We went for 'Date Night' dinner. My wife had been there before to meet friends, but this was my first time. We both ended up trying the Specials of the day, and both did not disappoint. Very tasty, with reasonable good size portions and not skimpy on the seafood. Great tasting Drinks that actually had alcohol in them! The staff here are genuinely wonderful -- the maître d' and our waitress were both fabulous. Service is clearly a strength. Unfortunately, the food was a major disappointment. The chicken piccata was completely bland -- no salt, no pepper, no lemon flavor, nothing. The angel hair pasta that came with it was overcooked and mushy. My dining companion ordered the walleye, which was equally tasteless. For a fish dish that should have bright, clean flavors, it fell completely flat. Had a great meal and everything hit the mark, including excellent service. The hash was standout -- fresh steak cooked medium rare and coarsely chopped, roasted veggies and potatoes, eggs, and a light cheese sauce that tied it all together. Absolutely delicious. The pastrami on rye was piled high as it should be, with a great horseradish sauce, and the sweet potato fries were excellent. A really satisfying meal all around -- highly recommend. read more

If I could have given six out of five, I would have to this business, which was one of the most amazing one these days. Not only the food for super delicious and it was not just my order which first fish fry but everyone in my group loved their food. We have not seen service like this in a long time the host and the manager or owner I'm not sure where making sure everything was perfect. Because of the heating Arizona shades were down. Nice place to eat. They have a brunch and dinner menu. We went for dinner and I appreciate they note which items are gluten free. Would love to come back and try their gf banana bread and cauliflower. We tried the ribs , pork, and a few seafood dishes. All were okay. The rubs were supposed to have a blueberry sauce but didn't quite get that taste. Best was the wide fries. Service was just okay. We took our annual holiday photos nearby, and posing really makes you hungry! We came in to replenish from all the glam and before we drove back to Mesa. The service was QUICK - the hostesses greeted us and seated us. Heather was our waitress, and she was so kind especially to my little one! Our breakfast was FILLING! Soul café is a neighborhood favorite. My family and friends have enjoyed this restaurant many times over the years. The service is always on point, and the atmosphere inside and outside are very enjoyable. They also allow dogs on the patio. Soul cafe was one of the only restaurants that could take our large party of 10 on a weekend day near the holidays. The restaurant space was open, used space well without overcrowding tables, and was very lovely with plants and wood decor intermixed for a fresh space. The staff were really great - our server Aresela was so so very nice and got everything for us so quickly. Our table has some picky people and everyone was well attended and happy with the service. The food was so so so yummy. Way tastier than anticipated and so fresh. The homemade salsas were very well made and roasted to perfection. The veggies and fruit were also fresh and full of flavor. Soul cafe is more than a cafe it is a restaurant that serves breakfast/brunch, lunch and dinner. We have been here before the updates and the updates are so great, give it a more modern vibe. The food was good, the service was ok. We sat with no silverware and then our son's food was delivered and we had to search for someone to get us silverware and napkins. When looking for our server we see him over by the bar just chatting it up with two other servers. We eventually got the hostess' attention and she got us a napkin and some silverware. Other than the ok service, the food is very good. Will come back and hopefully we have better service. read more

Cute brunch spot that serves brunch, dinner along with crafted cocktails. They also have HH Tues-Sat 2-6 pm only at the bar. For breakfast I would have to say that their prices were pretty steep but their portions are huge. I ordered the Mediterranean omelette, it was okay. My roommate order the 2 pancake plate and it was huge but the batter was okay, nothing special. Probably wouldn't be back here again, not in my budget to pay $18-$24 a plate for breakfast. Food: Come here for the food! It is top notch. The pancakes are some of the best I've ever had and they have an assortment of dishes that you don't get other places or have unique twists that are delicious. I brought my dad here for brunch because he loves the pancakes and they didn't disappoint. He got the 2 good 2 be true with lemon ricotta and bacon and blueberry pancakes. I shared the special of the day which was an applewood bacon and bourbon pancake with pecans with my stepmom who ordered the crazy cowboy. The pancakes were all fluffy and filled with a generous amount of ingredients. No skimping on the bacon or fruits here. My pancakes came with an apple compote that I used as a syrup and it was delicious without being overly sweet. The crazy cowboy is a good mix of flavors with a slight bit of heat from the green chilies but not overly so if you aren't a huge fan of spice. Drinks: I got the blueberry mimosa which had a small amount of syrup at the bottom to add the flavor which I loved because I hate when they overfill with the juice or sugary syrup. That tends to give me a headache. The coffeetini is the usual. The jalapeño bloody Mary was a bit spicy which is to be expected by she thought it was just a little too much of tomato juice flavor. Service was a bit slow and the table next to us had a hard time being seated. I think the table was too small for them and they struggled to cram in there which was awkward since there were two tables next to them that were empty and were later used for another party of the same size. It was very busy as usual which I don't mind but some people may consider it too loud and cramped. I prefer sitting at the bar if I'm alone. There is a nice patio that is shaded and under a cover, away from the street as well, when the weather is nice. read more

