I had a great experience at the South End Buttery restaurant location, and decided to try the Annex Cafe out with my friend. They are located within a block of each other. The cafe's menu is smaller and has a larger emphasis on coffee and pastries, but there are still some decent brunch options. It was a freezing day outside so my friend and I got hot lattes, they were pretty good. For my brunch I had their bacon egg and cheese on a buttery biscuit- it was great! Though I've had better breakfast sandwiches, the biscuit on this one definitely stood out to me. My friend got a bacon and chive scone which was incredible. I want to try more of their sandwiches. The location on Shawmut was packed so I decided to try this place as they are just blocks away from each other. First off the price was steep, an oat latte and a breakfast sandwich came out to $19. I'm used to their prices so I wasn't too surprised. However the very small breakfast sandwich I was presented with was nowhere near worth $11. I got the buttery country biscuit which came either a single price of bacon and bread that is closer to a ciabatta roll than a biscuit. It was an extremely thin biscuit. I would pay max $7 for that so I was extremely disappointed. The biscuit was also very dry which is weird considering it was 8am. I will probably stick to the shawmut location. read more

I walked in for the first time to get a coffee. I ordered a decaf iced latte. The gentleman then took the order of the girl behind me. She ordered soup and a sandwich. He filled her order before mine, okay, maybe she was in a hurry? Then he filled my order incorrectly. Nice looking place, but not the best service. read more

South end buttery was a place I heard about from many of my coworkers, and I was so excited to try it! Cappuccino was great (i have high standards for coffee), but the food was meh. Everything in the menu looked wonderful, and I ended up getting the Caprese breakfast sandwich (which looked really interesting). The sandwich was good, but nothing special (the biscuit was not great, but the filling inside was yummy, loved the slow roasted tomato-even though it was cold). My dad got the scone and overnight oats, which were fine, but also not great, and my mom felt similarly about the quiche she ordered. I think there are better local cafes in Boston, but it's a nice neighborhood joint for the south end! read more

I ordered a small vanilla latte with oat milk & it was almost $7. It wasn't much better than the Nespresso coffee I make at home. I didn't see any upstairs bar or downstairs basement that other reviews mentioned; perhaps they renovated in the past few years. Stopped in on New Year's Day for some caffeine after brunch. Was able to find easy street parking on a quiet holiday so that was nice. The people behind the counter were friendly and efficient. My group got a few double espresso and a chai latte. The espresso were okay, for me it wasn't quite hot enough I like it to be steaming hot. There is a counter to eat food and a few tables as well. The staff didn't properly take my order and kept chatting, causing delays that made me late for my busy morning schedule. The food I ordered should have been ready in 5 minutes, but they made me wait 20 minutes without even checking my order. I was extremely upset, especially since they didn't even apologize. Great breakfast place! Started with the bakery basket, which include the best versions of banana bread, a blueberry muffin, and a butterscotch scone. I had the Buttery Breakfast with eggs, sausage and two perfect pancakes served with real maple syrup. My wife had a chocolate chip orange scone. The food itself is always good but the most recent time I ordered takeout I was given the wrong order and charged an additional $8 for the cashier's mistake. When I got home and realized I did not have the correct order, I called hoping to resolve the issue and the employee did not offer any sort of compensation (monetary or even correcting the order). South End Buttery has long been a staple of the great culinary scene in the south end, but my concern is as they expand they are not doing a great job maintaining quality control. I had an iced mocha, it was fine. However, I was extremely disappointed by the attitude of (seemingly) the manager on duty. He was standing behind the (only) employee making coffee, telling him to move faster, get things done quicker, that he was holding up orders etc etc. The manager only helped prep the coffee cups while he stared down the employee, even though there was a break in customers at the register. This is a sign of bad leadership and an unprofessional working environment. I will not be back. read more

Myself and 3 other friends made a reservation here when we were visiting Boston. The reservation required us to put down a credit card. The website said if you no show, you are charged $25 per person on the reservation. We realized we wouldn't even get into Boston in time for the reservation, so we called (3 hours) in advance to cancel. They said they were going to charge us $100 even though we WERE NOT no showing. It says no where on their website that we would be charged if we called in advance to cancel. If its their policy to charge you even if you call and cancel, they are not transparent AT ALL. read more

Awesome! Great alternative to chain breakfast spots and delicious options for unbeatable prices. Favorite menu items are the frittata, quiche, and yogurt parfait. Every thing here just tastes high quality, and I can't believe I don't hear more about this spot! I'd say the frittata is one of the best breakfast options on the menu for myself; not too heavy, flavorful, and perfect portion for breakfast and includes two slices of buttered sourdough. I'm hoping to try some other items soon, but it's hard to stray from my now favorite go-to casual breakfast! read more

Cute little cafe/bakery and was really busy even early in the morning! We had the coffee, Nutella cruffin, avocado toast, and breakfast burrito. Nutella cruffin was great, and breakfast burrito was really nice with crispy bacon inside. Not as big of a fan with the avocado toasts for all the seeds, but it's more personal preference more than anything else. Overall still a great experience! Will recommend the cruffin and breakfast burrito. We'll probably try more pastries next time. :) read more

*3.5 stars* Came here for dinner and decided to sit upstairs so we could enjoy the sunset and people watch outside. Our waiter was polite and attentive and all the dishes had a nice presentation. We ordered the burrata with seasonal strawberry jam (can't remember the exact wording?) appetizer, it was good but had a little too much coriander and the strawberry mixture was bizarre--too much vinegar that made the strawberries almost taste like they were going bad. For dinner we ordered the lobster pot pie and hanger steak. The lobster dish was a deconstructed pot pie at best. It was a bowl of lobster soup/runny pot pie filling with a biscuit on top. The biscuit was mostly hollow inside and a little dried out and left us craving an actual pot pie. The hanger steak was cooked perfectly but extremely chewy. Really nice hostess & waitresses but rude counter people. Saturday brunch was good, interesting take on eggs benedict with manchego on a biscuit. The hollandaise was fresh, but could've used a little somethin....maybe lemon? My friend's potatoe's were awesome, all nice and crunchy, next time I need to order those. A little on the expensive side as other's have mentioned. When I was leaving, I stopped at the coffee/cupcake counter and the employees were not very nice about what line we were supposed to be forming, after we'd been waiting on the "wrong side" and they acted like they were bothered by having to take our order. I wish my experience was as great as others. I came here for breakfast one morning during the weekday. I had the avocado toast which was, sad to say, not edible at all. The lime was over powerful, so sour that I couldn't even eat it. And it was filled with pumpkin seeds, TOO MANY that every bite was crunchy where my teeth started hurting. I really tried to force myself to eat it because it was more than $8 and I didn't want to bother them. But boy, that was the worst avocado I've ever had. My friend asked for a smoked salmon bagel but the SALMON WAS MISSING. Are you kidding? We did not pay $13 for a salmon bagel just to have the salmon missing...
