I read the other sub par reviews to see if the experiences were like mine. Sure enough, they were. I ate here in 2009 and again yesterday (11/4/24), as I was back in BC for a visit. The elderly couple was a bit abrasive and rough around the edges back then, but more so now. The behavior and mannerisms of this couple combined is very comparable to Seinfeld's 'Soup Nazi'. I politely asked the old woman (others refer to her as toothless) if I may take a picture of the menu and she practically had a heart attack. She screamed - "If you take a picture, I will kick you out of this place!". The old man also had a sarcastic tone in his voice when I asked about mayo in the chicken salad sandwich. The mushroom soup was pretty good and the chicken salad filling was OK. The house baked bread was the only thing that really made this whole experience bearable. It appears as though that these two seniors are set in their miserable, toxic and irritating ways and are too proud to make a change for the better. read more

Heard really good things about this place so gave it a try today. Overall extremely disappointed in the food and price. 6" cold sandwiches are $9, 12" is $17. Got two 12" blts and he barely put any lettuce or tomatoes on either of them. The bacon is also the microwave instant kind so very salty. Almost $40 for two very bland and cheap subs. After a recommendation from a friend who loves this place we decided to pop in on a Saturday afternoon to see what it was like. There were only a few tables available for sitting but we wanted to get our order to go so it was no problem for us. The elderly couple who own the place are also the two people who operate the spot - the husband makes the food while the wife will ring you up. They were both very lovely! We ordered a large chicken Parmesan sandwich and a mushroom soup - both were good! The chicken Parmesan was a little different than expected as there was no melted cheese/sauce on top (we think there was some Parmesan in the sauce) but it was still tasty. The soup was good but on the salty side which I personally prefer but some may not. The one part which was a little off putting was that they strongly prefer cash and will ask you to pay with cash next time if you choose to pay with debit (they don't accept credit cards) and they thanked us for wearing our masks in the store but they were not wearing masks themselves so keep this in mind if this is something important to you! She was so confused when I was taking a photo and kept telling me to eat then she's like oooh photo photo too cute. Everything is made fresh in house even the bread!! The sauce in the poor boy is a bit too spicy for me but bareable The mushroom soup was so delicious perfect balance of creamy and mushroom chunks. Give me moreeeee. We really enjoyed our lunch at Soup Plus. We found the owners to be lovely and helpful. My husband had the Louisiana poor boy and the Mexican soup. I split the tuna salad sandwich with my son and also had the mushroom soup. Both of the sandwiches were delicious. They make their own bread and it was fresh and tasty. I tried this place based on a recommendation but I would not go back. I guess the owner fancies himself to be like the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld, as that's how he was acting. I read the sandwich board to see if anything jumped out at me. The Chicken Parmesan sub sounded good, as anything with melted cheese sounds good to me! I asked the guy what was on the sandwich and he said, "Everything you don't like". I laughed and said, "Well, I really don't like mayo, so please don't put that on my sandwich" he said "fine", and told me to sit down. I had also ordered a bowl of mushroom soup (which was very good) and I started eating that while he made my sandwich. When it was ready, he leaned over the counter and held out the plate for me to take. I brought the plate back to my table and lifted the bread to see what it looked like inside. There was no melted cheese, and the chicken looked like teriyaki chicken, not chicken parm. Plus, there was mayo on it. I took it back to the counter as I thought he got my order wrong. But no, he said the 'melted cheese' was actually parmesan cheese mixed in with the chicken. He apologized for the mayo and gave me a new sandwich, but it was definitely teriyaki marinated chicken with parmesan cheese sprinkled in. I guess if you are an ass, you don't have to justify your menu - you just glare at people until they either eat or leave. Well, I ate the sandwich, but it was not good - aside from the bread. I'll give them that - two stars for good soup and fresh bread - but terrible customer service and sandwich ingredients. If you don't know what a chicken parmesan sandwich is, don't put it on your menu. Simple. Will not return. read more

