For 10 years have I entrusted my beloved dogs to SMPC, and I used to LOVE them. But unfortunately, since Dr Mahoney has been a part of the team I have had several breedings screwed up by him. Several times they have put the wrong frozen semen into my bitches, and since I'm not allowed to oversee the procedure, I find out after they have inseminated my bitches with the wrong semen, and by then it's too late to do anything about it. I will STRONGLY recommend that you find a more professional repro vet than SMPC before you too become a victim of their professionalism! read more

...Overall a great establishment. Dr. Gavin needs to learn how to have a better response to the problems that her staff generates for her. She is incredibly unprofessional and horrible to talk to. No amount of apology will ever equate or balance out the horrible experience we just had. I will never give this establishment my money again considering the "highway robbery" and ethical violations that have occurred through sheer negligence and rudeness. Due to covid-19, people seem to be taking less ownership and just shoving people off and taking their money for whatever they can because everyone is experiencing hardship and they are just "doing their jobs" but hold no responsibility or ownership for the establishment. Our Doberman is/was pregnant. The staff seems to think that they can just schedule people for whatever seems appropriate and expect them to pay without understanding what the client actually wants/needs. We wanted to see how many puppies our dog was going to have - so they scheduled a $150+ ultrasound, and then said she is too pregnant to know, come back for another $155 X-ray next week. - as customers - we feel gouged and taken advantage of. The staff made us wait over an hour past our appointment time to gouge us, insult us, and hold our dogs xrays ransom until we paid. ...I'm sure the people here are great animal lovers and are great "vets" but the code of ethics during the current pandemic really shows peoples true colors. We tried to resolve this issue before coming to the appointment but refused to handle it properly. Actual quote: "I just came into work today to take people's money. I don't know what the history of your visit is prior to this. So I can't help you." Overall terrible experience. Maybe the owners will remedy the situation but until then these people are running a racket for certain breeds of dogs and act like it's an inconvenience to them that we ask for a certain level of understanding and given the circumstances of our situation. read more

I am absolutely shocked at how terribly rude 'Briana' is that answers the phone at the South Mountain Pet Center. I am so incredibly happy I called & experienced her before just blindly setting an appointment. I recently moved to the Utah area in late February. My Maltese-mix is moving out this weekend. Her health & care is of the utmost importance to me. I've been researching Vets and boarding options in the area and unfortunately made South Mountain Pet Care my first call. Briana is extremely rude. If this place is that rude to human's who can actually voice their feelings, imagine how they treat your animal(s). read more

We have gone to Dr. Pew for over 20 years. He and all the staff are wonderful. I have no complaints.

My sweet(evil) darling(monster) dog Clue has horrific allergies. I've literally spent thousands on vet bills trying to figure what the heck is wrong and how to fix it. Im not made of money. So this was a huge sting. (Get a job you lazy bum!) I met a few other bull terrier owners who said, "oh allergies, this is the place to go" so i went. And i can't say enough good things. Sure i spent a couple hundred bucks having an allergy test done. But it was about a thousand dollars cheaper than what i was going to have to pay for an allergy test with the other speciality derm doc we had been taking her to prior. The diagnosis, she's allergic to pretty much everything. Mostly environmental. So they came up with a couple different plans for her. We're trying the cheaper route first and so far so good. I never felt like they were trying to get more money out of me but actually wanted to find a plan that would be best for my wallet and for the dog. read more

The mantra "You get what you pay for" is true here. In just a quick perusal, the costs here compared to others are a little higher. But it's WORTH EVERY CENT! The docs here, Drs. Pew, Gavin, and Kolbaba, are the best anywhere. Sometimes I forget--until I talk to friends who live far away who can't easily come here. ANYTHING reproduction related, from ovariectomies to AIs, is their specialty, but they are my "Go To" vets for anything that needs a quick lab result, as they have their own lab on site. Bree is awesome and happy and helpful, even at "oh-my-heck" in the morning. If you just need vaccines, you can go anywhere. But anything else, here is the only choice! In an answer to the comment about "being worked in", perhaps some people don't understand that this clinic is like going to a specialty physician--you don't call a cardiologist and expect to be seen the same day, unless it truly IS an emergency. These vets are the best, and that is reflected in how full their schedules are every day. Last, but most definitely not least, this is a clinic that understands purebred dogs, dog shows, and those sorts of dedicated dog people. Dr. Pew used to breed and exhibit dogs himself, and is now also a respected AKC judge. No one here will read you the riot act for having an intact dog, though will nicely educate on the important decision and pros and cons. read more

