Amina is definitely a place Philadelphia needed. My friend suggested it knowing I love some really good food and this menu absolutely did not disappoint. The food was honestly a 10 out of 10. The collard greens were so good and full of flavor, and I got the smothered turkey wings which were amazing. Definitely ask for extra gravy because that gravy is too good not to. My friend got the shrimp and cheesecake pop and the portion size was actually really solid. I also cannot forget the cheesesteak beignets because wow... such a creative idea and they were amazing. I asked for the sauce on the side and it initially came out wrong, so I had to flag someone down to fix it, but once they corrected it everything was perfect. Now the only downside for me was definitely the service. We really were not checked on much outside of taking our order and bringing drinks. Anytime we needed something like boxes, extra help, or corrections to food, we kinda had to wave down bus boys or random staff members passing by. A few more table check ins would've made the experience so much better because the food itself truly deserves top tier service. Parking can also be a little annoying, but I did notice there's a garage across the street which helps. Overall though, I absolutely loved this place and I'm so happy my friend brought me here. I had no idea Amina's had changed locations! So, this is a review for the new location in Northern Liberties @ 1102 Germantown Ave. 19123. A few friends and I decided to go to Amina's for a early dinner. I was surprised to learn they had relocated from their old location in Old City. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Their New location is beautiful! We decided to share: Sticky wings- these were very good, crispy and a little sticky but the perfect amount of crunch. 9/10 Cheesesteak Beignets: A nice ball packed with steak and cheese. 10/10 Cornbread: Nice and warm. Crisp and buttery around the edges. Pairs nicely with my meal. 9/10 I decided to try the Oxtails, with sweet potato puree, collard greens and a side of mac and cheese. You get two meaty, nice size oxtails that are fall off the bone tender 10/10. I loved the Collared greens with a slight vinegary kick to them 9/10. The Mac and cheese was delicious as well. This is a hard dish to rate, because I think mind is better, but I'll give it a 8/10! One of my friends got a Grilled Watermelon Salad. I tasted it, and surprisingly it was delicious. 9/10. One day when I need to be watching my weight more closely (which is now) I would consider getting this. The portions were good, enough to take home for another meal or to share. The wait staff was great! Very pleasant and on time with our food. The prices are fair in this high priced market. Unfortunately when I rate any place I go, I also include how convenient it is to get there. I am a driver and drive just about everywhere I go. I would not recommend driving to this location. I've been wanting to try this place since it's original opening/location some years ago. So when thinking of where to take a boyfriend for a dinner/happy hour just the town of us for his birthday, I threw this place out as an option and he went with it. Now to the most important part - the eats.... So we really enjoyed all the food we had. The Peri Peri wings were cooked pretty perfectly with a crisp outside but tender and juicy inside. We liked the concept of the Cheese steak Beignets as they did marry those two dishes well. The Mac and Cheese was doing what it's supposed to - cheesy, gooey and tasty. He wasn't the biggest fan of the tacos - think just wasn't his thing - but I liked it and that it was a different take wit the tortilla being a fried tomato. She also checked on us frequently during our meal. I went with the oxtail cheesesteak omelette, which comes with toast and home fries. If you are not drinking, they do have a mocktail list which I don't remember the name of the drink itself, but it is made with ginger beer. My omelette was absolutely delicious. Happy I got to check out Amina while visiting Philly. Park across the street in the plaza lot if there isnt legal street parking available. Anf pay attention to the time because there is definitely someone checking license plates. We made reservations and had a shirt wait. The decor is beautiful, afrocentric. I love the big photo as soon as you walk in. The beignets were nice and soft, 1st bite the cheese came out and got a nice flavorful amout of steak to go with it. The devil eggs, were also perfect, we added shrimp to oura. Felt like I was at someone's granny's house after church. Meals: Out of all the meals we all really liked the picnic basket. It really comes out in a picnic basket and this was scored 10/10. The braised Oxtails were tender, falling off the bones and had good flavor. The yams were sweet and good but definitely not what I was expecting with the Oxtails. The smothered turkey wings were good but we really liked the brussel sprouts more than anything and the salmon was good. Dessert: Vanilla ice actually came with a big ole pie. The food here is quite good, and the decor is beautiful with a great music playlist, but the service left quite a bit to be desired! Our group of 6 arrived for our reservation, and the friendly hostess was able to get our table prepped for us within an insignificant amount of time. Our server came and took our orders. After this, it all went downhill. The entrees came out piecemeal, so it was one of those things where everyone is awkwardly waiting around until everyone gets their food while your own food gets cold. On top of that, waffles came out without syrup or butter, home fries and toast came out without condiments, and