I liked it. My experience was nothing like the other poster's. I walk in around noon. The couple greets me at the counter. Both are very friendly. I order my soup and sandwich. It's an experience. I have to say they are very fortunate that their food is so good because the service is very reminiscent of the Seinfeld "Soup Nazi". I watched the lady in front of me get "in trouble" for standing I front of the register waiting to pay, they told her to sit down and wait, that she can pay when it's ready. I in turn was unhappily corrected when I asked for an omelette bagel instead of the name they gave it (omleggie I believe) I was told if I want something to call it by the correct name. Was very happy with the food itself even if the service left something to be desired. The bread was soft, fragrant and delicious. The veggies perfectly fresh and cut just right. Now, I said to myself when I first started reviewing, "Self, there is no such thing as five stars, nothing is perfect". I did some reviews of some pretty good places, but this place deserves five stars. Ok, I could deduct a half point for the parking, it sucks...bad, and it is a little pricey for soup and sandwiches, but... This place is run by a couple I am guessing are from central Europe. She is a sweet lady and he is a grumpy Guss, on the outside. He comes across as this mean, grumpy man. Don't let that fool you, it's just a shtick. He is hilarious. Every time we go (and it's always with my awesome girlfriend) we leave with huge smiles. They are so cool. They show up at about 6:00 am to start baking the bread and making the soups. They are open till 7pm 6 days a week and I swear, they love what they do, you can taste it in everything here. The Poor Boy is amazing, the club is wicked and they usually have 4 - 6 fresh made soups. The soups are fantastic and the sandwiches are phenomenal. I love the food. Sandwiches, soups, pasta (only 1 dish but it's huge and very tasty)... all excellent. The secret to the sandwiches is the amazing bread he makes. The owner is a bit abrasive but bearable. The wife I think would chase you off with a broomstick if they didn't need to sell food. The dining experience here is fairly poor for the few times I've eaten in the restaurant so I usually get take out. My biggest beef is that I once ordered a sandwich, asked them to add bacon and got charged an extra THREE DOLLARS for the bacon. The explanation (from the wife)? "It's like ordering another sandwich without the bread" and I'm not exaggerating about the quote. There isn't anything special about the bacon. It's regular store-bought bacon and they don't even fry it up on the grill... they use one of those microwave trays for it. The food is the worth 4 stars. Great food, with the occasional terrible service. My preference is to do take out only. The sandwiches and soups are homemade and it really comes across in their delicious selection. The owner there even hand-slices the bread right there in front of you. I have never really been a big soup person, but they are absolutely fabulous there. Since my fiance and I were the only dinners in there around lunchtime, the owner decided to sit beside us and talk to us the entire time we were there. Wandered over while getting my skates sharpened at the new Cyclone Taylor. The owner gave me a hard time cause I was wearing my Oilers t-shirt, but it was all in a good spirit. Got myself a large Louisiana poor boy sandwich. Oh so good. Bread, meat, sauce, veggies were perfect. Decent price for a great fresh sandwich. Decent size too as I had to take half of it home to eat later cause I was stuffed. Next time I need to try their selection of soups which looked good. A family walked in and they were also treated like they had just walked into their grandpa/grandma's place with lots of cheer and good food. Great sign. A very frequent customer of the Soup Plus Cafe for about a year, I returned the first time after a three month hiatus from Downtown. I didn't even get close to the counter before the Owners enthusiastically shouted my name from behind the counter! What a great welcome!! After a brief catching up, they served me a great Borscht soup I've had this side of Grandma's house! As with all their dishes, each mouthful makes you wonder, "what has he done to make that taste so unique and so damn good"? How can someone make soup and tuna sandwich taste so awesome? Unassumingly situated in a strip mall between a hair salon and a laundromat, Soup Plus serves the best food made by the best people. During my visit it was clear that the couple running this establishment genuinely care. They knew their customers and their customers knew them. From cracking wise to asking about the family, these two have formed very real relationships with their innumerable regulars. Even first time visitors were greeted with attention and conversation unlike any business I have been to or heard of. This alone made the visit worth while, and that is to say nothing about the food... ....which is the best. The menu consists of soups, sandwiches, a pasta choice or two, and a few other morsels. I ordered a meatloaf sandwich. The sandwiches are assembled in plain view