Great menu of food and wines. We enjoyed our Saturday visit and will be returning. Prices are reasonable for excellent food.

Let's start with a positive. My server was great. She was polite, respectful, and prompt. Constantly made sure our drinks were topped off. The restaurant looked great. You can tell by the staff dress code and how the table placement they are going for an upscale vibe. The only problem with that is, on top of the nice white cotton tablecloth is a piece of white paper. Let's get to the bad. Spinach and artichoke dip. 1/10. Spinach tasted as if it came from a can. I could've gotten a better one from Sams or Costco. We ate the chips and the melted cheese on top and that was it. Macaroni and cheese. 6/10. It was good but not great. Stuffed mushrooms. 3/10. They are stuffed, battered, deep fried, and then covered in butter. Problem is that the menu says baked so we were not expecting them to be covered in fish fry. Also the fish fry was the only part of it that was seasoned. Also for the price you only got 3. For the same price you get 5 at Longhorn and 6 at Carrabba's. Fries: 0/10. They were not fully cooked. I don't mean: "I like mine crispy and those were soft" under cooked. I mean if they require 7 minutes in the fryer they were down for like 3-4 minutes tops. Side salad: 6/10. Basic side salad. Penne pasta w/ Alfredo sauce and grilled chicken: 3/10. The chicken was flavorful and had some char on it which I liked. The problem is, that was the only thing that was hot. When I moved my dish it felt cold. The pasta and sauce were barely warm. Did I bring any of this to the attention of the staff? No. When you screw up this many things to that level, you're probably not going to be able to correct it. Hopefully I can find another nice restaurant around. Looks like I may have to go to Slidell. My bill was a few cents short of $90. For that quality at that price I'm not going back even for a free meal. read more

We ordered ice teas with extra ice. Came out promptly and was good. That was the end of the great service and food. We ordered fried crab claws. It took 20 minutes to come out and they were lukewarm warm and dried out. Waitress didn't take our dinner order until she brought out the appetizer. We ordered a fried shrimp plate and a steak and asparagus dinner. This time it took about 30 minutes. Again food was not hot. We watched 2 other tables seated after us get their food and finish before we got our dinners. I mentioned that to our waitress and we got "I'm sorry" but no explanation or excuse. The waitress was terrible lied to us when we asked for bbq sauce for the dry bbq beef sandwich. When she was asked for the bbq sauce told us they didn't have any and brought ketchup. When we asked another waitress she brought us bbq sauce that the other waitress told us they didn't have any wow! They also had people singing and that was loud and terrible and definitely ruined the already bad experience. Small steakhouse located on West Canal str. in Picayune MS. Family friendly, reasonably priced, casual. Clean and sanitary. Their hours of operation are a little strange, open from 11-2pm then 4-8pm. I ordered the ribeye rare with sauteed onions and a baked potato. The ribeye was served medium rare vs. rare and imo was a choice cut vs. a prime cut. Overall my experience was okay. The ribeye served is comparable to the quality of a chain steakhouse ribeye. Getting a medium rare vs. rare was somewhat disappointing. read more

Having retired and moved up here from New Orleans we brought our food lust with us. We have certain venues we go to for certain foods and for steak Southern Char is it. Oh yeah, it has a good bar and in a town not long out of being 'dry' that's a big plus. It isn't fancy but I don't taste fancy, the food is the issue and I have never had a bad piece of beef here nor, if I have some instructions as to just how I want that steak cooked, have I not had the staff follow through. In those rare (no pun intended) where there's a beef with the beef they've replaced it without question and it's always been correct. It's been extremely rare and usually minor but it's always been righted. We usually start, even remain, at a table in the bar area, with drinks and appetizers. There's never any perceived rush to hurry up and clear the table, you get the same great and polite service from start to the meal's end. Some of the waitstaff may not be as 'foodie' as the diners but I've found that a polite explanation of what you want almost always, in those rare instances where this occurs, is sufficient and frequently creates a conversation between the diner(s) and the staff that lasts thru the meal. It makes an already comfortable, 'family feeling' place even more so. No disappointments here. read more

Food was good. Service was slow and server was bad. Not a fine dining restaurant. Another loud, "take everybody and yer ma" and talk over everyone in the room kind of place. Came here for dinner, ordered the crawfish kickers which were fried balls of crawfish, spice and stuffing. The pasta dish was good, I liked the crawfish etouffee sauce, something different. The crab cakes were served on top of an overly generous serving of pasta. read more

