Okay, I'll admit I partially checked this place out for the name (and the good Yelp reviews). I got lost trying to walk here from the zoo (it was not obvious on my map that Calvert Street and Connecticut Avenue are bridges that go OVER Beach Drive) and probably walked an extra mile or so. I think it was worth it though. I had a sesame bagel with lox cream cheese. It was good, but the amount of salmon in the cream cheese seemed stingy. I could barely taste it. Maybe I'm just extra picky because I'm from Seattle and we have awesome salmon here... but the smoked salmon shmear at Einstein Brothers (formerly Noah's) Bagels is way more flavorful. There's no indoor seating, but there's a small bench outside where you can eat. It was about 90 degrees outside and my cream cheese was melting. I had to eat fast so it wouldn't all drip out. Still, it was cheap and the bagel itself was very tasty. It was nice to stop at a place a bit "off the beaten path" after seeing all the museums and monuments for days on end. Good place to go if you want to feel like a local :) ~3.5 stars but I'm rounding it up to 4 because I did really enjoy that bagel. read more

Note: This is a review of their sandwiches ONLY! I also got some fresh ground coffee, but have yet to try it so that is not included in the review. Pricing here is fair and honest, my turkey and avocado sandwich only cost me $6.50, so that is definitely a plus! As for the sandwich, it was pretty underwhelming considering this is a deli. I personally felt as if there was not enough meat on the sandwich, especially in ratio to the overwhelming amount of bread (mine was on an Italian roll.. Which was super doughy and not that great.) Also asked for it toasted, but the sandwich was cold. Thought they might have just forgotten, but there were some minor toast marks on the inside.. So I guess the toasting was just subpar. Might try this place again for bagels.. Since that is what most of these reviews are on. But on the plus side the coffee selection was extensive and everything smelled amazing. I love a good, local hole-in-the-wall, and this place is it. Pros: -Family run, extremely friendly staff. -Pastrami/corned beef is delicious, as is the tuna. Get it on rye! -breakfast sandwiches are delicious, particularly on a croissant -feels like walking into an old-school deli, with chachkies and assorted items like chips and cookies lining the shelves -bagels are very good (everything bagel/sesame seed = best options) Cons: -If you are big on "well-toasted" bread or bagels, this is not the place for you. "Double toasted" will not yield a well-toasted carbohydrate. -The place is small, and deliberately not an assembly-line style setup, so it will take a minute to get your meal. They have delicious brunch sandwiches and a small deli selection of pasta salads, potato salad, etc. Their chip selection- an essential part of any sandwich experience- is also decent. Their scallion cream cheese is fresh, and the scallion flavor is given a chance to permeate the rest of the cream cheese. Their smoked salmon bagel will fill you up for hours. Get a smoked salmon bagel WITH scallion cream cheese and experience one of the great pleasures in life. This review is about the bagel sandwiches. They are not good. I had an everything bagel with egg, cheese, and turkey bacon. Bagel was pretty dry and didn't taste fresh, which it should have been since I picked it up at 7:15am. The eggs were the biggest turn off as they were sort of grey in color and didn't taste great. Never had grey eggs before so not sure what that's all about. Cheese was fine. Turkey bacon was probably microwaveable turkey bacon from the freezer section of the grocery store. He then storms outside accusing me asking why I didn't say anything! He then returned, called to the back for a new order and I stepped back outside. A few minutes later he comes back out with a few orders in hand. Gives me mine last and loudly and confrontationally states "don't ever talk to me like that again" to which I am ASTONISHED. I didn't make a mistake - you did! And when you got in my face three times and I remained calm - you showed your true self. A hateful racist child that is very upset with his current life. He got in my face ready to fight me on the sidewalk over a bagel order that he screwed up! So apparently I'm not welcome back either. And that's OK. Yummm! We went here for lunch after seeing the yelp reviews. Definitely worthy of the great reviews. I got the rare roast beef sub, the bread was so fresh and almost a cross between a sub roll and a croissant; Absolutely delicious! The roast beef was high quality and very flavorful. The fresh lettuce and tomato was piled high on the sandwich just like I like it. It was a great lunch. The only downside was there is no seating to eat there, but there is 1 very small bench out front we sat and ate our sandwiches. They have assorted pastries and bagels too that looked good, but we didn't get any. read more

Came in today for the first time. The bacon egg and cheese bagel was great, very NY style, it was chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside. And the iced coffee was very good too. Boyfriend had an Italian sub, which was very good also, although the bread did not seem quite as fresh as the bagel. I'm sure they get shipments every day/every other day so it's hard when you don't make in house. This is your standard local deli with moderately priced sandwiches. If Stachowskis in Georgetown is the gold standard, 5-star deli this is definitely just average. I've been here a few times when I'm craving a deli sandwich, and I'll definitely go back but the flavor, portions, and price are all average. I've had the salmon and roast beef with garlic herb cheese (pictured) and they're good but nothing I couldn't easily make at home if I wasn't lazy. Having now been for breakfast and lunch, I can confidently give this place 5 stars. Breakfast bagel sandwiches are a necessity after a night out on 18th street, and they come cheap with no frills, just the way a bagel should be. Egg and cheese or a little cream cheese and boom, you're back in the game. Their iced coffee is no joke as well. For lunch, you can't go wrong with any of their sandwiches but the corned beef or pastrami options are absolutely delicious. I wanted a third half. The place can get a little hectic on the weekends, so I just call ahead with my order and by the time I walk there, it's done. I am only basing this review on the food that I get. Usually I call ahead and order a sausage, egg, and cheese, on a croissant. This sandwich comes nicely wrapped, heat retained relatively well and the croissant came out warm, buttery, and flakey. It comes out to around $6, which is reasonable. The staff doesn't fuck around, they want you to order, pick-up, and get the fuck out. They are always on their game, so respect them, and move efficiently. I'm playing this out like they're rude, but they're not, the entire staff is extremely respectful, just be conscious of their urgency, and leave a tip! I'm only taking a star off for it being cash only. Come on, it's 2016. But this place gives me a hella good reason to stack my quarters and use my spare change here. read more