Deena did a terrific job taking care of us. I ordered the chicken, but somehow a fish dinner ended up at our table. These things happen, and what impressed me was how Deena handled it. She immediately took ownership of the situation, made it right without hesitation, and checked back several times to make sure everything was perfect. Throughout the meal she was friendly, attentive, and never let the mix-up affect our experience. Great service is about how you respond when something doesn't go as planned, and Deena exceeded our expectations. We'll definitely ask for her the next time we're at Soul Café. read more

We were here a couple of weeks ago as we have a new pup and needed a dog friendly patio. We were so pleasantly surprised by the food and service. I had the cod and my husband had the beef stroganoff. Both were excellent. The highlight for my husband was the blueberry pie. (I have a gluten allergy so I couldn't partake). He said it was one of the best pies he has ever had. Nice restaurant, but there's a really long wait on the weekends. I came here for breakfast with my mom and really enjoyed it, 100%. My only impression is that this place seems a bit overhyped, but they get a lot of business and people seem to like it, so maybe I'm just the odd one out. What I really appreciate is the staff. They understand the Arizona heat and do their best to get you seated quickly. My pancake was delicious, and I would order it again. It was different from what I've had before because mine had jalapeños in it, so it's not something I'd find just anywhere, but I was feeling experimental that day. This place was PHENOMENAL! I was recommended by a friend to come for their brunch and was insanely impressed by not only the amazing food but the amazing service that was provided when first entering as well as after being sat. When we first walked in the place was packed (Sundays are usually very busy times) and we were greeted by 3 lovely young ladies who quoted us about a 20 minute wait (but it was more like 10) after we got to the table we were taken care of with such grace and respect. I got the Jumbo Wet Burrito and it was so yum! My friend got a blueberry pancake and it was massive! The manager was very attentive and made sure all guests were well taken care of. As we were leaving it was still insanely busy however the hostesses made sure to wish us a good day with a smile on their face. Hello Everyone: This review is for a recent experience at Soul Cafe in Scottsdale, Arizona. My husband and I have been to this restaurant previously, but since we ordered different entrees than normal, I am posting this review as well. Ambiance: Soul Cafe is normally busy, starting with the Happy Hour crowd, so we usually go for dinner early into the night when the noise is "less" and we can talk at a normal level in the restaurant seating area. Service: We've had Lisa as our server a couple of times now and she always does a nice job. General Manager: Annamarie is the General Manager. She constantly circulates around Soul Cafe checking on everyone, helping process payments, keeping the flow going in both the bar and dining room area. She is very pleasant and we always enjoy our conversations with her. Regarding the Food: Salad: We ordered the Arizona Wedge Salad to split (based on previous visits, this is large enough to split). Cost: $16.00 The salad is an iceberg lettuce wedge, cherry tomatoes, avocado and jalapeño bleu cheese dressing topped with jalapeño bacon. I enjoy this salad because I like spicy food. For those of you who don't care for spicy food, I would recommend one of the other salads on the menu. This time the salad was served with quite a bit of dressing, perhaps too much (which had not happened in the past visits). Otherwise, it was as fresh and "crisp" as previous visits. Entrees: My husband ordered the Chicken Piccata at $24.00. The portion received was enough for dinner and then a small portion to take home for lunch. But, surprisingly he indicated the angel hair pasta was overdone and the chicken was tough (I noticed him "cutting" the chicken longer than should have been necessary for chicken). The chicken filet served was larger on one end and smaller on the other (not beat to the same thickness throughout prior to cooking), so this may explain why some of the chicken was tough. The sauce was nice, but the dish overall would have benefited from more sauce than was served because the sauce was on the chicken only as you can see from the photo. But, overall the flavor was nice, not too acidic. I ordered the Bison Short Ribs, a menu special for that evening at $42.00. This was served with blue cheese risotto and broccolini. The broccolini had a nice smoky flavor to it and was not overdone. My only complaint was it was served next to/on top of the blue cheese risotto, so everything on my plate tasted like blue cheese (since the meat was on top of the risotto as well). The broccolini would have benefited from being served on a side plate so I could have enjoyed the smoky flavor and perhaps even squeezed a little fresh lemon on top of it. The risotto was nicely done, perfect actually. The blue cheese flavor was just enough (not overpowering). Regarding the Bison Short Ribs: I found them to be particularly fatty and the rib membrane had not been removed before braising. The membrane does not dissolve in braising, so after cutting into the rib I found myself trying to remove the membrane and large pieces of fat off of the pieces I cut off to eat our table. But, I stopped after two bites and decided to take them home with some risotto instead, so I could cut off the membrane and remove the fatty sections at home. The meat was fork-tender and the rib bone fall off the meat without effort. But, the overall quality of the meat (very fatty) and the membrane not being removed and being very chewy took away from what could have been a delicious dish, especially at $42.00. The demi-glace had a nice flavor (not too salty). Bread: Because my ribs had a glaze and husband's dish had sauce, we also ordered the bread service. This is a ciabatta bread served with nice a nice slice butter. There is a charge for bread service, but it is worth it when you order dishes that have wonderful sauce to enjoy. Dessert: We ordered the Key Lime Pie at $14.00 to split for dessert. The size of the pie is plenty for two people and is served with whipped cream. The pie is tart, but not too tart. If you prefer a "very" tart key lime pie, you can ask for a lime wedge from the bar and squeeze it over the top. Annamarie told us they only make "so many pies" a day at Soul Cafe to keep them fresh since the crust texture is important! Therefore, if you enjoy pie, with a nice crust which is fresh, this is the restaurant to order one for dessert. (Sorry, we started eating the pie before I snapped a photo!) Along with our pie we ordered a decaf cappuccino at $6.00 each. There was a nice amount of foam on the top of the cappuccino and some cinnamon on top when served. The only complaint we had was there was not any sugar on the table nor were we offered any. We like to put sugar in the raw on top of our cappuccinos, but everyone was so busy and we did not want the coffee to get cold, so we just enjoyed it as served. I have never liked gazpacho until I had a small bowl appetizer of it at soul Cafe a week ago. This week, on the specials menu was a shrimp gazpacho bowl, so I gave it a try and loved it. three jumbo shrimp in a substantial bowl of gazpacho as my entree but I also added hatch and jalapeno cheese fritters to make this hearty meal and they were delicious. So now I am hooked on the gazpacho and hatch chili and jalapeno fitters with cheese curds and chili honey and charred tomatillo salsa although I generally don't favor a Mexican influenced menu. These were delicious. In addition to these specials, they also had blackened grouper (which I love) and blackberry short ribs and for dessert they offered carrot cake, cheery turnover or one of their homemade fruit pies. My wife loves the rhubarb pies loaded with real rhubarb. My wife is a meat eater, so she loved her steak, but I am usually happy with the entrees or one of the specials that Soul has on the weekends. As always, the service from Lisa was great and their diligent manager, Annamarie Knapson keeps the place running like a top! read more