This is a very hit or miss place, but so is every restaurant in picayune. I am giving it 5 stars because it is a hit more then most places in picayune. Pro: Steaks are usually good Good martinis Clean Sometimes have live music Cons Sometimes the wait staff can be uneducated on certain principals. I never thought Picayune would have such a nice restaurant such as Southern Char. The only complaint I had about the food were the hot crab claws. They were very tiny and not very meaty. The steaks and the side dishes were excellent. Just like other reviews, the service is slow. There is a lot of room for improvement in this area. It didn't look they were short handed but a lot of people just standing around watching other people working. If you are willing to wait, the filets are very buttery. Dining in for lunch we were immediately greeted with a welcoming nature. We chose to sit in the quaint bar area. I ordered a cheeseburger & fries, my husband chose New York strip & fries. Perfectly cooked to order. Portions were adequate for lunch, not too much. Lunch menu isn't that vast but should have something for everyone. Nice variety. Service was very friendly & efficient. Appears the evenings maybe more eventful with stage & lg dining area in the back - excellent for lg groups. Overall pleasant experience, we will be back. read more

Went on mothers day with 12 others they was short on they're specials at 1 in the after noon got they're was seated order 15 minutes later was served about 2:10 place was nice very friendly staff but kinda not to par service I ordered fried grean tomatoes and grilled aspergus if was fine nothing overly great I also had coffee and creme brulee which was oddly cold had a good crisp top but was just a kinda sryup brandy sauce inside it all looked great but was just OK for 12 of us the bill was 235 which was average to high for our group think I would have been happier at olive garden lol read more

Ehhh. I've heard some good things, but after eating there I will not be back. The food was cold and the taste were just not for me. They over loaded all the food with onions and they do not know how to make bananas foster ew. Went here for dinner. Started with French onion soup tasted as though it came from a can and was very greasy. Special of the night was prime rib was over cooked quarter inch thick and burnt. Came with au juice that was very greasy. That was my fathers meal I had the hamburger for 10 dollars was very greasy burnt on outside and pink in the inside also very greasy. Baked potato was good, and service was good. Overall food was poor quality and greasy. Will not eat there again. Also if u look at the pictures of the food on there website it looks nothing like the food you are actually served. read more

If you want a nice quiet dinner this is your place. My husband and I both love the ribeyes, they are a good cut of meat and cooked perfectly. I usually order the augratin potatoes and a side salad. The only thing missing is a good roll, they don't serve bread with their dinners. We love the fact we can have a nice dinner in Picayune. read more

