Horrible place, and its run by kids. I went in to the deli side and asked a question on when the chicken breast was cooked. The kid behind the counter wasnt sure which were the normal chicken breast. Once found, literally said to me "oh geeze I dont know man".. are you serious? Asked about other meat he said again.."ahh.. really no clue, im sure they make them every other day *notice Flys inside cabinet* oh ok.. he asked his buddy behind the counter.. he also doesn't know.. went to check out kid noticed me after at least a minute of me watching him scroll his phone. Checks me out. Asks if I wanted a bag and I said no. NOTE* Its covid they have the glass blockers up that cover most of the front. Southdown Marketplace in Huntington is a well located grocery store in Huntington Village with ample parking. The ambience is quite pleasant. What makes Southdown stand out above all others? The produce! If I want fresh fruits and vegetables of superior quality, Southdown is my go to place. I've bought fruit and vegetables from Southdown for very fussy shoppers, and they were always happy with the quality. I tend to buy mixed fruit (chopped fruit in a plastic container), and I've bought from various grocery stores. Southdown has the best. Uncle Giuseppe's is my second favorite in that regard. Southdown's quality is better and cheaper in that regard. Speaking of prices, this is Southdown's drawback. The prices for many things are not at all competitive. You can get better prices two blocks away at Stop and Shop. Even King Kullen sells several of their items at a cheaper price! Four stars for an outstanding produce section. For anything else, I go elsewhere. read more

The worst experience. Went in with boyfriend and Bought 2 dinners for the next 2 days it was chicken balsamic with fajita veggies and riced cauliflower and another riced cauliflower dish. Ate it at work until I found a hair Then my coworkers and I counter another 4 hairs from the same meal. Disgusted. Absolutely calling in the morning to speak with a manager. read more

One my favorite markets on LI. Originally started as the Southdown Supermarket (an IGA store), this venerable landmark of the northern part of Huntington seems to weathered well. Focused upon service of the higher end communities in the area, the place is packed to the ceiling with food. I grew up going to this location in Huntington and I knew from my parents that the butcher was one of the best they could find. My last name resonated in this section and many huge sirloin steaks and roasts came from here with our name stenciled on them. Returning here many years later, I was amazed to find the new owners have dramatically improved upon the old store. I was thrilled to find adventurous items like Delirium Tremens and Kombuca, as well as SaraBeth's and the great meat department. Should I return to this part of the world from sunny Florida, the Southdown will be my first stop for groceries. read more

My go to place for sure. Staff is friendly, knowledgeable and checkout is a breeze. They truly know how to staff in each department and each employee is friendly and courteous. Portions are perfect for single folks like me...but also cater to families. Overall a clean establishment and always has items well stocked. The deli counter has an abundance of salads, ready to eat, and fresh delicious items. Funny and friendly staff too! Oh; and you have to try "those chips". Melt in your mouth wonton-like chips are to die for. Don't leave there without them!! read more

Thank God for Southdown in these difficult times. They have kept up the excellent quality of the food. Some of my favorites are the salmon teriyaki, cauliflower pizza and the salads. The staff remains cheerful and helpful as always! The system to prevent the spread of the virus is intelligent, which is not the case everywhere. They let 20 people in at a time and provide gloves. They also take email orders and deliver to your car. read more

First time in this new store. Store was very neat and clean and offered a lot of choices of premade items. Found grocery items to be more expensive than in regular supermarkets. Deli counter looked very nice but way too expensive. They offer boars head but not one item was on sale. That's usually the main reason I go into a store like that so unless they could offer some sales I probably will not go back. read more

Southdown is a great market style food store that is not a big box place. They have a great deli department that has Boars Head if that is a issue to some, also a whole host of fresh made salads, pre made dishes and some good meats too. The store is pricey compared to a standard grocery store but worth the quality and service. One thing really nice is that you never or rarely have to wait on a line, someone always will open a register if they see you standing for more that a few seconds waiting. Very good service and a decent butcher department too. Good local spot . read more

Kinda like a personal, compact Whole Foods for Lloyd Harborites who need to drop off their endless mountains of dry cleaning and do some "marketing" but are too lazy to drive to a regular supermarket (or to send their live-in nanny, maid or personal shopper to the supermarket). (Which brings me to a "Didja Ever...?" Did you ever see these people that bring their dirty laundry to the cleaners in a big bundle, under their arm, dragging it all over the place? I mean- God created a wonderful thing called a Laundry Bag. Maybe you've heard about it. They cost $4.99 at Target. Sometimes the dollar stores sell them too. Check it out! They come in handy! Very good marketplace in huntington. pros: food is great, all local sourced, fresh, and high quality. Great beer selection, great deli counter, prepared foods are awesome. Meats and meat counter great as well. Lot of desserts to choose from, vegetables and fruits also plentiful. Not usually crowded, can be in and out as fast as you want even with a full week's worth of groceries in tow. The free samples are great too! Fried chicken wings are sooooo good. cons: pricey, it's not like shopping at King Kullen. They do not have many toiletries or other items besides food and drink. Can't really just only go here on a weekly basis for shopping, as you'll need to hit up cvs or duane reade for other essentials. read more

