I was at work and my generous boss brought in a bag of bagels, which were soft on the inside and chewy on the outside. Somebody asked, "Hey, bagels! Awesome! Where'd you get these bagels?" And he said, "So's your mom." And we said, "...excuse me?" But, it turns out, he wasn't just being ornery. So's Your Mom has excellent bagels, a fine selection of sandwich toppings, tempting displays of condiments (how I love condiments), and a friendly, neighborhood feel. The best time to go is on a weekend morning when everyone's out with their kids, dogs, significant others, and Washington Posts. It's warm and fuzzy. I've had a few types of sandwiches here, always with avocado, always delicious, and always stuffed with good sandwich fixings. No skimpy sandwiches here! No bites of plain bread! But no, back to the condiments. They have pickles and anchovies and marmalade and pesto in a fancy European tube. They have mustard and jellies and olives. They have LU cookies (and if you don't know what that is, they are only the BEST packaged cookie in the whole world.) They have crackers and capers. This, for me, is impulse-buy heaven. ...Yes, my impulse buys are usually capers and fancy mustard. What's your point? There's no seating, so be prepared to take-out. And pay in cash. So's Your Mom is quite possibly one of the biggest underground gems in the city. They are arguably the best sandwich makers in DC. My favorite observation about their sandwiches: the avocado slices are ALWAYS perfectly ripe and delicious. I'm obsessed with avocados, so this is a major plus for me. So's Your Mom also has all kinds of groceries and foods that are hard to come by in a conventional grocery store. Everything from exotic jams to imported European chocolates. The service is always super-prompt and very friendly. The owner was telling me yesterday that he plans on eventually making bagels from scratch -- I can't wait for that. New Yorker reporting. Since my move to D.C. I've had the displeasure of finding out that this city can't do several things right - things like a decent subway system, pizza by the slice, or breakfast. However, I stumbled upon this place one hungover sunday and I've been picking up breakfast from them very frequently. WHere to start - the joint is pretty small by D.C. standards (but is basically a mansion by NYC standards), and boasts a deli that usually has 2-3 people working. Just like home, it's assumed you can think of what you want between two pieces of bagel, and will stand around and wait while they make it. I usually pop over next door to teh health food place, go to the wine shop, or look at pictures of cats on my phone so I don't have to make eye-contact with the other denziens of adams morgan who haven't become real people until they've had breakfast. The food is solid. The bagels are the only acceptable ones I've had since leaving home. They're kinda small (like an H&H on 14th st), but the texture is right, and they pack it with an irresponsible amount of cream cheese - just as god intended. The lox is very good, and my friends have told me the pastrami doesn't suck. Cash only. Oh, and they have those Tate's cookies which are basically crack for anyone from Long Island. read more

So's your mom is my favorite deli in the DC area! You might walk right by this place, thinking that 's it's just another random creepy liquor store with barred windows. But take a closer look, step inside and you will find a cute bustling little deli! Fresh bread, bagels, meats and coffee galore! My favorite sandwiches are the Pastrami (on rye with slaw and thousand island- AMAZING), the Veggie Pocket (every veggie you can imagine topped off with fresh fresh avocado) and the BLT with Avocado (on toasted wheat). Opposites I know- but it makes it clear that So's can do any type of sandwich right. I've tasted the pastries, but they have the made from the box vibe, so although they were yummy I wasn't super psyched on them. **4.5 stars** Who would have thought a place called So's Your Mom would be 1- a sandwhich shop and 2- an amazingly good sandwhich shop at that. I used to live nearby and would often visit SYM for my favorite: the tuna salad w/ spicy peppers w/ swiss on rye. The turkey avacado is a close second favorite. Although, it's just a personal choice: anything you get here, will be made with the best quality meats, cheeses, bread and veggies. The 'whiches are stacked too, so I often eat one half and save the other. The owners are super friendly and you're in and out in five minutes. Just be sure to have cash on you, as they are cash only sadly. Luckily for me, there's a Bank of America right next door. Also has a nice variety of pastries, muffins and snacky items like chips and salsa, etc. Good beverage selection as well. read more

As good as it gets. They are known for their egg and cheese sandwich bagels. I usually just get the lox because I just love lox but when I can, I will get some sort of an egg and cheese sandwich (croissant) or dessert. This place is very cozy and the family who owns the place is extremely professional and hard working people. I've lived in this neIghborhood for almost a year and So's your Mom's makes me a happy camper pretty regularly. They have some of the best coffee I have ever had! They have delicious breakfast and lunch as well. I LOVE their bacon scallion cream cheese (not for the faint of heart) and on a toasty bagel it'll clear up a hangover in a minute! The breakfast sandwiches as well as the lox and the danish are also tasty breakfast choices you can't go wrong with. I don't usually mix it up when I get their sandwiches because the turkey BLT is just so good but I'm sure all the sandwiches are pretty legit. This place is definitely a bit eclectic (I don't believe they have changed the decor since the original owners decades ago) as it's cash only and you can't pay until your food is ready, but there are plenty of ATMs in this area so for those who are so complain-y, get over yourself and just enjoy the coffee! So's your Mom's is about a block away from Kalorama park and I love sitting in the sunshine while enjoying their coffee -- it makes for a pretty good morning/afternoon/whenever! read more