our server was no where to be found so we had to flag down random employees to request condiments, silverware, or just to tell them to find our server so that we could place an order for more drinks. At one point, she brought out the bill and the entire table was confused, as no one had requested it and we still wanted to place orders for drinks and desserts. When we finally did request the bill, pay via the QR code on the receipt (which showed a $0 balance), and left, the server finally ran out of the restaurant to flag us down, claiming we still had a balance on our bill. It was the fastest I had seen her move all day. Regarding the food and drinks, I enjoyed every item I ate. The oxtail omelette was good and the collard greens are phenomenal. I ordered a hot tea that never came out until my actually entree came out even after bringing drinks, food etc. I had to ask about 5 times and each time she never bought it. I was so happy when I learned that they moved to Northern Liberties and was so excited to patronize within a week of the new opening. They are located in the old location of SIN Restaurant which is more convenient. We came on a Friday evening with a relatively early reservation at 6:30pm and it was naturally lit as it has large windows with beautiful African & Caribbean deco. The restaurant had very few patrons as it was only 1 week to the day of their opening but within an hour it was packed and the dj was there playing some classic 90s R&B. The food was delicious! Travelled to Philadelphia for a national conference and our state group met here for a group dinner. Super vibey. I loved the decor. We were seated quickly even though only part of our group reservation had arrived. But it did take a while for someone to take drink orders and bring water to the table. We went to Amina last evening to douse my husband's southern food cravings. We ordered the cornbread skillet, braised oxtails, and Nigerian hot chicken sandwich along with a round of cocktails. I thought the food was average at best. Cornbread was soft but there was no freshness to it. The oxtail meat was tender and juicy but lacked flavor. It seemed to me that the just served premade food on the plate without even warming it up. The cocktails took a long time to and were served after we were done eating the cornbread and while we were halfway done with the mains. Pretty sure I have never been to a place before where they bring the drinks last. The drinks weren't even fancy looking and the place wasn't packed so not sure what the hold up was. The most disappointing thing was we still had drinks on the table and a little bit of fries (that came with the hot chicken sandwich), that we were munching on, when the server just shoved the check on the table and took the fries away without asking. The table started with the Deviled Eggs, and I sipped on a Hibiscus Tea that was absolutely perfect--refreshing and slightly tart. For my starter, I went with the Banana Chia Pudding Parfait--a nice, light, and slightly sweet way to kick things off. The main? My Braised Oxtail Cheesesteak Omelette. Yes, you read that right--oxtail + cheesesteak + omelette = Philly deliciousness . The meat was tender and well-seasoned, the eggs were fluffy, and everything came together beautifully. My friend and I visited Amina for restaurant week yesterday. We came early to our reservation and were still seated quickly which was great. We ordered drinks that took over 20 minutes to arrive and we had to ask our server when they were coming. Our appetizers and drinks arrived at the same time. Our main entree arrived over an HOUR after we were seated. Other tables around us were seated and received their food before us. Our server never came to check on us or update us about the food, we had to hunt her down every time we needed her, and ask where every part of our meal was. The drinks were a 10/10. The food was overall a 7/10 taste wise but the portions were small. My friend ordered the oxtail main entree, that came with 2 pieces of oxtail and sweet potato. At first everything was great; we ordered the cheesesteak beignets, which were my favorite because the flavor and cheese just melted in your mouth. We also ordered deviled eggs but were given jalapeño cornbread instead. We didn't complain since our waitress had recommended the beignets and they were so good, but the jalapeño cornbread was just plain and nothing special. For my main dish I followed her suggestion and got the smothered turkey wings, which were amazing. The turkey was juicy and tender, and I loved the brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes on the side. For dessert we tried the caramelized apple pie spring rolls, but they took a long time to come out. While waiting I reminded the waitress it was my friend's birthday, and when the dessert finally arrived she just dropped it off, quickly said "happy birthday," and walked away. I understand Saturdays are busy, but there were four of us and we only got two spoons, no plates, and then she handed us the bill while we were still eating apple pie with our hands, saying other people were waiting for the table. The 20% tip built in our bill felt unfair since the service was rude. Visited Amina for brunch on a Sunday afternoon. Our reservation was at 12:30pm but it still took us a bit to be seated. I'd say the theme of the entire visit is that the restaurant was understaffed. Once we were seated, it took a while for our server to stop by. We asked for a drink menu and eventually had to borrow one a table near us. I ordered coffee but after I finished my cup it remained dry without any offers for a refill or a chance to ask for one. Similarly, my cousin