such are the mysteries of dining out. There are of course other K-Q spots in Kearny Mesa that get a lot of hype--some of it deserved and some of it not--but Sonu is the dark horse that competes with the best of them. The premises themselves are clean, although it is showing a bit of wear and tear. The interior is not unlike an old steakhouse of old: booths with padded seating, low ceilings, dimly lit, etc. It does smell wonderfully of roasting meats. But there the similarities end. This is a traditional Korean bbq, as much as you can eat. There are two options: a standard plan and a deluxe, the latter offering several extra meat and non-meat dishes (including their tasty "rib fingers"). But each menu option offers a host of options likely to sate anyone's particular tastes. Some dishes are better than others, but in general almost everything they bring is good quality. They have a nice variety of banchan as well, a favorite part of Korean dining in our family. Everyone leaves satisfied and indeed happily stuffed. There are admittedly a couple of downsides. In general, the waitstaff is attentive in taking orders and bringing you your dishes, but when they're busy there is a notable diminution of service. It is also pretty much off the beaten path; so, unless you live in the area, it's a destination spot. Lastly, as it is family friendly, it can get quite loud; children can and do get underfoot. It is definitely not a spot for a romantic date (of course, if your date suggests Korean bbq, then maybe they're telling you they want to keep things Platonic). But these are relative minor issues. Overall, Sonu is as good Korean BBQ as you're going to find in the San Diego region. It is also an especially attractive option for those living in North County. A great little spot. read more

Service is really good. They came by to change the grill several times without me even asking. The waitlist option on Yelp is really nice too so you don't have to wait too long once you arrive which is definitely helpful for those with young kids and little patience. Ambiance is typical for Kbbq places. Bathroom floors were a bit slippery and one of the stalls in the women's restroom had the metal hook hanging off and when I opened the door it cut my pinky.. so beware of that. Food has 2 tiers - deluxe and premium. Premium has more options like Kobe beef, salmon and poke bowl but we just we went with the deluxe option as that has all the typical meats and also shrimp, squid and some other options. Brisket was okay. The marinated short ribs were well seasoned and was quite tasty. We got the fresh squid but it wasn't my favorite. Shrimp is shell on so my husband was lazy to peel it...I also got an order of the kimchi stew which was a bit too sour for my tastes. The side dishes weren't as good as other places either. Kimchi fried rice wasn't my favorite either. They did have corn cheese and that was quite good. All in all, it's a decent option for a kbbq place but not my favorite. read more

The general manager "new year" is her name very rude and disrespectful and show no empathy to her coworkers heard her tell one of her fellow coworkers "to get out of my way " instead of excuse me. Always fighting with her husband that works there in personal opinion they should not be working together! Because it obviously effects her work life if she acts like that she has slammed the plates of meat on the table that we asked for when it originally never came out ,people I know who worked there have quit because they get treated like children and apparently she doesn't care about how she treats them because she won't change and there's always salt on the ground just gives it a messy look and the food quality wasn't that good last time I went will not be returning! The best Korean BBQ restaurant in San Diego North County! Unlike most of the all you can eat Korean BBQ restaurant who threw bulk of frozen meets, they select their meat with profections and marinated beef is spot on. All staffs are SUPER friendly and go extra miles to make us feel happy here. Been here a couple times, food is great never had an issue however today the waiter named [NewYear] made the experience very unpleasant and will never be coming back here again. We had a party of 9 we were missing 1 person but they were taking so long to show up we ended up just getting 9 of us seated. Well our 1 person ended up showing up like 10-15 min later after we were sat down (mind you we had a big table extra seats) we told one of the waiters helping us that we will be adding that person and paying for them she said that was fine. BUT Ms. NewYear over here felt the need to come to our table WHILE WE WERE EATING to tell us that "next time this happens the extra person will have to sit at a different table blah blah blah" LOL like bro we are paying for the service. we were visiting oceanside beach and Yelp led us here . I knew before we were escorted to our seats that they will close in 2 hours . The friendly young lady informed me, their last calling for food is at 9:30 so they can close at 10 , and if we are fine with that . With my daughter and her friends for dinner , two of her friends never had Korean food, one of my daughter's friend expressed how much flavor the marinated beef were and the corn cheese was her favorite, and the grilled meats She never had it cooked this way .