I used to love this place but just had a disturbing experience here. I bought a macro salad yesterday and today was the last "sell by" date. I opened It this morning and it had a horrible smell. One of the ingredients was rotten so I brought it back. The young lady at the store, not an owner, give me a really hard time returning it because she said today was the last date that I could eat it and I shouldn't have waited until today. Not only that but when she went to the store manager with this and complained, she spoke right in front of me not realizing that I was the person who returned the item. I've been shopping here for over 20 years and have never returned anything. What a shame.. they just lost a loyal customer. read more

It's good for somethings and awful for other. I 2nd the loss of TomCat and other better breads. The ones they carry now are awful. Fortunately, TC is still available nearby. Quality produce but $$$. Deli is still strong. Though Fairway is a longer drive, it's by far the better premium store. read more

Fairway wannabee .... decent market with friendly service but the prices are high and selections are limited (items such as breads). Didn't see a terribly large organic presence as was expected. Good if you go for the advertised sales but be cautious about grocery prices. Deli was efficient and fairly priced. I guess I will try this place again in the fall or winter. Easy parking! read more

I loved Southdown and used to always shop there; the friendly & helpful staff, great prepared foods, Deli service without a long line and Prime meats made it a no-brainer. But, and this is a big but, they stopped carrying TomCat breads and the current offerings are far, far inferior. I'm not a shill for TomCat and there are others that are almost as good but not what Southdown is currently offering-soft without a decent crust and no "chew". So I found myself driving over to Fairway (I live within a mile of Southdown) and once there can get the balance of the things I need. I still go to Southdown, but now for the occasional item. I think when you operate a smallish high-end store catering to the affluent you must seek out and offer the very best of everything. read more

this is a great produce supermarket. yes, the prices can be a little high for things but if you shop for whats on sale in their weekly circular, you actually get pretty amazing deals on fresh meats, fruits, and produce. i come here primarily because of the produce. there is a huge variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that most chain supermarkets just don't have and everything is super fresh/ripe. the prices are pretty competitive for fruits/vegetables. the meats also are very fresh and, might i add, beautifully packaged. i usually only get whatever meats are on sale. even the $1.99/lb chicken is fresher/cleaner looking than the ones at chain supermarkets which are sometimes filled with chicken juice from sitting out too long. the deli also has a huge selection of cold cuts, cheeses, and ready made food. their house label meats/cheeses are very good. one thing that stands out is the amount of locally made baked goods. i love the breads that they sell here as well as the huge array of crackers, cookies, biscuits. the selection of store-made dips and salads is impressive. you won't be able to forego going to the local chain supermarket/superstore for other household/kitchen essentials but you will be able to get a wide variety of fresh foods/produce at decent prices. the key is to buy whatever's on sale that week based on the circular and you won't be disappointed with prices, if that's a concern. the service is always fast and friendly, the store is never crowded even if the parking lot looks busy. the owners of southdown also just opened a "greenlawn farms" supermarket recently to replace the bankrupt waldbaums in greenlawn and that place usually has whatever is on sale at southdown plus a bunch more items since its like 3x the size of southdown. i highly recommend both. read more

I prefer this shopping mart to the larger Waldbaums, but that has more to do with my appreciation for more local and smaller businesses. The deli and prepared foods section in the back is delicious, and there are always samples nearby of cheeses, crackers, and dips. They also have tables set up outdoors from time to time with local businesses selling their freshly made products. I hope this place sticks around for the long term. read more

We used their catering department for a recent family gathering and could not have been happier. We were doing a themed party and Joe, from that department, was quite helpful with suggestions. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. The shrimp scampi was a hit with the crowd, their mousaka was a delicious discovery and the coq au vin was delicious as well, with its mushrooms, small onions and pieces of bacon. It was even better the next day as leftovers. We have used the catering department in the past and were always happy, but they have certainly stepped up their game a few levels. sometimes i just hate going into the big grocery stores, and that is when i like this nice little market. they always have samples out to taste new things, flowers outside to bring home for the garden and fresh fruits and vegetables that make a person want to eat healthy... and i have to say, for a small market they are not that expensive,but do have some wonderful items that make me want to go home and cook, bake, and revel in my little kitchen again. read more

***Skip the catering *** even Costco do-it-yourself is better! $800. later and I can't even express to you how mediocre-bad it was. A few things I'd even call terrible - 3 doz. pork sliders @ $75. would be better from a drive threw and just forget the vegetable dumplings. The Italiano chicken hero was soooo dried out I was embarrassed to serve it. The big salad was packaged in a way it had to be taken apart or it would have overflowed everywhere upon opening. Kebabs - meh. Had to add water to offset dryness. I complained and to their credit, the staff tried to rectify but it was too late, hours before showtime. Fortunately I ordered a steak hero from another establishment to complement and that saved the day. Great store, great staff, dreadful catering. read more

Made the trip to downtown Huntington in response to a Newsday ad for PRIME Shell Steaks at $8.99/lb., which is an excellent price. Since Southdown is closer to Fairway where we have been purchasing wonderful Prime Steaks we said why not. Boy were we disappointed, the steaks had more grizzle than meat, and we were lucky that our jays and teeth are still together. The meat was worse than choice quality. One would think that there would be some kind of check on the quality of meat advertised. Sorry Fairway, that we drifted. read more

This store is really nice to have in town. Staff is always very friendly and helpful. Cheese and produce departments are spot on and the deli clerks are can help you with anything around the store.
