At first I didn't like Soulmans BBQ in general because I don't like their hoagie bun or round bun bread. Since I usually get a chopped beef sandwich I nearly X'd them out b/c of this. But when I went to this Royse City location I decided to try a baked potato with my sandwich and it was so silky smooth and delicious and the staff is so friendly that I had a change of heart. I thought about it and said their BBQ is pretty good and their baked potato is fantastic, so why not try the double barrel, loaded baked potato with brisket and a side of Texas toast? I threw in a couple extra sides that were delicious (okra, coleslaw), and suddenly it's become my new favorite place in the area for BBQ! I don't mind the free ice cream either. read more

My son dragged me here on a Saturday after a couple games of baseball. He goes a lot with my husband and they love it. Barbecue isn't typically my first choice of food options, but my son wanted it and pretty much begged because it's the best thing in the world to him, so we went. I was pleasantly surprised. I actually liked the counter service here because I was able to see the food and pick what I wanted. A few barbecue options, a few vegetable options, and a few potato options. Plenty to choose from. The food was good, and we went on a Saturday afternoon, so it wasn't busy at all. There were maybe four tables with people so our service was super fast as it tends to be with counter service. It was clean and the staff was friendly. All good things. The only reason it is four stars instead of five might be on my choice. I went with the turkey and it was a little bland. As a general rule you can't go wrong with Soulman's BBQ. I have to say the soul Bowl is my new favorite as I can get double cabbage with sausage and Brisket. My goto for some time was the three meat plate ( brisket, rib, smoked chicken) with cabbage and ranch beans add in a sausage link. My fav is spicy sauce but the original is good. Prices were fair and they have decent monthly specials. I like locations near truck stops as they tend to be better portions although I have had one in Dallas skimp on my cabbage ( meaning I ordered double but seemed like I only got one) but that is my own perception the food tastes great which is the main point. Service is always friendly and on point. Plus any entree gets a free ice cream cone! Looks like standard coke products plus tea. Deserts offered were good and bathrooms clean. read more

Good barbecue for sure. I am a big fan of their ranch beans. I could eat a pint of them by themselves! Green beans are on point. Im not a fan of the potato salad. Its not bad, but it tastes isn't up to par compared to their other sides. Employees are always friendly. I sample other barbecue places and I have found some great ones, but Soulman's I can always depend on for a great meal. I hope they take this as a challenge for their potato salad. My husband and I stopped by after wanting to go for a while and seeing the ads- I was expecting it to be good and I was not let down! I got the pulled pork, Texas creamed corn, and okra and they were wonderful. The sauce was great as well. My husband got the brisket, mashed potatoes, and macaroni. He loved the macaroni and brisket. I did notice that the brisket didn't have a smoke ring, and I've had better Texas toast but it was still wonderful. We'll definitely be going back for this great food again! read more

Went to this location for the first time today. Not great, just "OK", and considering the price ($50 for two people, with dessert) there are much better BBQ places around here. I had a two meat plate with ham and turkey, mashed potatoes, and Mac n cheese. It was mediocre for flavor, and the ham tasted cheap (not sure how else to put that). My wife had the pulled pork and ribs, and found the ribs to be mostly inedible. Also, the restaurant interior was outdated and needed repair. The air conditioning vent kept leaking on me at the table, the ceiling fans looked ready to swing themselves out of the ceiling, and everything felt a little dirty. For better food, better price, and a cleaner restaurant, go to Baker's Ribs just a little up the highway in Caddo Mills. I live around this area and have been there several times. If you want to spend just a little more for better food, go to Texas Roadhouse in Rockwall. The price last time was just $20 more than what I paid here for two people. I realize it's not a 1-to-1 match, but it's definitely better than this. read more

Hmmmmmm good! Hubby said some of the best robs he eaten anywhere in the country. Chicken falls off the bone and sliced marbled brisket. Was tender and juicy. Surprisingly good chain BBQ. Don't come in here expecting "craft BBQ" or what's trending on Instagram. Come in expecting friendly service, generous portions of BBQ, and great sides. I stopped in on Friday for lunch and ordered a chopped beef sandwich combo. The chopped beef is cut right in front of you, unlike a lot of places which have scraps of beef that have been sitting in a tub full of sauce. That alone is worth a four star. Combine that with their spicy sauce, which is a great mix of sweet and spicy, and you have a great sandwich served on a long hoagie roll type of bun. I also liked their fries and mac and cheese. In short, this is a great option for a quick bite, especially when travelling on I-30. read more