I'm providing 2nd hand report from my wife who took the dog in. Vet was stumbling over words/thoughts during visit. He blamed it sleep deprivation due to a newborn. Honestly, anyone who has had kids can be empathetic to that, but most of us don't have jobs as a doctor during the day. While our visit wasn't surgical or something that required the vet to be in best form, I now have deep reservations of ever taking my dog there for something of that nature. YMMV read more

The office staff is unprofessional and lazy. Sounds like that comes from the top. Their intention was to drag five owners into a small room so they only had to give care instructions once which is ridiculous because we're talking about 1 minute of information. This place turned me down and would not allow me to bring my puppy there because they have a discrepancy with the breeder of my puppy.... makes no sense. It's not my fault nor the puppies because someone doesn't pay their bills. It's shows how idiotic this place is and Un professional. Don't Bring your puppies to get their ears crop !!! Took my Doberman Pincher and Dr. Carl Pew damage his cartilage . Performed 2 reconstruction surgeries and ask me to bring it back 4 months to fix it ! so I did call and now he is saying 6 mo but that at this point is not fixable .. he is not taking any responsibility for damaging the nerves or cartilages. When the rest of the litter is doing great ! Funny that on his page you will see pictures of Dobermans with perfectly crop ears. My beautiful Doberman looks like if he has a problem because his ears just lays in the top of his head. read more

The women at the front desk is mean and needs to take a lesson on customer service. Never had a good experience there when dealing with her.

Our two dogs have had very few medical issues over the years, but one of our dogs recently acquired an allergy which we had been trying to figure out. He had always been a little more itchy than others of his breed, but earlier this year, it got bad. His face was getting scabbed up, and one ear tip was cut open, and we couldn't get it to heal. We were trying all kinds of homemade concoctions, but with out success. His face was looking pretty rough, so we finally broke down and decided to take him into Dr. Pew. The diagnosis was allergies, which then led to a staff infection as well as a yeast infection. Our poor guy was in rough shape. Luckily, Dr. Pew was able to get him on the right medications right away, and he went from our poor pup who wouldn't eat, to a happy, hungry, normal Ridgeback. This change was almost instant. We also have the allergies under control as a result. Two weeks later, the same dog developed a lump in his upper right gum by his fourth premolar. Dr. Pew told us it was a dried up infection, and just needed to be cut out. We thought it might be an abcess tooth, so we went to another doctor who specializes in teeth work for dogs. We booked the surgery, our dog went in, came out, the tumor-like flesh was sent to the pathology lab, and the results came back showing that it was a dried up infection exactly like Dr. Pew had told us. Our other dog has had a couple of small growths on his skin, so we decided to take him into Dr. Pew just to be safe. Dr. Pew took one look at them and said, "they are warts. You can remove them, but if you do, you risk having the warts come back in groups on other parts of the body. Sometimes worse." We decided to wait on the warts, but we trust Dr. Pew, and I would not be ashamed to promote him any day of the week. read more

The veterinarians are wonderful! I loved taking my dog here for her routine exams. However, they said they "work you in" for urgent matters/sickness but every time I've called the Vet Tech who answers tells me to go somewhere else. Every encounter, even in office, that I've had with a Tech has been awful. I'll be taking my dogs care to a company who will be there for ALL of her needs. read more

We just got a 9-week old puppy from some friends in our neighborhood. A few weeks before we got him, they had taken him to South Mountain for his first shots. He's due for some more shots, so we decided to try going to South Mountain for subsequent visits. My wife called to set up an appointment and the lady (receptionist? - not sure) was very abrupt in saying that they don't accept new clients. My wife explained that she only asked because the website says that they do and then asked the lady if she could recommend a different facility, and the lady hung up on her. No biggie - there are closer facilities to where we live. However, if the way my wife was treated on the phone is any indication of the care there, I wouldn't recommend it. read more

So I gotta say I love this vet! Very reasonable prices even on reproduction services. The vets are very nice and take their time to discuss your pet. The staff is very knowledgeable about all aspects of Canine reproduction. Then just to add to how much I love this place they sent the most convenient and helpful dog vaccination and information card to be used at the groomer or boarding facility. It's very nice heavy laminated and displays that your pet is up to date on vaccines plus your contact info. I highly recommend this vet to any breeder looking for a good vet. read more

Dr. Pew has been caring for my dogs for over 10 years. He is an excellent doctor and surgeon. Dr. Gavin is a great addition to his team. He and his staff have helped my hounds with regular care, sports related injuries, and with their reproductive health. He and his staff are a very skilled and caring team. This is my favorite Veterinary I've ever been to. Dr. Pugh cared for my bull terrier for 12 years. If you have a bulldog you can't go to a better vet. Office staff is great I always felt my dog was in the best hands available. read more
