I simply do not recommend. A friend came to visit from out of town & was really excited to try this place because their roots are Jamaican...however, this was the farthest possible thing from the flavor, taste & heart of the island. If I could take my time back I would. The waitress was as kind as she could possibly be, but the bar and the kitchen (literally the only reasons to go to a restaurant) were not sufficient to even give a second chance. A childhood beverage was not made correctly (not even the right color being clear when it should have been dark) & all of the food was tasteless. Thankfully there was salt, pepper & hot sauce on the table. We went at about 7 in the evening & they were sold out of fish cakes, beef patties and the macaroni. If you're looking for something small, casual and delicious this is for you. If you like rum, this is also for you. A hole in the wall in olde town Petersburg, Soul Rebel echos the calls of rebellious black musicians including bob Marley and his sons, nas, Peter tosh and more. Classic Caribbean music and current R&B hits played during our lunch. The food was delicious. I had the big island burger, which did not disappoint, and my husband got the red snapper with cabbage and rice and peas. There are a few tables in there. I would say maybe five or six and bar as well. Bathrooms are kempt and decorated in theme. This colorful soulful Caribbean restaurant is a bright spot in old town Petersburg. The colors grab you, as you walk towards the building. It will make you feel like you're heading towards the Caribbean ocean, the murals painted inside, are very vibrant and soulful. The service was very welcoming and friendly. The staff was prepared to answer any questions that guest may have. the food was so flavorful and delicious. I could taste every spice and flavor that was mixed in to my dish. Food was amazing. I had the pineapple jerk chicken tacos with fried plantains as a side, could also do fries or salad. The waitress is nice and prompt and the inside is nice. Large windows across the front of the store let in a lot of light and let you people watch. The bug mural on the wall and the decorations around are a nice touch. read more

I really wanted to like this place but it just was not up to par. I made a reservation on the open table app but when I got to the restaurant it was clear based on the amount of space and the people waiting before us that making a reservation in advanced is pointless. My family and I ended up sitting at the bar. The staff is nice but young so my instincts already told me that this might not go well. But at this point there weren't other options at that time of night to figure where else to go eat so we stayed. I ordered the curry fried chicken dinner. The other 3 family members ordered the oxtails dinner ($30 just fyi). We ordered 2 of the oxtail dinners because we figured that on of family members could split a meal since the waitress/hostess/bartender (she wore many hats, another red flag) told us it was large enough to split and it's for a child. The other bartender that was there was very nice and it was her first day. She introduced herself and asked that we give her grace since this was her first day. She asked us what we wanted to drink but she never gave us our drinks. I ordered a rum punch and everyone else had soft drinks so the task was not hard. And so we waited and waited and then another girl came and gave us our drinks ( no clue who she was at the time) Waiting on our food the server that sat us down came out and told us after 15 minutes that they were out of oxtails. In my mind I was ready to go but I had to consider those that was with me and my mom could not go to another place and wait so my family looked over the menu and picked something else. My daughter chose the chicken sandwich, mom chose curry chicken and sis got chicken wings and cabbage. So we waited and waited. As we are waiting others who had online orders are waiting too and let me tell you, you could feel the tension building in the room. Someone else's order was given to a wrong person. It was just crazy unnecessary things happening. So after about 35 minutes the server brings 2 curry chicken dinners out and a chicken sandwich. I told the server that I ordered the fried curry chicken so she had to take mine back and then bought out my sisters food. Another 20 minutes and my food came out. Now for the record I eat out often and I support small businesses. I live in Richmond where I would say we have some great Jamaican/Caribbean restaurants. This one is not it. Food had no flavor and I am pretty sure I could had made it at home and it would have tasted so much better. The plantains were over cooked. It was all just one big disappointment., Never did we see a manager or owner asking if everything was ok or good. The new bartender was just trying to get thru the day and the server of many hats was doing what I think she only knows how to do. This restaurant won't survive without proper leadership. I could only imagine what the chaos is in the kitchen. *Food for thought to the business owner* Presentation is everything, customer service is crucial and impeccable culinary skills is necessary in order to sustain in this industry. We ordered the jerk chicken with rice and peas and the brown stew chicken with plantains and cabbage. My chicken was tender but flavorless, and my husband's stewed chicken was tough and flavorless. I really wanted to support this local business and gave them three chances, but the service has been consistently disappointing. The first time, I dined in and was given plasticware, even though silverware was available. The second time, I placed an Uber Eats order an hour before closing, and they refused to make my smoothie. The third time was the final straw--I came in for a takeout order, and the waitress spent the entire time texting on her phone. I arrived early and asked for a drink while I waited, but I had to ask three times before being completely ignored. She never checked on me and only placed my ticket down without saying a word. I had to stop her mid-text to add something to my order. This level of service is unacceptable, and unfortunately, I won't be coming back. read more

Forgot to post about my evening at Soul Rebel Food. This place is a vibe. Love the cozy corner and the murals. The drinks were good!! We went late so some items were sold out. We had a large group so it took some time for the food to come out...but when it did...!!!! The oxtails were tender (I wanted more cabbage but it was the last order). The wings and fries were good also. They have house made sauces so I had to cop one! I will be back and I can't wait to enjoy an event there!!! read more

Another big win for Olde Town Petersburg. The jerk wings were beautifully seasoned....arguably the best wings I've had in a long while. Also had the jerk burger with plantains. Delicious. They have an alcohol license but I settled for a Dirt Coke for lunch. TVs in the bar area make it a great place to watch a game. All in all, we have a winner. read more

One of my new favorite places in the city. My family and I have been here on a couple of occasions. The food is delicious and I hear they have DJ's on the weekends. I had the jerk chicken and it was my first time having options on the type of sauce I wanted on my chicken. My family gets the pineapple fried rice which everyone loves. The service was decent but I give grace to new businesses. The wait time is a little long for food and I'm sure that will improve as time goes on. The ambiance gives off an island feel. I had a delicious curry chicken dinner and a fresh pineapple, mango, and strawberry smoothie. The Jamaican chicken meal my husband ordered was not tasty due to overcooked chicken and a lack of jerk Sosauce. The service was fair. Despite telling the server that the chicken was dry and overcooked, he ignored us. Our intention was to order desserts, but unfortunately, they were out of pineapple upside-down cake and rum cake. It takes us over 30 minutes to drive to the restaurant from our home. It's unlikely that we will make that drive again. I know it's a new restaurant, but serving subpar food is not acceptable. read more
