My girlfriend brought me from Raleigh, NC to Philly for my birthday and made reservations here. When we arrived, I was turned away because I had a hoodie under my peacoat. I was dressed neat and appropriate for the freezing weather, but the host wouldn't seat us and offered no alternatives. I respect a dress code, but the way it was enforced felt rigid and unwelcoming. We traveled out of state, took an Uber, and planned this evening weeks in advance. The lack of flexibility or hospitality ruined the night before it even started. Most upscale restaurants use discretion and work with guests especially when someone is clean, presentable, and layered for cold weather. That didn't happen here. read more

Came here August 2025 with my husband for an anniversary dinner. Brianna and her band was playing, great music and she was a little funny and interacted with the audience so that was great. The place was romantic and we had a great time. Parked on the street, no issues. Quiet that time of night. The food was Delicious!!!! I was shocked, my family is huge and from the South (NC and LA) and I felt like I was at home. We had the fried chicken and grouper for entrees and the peach and burrata salad and the seafood boil ( special) was out of this world!!! You hear me?! If you are thinking about going...Go! We've tried to book a reservation here three different times and was unsuccessful. My girlfriend's obsessed with trying the food here, so I decided to give them a try. The famous Mac n cheese, too salty for my liking. The jerk turkey wings, nothing jerk about them! Not spicy at all and salty. My collard greens tender but lack seasonings. My rice was good, her rice she didn't like at all but the waiter was nice to switch the rice for broccoli which was good. I highly recommend South for all occasions. I was heartbroken when Warmdaddy's and Relish closed, they were my go-to when meeting up with friends in Philly. South replaces both by far with its fresh ambiance and separate performance space, combining the two. Driving in from Jersey, parking is a little tricky but I've always been able to find parking on the street over -or- on Broad after making certain maneuvers, lol. Our entire party was not available at arrival so we were invited to sit at the bar. The bartender was very pleasant and offered us the menu. There was a mixup on time (with one of our guests) and we weren't ready to be seated until an hour and a half after our reservation. There was a performance that nice so we were given the option to sit at the bar or the chef's table. I personally think the chef's table seating was a stroke of luck for us. Our host, Quiana (sorry for the misspelling), was phenomenal. She gave real life suggestions which really helped with our ordering. We of course ordered the cornbread - which we should have all ordered one for ourselves. We also shared the macaroni and cheese, which Quiana highly praised. I liked it, but it was a little heavy on the garlic for me (and that's only because I'm garlic sensitive). Quiana also made mocktail suggestions - but I ended up taking her recommendation for the sweet tea. I could have drank a gallon. Now, I knew where I was coming after returning from North Carolina. I did not specifically want southern comfort food. But I was in luck! Quiana shared the details of the surf and turf special and I went for that. I'm so glad I did...although I don't eat red meat - the little corner I tasted of the steak with the sauce was delicious. I ate the 5oz lobster tail so quickly, I really couldn't tell you about it, lol. I do recall wishing I had drawn butter to go with it. The asparagus and mashed potatoes were delectable. The first experience I've had at South was such a positive one that I can't wait to come back! Immediately upon coming in to wait for friends joining me, I was greeted by the warmest host and bartender who made me feel welcomed. I can say nothing but GREAT things about this restaurant. We were about 45mins early for our reservation but they were so kind enough to seat us early. Our server was extremely knowledgeable of the menu and best selections to try. We started off with the 4 cheese mac&cheese and OMG, it did not disappoint. For our mains, i got the fried chicken plate and my friend got the Maryland crab cakes (not pictured). Both were amazing, although my plate could definitely feed 2 people we left with food to go. When buying tickets for this past Thursday's show, Anna S. and I had to book them via EventBrite's website. It looks like for most ticketed events, bookings are made via TOCK, but for a few of the events, tickets will need to be booked through EventBrite's website. Ticket prices do not include the cost of your dinner. If you want a more interactive jazz experience, get the tickets. When booking through EventBrite, Anna S. and I were able to select our seats for the Jazz Club, so we opted for a table in the back. If you just want to listen to jazz in the background (and not as loudly) while you eat, then don't get tickets. You will need to make a reservation for the dining room, though. This past Thursday, our party of 4 enjoyed a very entertaining jazz show while eating a delicious dinner off the Restaurant Week menu, which was basically, selecting 1 appetizer and 1 main course from the regular menu. And dessert was a sampler of 3 pastries, not to share, but for each person. The fried green tomatoes seem to be a hit among fellow yelpers, so each of us ordered that for our own appetizers. Served with 3 little shrimps, the 3 thickly cut slices of fried green tomatoes were drizzled with shrimp remoulade and tasted delicious. For our main courses, everyone had something different. I had the fried chicken, Anna S. had the salmon, and our significant others had the catfish and short rib. The portions of these main courses were even more generous than the appetizer! WOW! Everyone enjoyed their food for the most part. I know I definitely enjoyed my fried chicken. It was half a chicken, and so much food. My collard greens were also nicely cooked. I did not have much of the sweet potato casserole, not because it was bad, but because I'm just not a fan of candied sweet potatoes. My husband's