The chicken and sopapillas and the shrimp & grits were real stand outs! They are definitely unlike anything you can get anywhere else and a must-try! The quesadilla was good, but the tacos were terrible. It needed salt, a lot of it, as if the cook forgot to season them so I was just eating meat. I've never had a bad experience here. The last visit was above and beyond exceptional. They were short-staffed but you wouldn't know it. It was nice to see the managers stepping up and helping out their servers. With Covid protocols they did a nice job seating people and keeping everyone safe. Food: Exceptional as always but this was the fist time for the Grilled Pineapple Guacamole and let me just say, my brain broke when I took my first bite. The flavors literally exploded in my mouth. You get all the flavors of chipotle honey-glazed pineapple, bacon and queso fresco. I'm pretty sure the table next to us heard my uncomfortable moans of pleasure because they quickly asked which Guacamole we ordered. It is a must try and honestly, I could eat that and drink the green-chili habenero margaritas all day. Their skinny margarita is absolutely delicious as wel and is only $6 on Mondays! Lastly, I had the Quesadilla Del Mar with crab, shrimp, Brie, chilies, bacon and onion with a yummy mango chili glaze. Seriously y'all must go and eat here! Returned to Sopapillas for a dinner meal. It was Saturday and we didn't have a reservation but the staff were gracious and able to accommodate us quickly. Note - It is best to get reservations, especially for dinners and weekends! We ordered draft beer, Dos Equis, which was served promptly. I went with Shrimp Quesadillas which were terrific! Such great flavor and the shrimp has a grilled almost smokey quality. Really one of my favorite dishes! Husband had the Green Chili Cheeseburger, one of their signature dishes. He reported the burger was very tasty, excellent quality meat. Only negative was the fries, listed as Seasoned Fries on the menu, appeared to be plain ole fries. Asked our server who didn't seem to be aware of the Seasoned vs. Non-seasoned fries. Overall though, Sopapillas continues to deliver consistent great food! read more

Ambiance is great. My teenage son was a little worried that we dressed too causally. We were seated fairly quickly without a reservation....But after that, it was a very long wait for the foods (45 minutes?). The server never refilled our empty glasses. My favorite Mexican spot I've found in the Nashville area so far! Currently location is great to me, as I live a few short miles away. Food and drinks are fantastic. I've only had the house marg but it's classic and I've never been disappointed. On the food menu I've had some of the tacos, some of the street tacos, enchiladas, fajita salad, and carne asada. I think the standout item (for me) is the pork belly taco. I could eat it several times a week and never tire of it. Chips and salsa are made fresh in house and always come out warm. As a Native Texan, I'm always leery of eating Mexican food outside of Texas. Anyone who loves Tex-Mex is always hesitant to branch out. I can tell you that the vast majority of my experiences with Mexican food outside of the great State of Texas has been negative. Thankfully, Sopapilla's came through with a bang and gave us a great experience. First of all, this is not Tex-Mex. Sopapilla's is a Mexican food with a New Mexico flair. We started our meal with a chili con queso appetizer. It was very good. It was also free as a reward for checking in on Yelp. The current promotion (7/2020) when we checked in was that two people from the same party had to check in on Yelp in order to get one free appetizer. We did so we got a freebie. It was a really good chili con queso. In addition, we both had two tacos each. I had a brisket taco and the original taco. My wife had the blue corn chicken taco and the shrimp taco. We enjoyed them immensely. It was plenty of food as we arrived hungry but not starving. Overall, we were quite impressed. It was a really good meal and not overly expensive. Side note: It is owned by the former bass player from the band Little Big Town, Steve Dale (this fact has zero influence on the rating). Bottom line - We were pleasantly surprised with our overall experience of eating Mexican food outside the state of Texas. The New Mexico Mexican restaurant was very good. After our original plans fell through, we visited on NYE without a reservation and were graciously seated immediately. The room flickered with the lights from the candles as music was playing in the background. A friend of mine has been suggesting this place for years. I had no idea what to expect other than that they have awesome sopapillas and that the food is great. I finally got the chance to come here and I am glad I did. This place is like an upscale Mexican restaurant. They bring out salsa and chips in a little bowl and basket that they replace with more as needed. I was surprised at first but the salsa is so thick and rich that you don't need as much on each chip as you do as other places. Their Chile con Queso is free with every check in, as far as anyone can tell. My friend got the Huevos Rancheros and they were different than I've ever experience at a regular Mexican restaurant. I actually really liked the bites she offered me and it didn't upset my stomach. I would get it myself here. Hubby got one of the fajita steak's but neither of us were very impressed by it. I got some tacos and they were hit and miss. The Blue Corn Chicken is a specialty of theirs, if I remember correctly. It tasted ok but falls apart easily. I would have liked it better with more sauce. The Nashville Hot Chicken was pretty great. The sopapillas are free on your first visit. They are completely different than anywhere else. Usually, they're fried until they are crispy and you eat them with honey. Here, they are fluffed out like pillows and you can eat them with honey or chocolate, or get both. We got both. We didn't like them much. Our waitress, Cat, was excellent and very attentive. We had had bad service elsewhere the previous day so she was a breath of fresh air. We had a great time here and would definitely return. Tried it for the first time and it was very good.. We had the shrimp quesadilla and shrimp fajitas and both did not disappoint. They also know how to make a great drink .. I asked for Tito's and grapefruit juice and our server Tina I believe was her name and hopefully I'm right, suggested fresh grapefruit muddled in which is way better. I am from New Mexico and I've been looking for an authentic place for 13 years! We found this little gem in Tennessee and it is authentic and delicious. We started off with chips and salsa. The salsa was fresh and yummy. You could absolutely taste the lime, cilantro, and a hint of spicy. The chili, both green and red, has amazing flavor and made my nose run from the heat. I got the stuffed sopapilla and christmas chili (red and green). The staff was friendly, helpful, and attentive to my drinks and salsa. MAKE SURE YOU EAT THE DESSERT SOPAPILLAS. They are the best things on the planet. (With honey) I would 100% recommend this to anyone wanting to try New Mexican food. I feel like the consensus with those who've had "OK" experiences here, is that Sopapilla's has the potential to be so much better, and I totally agree, which is why I don't want to write them off quite yet. Thankfully when my husband and I dined here for our anniversary dinner on the patio, we had NO issues with service, which was surprising considering a lot of complaints are in regards to that - matter of fact service was quite delightful. Our waitress (she had a spanish accent) was pleasant, attentive, and gave us great recommendations for our meals. Furthermore, our meals did not disappoint. I ordered enchiladas and my husband, the chicken & sopapilla's. Both dishes were great, but his was so unique and the flavor combinations were fantastic! Okay, now you're wondering why after such a great introduction, would I give them less than 4-5 stars. It's because they butchered two different cocktails my husband ordered. Not being able to enjoy drinks you're treating yourself to for a celebratory night, can be a game changer. He ordered a Negroni and the server had never heard of it before (which is okay), and said she'd ask the bar to make sure they could make it. She confirmed they could but the drink served was a mystery to us. The bartender should have just been up front about not being able to make it. My husband sent it back and played it safe (so he thought) by ordering an Old Fashioned instead, which is on their cocktail menu, and again, what came out was another mystery, the cocktail was clear and it should be a caramel color. We very well could have come on an off night for drinks but sometimes you don't want to risk it if you have faithful staples elsewhere. read more

