We ordered from the 1st location, Soule, many times so we were familiar with the food...and what we like. I chose Soule to Soule for my birthday dinner with my daughter because it has dine in and I wanted it again. The decor is lovely with black art on the walls and cozy seating. DJ was our waiter and he was very attentive. I usually get the fried green tomatoes but we chose the creamy garlic shrimp and they were amazing. The sauce is so good! My daughter ordered the salmon and shrimp which she loves and it was a healthy portion, over mashed potatoes with the yummy sauce. I had the lollipop lamb chops which came with two sides. I chose the Mac & cheese and greens, both of which I love and both were as good as I remembered. My only gripe is they leave the stems on the greens. I hate stems!! But the meal was delicious. We had Arnold Palmers and their Soule punch to drink. They do offer BYOB for a $10 corking fee but I forgot so no alcohol til we got back home, It was a great meal. read more

The food was delicious and the place was really nicely decorated. We called ahead an hour or so before they were closing and they allowed us to come. I will give them a little grace because of that . I love seeing that so many young black men are employed there . Because it was the end of the night they were out of so many things....which was a little disappointing . I would absolutely suggest the young men getting uniforms and looking a bit more put together to match the ambiance of your place . We saw random t-shirts and SLIDES. The food was SLAMMIN (you should be proud . The fish was flavorful crispy & hot , the greens were sooooooo GOOD. My friends enjoyed their lamb chops too . OH!!!! And the music has us JAMMIN!!! The last critique was the take out situation . We had food we wanted to take home and was initially told they had no "to-go containers" which I gave an audible gasp and I said ARE YOU FOR REAL??!! Then he said they had little mini ones . So we were forced to stuff our leftovers in this mini sided containers (unacceptable) I then asked for a bag and was disappointed again when we were give these small handle-less paper lunch bags . This place is where you want to go if you want to immediately go into a food coma afterwards!! We're no strangers to all of the awesome businesses on Chicago Ave, and this place didn't disappoint! My husband chose this restaurant for date night because he wanted to compare the fish & grits with the ones he's had in the past as a born & raised southern boy. It was pretty quiet here on Saturday evening upon arrival, but we were seated quickly which is always a plus especially close to a holiday weekend. Service was prompt and friendly, we already had our orders planned out ahead of time, so we were ready to go as soon as we got there! Unfortunately, the fried salmon jerk pasta that I wanted wasn't available, but I had a backup just in case. What we ordered: fried catfish sliders, fish & grits, salmon+ shrimp, side of greens, and sweet tea (note: this is a BYOB establishment, so no cocktails or alcohol offered!) The catfish sliders were on our table probably less than 3 minutes from ordering them. As someone who has never tried catfish before and is really picky about fish in general, these sliders were DELISH. The breading and the way that they fried them made me wish I ordered the fried chicken instead of the salmon. The breading was ultra crispy without being too greasy while maintaining the moisture of the fish inside (also, no old oil taste here!) Our entrees came out soon after. Both were fresh+hot and straight out the kitchen. Portions were appropriate to the price, and everything was cooked perfectly. I kept stealing forkfuls of my husband's grits because they were that good. You could definitely see the butter pooling beneath them, but they weren't overly salty, so it was the perfect balance of richness and flavor. I'd say we were in and out with our leftovers boxed and check taken care of in less than 40 minutes (we're not the type of diners who like to sit around for hours)! Empty dishes were cleared quickly which was nice given the tables are quite small. Extra napkins were provided which was much appreciated because I personally always need them haha. As we were wrapping up, I heard a person at the table next to us exclaim that this was the best food they'd ever had, so that was something nice to remember the night by :) I think the only change I'd love to see would be different sauces accompanying the dishes! The sauce for the catfish sliders, grits, and salmon seemed to be the same. While it was a great sauce, I think that having a couple of different ones would really give more dimension to the awesome menu that they have here! read more