For me, a perfect springtime Saturday in DC involves grabbing sandwiches from So's Your Mom (my favorites: Italian Deluxe Sub, Salmon Bagel) and taking them to a picnic in Kalorama Park or Walter Pierce Park. We've been doing this since we lived in Adams Morgan and then Dupont, and now that we're in Cleveland Park we still make the trip. Not only are the sandwiches great, but they have all the additional necessaries: Funky beverages like ginger beer and Dr. Brown's, a wide selection of good potato chips, and little European cookies (Ana's Swedish Ginger Snaps, Pétit Ecoliers). I first moved to the neighborhood about a year ago. My bf swore by the coffee and service here and so I went. I'm a skeptic and hard critic by nature so listen up... I went in to buy bulk coffee here one day to surprise my bf who was on his way home. I ground up my coffee and waited in line only to realize THEY ARE CASH ONLY. They pointed me to an ATM outside which didn't accept my card for some reason. I could have walked 5 blocks to my bank but I started to get upset that a place this day and age won't accept CCs. I called my bf to see if he was close by in case he had cash...he wasn't. I was about to give up and walk the 5 blocks to the ATM but I guess they overheard or were just sick of seeing me and asked me if I live in the neighborhood. I said, yes, and they said why don't you just take the coffee and pay us next time you are here. I was in shock. They let me take the coffee and then next time I went back (a day later) I paid them. We go here probably 1-2 times per month and yes it can get crowded at times, but they take care of you in ways that I didn't think still existed. If I ever have to move, I won't miss too much about AdMo (maybe Lil Fountain Cafe and Mintwood) but I'll definitely miss SYM. read more

I was always the weird kid who loved liverwurst, and I never grew out of it. So's Your Mom allows me to indulge in my love of liver with various options, including excellent homemade chicken liver. You can mix-and-match just about anything and they don't get snarky with you. Want muenster instead of provolone even though the suggestion on the whiteboard says otherwise? No problem. The price of sandwiches is just right, the ingredients are always fresh (including the bread), the service is speedy, and the portions are just right. Bagels are the best around (much better than Crumbs and Coffee down the street), and there are all kinds of freshly-made sweets to appease all ages. What more do you want? They do not take credit cards, but their direct neighbor is a Bank of America ATM so it's no big problem (although I still wish they would take cards). read more