It is Sunday morning, and I am waking up to the sound of a bus releasing its hydraulic bowels in order to let passengers leave drift in from outside the window of my friend's living room in Adams Morgan. The air around me smells like cheap whiskey and slightly of vomit laced with the iron crust tang of dried blood. I open my eyes and peer dimly through the kind of hangover than F. Scott Fitzgerald would have laid down and closed his eyes for, and realize that the smell of whiskey, vomit, and blood is in fact myself. There are worse realizations to make on a Sunday morning - perhaps you forgot to grab this week's Barron's publication from your stoop and now your neighbor will have happily absconded with it to peruse as he eats a sleeve of fig newtons. Perhaps you realize, idly, that you are in bed with someone you should not be in bed with for a variety of reasons that will become more clear as your memory also becomes more clear. Life, in all of it's expansive possibility, is laughing at us. The choices we make are infinite and yet we invariably choose to self destruct - to die, willingly, and generally for nothing much more than a promise or a pair of beautiful eyes set like agate in the idol of a cult. I sit up and look over at my friends - also collapsed in various ungainly positions on couches in the living room. We are all awake. We are all hungover. We all look like we went 12 rounds with joe walcott and barely made it past the 7th before taking a beautiful cross counter 1 minute into the 12th that colored our memories red with white stars. Welcome to fucking America. We all want sandwiches. So's Your Mom is maybe the best goddamn deli in the city, and perhaps on the eastern seaboard. This counts Sunny and Annie's up on 7th and A in NYC, an establishment that has known my presence in remarkably similar situations. We shuffle, awkwardly, to So's Your Mom, and squint over the extensive menu. I do not know why we do this. Perhaps nobody does, but it is a thing that is done, by all of us. We know what we are going to order and we have known from the moment we woke up. This is a thing buried finger deep in humanity, and it cannot be removed. The breakfast sandwiches are huge, and greasy, and delicious. For the normal sandwiches, the meats are fantastic and sliced thin enough to be used as bandages. The vegetables are fresh, and the combinations offered take advantage of meat synergies. The lox is to die for, if you are a salmon. A Deli is just a Deli in the same way that a gun is just a gun until it's loaded. When I'm loaded, So's Your Mom isn't just a Deli anymore, it's a goddamn mecca towards which we bow in thanks for the best damn sandwiches in the city. You should really go there, and maybe buy a vitamin water too, I hear those things have electrolytes. read more

I should disclose that my parents were the owners of this deli for the last 15 years so I might be a little biased. All I want to say is that they tried their best to serve the freshest and tastiest food to their customers and I think they did a pretty good job of succeeding. Growing up eating sandwiches (and getting sick of them) and working as a buyer for the gourmet foods industry, I must say that I have yet to eat a sandwich that comes close to the ones sold here. Just an fyi, but they are opening a new deli in the Palisades area (Palisades Deli), so if anyone lives there or is around that area, stop on by and get the same tasty egg sandwiches, lox on bagels, and turkey avocado as this location. Somewhere along the line, I became super Asian. Most people eat sandwiches for weekday lunches. I bring in a Ms. Bento. Today's lunch is yaki onigiri, ebi mayo and miso soup. Yesterday I had brown rice with braised bok choy, tofu and mushrooms, and miso soup. My handy Ms. Bento tote ("Obento: Anywhere you go, enjoy the warm meal") also contains a small bag of cherries and a credit-card sized pink Hello Kitty tupperware, which in turn contains two whole wheat fig newtons. For me, sandwiches are a weekend treat when I just can't be arsed to cook. I know--what? It's because I can't eat sandwiches. More specifically, I can't eat bread. I eat rice, and various soy-based products, which means I am only a few months away from karaoke and photos with peace signs. Which, if you check out my Facebook photos, I have already done. But "ironically." That said, So's Your Mom has become a Saturday post-yoga ritual. I say ritual, but it's really only been two weeks in a row. I have been tucking a $5 bill into my keyring, before going off to indulge in 75 minutes of laboured contortion, and then I stop by So's Your Mom to get a sandwich to eat in the park. Every week it is a BLT, because it costs $4.50 + 10% tax = $4.95, and is the only non-breakfast sandwich I can get for less than five bones. It's a pretty good sandwich but then I remember that it involves: 1) frying bacon 2) slicing tomatoes 3) toasting bread 4) mayo 5) assemble and wrap. So it's really hard to screw up. Grabbed an egg salad sandwich here one morning. Very tasty and very fast. They've got a large list of sandwiches on a board on the wall that I'll probably find myself working through on subsequent visits. All seemed reasonably priced at $4-5 dollars. The packaged food they sell on the shelves, not so reasonably priced. Is a jar of Nutella really worth $8? Well, maybe. But I'm not buying it. If your previous week was way too crazy, and you're pretty sure the next one will be as well (we are in The District, here, after all) then this is just the thing to center yourself before plunging headlong into the insanity that is your work life.
