They are rather addictive but in the best way. I appreciate that they have half roll options for days when I'm not eating too much. The ambiance is middle of the road. It's usually pretty loud and the tables are small. I always feel bad for whoever is seated at the tables by the door because you will have people standing over you while they are waiting for their food. Every roll I've ever gotten literally is cold, even the tempura shrimp rolls, I disliked the tempura chicken rolls because they were cold, and just not very flavorful imo.. outside of this my favorite is the spicy tempura shrimp rolls, dragon maki the fried gyoza are small but so good. The sushi and appetizers are served on paper plates, and the place is always full and bustling. The food is cheap, which means that the restaurant is frequented primarily by a college-age population, which can be a plus or minus based on your preference. I went for the all you can eat dinner. I was on a date and didn't want to be taking a lot of pictures. The tables are close together and I felt that I was eavesdropping on my neighbors table. The first thing that we noticed was there wasn't a lot of fresh fish rolls on the menu, a lot of tempura based rolls. As stated in other reviews, the rolls are served on paper plates which seems to soak up any oils or "juices" from the roll. The wasabi and soy sauce is already measured out. The service was good. I am very saddened by my dine-in experience. The staff were very nice, attentive, and fast. But... I ordered sashimi set, udon, and spicy garlic ramen. And the sashimi set comes on a paper plate. And it was at this moment, I knew it was going to be bad. The fresh fish interacting with a paper plate is a disaster for taste reasons and the interaction between moist and dry. Spicy tuna maki, and sashimi was meh. The udon comes in a paper bowl. Again, hot soup and paper bowl is like mixing toilet paper and water. It's just going to get messy. In this way, the udon noodles don't get warm enough because the container can't hold enough heat. Plus, the flavors mixing with paper is not good. Last, the spicy garlic ramen has so much potential, but if it comes in a paper bowl, it's just not going to be good. it's going to have instant ramen vibes, and you don't want that. read more

This place is absolutely racist and unprofessional. I am an African American woman who went to Shinju Sushi with my two sisters after work for dinner. We arrived around 7:10 PM and were told there would be about an hour wait since it was busy. We didn't mind -- we saw how crowded it was -- so we went to Target to pass the time. By 8:30 PM, we still hadn't received a call, so we returned to check in. The host told us it would be "a little longer" and that we were next since every name on the list was already scratched off except ours. As we were leaving, we saw another group of people (all white) being seated right away after giving their name and number -- the same way we had earlier. We knew they had just arrived. We didn't say anything because we didn't want to cause a scene and waited outside instead. About ten minutes later, we got a call saying our table was ready. When we came back inside, we were told the table was still being cleaned and to wait another five minutes. While waiting, another white family came in and was seated after only five minutes. When I asked why they were seated before us, despite our much longer wait, the hostess gave a weak excuse. At that point, my sisters and I decided to leave. We refused to spend money at an establishment that clearly doesn't respect all of its customers equally. They have a few large group tables, but everyone sits at the two-seat tables further in the back... the tables are extremely close together so you don't have any privacy in your conversation. Me and my date sat next to a couple on the left who were quiet their entire dinner, and I know it was because they didn't have any privacy. When they spoke, I could hear every word they said without wanting to. And then to our right, we had a solo person whose body was angled toward us and it she quietly listened to everything we said. They need to put privacy dividers between each table... America is not Japan or China, we cannot sit that close to each other like that. The sushi was not good. Bland and flavorless tuna and salmon that was not very fresh. Stale, squishy wasabi. Flavorless ginger. And they served it all on paper plates... most of the food stuck to the plate... The flavor profile was just plain vegetables, and I felt like they could have done a better job. Really, it tasted like they rolled up some asparagus and avocado in sticky rice and seaweed. Would not recommend. The sweet potato maki, on the other hand, was really great. Their vegetable tempura is always crispy and tasty, and the sweet potato tempura in the maki roll was just that. The flavor was great, and it paired well with the sauce. I would definitely order this one again. I was also not really impressed with the bubble smoothie. It's the rice - the actual sushi 寿司 - that failed us so horribly. The second we put a nigiri in our mouths, we grimaced at the off putting taste. The worst sushi I have ever had... which is comparable to the sushi made in Chinese buffet. The restaurant was too cheap to have an alcohol license, which is the same as Chinese buffet! When I walked in to pick up my order, I was greeted by the most aggressively racist person I've dealt with in a very long time. He assumed that I, because I am Black, was trying to get a free meal and before he could ask my name demanded to see my GrubHub order. I showed him the order and he still had an attitude and denied that I was there to pick up something legitimately. I usually can just tell the ladies upfront my number and they give me my bag but I really do think this man should be fired. It's a bad look for the restaurant. At one time this was the go to place for sushi. All you can eat lunch for $14.99 was such a great bargain that the wife and I would often eat here whenever we were in Hyde Park or just had a taste for sushi. we hadn't been here since the pandemic hit and were really looking forward to dining in again . Although the food seemed to be relatively the same, the presentation was absolutely horrible. The fact that the lunch is now $17.99 wasn't really an issue but I knew that things were somewhat awry when they brought out our miso soup in a styro-foam bowl thru both my wife and I for a loop. We looked at one another, shrugged and began eating. We looked up to see our wait person coming towards us with a plastic glass of water while her assistant had our lunch on paper plates, Add to that the plastic utensils and we were just mortified. Food is eaten with the eyes almost as much with the mouth and nose and what we saw before us took away a great portion of our enjoyment of the food. Presentation is everything when we're eating out. Supply chain issues, rising costs and profitability are more than likely the reasons that they would give for this but, at what cost???? they could have presented the food in the aluminum to go containers that they had stacked along the counter and it would have been better. My teenagers were treated extremely rude. My son got sick and vomited. They told him to clean it up or they were charging him an additional $20. They wouldn't give their credit card back until the vomit was cleaned up. My mother had to come and threaten to call the authorities on them before they gave the credit card back. They are racist.