I tried this Black owned gem for the first time on Thursday with two friends visiting from out of town. My friends are from New York and have high standards for really delicious food and a nice ambiance at restaurants, so when I saw the decor on the reviews at Soule to Soule, I thought we'd try it out! The location is an intimate spot, and the pictures from other reviews accurately reflect the decor which incorporates a cool dark green velvet texture on the furniture and curtains throughout with gold accents. (I didn't take any pictures of the decor while there) The server was attentive and throughout our dining experience we were never left waiting for anything too long or felt neglected. One suggestion I'd have is that the server turn on the charm and smile and create some more warmth and welcoming energy, that would go a long way in the future. We started off with the jerk wings, which definitely had a spicy kick to them. The plates were a bit worn down which took away from their presentation. The sauce on them was thick and the chicken wasn't as tender as I'd prefer. But the main course stole the entire show! I had the catfish and grits and wow the flavor of this dish was phenomenal! For my friends, one got the same as me, and the other got the salmon, shrimp and potatoes and absolutely loved the flavors as well! The food was a hit for them! The main dish was amazing and I'd definitely return. I did not realize until we arrived that this restaurant does not serve alcoholic drinks, so this is something to be mindful of. We ordered the Soule punch which was quite delicious! I truly believe this place could be a real star with some minor tweaks; upgrade the menus to some laminated or better yet menus in a leather menu holder, up the warmth with service, and keep the music at a volume that is enjoyable and allows for easy conversation among guests. So good. So, so good. My fiancé and I shared a plate of catfish, macaroni and cheese, and greens, and it was everything you'd expect from great soul food. Everything was packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. The catfish was crispy without being too salty, and the mac and cheese was rich and satisfying. I also had a daiquiri, which I probably could've skipped--this place is about the food, not the cocktails. It was so good, it makes me want to try their vegan options next time. The only downside? The older man working in the kitchen was giving serious Grinch vibes. He seemed to have a chip on his shoulder and was unnecessarily rude to customers. I've been wanting to try Soule to Soule for a while and it exceeded our expectations. The jerk shrimps were a perfect app to start - good blend of spice and shrimp cooked to perfection, then we tried honey drizzled chicken which was crispy and tender and fried catfish, the crust was super crisp and not oily at all! Selection of sides was fantastic - mash potato and cream corn were my absolute winners. The restaurant is cozy and quite intimate set up, the service was good and staff took good care of us. That man put his whole foot, ankle, and tax refund into those lamb chops--juicy, tender, and seasoned like he had something to prove. The fried green tomatoes? So crispy they filed a noise complaint. And don't get me started on the greens--they were so good, I almost stood up and testified. The cornbread? Moist like it had a skincare routine. I needed a moment of silence after the first bite. We started with fried green tomatoes. They were crispy and full of flavor. Our main courses were fried chicken and fried catfish dinners. Both were fried very well and were crispy with good flavor. The food is delicious and well prepared. I take my hat off to the chef. The prices are a little high for the portions. Catfish portion was small and cooked too hard. Salmon pasta was really good with a large piece of salmon and fresh shrimp. Fried green tomatoes were some of the best I've ever had. This restaurant has so much potential I really hate to only give them 3 stars, but the service is terrible. I went with my bf on a Saturday night. There's only metered street parking so plan extra time to find a spot. We had a reservation and arrived a few minutes early. No priority is given to reservations we were stuck waiting behind everybody else. The space is really small with no lobby or wait area and no hostess so it was a chaotic mess. Uber eats person waiting for an order, large party waiting to be seated for a birthday, plus the walk in patrons. The hostess is the waitress is the busboy is the bartender. One person doing 4 jobs for a full restaurant on a Saturday night is absolutely terrible. Long waits for everything even water. You better order everything at once cuz she may not return for 20mins while she waits on every other table. She was doing her best but please hire a couple more employees so the level of service matches the amazing food and decor. The bar area wasn't utilized at all. Nobody seated there and no bartender and no tv. It takes up half of a wall in a small space it needs to be used for something. All bar beverages were pre made or bottled cocktails or wine sold for inflated prices. read more

It was the worst restaurant I've ever been to. We were brought out water with the server's hand covering the rims of the glasses. I ordered chicken, was asked if I wanted white or dark meat , I ordered white and got two wings and a thigh. That chicken was horrible, it was old and had been refried, the sweet potatoes were dry and had no flavor, and the Mac and cheese had no cheese and no taste. The only thing good in the restaurant was the music playing in the background. I would never go back or recommend it to anyone . YUCK!!!! read more

