This place is really convenient from where I live and is considered decent because there's not much sushi restaurants around the neighborhood. Everything is good and has a reasonable price. Lacking 1 star for the consistency of the rice. I guess it's because there's different chefs every time but overall it's decent. Could be better but it satisfies your sushi cravings! I have to admit, I've only been to a handful of sushi bars in Chicago, but this is easily the best one. Comparable prices to most places, and they have a pretty good lunch deal. I've been here 2 more times after my initial visit, and the hot, pierced/tattooed server recognized me, which was a bonus. Very friendly and helpful. Willing to make suggestions. I've had about 10 different rolls here and they were all good. If you're new to sushi and a bit scared, go with the Philly. This place is great! Best sushi south of Roosevelt! The rolls are so delicious. It might be off they beaten path but it's definitely worth the trip. I was there with my daughter and I had ramen my daughter had the stir fry udon. My bowl of ramen felt like a joke. Big bowl less than half was ramen with 3 pieces of pork chop, and the flavor was very bland. FAST FOOD QUALITY RESTAURANT AT UPSCALE RESTAURANT PRICES I am very surprised that this restaurant got such high reviews here on Yelp. I rate this restaurant 1 star (and I am being generous). We rolled up here around 6:00 pm on a Friday night with the most optimistic of mindsets. Upon entering, we found that the restaurant was empty, save for a single table. Not a big deal, it was early and this restaurant is new so it couldn't be that this restaurant was subpar or anything...I pondered this as we waited for a hostess to show up and seat us..and waited. And waited. And waited. We stood in the front of the restaurant for 5 minutes with no sign of anyone coming to seat us or even working in the restaurant? Finally my boyfriend went to the back (almost inside the kitchen) and asked if we should just seat ourselves...or...? Not a good sign but I am eternally optimistic about the pictures of the rolls we saw in the window and the Sushi buffet! We quickly glanced at the paper menus (take out menus which serve as the official restaurant menus, apparently) and we were a bit surprised at the prices. The prices were comparable to nice Sushi/Japanese restaurants ( Rolls were $9-$15, Ramen was $12, Seaweed Salad was $7). Okay, a bit surprised because the restaurant wasn't very "nice" but whatever, if the food was good I have no complaints. So I inquired about the Sushi buffet only to find that it wasn't offered yet? What's going on..then why is it listed on the Paper Take out menus? I get that they are new but they served Sushi now and had a Sushi chef...I'm not sure what other material you need to offer the buffet? Fine, whatever, this is not my poor business model doomed for failure. I'll take the Ramen. Oh, but wait - the Ramen is not offered. WHAT? SERIOUSLY? I settled for my third choice of 3 sushi rolls and yes.. I am half expecting to get food poisoning, based on my experience at this restaurant thus far. I ended up ordering the Spicy Salmon Roll, Spicy White Tuna, and Spicy Scallop. I couldn't even rate each roll because they all tasted exactly the same and even looked exactly the same. In fact, I asked the server which was which..and he didn't even know. My boyfriend and his sister ordered some noodle dishes which were $12 or $13 and were so bad (they were starving and ate 25% of the dish). Finally, we ended the night with some tempura cheesecake that was $8. Now I love desserts and I don't mind paying $8 for good dessert, but this was some Dominicks' cheesecake (not even the Sara Lee's or Eli's from Dominicks, but Dominicks brand. On second thought, maybe it was Aldi.) dumped in tempura battered and fried. Terrible. Quality-wise I would say the food was 2 stars (1 star for the actual quality, 1 star for not getting food poisoning as I had expected!) Service was a .5 star and prices are a -1.5 star. I really can't believe they tried to charge the prices that they did for a such a low-end restaurant (in all aspects). They even tried to make the restaurant look upscale by having some decorative lighting and some pleather chairs. Unfortunately, they couldn't even execute faux upscale as they chose to use diner tables (not kidding here) that didn't match the pleather chairs. The plates were clearly from Chi Cafe and they didn't even provide glassware for our drinks. We got the same plastic cups you get when you order a soda at Freddie's. By the way, they only offer Coke products but we got them in Plastic Pepsi cups. I will never ever ever ever ever come here again. read more

My husband and I regularly frequent this place. We typically get carryout lunch here, though do eat in with some regularity. Their dinner prices are pretty typical of this type of sushi place (maybe a bit pricey for the quality/amount of sushi, but not outrageous), but lunch is where they really shine. You can get 3 rolls and 2 pieces of sushi or sashimi for $15, which is enough to feed one very hungry person, or (in our case, usually) two moderately hungry people. I've never tried their specialty rolls, but I can vouch for the tastiness and freshness of their standard salmon, tuna, tempura, and eel rolls. They don't skimp on the fish at all, and their service is quick and their servers are polite. Word to the wise: you pay extra for tea, which I was caught off guard by the first time I came! Otherwise, do give this place a try, especially for a quick, delicious, and ridiculously reasonable lunch. read more