by the man - who is clearly skilled in his craft. The sweet, soft, golden bread is made on site from scratch. It was piled with heaps of perfectly cut fresh veggies and just the right amount of dressing. The meatloaf was moist, seasoned to perfection, and sliced almost as thick as the bread. The women had about half a dozen soups on offer and she provided samples to aid in selection. All are made in house, all were delicious, and I settled on split pea and ham. The sandwiches are big enough for two meals, but too delicious to last longer than one. The soup rounded out the classic combination and was incredibly satisfying. Any attempt to describe further would only cheapen the experience. Without any qualifiers, this was, and is the best meal I have ever eaten - bolstered ever further by the genuine hospitality and low price. All of this was had a few dollars less than a sandwich chain would charge for less food of an incomparable quality. If you eat food then Soup Plus is for you. read more

This is the most amazing place I have ever ventured to. At the suggestion of a friend, we entered the halls of Soup Plus. Tucked between a laundry and a hair salon, my expectations were low, but wow - you will not be disappointed! A mom and dad restaurant, in a true sense of the word, not only is the place hospitable and fun (the owners tend to crack a joke or two) but the food is incredible. Their pasta is a remarkable treat, and their sandwiches are the largest, freshest, and meatiest I have ever seen. After ordering a mushroom soup, I ventured deeper into the menu - their soups are well known to be superb and fresh, with a wide selection of 4-6 served daily. If you are lucky enough, you might even have a peek at how they are made - mostly a pile of mushrooms, carefully chopped by the man in the apron across the counter. The hulk of a sandwich served in this store knocked my socks off. The fresh veggies are crisp and perfectly paired with dressing, and the meat (I had the louisiana and I can only highly recommend it with the highest regard), was served at teh perfect temperature - perfection for a meat eater such as myself. I will come back, again and again. The prices are extraordinarily affordable, the atmosphere is homey and warm, and the staff is kind and welcoming. Food is always amazing but when you go, you have to have the time to wait and to enjoy it. It is worth it. They are a European couple who have been operating it for years, no other staff. Anyone who complains about service or wait times or not answering the phone is just not getting the fact that they are a small family run business. Hands down the best food in Vancouver, period! There are a few places that one can eat like a king in Vancouver, and you can throw some fine dining establishments in there - Le Crocodile, The Pear Tree, L'Abatoir - but those places also charge an arm and a leg for those high quality foods that one yearns for. This, on the other hand, is a simple soup and sandwich place. Its decor is nothing special, homey. Its proprietors are immigrants, and if you've ever worked with immigrants then yes, you know that they talk and behave differently than you or I do - that's part of this amazing diversity we have! But the food!!! Oh, the food!!! By far, this is absolute luxury in terms of what is simple, humble lunch offering. The bread is made in house, and has delicate, rich fragrance. The soups are absolutely incredible, and what makes them so is that they contain the actual ingredients they're made with. For example, the mushroom soup is made with actual mountains of fresh mushrooms, and if you're lucky, you get to watch the chef chop them right in front of you. There are something like 5 or 6 soups made fresh every day. They are changing practically daily and follow the seasons, so sometimes, if you're in the right spot at the right time, you'll taste the divine pumpkin soup. The bacon is baked in oven, and then quickly zapped to warm on bacon trays for your distinctly rich, towering BLT that is balanced just right. The meatloaf is divine! The meatiest of meatloafs I have ever had in a sandwich. Those thick slices of goodness are unmatched. The louisiana sandwich is perfectly smothered and the meat is incredibly finely prepared. The tuna melt is also a fave -for this one, high quality cheese only. This melted sandwich is so flavourful that it will knock the socks off of any tuna fan. The list goes on and on. I could sing odes to Soup Plus. Big, hearty odes that will be heard across the city. But instead of a towns crier, I choose to eat some more delicious foods. It is not a renovated hipster spot. I stopped by here to grab a poppyseed bagel and cream cheese as I was running errands. What I got was that (delicious by the way), banana bread and some great conversation with the older gentleman who served me. I am not sure if this was the owner however the conversation we had about family and the current state of the world was a genuinely nice experience.