Was just at So's Your Moms today for lunch and decided to try the Smoked Salmon on bagel with cream cheese, onions, and capers and would have to say that I'm a fan. I usually get it at Tryst but they charge like $10 bucks for the same sandwich but you actually have to put it together yourself where So's Your Mom charges $6 and the sandwich is made for you. Easy choice right. I was talking to Yana about why do we like So's Your Moms. She likes the sandwiches, which is understandable because they are good but what is so special about them? There is no secret sauce or old family recipe. At least not the sandwiches that I get. I'll have to ask around and get other people's opinions. Maybe b/c its the only place of its kind besides Tryst that make sandwiches? My only complaint with this place is that it only takes cash. Now I can understand why they don't take credit cards with all the fees, but owning a small business myself I would think that this would lose you business. I don't know how a Korean family ends up running a New York-style jewish deli, and I don't care. As the other reviews have mentioned, great sandwiches. Great selection of cold cuts (especially Boar's Head products) and they do breakfast. They also have wonderful pastries and desserts in the front case (if you can see past the front freezer case full of Ben & Jerry's and Haagen Dasz). I highly recommend the macaroons. There's also a good assortment (although random) of some gourmet products (crackers, sauces and salsas, the odd sushi-accessory kit). And, if you need some chopped liver or potato salad, you can pick some here too, It's a great place to pick up sandwiches and cream sodas for an afternoon picnic. I don't know how to improve this place, so I'm giving it full 5-star credit. It's a simple, small bagel, croissant and sandwich shop. I got a breakfast bagel sandwich with egg, cheese and sausage and was pretty impressed. The croissants looked excellent. The street parking is easy. The service is fast. The shop is small and in addition to the sandwiches there is a limited grocery section that mostly features high end products that can be used for sandwiches. It's pretty nice and extremely clean. My only complaint: Cash ONLY. Also, the sandwich cost me $4.50 which is like $1 more than I wanted to pay, but whatevs. The bagels are not the number one, go out of your way, awesome to try one. My friend Lauren turned me onto this place and every time I go there, I am always extremely satisfied. It's a pretty cool shop, as is probably imaginable by the name "So's Your Mom" - not exactly your average joe-schmo sandwich shop title. It's run by a very friendly Asian family who manages to make this place feel like an Italian shop. They have a fantastic array of fresh bread (bagels, buns, etc.), delicious meats and cheeses, and an excellent choice of sandwiches and beverages (orangina, san pelligrino, etc.) this is a great little gem in the heart of adams morgan and I'd eat there a lot more frequently if it was closer to me. I've been eating about 4 of these a week and it's getting a little ridiculous now, so soon I'll have to deviate and update with other options. Big plus...they use Boar's Head brand meats and cheeses and have a healthy selection of breads. Don't be overwhelmed by the huge menu board looming above. While there is so much to choose from, it's all good, so little risk is involved. Need to do a little shopping while you wait? Does your list include: imported French cookies, hazlenut oil or anchovies? Look no further. This is the deli that every city neighborhood needs. I drag myself out of bed every weekend to visit, never disappointed. Don't be thrown off by the somewhat disorganized nature of the order/pick-up process. When you walk in, go straight up to the register and place your order with a member of the friendly family who owns the place. Mill around with the other customers and try to stay out of the way - they will call you when your order is complete and you can return to the register to pay. Their breakfast sandwiches are delicious - the bagels are from Bethesda Bagels. These aren't NJ/NY quality bagels by any means, but they do the trick. So's Your Mom fits the bill of a no-frills neighborhood deli, the kind that you see on every corner in old Italian neighborhoods in Manhattan, SF, Chicago...They make great sandwiches here, and there's a huge menu selection to choose from. The pastry counter is pretty decent too. Seems like most folks who gave this place low ratings were displeased with the bagels so I haven't had any. But sandwich-wise? This place rocks! They also have barrels and barrels of roasted coffee beans just waiting for you to select and grind to your heart's content. Definitely a good place to stock up or even to gift your caffeine-addicted friends. They only accept cash so make sure you've got a 20 in your wallet. If not, there's a BofA ATM right next door. They don't have seating either, so you have to take your sandwich to go. They have a wooden bench out front if you just can't wait to tear into your sandwich, otherwise there are parks nearby. The service is slow and it's a small place so you need guidance as to where to stand/order/pay and there aren't any indicators so I've been in there crammed next to people and not sure where I belong. The meats and cheeses are quality but over-priced just the same. The extra charge for avocado is ridiculous on your already expensive sandwich. I order white cheddar and am told that next time I can't have that on a sandwich. May I suggest then that you indicate which cheeses and meats you can have on a sandwich as opposed to the ones that are for takeout per pound only? Also, why are you so protective of your cream and sugar? I don't know the amount I will need in my coffee, I may need more or less sugar! And then I have to put the sugar in right there at the register anyway - but thanks for adding the cream? OH and here's the kicker - my sisters and I order bagels and they end up being dry as a bone. I gave this place one more shot by ordering the bagels with extra butter and still dry as a bone. So stingy with their condiments - are you guys doing that bad financially while charging $8-$9 for a plain old deli sandwich? Ever since Sid passed away and The Comet closed, So's Your Mom has been struggling to pick up the slack for the bagel-eating Adams Morgan minions. The bagels (from Whatsa Bagel) are good, although the SYM staff are skimpy on the cream cheese unless you ask -- and then they charge extra! Nevertheless, there is a small, steady queue on weekend mornings as people patiently wait for their bagels. If sandwiches are more your speed, then SYM should suffice with it's delicious deli fare. SYM also has a limited number of gourmet groceries available as well as various coffee beans that can be ground after purchase. read more

Three stars might seem harsh, especially when the food was DELICIOUS... but I've got to be honest, I didn't like how you wait in line to tell the cashier your order just to be pushed away to wait for your bagel for 15 minutes, listen to the cashier call your order as ready, and THEN pay for it. There isn't really a menu, but just ask for what you like and be specific. For example, I order and an everything bagel with ham and provolone cheese. I just assumed my bagel would be toasted, but you gotta ask for that. 2. The actual bagels are quite good. 3. It is conveniently located in Adams Morgan. Some downsides 1. The process is complicated. You order then stand around with everyone who looks like they are in line to order. You pay at the end when you get your food. Ok maybe it isn't that complicated, but there isn't a clear line and it is hard to hear when your order comes up. 2. Cash only. 3. It took a while to put some ham and cheese on my bagel that wasn't toasted or melted. I grew up in New York, and this place always reminds me a bit of my neighborhood bakery and deli: the Boars Head meats, the display case full of pastries, the Styrofoam-cup coffee. Any sandwich I have had from here is aways delicious. Their 1/2 corned beef and 1/2 pastrami is excellent...definitely a must try! I recently moved away from the Adams Morgan area, and So's Your Mom is without a doubt what I miss the most about living there. Their sandwiches are reliably fresh and delicious, and used to be my go-to for lazy Saturday and Sunday mornings. I typically made my own - turkey, avocado, havarti, and spicy mustard on rye - but also have tried some the sandwiches on their menu, including the bagel BLT, which is one of my favorites. Their potato knishes are hidden gems - I was blown away the first time I had one. Better than Union Market's Buffalo and Bergen, which supposedly specializes in knishes. The prices are very reasonable and the staff are very nice. If you're in Adams Morgan looking for an inexpensive, delicious lunch, this is without a doubt your best option. Thick slabs of feta (I hate thick slabs of cheese, and feta at that? Is it possible to eat that?). I picked most of it out and left a sprinkling. Also had tomatoes and cucumbers.