I tried both the ramen and the sushi. I would give the sushi 4 stars but the ramen only 2. So, on average, I give 3. The sushi is pretty good and I think it is worth to go to South Kawa for it. bookmarked south kawa for awhile now and since i was craving for sushi, i decided to come and give this place a try.. it's street parking so make sure you pay the meter! when we went in.. we were the only people there... service was nice and friendly and our waitress was attentive... we got the sushi buffet which was around 25 dollars without tips and tax yet.. so yes.. it was a little on the pricey side compare to other sushi buffets in the northside.. i like their appetizers.. the misu soup was good.. the bufflao shrimp and rock shrimp was not bad.. the sushi on the other hand was ehh... most of the sushi is covered with too much sauce which ruins the taste in my opinion... also a lot of the sushi was fried... it just wasnt my cup of tea.. dont think i will be coming back here again.. but for the people that is not into that much raw stuff and like saucey and fried food.. give this place a try... read more

All I can say is "meh.". Definitely experienced better. Most dishes seemed over priced, particularly the non-roll items. A couple days ago, I went for light dinner there and found that it was a so-so place. Decor was alright, but not evenly slightly impressive. I love KAWA! I've never eaten in the restaurant because I always get it delivered! My favorite has to be the dragon roll for sure. I recently tried the sweet potato roll and it was surprisingly good! Living only a couple of blocks away we decided to give Kawa a try last Friday night. Our expectations were not too high and we were prepared to move on to Nana if necessary. We judge Japanese places by tempura and sashimi. The vegetable tempura was very good. We also had the rock shrimp tempura which was tempura shrimp drizzled with spicy aioli. In our opinion the aioli was over-applied, probably should have been on the side. The deluxe sashimi platter was good. For some reason they slice their sashimi really thick. Some of the lettuce that served as bedding for the sashimi was discolored brown. We liked the vegetable-based salad dressing. We were hoping for udon noodle soup but they didn't have it. They were gracious enough to take back the yaki udon we mistakenly ordered instead. Kawa is surely a major improvement over the previous denizen of this space, which was a very poor faux-pho shop. Servings were generous. It's definitely worth checking out, with the caveat that you reign in your gourmetish expectations. Kawa is a BYOB, fyi. read more

Having read the reviews here, I was expecting something mind-blowing. After all, my two buddies and I came in to compete to see just how many each of us can eat. Needless to say, I was seriously disappointed. The fish was dry and rubber, the all-you-can eat menu was limited (they didn't even have unagi) and everything else was just poorly made rice-wads. For $5 less, you can enjoy fresher fish, unagi, and an assortment of hot appetizers at the Sushi Para chain. read more

We live in Bridgeport but usually travel up North for sushi but my husband bought a groupon although we were sceptical we figured we'd try it. Whoa were we in for a surprise, this place is awesome! We went to dinner on a Sat night, we were quickly greeted and given our table, the waitress was cute, kind and beyond helpful. We ordered a whole slew of sushi, soup and rice for our son. Everything we tried was different and quite literally exploded with flavor! The owner is young guy who made the rounds and briefly chatted with every table, that's smart business. I'll admit we went a wee bit off our budget but in the end we left satisfied and pleased. I'd recommend you north siders take a quick trip to the south side and check out this neighborhood gem. Its great to have a great sushi restaurant on the south side, it's quite literally been a long drought of good places. All in all the place rocks! I had the all you can eat, eel set is really good, and another sushi set that had a bit of crunchiness to it, yakuza or something else. I had sushi para M before, and this place is much much better. Great addition to Bridgeport! Solid good, fresh sushi. Now I don't have to waste gas to go get sushi. Personally, I love the lunch specials they have to offer. Sushi sashimi condo is just $15 for a lot of fish. Seaweed salad is a little pricey for a small amount, and there is barely any sauce on the specialty rolls. I think they just want to order more sauce on the side for $0.50 but I have never had maki's such minimal amount of sauces. I never thought about ordering more sauces when I went but I didn't especially like any specialty rolls mainly because it lacking sauces. The regular rolls are nice and big. I really like the spicy white tuna. I will be back and back again. read more

Great little spot in Bridgeport. We had quite a few rolls, and enjoyed them all. One thing I did not like was the house salad with ginger dressing. I always look forward to the ginger dressing, but theirs was just very bland. Service could deiniteiy improve, although it is not too bad. I will definitely be back. read more

I love all you can eat sushi and decided to try this new restaurant when I had visitors on a few different occasions. There is a big variety to choose from, including appetizers. The sushi has generous portions of fish and/but is garnished with a lot of sauces. I personally like the sauces but I know not everyone does. Our visitors are preferred this restaurant over others we have taken them to on previous visits. The service is great and the atmosphere is enjoyable. I definitely recommend trying this place at least once. read more
