Sophia knows how to style my hair, both cutting and coloring. I live in China and some times travel to California for business or visiting friends. The first time I went to Sophia's salon was in 2014. She suggested me to do highlight, which was not so shining and matched my overall appearance. It turned out to be very good. The second time I went there was August 2015. Sophia high-lighted my hair with 3 colors. I sat with Sophia for 4 hours and my hair turned out to be great. Almost everyone saw me agreed that I had big change with my new hairstyle. This October I came here again and had hair cut. Sophia and her sister Jennifer designed a new style for me again. I think all ladies agree that a good hairstyle, no matter cutting or coloring, helps a lot to change the appearance and the first impression onto people. Sophia is good at both cutting and coloring. HOLY MOTHER! I've been here once, twice, but THIRD time's a dealbreaker... (0 stars for the simple fact that I could've done a better job at home) Cut, color and condition... Is that too much to ask? I didn't know I'd get a side order of split ends, breakage, and dry/brittle overprocessed hair to match. I'm spending a load of money to feel fancy, not to look like I just dipped my hair in toxic waste. First time, it was great. Second time, charged me more and hurt my scalp throughout the entire process. Third time, OH HELL NO... Please believe I will not be back this time. She doesn't really have a set price list, but sort of just throws numbers at you when it's time to pay. And while the prices get more expensive, the experiences and quality of the job would only get worse. And yes, like all the other Yelpers said, she's CONSTANTLY on the phone and eating while she's doing your hair job, in between jobs, touching your hair, etc. THE REAL DEALBREAKERS: STRIKE ONE: I asked for red hair with highlights but I ended up with light brown hair and platinum blonde highlights. STRIKE TWO: I was at the salon for 4 hours and wondered why she only finger-combed my hair during styling (they're supposed to at least comb it) and seemed like she was almost afraid to touch it during blowdrying. Made me suspicious, leading to... STRIKE THREE: I'm very laid back when it comes to me hair so I said whatever, thinking everything was cool (SILLY ME) and although I was pretty shocked when she told me the total, I still paid and tipped accordingly OOH, if only I knew then what I know now) so I get home and I've NEVER had this happen to me before- but I was brushing my hair and I wondered why it felt so rough and hard to run the brush through. Oh, it's because it's breaking and falling out during brushing because she totally over-processed my hair. And I'm pretty sure she knew it, but didn't do anything to condition or try to repair it after the damage was done. DID SHE REALLY THINK I wouldn't notice? Well I did. All I have to say is .... my BEAUTIFUL healthy hair ... GONE!! She totally FRIED my hair ... now it's a damn frizzy mess!! She BLEACHED the HELL out of it ... I didn't ask for YELLOW hair ... she suggested my hair was too BLACK and I should lighten it ... OK ... lighten it ... YES .... turn it YELLOW BROWN? NO!! Seriously had to walk around with a cap for a month until I was able to get it cut and re-colored. (See review on MyStylist). I would give this place a 0 Stars If I can do it, Unfortunately it won't allow me. First of, Sophia opened the Salon 35 minutes late, Disorganized, was running around the places trying to charge her cell phone, Answering Phone calls and talking to the customers for a lengthy time. Sophia used the Razor First all over the back of my hair instead of cutting it first with a Scissor! The place is very Dirty and her Two Assistants which is one of them is her sister are Both Incompetent. She always had to Help both of her Assistants to finish the job that they started. Which left me of course waiting for Sophia to finish cutting my hair. No organization, a Very Dirty Place that left me with rashes on my back and my chest! the next day. i went to sophia's salon by a friend's recommendation after i had a highlight done at a salon mall turned out too bright. I wanted my highlight to be darker or toned down.She colored my hair over and assured me that my highlight would still show and it will blend more to my new hair color. Oh Sophia. Dear dear Sophia. I absolutely adore her! I've been getting my hair cut by her since I was the age of 5, I am now 18 years old and in college. She knows what I want whenever I come in. I'm only speaking on behalf of what my experience has been with her and I have absolutely nothing negative to say about her. She works really quickly, and is very understanding towards what you want when it comes to male haircuts. I don't know about hair dye or any of that other stuff, however. I've only gone here for cuts. Her price has stayed consistent since she moved over and made her own salon. Her salon can get a little bit messy, which is why I'm not giving her a 5 star rating. I definitely have only ever gone to Sophia for my haircuts and I love her for it. She has seen me grow up as I have seen her salon blossom. I have been going to Sophia Salon to get my hair cut for over a year. I have been happy with the results of my hair cut everytime I go there. I usually will have Sophia's sister, who is one of the hair stylist there cut my hair and she does a wonderful job. She will take the time to do it right and time is not an issue with her. She does not do a speed cut like Super cut usually do with their customer but will take the time to cut your hair base on the way it look best on you. IMHO, you should not always believe on what you read, especially if its fabricated and fictional and just a way to hurt very reputable business like Sophia Salon in Daly City, Skyline plaza. These girls are just so incredibly helpful! It was my senior prom, and I needed a good hairdresser to do up my hair for the big night. My junior prom was a complete disaster in terms of hair, and I ended up looking like crap for the occasion. I decided to go over to Sophia to have my hair done. We did a trial run, and I showed her pictures and she and the other women working in the salon really did try their best to replicate the photos that I had shown them. Hair looks great, leave happy. I come in the next week the afternoon of prom, and they do my hair. It looked great, but it was not what we went over during our trial run. This didn't upset me at all, seeing as I was looking pretty damn hot regardless and my hair was pulled to the right side like I asked because of the way my dress was constructed. I went to Sophia for a haircut, color and highlights and was so very frightented for the condition of my hair and scalp that I feel a moral duty to inform fellow yelpers. First of all, the place is not the least bit hygenic, not even sure if they separate the clean brushes/combs from the used ones. Secondly, Sophia and her assistants eat (touch food) and then go right back to cutting and styling lients' hair. My haircut was lopsided, and my highlights were concentrated on one side of my head because Sophia and her assistants had lost interest in my hair by the time they had worked to the other side of my medium lenghth hair. I used to go to Sophia when she works at Hair Designer's next door. At first she is doing a good job, but lately my haircut and color is getting worse. There is one instance that i have to go back to her like 2 or 3 times to fix the color she did to my hair and hair cut. she is going to cut and color your hair really fast (some people like that style, not me!) but you'll go home with hair color on/in your ear, haircut is crooked. Her sister is the worst stylist ever, i don't even know how she got a hair dresser license. most people that goes to them are guys. read more