asked for a pineapple juice that never arrived. My braised oxtail grits arrived lukewarm but my other cousin's catfish was piping hot. The inconsistencies kept mounting and, to add insult to injury, the same server who took forever to bring us the bill and never checked in nearly chased us out of the restaurant assuming we had not paid when there was plenty of cash (including the tip that she didn't deserve but was already built into the bill) sitting on the table. That was the fastest we had seen her move all morning, so she's capable of hustling...just not for the sake of customers. Came for the brunch specials with a friend on a Saturday...Loved the seasoning on the chicken! The waffle was pretty good as well. Definitely was a good balance of sweet and savory! And the passion fruit mimosas were just what we needed Our waitress was cool, but I really enjoyed the bartender, very personable! Didn't care for the automatic 20% gratuity as it was only 2 of us. I had the opportunity to visit this black owned restaurant for Philly restaurant week and everything on the menu was delicious! We started off with the cheese steak beignets and shrimp tacos. We also ordered off the restaurant week menu and had the most savory scallops that come with a fried tomato and crème brûlée. Now the portion size was small however, it was so good we just ordered two. For the entrees we had the braised oxtails and Amish chicken very flavorful. Seasoned just right! The service was also good. We received a warm welcome from the hostess and our bartender Nadia was great! This place is small yet intimate well worth visiting! I made a reservation about a week in advanced for a birthday dinner Sunday October 19th at 2:30pm. I arrived at 2:15, there was no staff around to greet me so we just stood there waiting for a hostess. After about 5 minutes of standing and looking around, I made eye contact with the bartender and he advised we would be helped shortly. After another 5 minutes of waiting I see the bartender and a waiter have drinks with other customers having a great time laughing and we were still standing. We continued to wait until we decided if we would continue to wait. We ended up leaving. I found it very professional to have no host present and to be ignored by other staff members. I booked a reservation based off of a recommendation as I live in NY and was unfamiliar with the Resteraunt scene. Safe to say Amina did NOT leave a good first impression at all and I will not be returning. read more

When my Black consultants are in town to meet with the Black Director (that'd be me) about Black issues we're going Black owned every time. Every time! Amina was on every who's who in Philly list and my friend gave a glowing review on their catered orders so we went for it. Made a dinner res for 6pm on a weeknight. Let me give you the rundown: Service was great. The folks working the hosting station were fantastic and gave us the lay of the land. The vibe on the inside is kind of upscale moody, especially at the tables. Fat and Accessibility Things to Note: online I was concerned about the chairs. They appeared to be velvet with side arms. In my experience those are typically narrow in the seat but I thought there's no way a place is serving Black folks and not having seats to fit a variety of bodies and bottoms. When we got to the restaurant the seats were fine. I had room and the sides weren't rubbing against my legs. Whew! If you need something armless I would speak with someone directly beforehand. I indicated a preference for that on my reservation, but I didnt need to follow up because the chairs were OK. YMMV. The bathroom is down a steep, narrow staircase. I made it fine. My companion who has some mobility issues found it a bit more challenging. I wonder if this is the only one in the restaurant? If this setup presents a challenge for you, I'd ask before you book. The food: Good googlymoogly it makes no sense for something to be this good while also not being heavy or overly seasoned. More on that later. My friends got: -Deviled eggs -cornbread -fried chicken basket -salmon I got: -po boy cheesesteak -Brussels sprouts -called a late audible for the Mac n cheese and am so so so glad I did. My mama needs to step her game up - just sayin' All in all, we ate like kings - it legit looked like a thanksgiving spread. And we didn't get the itis after which was a win since I had to drive an hour back home to Jersey. There are a lot of internet cooks - and Yelp reviewers apparently - who say if you ain't sneezin it ain't seasoned. But my companions and I admired the restraint in the dishes because the flavors could shine through. This food was really, really good, no Kleenex necessary! read more

A friend of mine and I decided to meet up at this restaurant to get food and drinks. When I arrived the city was busy but I was lucky to find paid street parking. I walked into a busy restaurant that was small and super cute. The manager Ken walked us over to the table, and him and the host were great. Sage was our server, and she was nice. I started with the espresso martini, followed by the old fashioned and both were very good. My friend for the margarita and she enjoyed it. For our meals, I got the gumbo, and she got the turkey wings. Both dishes looked good, and both dishes tasted good. I enjoyed the gumbo flavors and the turkey flavors as well. All in all we had a good experience. The place is a little pricey but qas good. Black-owned and a good crowd. read more

Went for My Goddaughter's graduation! Arrived a little early so we had drinks at the bar! They were amazing! We were seated promptly in a private area. Shay was oour server! She did not disappoint!