catfish was a bit dry, but he still devoured his entire plate. Last but not least, the service at SOUTH was impeccable. Shout out to our server, Evan! We have never seen service like this before! From start to end, Evan was very attentive and never intrusive. But what he did next really amazed us. We ordered some solid drinks and the Low Country Gulf Catfish & Shrimp; the portion sizes were very filling and the catfish were perfectly crisp yet not oily. In all, service was great and the food was better. The show with Lori Williams, was awesome. Note the jazz room is rather small with limited seating. However, that makes for a more intimate show. If you are going to visit for dinner, I strongly suggest going early (6 or 7 PM vs. going late (9 PM or later). There will be a different clientele. Also, check the menu. It is short and it varies. We were seated immediately upon arrival and taken back to the music area, which is separate from the main dining room. The table for 2 had both seats facing the music, which was awesome. I've been wanting to try South for the longest time and I finally was able to during their restaurant week. There were so many great options to choose from for their Restaurant Week menu. I got their cornbread which was hot and delicious. As for others, I got to try their chicken wings, turkey wings, crab bites, and their desserts. Love the meats of course and their sides were good but I have go say, the favors were very well seasoned to the point I definitely can taste a good amount of sodium. I saw everybody had it so I was like I know this is going to be good. And before I finish I will say that I arrived around 9:00 sat down around 9:30 and order by 9:45. Kitchen closes at 11 they stop taking orders at 10:30. So once I got my entree my chicken came out Luke warm. Like my sides greens and yams were piping hot but my chicken felt like it had been sitting out for a while. But I was so hungry I didn't even say nothing. Arrived around 8:15pm and was greeted by a friendly young lady who asked us to wait while the previous show was wrapping up and then they'd clean up. Once inside and seated, we were greeted by our server who very high energy. Drinks were ordered and the raspberry drop was not a favorite of the tables. I ordered Uncle Hershel's and a proceed gets donated to an HBCU until Feb 2023. We ordered 2 orders of cornbread and Mac n cheese. I could've lived off of this the entire evening. The cornbread is thick and comes out hot with butter atop. So good!!! The deviled eggs were pretty good as well. Ordered Jambalaya and felt like it could've used more flavor. We went during restaurant week and they had a fixed menu for $40 pp. we ordered braised beef, fried chicken and the fried fish w/shrimp. The fish and shrimp were placed on top of a tomato/corn sauce that I wasn't a fan of but soon got used to it. The meal was good and appetizing to me. Someone else in our party said one of the fried pieces of fish was hot another and another was a bit cold. Ordered dessert but by this time we needed it packed up because we were so full. It was our 9th year anniversary, so we decided to go to see Julie Dexter at South Restaurant to celebrate. I made reservation for 2 for the show and dinner on 3-15-26. ( so I thought). I paid 153.00 for tickets at checkout did not realize I paid for 4 tickets in lieu of 2. When I got to the Restaurant I informed I the staff of the mistake, the hostess said she will get the manager. I spoke to the manager and informed him of the mistake and asked if I could be refunded for the two additional tickets. He said , from a "business perspective" he was only able to refund one ticket because four were originally reserved and asked that I meet him "half way" because he only seated two - he lost on the purchase of the two additional tickets. We spent handsomely on dinner and drinks. I think he could and should have returned the purchase of the two ticket, the restuarant/club was fully booked. So yes, he retrieved the 35.00 for the lost of the oneticket, but also lost the patronage of a loyal customer. We spent 155.00 for the ticket and $174.00 for the cost of dinner. I really enjoy South and feel like they have done done better by me. read more

The fried chicken entree is described as "BUTTERMILK FRIED CHICKEN Hot-honey drizzle, creamed collards with smoked turkey, sweet potato casserole & a freshly-baked buttermilk drop biscuit for $25" The chicken could have been a slight bit juicier and had a little more hot honey drizzle, and the collards could have been a bit more creamy however, they both were fairly good definitely 8/10. The biscuit wasnt too dry but needed butter so I used the honey butter from the cornbread and it paired well. The sweet potatoes however, were really sweet which I like and tasted as if they had marshmallows melted in them! 9/10! My cocktail was the SOUTHERN STRAWBERRY JAM, comprised of "Bulleit Bourbon, fresh strawberries, strawberry jam and freshly squeezed lemon juice" for $16 which I really enjoyed. It definitely tastes like strawberry jam and bourbon and if you like blackberry bourbon smash cocktails you would probably like this. The cornbread came with "Steen's cane syrup" and honey butter for $9 and it paired nicely with the chicken. Definitely moist, was just a little undercooked due to my entree coming out of much earlier than I anticipated and my server offering to bring it out right away without me knowing it wouldn't be fully done. My fried chicken came out before my cocktail or cornbread which isn't ideal for me. I like the experience of dining...I like tasing my cocktail and processing that...then my appetizer to get me ready for my entree...and then my entree. I had fried chicken on my table before I even had water lol I get dinner may be condensed for the show and less interruptions but I arrived atleast 30 minutes prior to the show. They have an automatic 20% gratuity which I dislike at restaurants because I tip but I can't control if others do too so it's fine atleast they inform you on the menu. Overall, I would return to try different dishes and definitely another Jazz Show, but I might have to stick to the same signature cocktail! Delicious! read more