My sister, cousin, and I went to Soule to Soule last night for dinner. We wanted a cute intimate space to have dinner and talk. My cousin arrived first. We had a reservation. No one greeted her when she arrived. After waiting a bit, she was finally sat in the corner, by the kitchen entrance. The restaurant was pretty empty so I don't know why we would be placed in the back by the entry to the kitchen. It was not the best location because it was high traffic. Not much later, my sister and I arrived, and we could tell by her face that she was not pleased. We were also sat directly next to two other women. Again, the restaurant was small and intimate, but also very empty. We definitely did not need to be that close. That said, we begin to speak to those women since we were all sat pretty much together, and they shared their experience so far...not the best. Eventually, my cousin ordered the fried green tomatoes while we reviewed the menu. It took while for the appetizer to come out and for someone to check on what we (my sister and I) wanted to order. When they did come out, they were soggy, greasy, and not suitable. So when the waitress did finally return, we asked for the check. We paid, and left. The ladies next to us asked "oh you all are leaving?" and we let them know yes and why. They understood as they too felt the food was just okay. What I found most interesting, is not one employee asked or cared why 3 women, came in and left without eating. The whole experience was just poor service and we left and went and spent our money somewhere else. The spot is cute but the service was not ok and if those tomatoes where in indicator of the rest of the menu, I am glad I didn't order anything else. Dear Heavenly Father, I have tasted the BEST soul food restaurant in the United States. So serious. Everything was cooked to perfection! Let's start out with the greens. Hands down the flavor was *chef kiss. Cat fish was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The drinks are so bomb as well not too sweet or to lemony just perfect! I was visiting this restaurant from Indianapolis Indiana . We were told that there were no tables available (even though there were clearly several) we were told that the empty tables were for reservations and we could sit at the bar to wait to see if the reservations would show up. After 30 minutes of waiting the reservations didn't show and we were not offered to sit at the open tables. We had to asked Tanya and Victor if they were going to at least take our orders. After ordering and receiving our food. My mac & Cheese was cold and the lamb chops were tough. There was no cornbread to go with the meals and no lemonade!! Between their two locations, we've had most everything on the menu and never encountered anything less than a really good dish. I recommend the fried green tomatoes, bbq jerk wings, Cajun salmon bites appetizers, and for entrees; the fried chicken, fried catfish and lollipop lamb chops. My favorite sides are mac'n'cheese, greens, asparagus, and potato salad. My family raves about the shrimp and salmon dishes, especially jerked. The Chicago Ave location is the original spot, smaller and more intimate. I really like its vibe and it's also byob. The Roosevelt location is bigger with a full bar and craft cocktails. During my first visit to this restaurant I enjoyed the beautiful style and light music. I was greeted upon arrival and able to sit where I chose because I did make the required reservation. I was very surprised that this restaurant had no tables for eating full meals. It was later explained that the business is more of a lounge that serves tapas or small plates. They also provide mocktail drink mixers for customer who bring their own beverages. They do not serve alcohol. I tried the fried green tomatoes which wasn't satisfying because they were sliced thin and tasted like fried fish. Possibly prepared in the same batter and grease as the fried fish. I also tried the catfish and chips. The fish was fresh and tasty. Further into eating the full meal it became salty for my palate. I'd like to return with friend to lounge and drink. We arrived at Soule to Soule on Tuesday, 10/29/24 at 4:12pm, an hour after the posted opening time of 3:00pm, with a party of 7. Five members of our party were visiting our fair city from Springfield and Bloomington, IL and wanted to dine at a good soul food restaurant so we chose Soule. When we entered, the restaurant was empty-- no guests and no staff. We waited a few minutes thinking someone had stepped away but would return shortly. After 5 minutes we yelled "Hello" repeatedly in the direction of the bar and kitchen area but nobody answered. All 7 of us were confused but stood there patiently. I must admit we thought that perhaps we had walked in on a crime scene since there was nobody around. I decided to call the restaurant phone #. The cordless phone was on top of the bar. We allowed the phone to ring for about a minute without success, hoping the ring tone would be heard by someone. One of our party knocked loudly on the rear door marked PRIVATE, and again nobody answered. I then went to the same door and knocked loudly two times but no answer. After a few more minutes had passed (approximately 20 minutes total), two black male employees entered thru the PRIVATE door and simply said hello. We told them we were a party of 7. The employee asked if we had a reservation which we did not. He then said that there would be a wait of 10 minutes and explained that their absence was due to their "prepping" for the day's business I presume. I must say that there was a faint smell of marijuana detected by a few in our party but we could be wrong. After another few minutes we were directed to a table. By this point, none of us wanted to stay as the 5 out of town guests were catching an Amtrak train back to Bloomington and Springfield at 7:00pm. We informed the staffer we were leaving which we did. There were no apologies offered for this bewildering behavior by anybody at all. First impressions are very important and the impression we got immediately was definitely not a good one. We were extremely disappointed having traveled to West Town from downtown Chicago to encounter this kind of non-service. read more