Tried out the brunch option for the first time, I believe they offer it on Sundays only. Overall option wise it has plenty of breakfast type foods to choose from. My son liked the biscuits and gravy and I enjoyed the omelet bar where they cook omelets to order. They also cook pancakes to order and offer other breakfast items such as bacon, french toast, and potatoes. There is a smattering of lunch items such as sliders, tamales and fried chicken. Service however struggled most likely due to not enough staff. It was hard to get refills and the plates stacked up fairly high. Overall for breakfast type foods I would recommend. If you are expecting it to be complimented with lunch items this wont meet your needs. For the area, Franklin, it's a good breakfast option. read more

My husband liked his Huevos Rancheros, but I got the Dos Tacos (fried taco and SoCal fish) with the pinto beans. The beans were so old, and terrible tasting, and the fried taco had a huge piece of fat/veins/artery inside of it that after I pulled it out, left nothing inside the taco. My son asked for a bean/cheese burrito, but unfortunately they had the same old refried beans inside. So bummed, saw they do brunch on Sundays and really wanted to come back for that but sadly, won't go back after tonight's dinner. read more

Always super consistent quality. Excellent salsa and the stuffed sopapilla is the best you'll get east of Albuquerque. We could easily excuse the slowish service on a Saturday afternoon because of the quality of our meals and the current staffing situation that is affecting everyone. A co-worker and I had a fabulous lunch at Sopapilla's today. Service was great, lots of parking, no wait to be seated at noon. This restaurant offers a nice option to anyone working in Brentwood who may need a break from the usual lunch spots. Today we had the tableside guacamole (I forgot to take a photo but it was excellent!), the enchiladas del mar (filled with lobster, crab, and shrimp), and the grilled fish tacos. We went to order take-out for four adults, and were fine with having a cocktail while we waited for the food. And that's what we articulated to the host and the bartender/server to whom we were handed off by the host. All very well handled. Then the attitude of the bartender spoiled it all. She was somehow put out that she was asked by host to put in our takeout order and make us two cocktails. Mind you, there was only one other couple, and two assistant bartenders. Yet we remained invisible and had to ask to see if our order was ready (which it was...). On reflection, maybe 4 stars was too high - give it a try and you decide. And I'm not one to complain as I use to wait tables for years and understand all sorts of things can and will go wrong on a Saturday evening shift... With that said, we came by this evening and requested to sit outside. After 75min wait, we followed up to find our name had been sat previously...and yet we were still waiting. We waited for approximately 10min to be greeted before a server just brought us waters. No introduction or anything. Just can I get you a drink...I still don't know his name. I asked about a appetizer special, of which he admitted this was his first night (no problem there) and he asked someone else to get the info. He figured it out. We got a queso that I believe normally comes garnished. No garnish. Small detail...oh well. It was tasty. At this point, we waited a bit more to order. In the meantime I asked the hostess if we could get one of the heaters turned on next to us. She said she'd get it taken care of...unfortunately that never happened. Maybe she forgot...maybe it doesn't work. But after waiting 75min or so to sit outside and it now being chilly, I'd prefer the heater. Server returned and we ordered food - a braised chicken quesadilla and three tacos with a GREEN CORN tamale on the side. We enjoyed the ambiance and our queso and chips. Food arrived with a normal amount of time but unfortunately no green corn tamale. I asked the guy bringing out our food, and he said he'd find out about it. They had forgotten or something. And I wasn't upset, just simply disappointed that the restaurant that I had waited 90min to begin getting food cooking and had specifically gone to for the green corn tamale had forgotten and not even apologized. So the meal continues, and we finished eating...with a chicken quesadilla that was lack of any flavor that's quite contrary to Sopapilla's normal standards. Literally tasted like the chicken had no seasoning. Upon us having finished eating, the tamale finally showed up. The server who brought it realized that it was suppose to be brought it with our entree and said he was gonna talk to a manager about getting it taken care of on our bill. I thanked him. No manager ever stopped by. So I tasted the supposed "green corn tamale" and I