I am sorry to hear about all the bad experiences. I am a dude so I get a pretty basic cut, but I've been coming here for years and it's one of the best and cheapest haircuts I've ever had. I used to get $45 haircuts in SF at hipster places playing techno music in the background, and those haircuts were actually not as good as the $15 ones I get here. I just moved to Union City and am so addicted to how amazing my hair looks, I just drove there today for a cut and it look's great! Now the bad, I suggest calling ahead and showing up right on time. When they have a bunch of people getting hair-coloring and you drop in the wait can suck. I think one problem may be the language barrier. I only get my cut from Sophia btw, so I can't vouch for the other stylists. She has a pretty heavy accent so some of these disasters may have come from a communication gap, just a possibility. It is also the most crowded and fucking annoying parking lot I've ever been in, but that's not really in their control. It's also kinda small and you wait in plastic chairs that aren't super comfortable. If you want the whole fancy salon experience this is not the place. It's all about the cut and the cost. Bottom line: I have been going for years and I will continue to. It's a consistent, stylish men's cut at a very cheap price. It looks salon not Supercuts. read more

Sophia is a great hairstylist. I've been going to her even before she had her own salon. She used to work at the salon next door but once there was an opening lot next door she decided to open her own salon. My parents first brought me here when I was still young and now her salon looks very nice and up to date. She advices you about your hair and tells you what condition its in and what you can do to make it better. My parents come here to get their hair dyed even though that my dad is allergic to regular dyes; Sophia uses a special type of dye that can work with his hair and not affect his allergies. Her prices are not expensive and pretty decent. It's easier to set up an appointment even if it's an hour before you choose to come in. Normally her place is very busy and people wait around even if it might take long. Also, they offer makeup & permanent tatoos just ask her if she can refer you. read more

I have been getting my hair cut by Jennifer and Sophia since before Sophia opened up her own shop (circa 2003). For the last 5-6 years, Jennifer has been cutting my hair and couldn't be happier. What I like most is that Jennifer knows how I like my hair cut. So there's little need to going to detail explaining things prior to the scissors clipping. Reading all the older reviews, I think Sophia needs to be recognized more for what she does. She is by far the best stylist I've had because she listens to what you want and gives her expert advise. I have gone to many stylist where they are so eager to begin the process that they barely listen to what their customer wants and tends to rush you out of their salon. This is not the case with Sophia. She takes her time and does not rush the process. She's meticulous and gives the best haircuts. She also fixed my highlights that had gone wrong at a different salon. The best part about her is, you can tell that she loves what she does. I am inlove with my hair now because of Sophia. I went to Sophia's Salon because I wasn't happy with the barber I've been using for the last few years. He used to cut my hair inside of the Salon and that's when I first saw Sophia giving some nice looking haircuts while I waited. Today I decided to switch barbers and just walked in without an appointment, thinking Monday might be slow. When I told her how I would like my hair to look, I felt that she instinctively knew what I meant. She worked quickly, but I never felt rushed. I really appreciated that she stopped occasionally to show me the progress and make sure we were on the same page. We were. It was the best cut I've had in years. I went here to get a body wave. Nice enough people, but after my services, I got a REALLY REALLY bad chemical burn on my neck . I had to go to Urgent care and get some topical treatment for it. Urgent care asked if they changed the towels and dressings protecting my neck, and the answer was a big NO. They did not change it once. I will never ever ever ever go back to this place. Ever. Beware. Also worth mentioning - the day I had my perm done, two people who had gotten a haircut a day before came back to have their haircuts redone because they noticed things about the haircut that were uneven (her layers were not even on both sides) . I needed a haircut bad, so I went to this salon for a hair cut (my usual stylist was out of town so I resorted to this salon...I regret not waiting). I got the worse haircut experience in my life! The stylists take turns cutting your hair, eating on the sidelines , shred your hair with a razor, claw at your head and hair, and fail to pay attention to the customers' requests, no exaggerations here. Sophia herself cuts my hair, my wife told me that it is the best haircuts I've ever had. I told Sophia what I wanted, she listened and did exactly that. She always does a great job by me. I can tell she has a lot of experience cutting hair and she cares if you are satified. She has a lot of faithful happy customers, her shop has a constant flow of customers coming in and out.