New to the area so I am literally picking a random place a week. So happy I picked this spot last night. We got the crab stuffed mushrooms first and it was the first time I ever got anything with crab that did not have a single piece of shell in it, they were great. This was my second trip to this restaurant. Both times the steak was very good. Everything else is good, not as good as the steaks. I agree with one of the other reviews, it would be nice if the staff was a little more knowledgeable about the menu and if drinks from the bar were a liitle, no a lot quicker to the table. Southern Char does try to stand out as one of the fancier Picayune dining locations, but unfortunately it falls short. Hopefully changes will be made for the better. Service was highly lacking, due in part to two large parties eating there at the same time, which meant smaller parties were forced to wait long times for a server to even come. The glasses are entirely too small for drinks, especially when factoring in how long it took for a waiter to come by. The steaks had potential to be good, but unfortunately, they were colder than supposed to be. Medium-rare does not mean cold in the center. The baked potatoes were very good as a bright side. We were in Picayune MS for Mothers Day weekend which is my Daddy's hometown born there in 1915 - 2008 James C. Davis. We live in Ventura Ca and have amazing food in our region, my husband took me to Southern Char Steakhouse for Mothers Day. It was delicious, perfectly cooked ribeye steak and sides, then the chocolate pie a family recipe was the most delicious desert we have ever eaten. What a nice surprise to find this gem!! I have dined at Southern Char more than three times before writing this review. It's not bad, but unfortunately, it's not good either; therefore, I must give it 2 stars. Now that Picayune has come out of the dark ages, and can legally serve wine and spirits with meals, Picayune residents who imbibe (and there are many) need a nice dependable restaurant where quality food and quality service can be enjoyed along with their favorite beverage. Southern Char management seems to want to provide this, based on my conversations with them, but it has become clear, after more than 3 visits, that the management's standards and expectations are lower than mine. A few tips for improvement: train the staff on how to properly wait tables. Servers need to be more knowledgeable about what's on the menu as well as how menu items are prepared. Timing is everything. Each time I have dined here, I've waited a long time for drink orders and/or salads to be served, and as soon as the salad is served, the entree has been served within a minute or two (bad timing). Keep water glasses filled without guests having to ask for more water, or at least ask guests, in a timely manner, if they would like more water (I always have to ask for more water). The bartender(s) need(s) to learn how to mix drinks properly. None that I have ordered has been prepared properly. Please find a way to keep the temperature of wines at their proper temperature, especially red wines. Serving warm red wine is bad for business and not enjoyable for patrons. Listing "fresh" fish on the menu does not equate to frozen fish that has been thawed and cooked. Nor should vegetables be frozen, thawed, cooked and served. There are plenty of places in Picayune to buy fresh vegetables and fish. If you want Southern Char to truly be a fine dining restaurant, you'll find a way to work these things out. So, it's little things that have added up to an overall forgettable dining experience. I'll give Southern Char another try because I want to support local merchants, and I want Picayune merchants to succeed. I hope management will find this review constructive (that is my intent) and that patrons will add their experiences. I'm tired of driving to adjacent counties to have dinner somewhere nice with wine. I'd rather spend my money in PRC so the city can reap the tax benefit and the local merchants excel. Southern Char could be a winner for Picayune, but so far it is not. read more

DISGUSTING TREATMENT OF LOYAL CUSTOMERS On Friday Sept 15 we arrived at approximately and 6:15, ordered drinks, a small salad for an appetizer, and our meal by no later than 6:30. We noticed a few other customers coming in and ordering as well. Our waitress came by once to get us another round of drinks. Once. That was the only time she came by to check on us. Around 7:15 we stopped the waitress and asked her why our meal was taking so long and we were informed that they had a large party in the back of the restaurant. I told her that the table next to us had arrived the same time as we did and they were leaving, having already eaten their food and paid. I also told her that we were displeased and would like our check so we could leave. Apparently, she informed the manager of this, in turn the manager came to us and apologized, assuring us that our food would come to us shortly. I informed the manager that we no longer wished to dine there and that we would like to pay for the service we received and leave. Then the owner came to our table and apologized, we maintained that we wished to pay what was owed so we could be on our way instead of eating the food that was not yet cooked. He told us that WE were wrong for ordering the food and wanting to leave. This was unacceptable. He told us that no table's order was placed ahead of ours and that everyone had been waiting. I feel that if the order was put in when the waitress took it, we would have gotten it much sooner. For the owner to come out and tell us that we are wrong is inexcusable behavior and maybe he should have addressed the food order queue with the waitress. Surely a large party had reservations, for which the restaurant should've prepared. Also, I feel the manager and owner coming out to confront us about our negative experience was them stalling so our order could arrive to the table. In the past, we really enjoyed coming for the food and drinks. After the way we were treated, we will not be back. I am in no need of the discount you offered as I didn't come for free food. I really want to root for the family that is trying to make this place work , BUT they really need a new chef or to do SOMETHING about the quality and presentation of what they are serving. We have been there 5 times since they opened but have not been back in a couple of years and likely won't until we start hearing some really good things about the place. The steaks are barely ok , nothing special , and can often be cooked wrong. I know that prime is really expensive stuff , but I would be happy to pony up the extra dough if you were to offer it. Sometimes the asparagus is thick and well cooked other times thin and over cooked. The pasta was the most bland and flavorless I have ever had. The timing of food coming out of the kitchen is archaic at best. Dishes arrive for various people at the table at different times and in no special order. Like most restaurants , the coffee was not much more than brown water. The owners are VERY nice people but if they are ever going to make this place work and maybe even make it famous , they are going to have to relent to allowing someone who really knows what they are doing to take over the reigns. Chances are they are hiring family and friends to work there which makes it difficult to be the hard nosed jerk that one must sometimes be to make a restaurant work. I wish them the best.
