    Alternator Wire Cap Missing
    Michelle R.

VERY SLOPPY WORKMANSHIP! You MUST question everything they tell you! First of all, I'm using my wife's Yelp account since I don't have one. Do not go here if you have even the slightest care about your car. I've now gone here four times and the last two will be my final two. I take a lot of pride in both of our cars and have always kept them in top shape. I've typically taken my wife's Lexus to the dealer for service but since it only needed an oil change I figured SCAC could handle it. I received a call shortly after dropping it off for a few additional "recommended" services in addition to the oil change (spark plug replacement, rear diff fluid change, brake fluid flush, and transmission fluid change). I agreed to all but the spark plug replacement. After reading the owners manual of my car, it clearly states that this has a "closed transmission system and therefore the transmission fluid does not need replacement"...ever! I'm not sure how they replaced it on a closed system or why they would recommend something that the owners manual clearly says not to do? You must question everything they recommend! Now on to my last experience. My alternator was going bad on my FJ Cruiser, which I had personally tested and confirmed before I brought it in. I am mechanically inclined and could have done it myself, but quite honestly didn't feel like it and was willing to pay someone else +/- $150 in labor to do it. They quoted the cost of the new alternator at $360.00! When I asked why it was so expensive, there was no valid explanation. I had already shopped for one the day before and let SCAC know that Tustin Toyota had them in stock for $244.00 for the exact same spec alternator. I also found the same spec alternator (OEM Denso) online for $170.00. They said they would check with another supplier and call me back. Within one minute I received a return call that they could get the same spec alternator from a different supplier for $255.00, which I agreed to (still pricey but not worth arguing anymore). They replaced the alternator that same day. After picking up my car and driving home, my Check Engine Light came on after about 10 miles so I decided to take it back to SCAC the next morning. Upon my return, I showed them the CEL and also that the mechanic failed to reinstall the plastic cap that covers the main power wire from the alternator (I knew it was there when I brought it in since I just saw it the day before). He said he would check with the mechanic to see if they could locate the missing cap, but to this date I never heard back that they found it or replaced it (nor have they offered to buy me a new one). This forced me to buy one myself from Tustin Toyota. It's concerning when a mechanic fails to reinstall all of the parts you had on your car to begin with! If it broke or was lost during the process, I get it, just tell me that you broke it and need to order a new one! I also noticed they failed to reinstall the in-line fuse holder back in the mount when they disconnected the battery. That's not a big deal but just shows sloppy workmanship. As for the CEL, they plugged in their computer and saw some error codes, but rather than offer to diagnose the code they said they would clear them in the computer to see if that solves the problem...nope! After leaving and driving about 10 more miles, the CEL light was back on. Rather than take it back it back to a place where my trust was diminishing, I decided to find the problem myself. I hooked up my own OBD2 scanner and retrieved the error codes and was able to research possible causes and narrowed it down to a problem with the Purge VSV valve. I was prepared to buy the $60.00 VSV valve and replace it myself, but wanted to do a visual inspection first. Wouldn't you know that the vacuum hose that connects to the VSV valve was completely removed which is what triggered the CEL from the beginning!. This VSV valve is located directly above the alternator, so it was most certainly pulled off during the alternator replacement, but never reinstalled (they are held on by clamps so there's no chance of it falling off by itself). Thank god I didn't spend hundreds of dollars more with them to try and diagnose their own poor workmanship! On a final note, they don't use any protection over your fenders when working on your car, so there was grease and dirt all over my drivers side fender when I picked it up (and I just waxed it 2 days prior) I don't expect them to wash my car, but at least protect the car when you work on it! Between the missing parts, very sloppy installation, and lack of response to these open issues, I will not be returning here again. To those people who believe this is a "fair", "honest", "trustworthy" repair shop, think again, you are being fooled.

Since my truck was out of warranty, I wasn't sure where to turn. I reached out through Yelp and heard back from Ed almost immediately. He had a good idea of what might be wrong and invited me to bring the truck in for an assessment. After inspecting it, he identified damage (caused by rats) to the transmission wiring harness, which had unfortunately caused internal damage. He walked me through everything clearly and provided a very reasonable estimate for a full rebuild. Throughout the entire process, Ed was easy to communicate with, always professional, and genuinely helpful with his advice. What really stood out was how he went above and beyond after the repair. I was told this type damage might be covered under my comprehensive auto insurance. Ed then took the time to work directly with my insurance company--providing detailed documentation and expert insight. Because of his effort and experience, the claim was approved and the repair ended up being fully covered. That level of service is rare these days. I truly appreciate Ed's honesty, professionalism, and follow-through. He did exactly what he said he would do and then some. I wouldn't hesitate to come back or recommend him to anyone in need of transmission work.

I brought it back twice and both times I was told everything was fine. During the rebuild, they replaced (and charged additionally me for) replacing the transmission mounts, but a few days after I picked up my car, my motor mounts broke and the engine shifted while I was at a red light. I brought it back immediately and, after a test drive, I was told everything was fine. A separate shop found the entire engine was tilted, and I paid out of pocket several hundred dollars for their diagnosis and installation of replacement motor mounts - mounts I was told should have been replaced along with the others. I brought it back several months later because my car was hard shifting whenever I went downhill and the alternator continued making a high pitched noise. After a test drive on the flat roads around Santa Ana with Ed, was told that it shifted like butter. He advised me to warm up the car before driving, which has not helped at all. I was also promised that my alternator would be exchanged for the price of parts from O'Reilly and that it would be about a $150. I was ultimately charged me $429 for the third party alternator (definitely not a Denso) that makes high pitched whirring sounds when I press the gas pedal. Other minor issues: scratched my window tint and took 6 weeks to complete the work, fixing the alternator last and costing me 3 extra days of rental fees my insurance wouldn't cover. I ended up paying $1345 out of pocket to their shop and insurance covered $4000. Also, I incurred an additional several hundred dollars to the other shop to fix the motor mounts and for the extra days of rental. Ed is really nice and communication was not an issue. Overall, though, I did not have a great experience and I'm reminded of that daily when I drive my car over the hill to get to work, as the car will inevitably jolt as it shifts gears going downhill. It doesn't leave me a good feeling that the transmission repair will last. For this reason, I can't recommend this shop for transmission or general repair work.

I was extremely stressed because dealing with vehicle problems was the last thing I wanted on my mind while trying to enjoy my vacation. I spent some time on Yelp reading reviews for several transmission shops before deciding to call Transmission Masters. One of the reasons I chose them was because they've been in business for more than 48 years and had consistently great reviews. I also like reading the one-star reviews because, let's be honest, you really can't please everyone. I just wanted to find an honest and trustworthy shop. I called and spoke with Ron right before closing time. He took the time to listen to everything I was experiencing, explained what he thought the issue could be, and told me to bring the van in the next morning. Their shop opens at 8:00 AM, but when I arrived around 7:45 AM, they were already there working on vehicles. When I walked in, Ron remembered our conversation from the previous day, which immediately made me feel comfortable. He scanned my van but didn't notice anything unusual. He reset my ECM and another setting, and thankfully that solved the problem. What impressed me the most was that Ron didn't charge me a dime for his time or help, even though I genuinely wanted to give him something for helping me out. I drove all the way from Disneyland back home to Northern California without a single issue afterward. Ron, if you happen to read Yelp reviews, I truly want to say THANK YOU for your time, honesty, and knowledge. You helped turn a very stressful situation into a positive experience, and I sincerely appreciate it.