The person who serves the meat is not very good at listening. I asked for brisket from the point. He refused and gave me chopped from the flat. Said he added some fat for flavor but otherwise it would be all fat. The point looked great but I will never know. I did have the sausage and turkey. Those were good. The staff was friendly, but the meat was not very flavorful. You'll need to soak it in their spicy sauce to get some flavor. The sides were mediocre as well. I'm not sure what was lacking. . . There was a nice Texas presentation of food. The picture with the brisket sandwich was take two for me though. I slathered the meat in spicy sauce and asked for bread that was not toasted to make a sandwich. I went and got the cream corn and French fries since another reviewer recommended those sides. I'm sad to say, I'm still not impressed because the fries were too soggy and the cream corn was a little harder than expected. It could have been an off day, so give them a chance. This is an older location of Soulman's BBQ, an "Old Soul"... and smaller in size. 18-Wheelers park here since it is edge of the Dallas area urban sprawl. The parking lot is crushed rock and dirt, out here in Royse City that way of life is disappearing. Go inside, if it is your first time, this is like a cafeteria, grab your tray... Figure out what you want To Pay For... with real BBQ meat, cost can add up quickly. Then you have all the sides to go with your meat. A local lady is chatting me up, that is a rural Texas trait to make small talk in the stores, etc, with public, about what you are going to eat. The Boss Man is chopping meat, asking you what you want, and giving quick orders to crew members. I picked the "Soul Bowl" and prayed for a good serving: Frito chips base, chopped BBQ pork meat, chopped sausage, some pinto beans, onion bits... in a bowl. I asked for a side of Pinto Beans. Now, you arrive at register, pay up. I got a Large side of Pintos that ended up costing $6.49 for 16 ounces? I had like 15 people in line behind me, so I literally ATE IT this time LOL ( Never again!!! ). Now you wander to the dining tables, many are covered in used dishes... ( my pet peeve with Soul, the table bussing is done when time allows ) I find a clear table, right under a deer head mounted on the wall, perfect. The Whole Soul Bowl gets in my belly, no problem, and I keep half the Pintos in the container for tomorrow's breakfast. My parents and I stopped at this location on our way home (Richardson) from Arkansas. We ordered for take-out online and when we arrived, it was ready and the staff was so friendly. The restaurant was clean and I appreciated the signs reminding patrons to wear a mask. They also had hand sanitizer stations at the bathrooms. With COVID cases rising, we appreciate a business that takes the pandemic seriously. I had the chopped beef sandwich & fries and my parents both had the pulled pork with a side of fried okra. This establishment was very clean, and cool (Texas heat will get you !) and the servers especially I have to thank because they gave me ADULT portions !!!! The Sweet Tea was Sweet Tea !!!!! Having lunch at the Royce City location and the staff were extremely nice, however I am going to guess the owner walked in, started complaining about the food and gripping out the staff in front of customers. The deamor of the store chnaged when he came in. This is what i call "just a cranky old man". As a consumer, I don't want to see this which is why the rating is low. The LACK of good smokey BBQ aroma shoulda been the first giveaway.The oily grease soaked through the tin foil to the paper bag, sign of good homestyle food. BUZZZZZZZ,dead wrong. The sauce had more smoke than the meat. The brisket was so fatty and oily it was almost inedible. 1/4 cup of oil, about a half pound of fat trimmed, and 10 BRAWNY paper towels later, my first bite brought tears to my eyes, how could anyone treat brisket this way. NO SMOKE RING, NO SMOKE FLAVOR, NO TASTE. I'm still crying for the steer. Now on to the sausage, PLAIN OLE EVERYDAY VARIETY. Nothing to write home about, NO SMOKE, NO GRILL MARKS, JUST $15 PORK FLAVOR MEATSTICK. you will get more flavor from pan frying eckridge sausage. This is the best location for Soulman's. I haven't been to another location that's topped this one. I always order a double-barrel baked potato with extra extra sauce. It's definitely filling and oh so yummy. I've been to a few other locations around Dallas and I'm always let down a little bit. There is something magical about this Royse City location. The fries were good... my baked potato with shredded brisket was swimming in butter, so I could only get through 1/4 before it started making me feel queasy. My family really enjoyed their meals. Looks like this is a local chain that serves food cafeteria style. My inlaws said before Covid it was self-service, but now the staff puts all the sides on your plate for you. read more

Have to have some BBQ in Texas. First time and wasn't sure how it really worked. We got the 3 meat platter to share. We chose ribs, chicken and pork. I didn't know we were suppose to get our own sides. We sat down and we didn't know we were suppose to get our own BBQ sauce. All the meats were tender and not dry. The BBQ sauce was more watery than we liked. Sides were ok. The fries I thought were too salty though. The staff was friendly and nice. Seems lots of locals go there. read more

I dont see a nursing home next door!! So why are they chopping the meat into shredded beef. The potato salad. This was just a puree of mush. The Mac and cheese was noodles and can cheese. I am a native Texan, grew up working in a Bar-B-Q joint, and am very particular about my BBQ. Soulman's is Classic Texas BBQ, in the tradition of the old East Texas joints. It's not a la cart, you can still order a 1, 2 or 3-meat plate. They don't serve the fatty end (point) as sliced beef, and use it for their chopped beef (as you should). The Brisket is consistently good, never dry. The Ribs are Great! They have a fantastic german sausage, and the hot links are good, as well. The turkey is also very good. I haven't tried the chicken, but it always looks great. They have a large selection of sides--my favs are the mac-n-cheese, coleslaw, and fried cabbage. I like the ranchero beans, too. For dessert, I like really like the banana pudding. On top of a high quality product at a very fair price, the people are great, too. The staff is very welcoming, and the customer service is above par. It's not flashy like a lot of the newer joints, but it never disappoints! read more