FYI: this is a cafe in name only. They honestly serve some of the best elevated American food in the valley. I've come in for both breakfast and happy hour. Their happy hour is unreal. Despite the crowd, the service was great: attentive, friendly, and efficient. Lisa was a great server. The food quality was excellent across the board. We had a wonderful salad loaded with fruits and nuts, and adding grilled chicken made it even better. The fried chicken special was a generous portion and absolutely delicious, especially paired with the corn medley accompaniment. Don't skip the biscuits...,they're dense, huge, and full of flavor. Perfect service and food experience for early Happy Hour! Tiara set us up on the shady front patio, as it was dog-friendly. Our server William, was attentive and cheerful, and prompt w our drink order (Manhattan and Prosecco). The happy hour food choices are worthy, with Deviled Eggs, Coconut Shrimp, Meatballs being our shared snack. All very good and came out quickly. It's always a good sign to see a manager mingling w customers, that being Anna Marie. She was nice to chit-chat with. Tonight, the four of us went to the Soul Cafe for dinner. For a starter, we shared a loaf of warm pumpkin bread. Then, we had the walleye dinner, a chicken piccata dinner, and two beef stroganoffs. Soul Café has really gone downhill. We've been loyal customers for years--easily 100 visits in the past five years--but our last experience sealed it. Service was poor from the start. Our server struggled to keep up and seemed overwhelmed or assigned too many tables. We had to go to the host stand to grab our own coffee and water after waiting several minutes for refills, even after asking more than once. Then came the food. We asked for pepper jack cheese--something we've ordered before--but were told they no longer have it and got cheddar instead. We also asked for grilled jalapeños and received them raw. Meanwhile, the table next to us sent back pancakes because of a hair, and another sent back their eggs because they were cold. This used to be one of our favorite breakfast spots in Scottsdale. Sadly, the quality and attention to detail have dropped sharply. Time to find a new go-to. 1 star. read more