mentioned to my girlfriend that I think this is the pork tamale. But didn't say anything because the experience has been up to par in terms of lack of attention to details for the evening. We ask for boxes and get our food ready to go. So sure enough our check arrives and it says pork tamale....like I thought. Unfortunate. I paid and we've left. Unfortunately from the lack of apologizing for losing our table, to being seated at a not clean table, and no greeting from our server, to no heater turned on (and maybe it was a broken one...so no assumption there) and then the tamale mistake...it seems like a very lack luster experience at a restaurant I use to love. Don't get me wrong, the food is flavorful at times. The experience was forgettable. Which is sad...b/c I use to go out of my way for this place. Covid must have them struggling. read more

Light and flavorful. Best we've found in the area. Salsa was good (although a hair spicy) and the queso was nice and thick. Too many restaurants serve runny glop that won't stay on your chip. Wife got a chicken quesadilla. She enjoyed it and it was big enough that she took half home. She ordered some side guacamole to go with it; seemed to over-weighted with cilantro. I had the chili relleno dish. I was concerned that it was only a single chili, but it came piled high with (cotilla?) cheese and lots of chicken. It was filling. The pepper was fairly spicy (compared to others I've had) but that may have just been the individual pepper. In any event, it made the delicious margarita even better. There was also an accompaniment of grilled zucchini slices and asparagus spears. They were done just right and really lifted the meal. I would suggest that they offer a small container of white sauce as the dish did seem a bit dry towards the end.) I left a detailed Google review, but where I can't paste it onto here I'm going to shorten my story. Essentially I came here on May 5th 2023 at 9PM with my friend. We were seated fairly quickly, food was alright, ambiance was decent. (Just included that last one cause Yelp requires it) After taking ONE bite of my food, a HUGE cockroach at the speed of light crawls all over our table. I'm freaking out, and then it crawls onto my friends plate. A waitress walks by, we tell her and she runs off as if she knows exactly the problem. A manager comes up, offers us food on the house because they know about the roach problem and that it's from "construction" next door and there aren't any in the kitchen. She takes us to the other side of the restaurant, forces us to sit down and is trying to get us to calm down. Honestly in her situation, I'm sure it was awkward. She was nice. But after looking more into this restaurant and reading more reviews on Google, I've seen a pattern of previous employees leaving detailed reviews about being disgusted and seeing gross things while there. I'll attempt to add a picture as an example. I honestly just want the public to be aware because I have never experienced something so creepy in my life. Went here for patio drinks and dinner with a coworker after hours. This spot is really cute. When we arrived there was about a 30 minute wait for patio dining and there were about 8 people waiting to get seated ahead of us. We were able to go ahead and get a seat at the bar and order apps and drinks there before getting seated. Outside service was a little slow but once they acknowledged us it was much faster. Someone else outside sitting near us also had to go inside to see if someone would be out to help them. It was busy, so maybe they were a little overwhelmed. The seating isn't anything special but all of the twinkling lights and the heaters were pretty at night. The food, quac, and queso was good. Margs were really good too. If you are looking for traditional Mexican food, you may want to look elsewhere. This place is very unique. I don't know of another restaurant in the area quite like it. The food here is very spicy!! I just went for the second time yesterday. The first time I went I got the shrimp and grits and this last time I got the sopapillas platter. The shrimp and grits here was definitely amazing! It definitely had some kick and spice to it. I didn't really care for the beef enchilada that came on the platter because I wasn't a fan of the sauce. The blue corn crispy taco was delicious though. Both times I have gotten the green corn tamale and I have to say, it's probably the standout dish at this restaurant that I have had. It is so flavorful and it you can tell it was handmade right there in the kitchen at the restaurant. All of this food is fresh, fresh, fresh! There are no jarred salsas or pre-packaged foods here. My husband got the steak and chicken fajitas and he said they were some of the best he ever had. Do not skip the guacamole! There is a reason everyone had guacamole on their table.
