This place is great. I love all the options you can pick. The food taste so good. They have vegan cheese and meat. Also their Mac and cheese is really good. I loved how fresh the kale was. It's Lenten season, which means I'm exploring more vegetarian and vegan spots throughout March. This time, I stopped by Soul Veg City at 203 E. 75th St. Soul Veg has been around for years. I remember coming here back in 2013 just for their fried mushrooms. They've long been a South Side staple for soul-style vegetarian food. The atmosphere has shifted a bit as of 2026. It now operates more like a lunch counter, though there is still a small seating area in the back. Just note that everything is served to-go, even if you dine in, no traditional plates. It's a popular spot, so depending on when you go, there may be a bit of a wait. That said, the food is absolutely worth it. I tried a variety of items, including cauliflower, barbecue seitan, dressing, and noodles, and everything was delicious. The flavors were rich, comforting, and exactly what you want from soul food. The portions were generous, but not so heavy that I felt overly stuffed. If you're looking for a standout vegetarian option, this is a must-visit. This spot was on my list and the time was today! Hubby and I went here and had a delightful lunch! We had a warm greeting from the beautiful staff! They were so happy, warm and joyful. They were gracious to explain to us some of the food offerings and gave us a couple of samples to make sure we wanted the choices we ultimately selected. We had the okra, rice, pinto beans, spinach, bbq seitan, fried cauliflower, Mac n cheese and all of it was FANTASTIC! Great flavors! We sat and ate and spoke with other customers who also enjoyed their food and experience too. We did notice the dessert bar afterwards so we got some items to go based off the staff's recommendations. We took a slice of pumpkin pie, pb cookies and lemon cookies. One of the few places in the city that serves a good and authentic vegan breakfast. I tried the Full Breakfast which includes 4 sides of your choice. I went with the pancakes, breakfast patty, tofu scramble, and hash browns. I'd have to say my favorites were the hash browns and the scramble. I wasn't crazy about the breakfast patty nor was my boyfriend who's vegan and wish they had the bacon available that morning. The staff were very personable and friendly. They make you feel very welcome. As for the restaurant itself, it is very spacious. They have a large dining room which I didn't get a photo of behind me to show the true scale of it. They offer a bunch of drinks in fridges along the wall and their cake selection was honestly impressive. My boyfriend and I were definitely impressed, and we'll surely be back! read more

Wow. Incredible. Words can't describe it! So incredibly flavorful. Our favorite is to just order from the daily changing hot bar. Our favorites to get are the mac and cheese as well as whatever bbq meats they have available that day. Everything here is vegan! We also got the "Italian V" one time and it wasn't our favorite, but it was still pretty good. We just stick to the hot bar now. We have also tried their ice cream and smoothies and they're both really great too! The staff and the overall ambiance of the restaurant is both very happy and joyous. Everyone there always makes you feel welcomed and makes you want to return. Parking can sometimes be a little difficult as I believe there is only street parking. We have returned multiple times here and each time we are blown away! We look forward to continuing to visit Soul Veg City for their amazing vegan soul food. I have been slowly switching to a vegan diet so I had this spot on my to visit list. It's located on the southeast corner. Found street parking in front. Door situation a bit confusing but made it in. A nice guy assisted with me placing order. I want a bunch of this and that so I ordered from the hot bar. He was patient with me and explained everything. Next time I will know. Also placed order for a fruit juice and smoothie drinks. Place was clean, contemporary, nice music, friendly staff. Soul Veg City has been on my radar for a while, and my husband and I were finally able to head over there for a Saturday lunch. They have several things on their menu that look good, but I was most intrigued by their hot bar so we could try a few different food items. We tried about 5 different items, and everything was delicious. My fave was probably the mac and cheese. The hot bar is $9.95 per lb, and our container of food ended up costing about $16. We shared a Peanut Butter and Berry Smoothie, which is a bit pricey at $8, but it was really tasty. I scooped up a piece of Sweet Potato Pie before I'd noticed that there were even more dessert options I could have selected from. Sweet Potato probably wouldn't have been my top choice out of all the other cake flavors they had available, but honestly, no regrets. There is a spacious area for dining, so we sat down to enjoy our food. Counter service was attentive, and I am already looking forward to a return visit. My first time getting a catering order from them was great. Food was good, the size of the pans were worth the price and it was ready at the time I requested. Second getting a cater order, food was not ready, so I had to stand there ad waiy an additional hour for her to cook it, then when I got home THERE WAS NO FLAVOR IN THE FOOD AT ALL!, and the pan size got smaller but the price remained the same. I love this place and try to stop there when time permits. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. I took my elderly Aunt once who is not vegan and she just loved her meal. She had the dressing, mac and cheese, cabbage and Parmesan meatloaf. It was all delicious and the ambience is great. We came here Juneteenth weekend, and during one of my 'no red meat' phases. But even carnivores would find something here they'd like. I can't get used to the new name; it used to be 'Soul Vegetarian', which I like better frankly. Anyway, we came here for 'lunch' around 2 on Saturday. There are hot and cold bars, plus a cooler with desserts and pre-set meals. There is definitely less of a wait for the bars than ordering on demand. The portions are dished out by staff, it is not self serve. I got cabbage, 'rib meat', 'shrimp' stew, veggies, and cornbread. We also got sweet potato pie and soft serve peach for dessert. The front room for ordering was hot, with no air, but the dining area was cool, with a cooler of 'lemon water'. The food was fabulous, moist and maybe a little underseasoned! we were given salt and pepper. There should be labels on the food so you don't waste time asking what is what, but I realize the menu changes so that may not be feasible; there should also be a HEAT index! The shrimp stew was spicy; I can deal with spicy but it's good to know in advance. I am now vegetarian but I was vegan for a long time and GOOD Mac n cheese is harddddddd to come by, but this was the best I have ever had by far. It was delicious. Greens can be overly salty or under seasoned however theirs were perfect!!! I could've ate so much more. The 'ribs' were also delicious. Coated in a sweet BBQ sauce. I ate everything and it held me over for a number of hours in the heat. I also want to note their service was soooo good. Super efficient, friendly and consistent. Unfortunately a very bad experience. I placed an online order, waited at home; when I arrived to Soul Veg at the listed pick up time my food was not ready. No worries- however- I had to wait 1 hour and 30 minutes- even then the entire order was not ready. I then said just give me what is ready and what is not I want a refund for. The restaurant agreed, but no refund was ever issued. The food I received was the veggie burger, it was cold and below average. Not great taste. And for the wait time- not worth it. The inside is beautiful and captures black excellence. You can order from a menu or from the hot bar which is by the pound. There is also a cold case and all raw options. Wow! Haven't been by Soul Veg since before the update, so it definitely felt like a completely different restaurant when my friend and I visited. Rather than table service, they've got a self-service, fast casual vibe now. They have a hot bar and a cold bar to order from (though there are still menu items available), they dish it out, and you pay. You can opt to find a table to dine-in, or carry out. The dining room had a water dispenser which was also self-service While I preferred the self-service (I was seated and eating in minutes which never happened on previous visits) my friend said she missed the more formal dining option. That said all the food was great, and I enjoyed my bbq protein and cabbage immensely. My friend said her poboy was excellent. The blueberry pie got mixed reviews-- good sweetness but could use more crust. Overall, while I missed some aspects of the old restaurant (like the gentlemen always playing chess at the entrance) all things change and SVC's update is for the better and the food still slaps! read more

Oh this is good! It's been around for over 40 years, but this was our first time here. The food exceeded our high expectations. We ordered a few things from the hot bar without even intending to. We were entranced by the pressed BBQ seitan, the Cajun blackened tofu and the cauliflower in spicy sauce. All three hit the spot and it was tough to pick a favorite: I was in a BBQ mood, but that Cajun tofu had some impressive seasoning and texture. Then again, that cauliflower... Anyway, we ordered two things off the menu: 1) seitan gyros with plain fries and 2) vegan fish and tartar with battered fries. The gyro is called Amazing, but it fell a little short of that. Still, it was very good and the vegan cucumber sauce very much tied the sandwich together. The pita bread had a wonderful softness and flavor to it as well. The second was unbelievably low-key awesome: great combination of flavors and textures in the soy fish and tartar. The bun was slightly too big, but it wasn't a detriment either. The battered fries have an outstanding texture and flavor as well, also low-key awesome. More food? Heck yeah! Vanilla walnut cake with a chocolate (and maybe hazelnut) frosting rounded out the meal. Actually, we ate this first while we were waiting for the menu items to be prepared, but don't tell anyone. In any case, it had a sweet flavor and rich texture overall, and it was very satisfying.
