The place is a large wooden building that resembles something that would have been built in the 1870's. There are a few bench's and chairs on the front porch to relax in after eating or if you need to wait for a table. They have a general store with some interesting items as well. Schuler's is a buffet style barbecue and all you can eat. Their pulled pork is their best meat. I wasn't really impressed with their ribs though. Don't get me wrong, the were pretty good but I certainly wasn't blown away. Their fried chicken is good but again not much different from most buffets in South Carolina. Their collards are nice and they do offer hash. If you're thinking corn beef hash, it's not that. It's a BBQ or liver hash and it's definitely an acquired taste. I usually put it over rice if I get it. Hash was highly popular in South Carolina for many years. It can't hurt to try it as Schuler's is actually pretty good. Not my favorite barbecue in the area but it's cool place with great people.

Unfortunately, the experience started off poorly and never really recovered. First, parking is extremely limited out front, which is frustrating when you're tired and just want a quick pickup. Inside, things only got worse. The front-of-house staff was shockingly unprofessional. The employee helping us clearly didn't understand her job and had to be corrected multiple times by another staff member--something no customer should have to witness. It created confusion, delays, and zero confidence in our order. We paid about $50 for a sampler, which is not cheap, and yet the same employee argued about giving us the sides because she entered the order incorrectly. If another, more competent employee hadn't stepped in, I'm convinced it would have escalated further. Even then, we never received one of the four sides we paid for. To make matters worse, we were never asked if we wanted drinks to go, and we weren't given plates, silverware, or even BBQ sauce--basic essentials for a takeout order. That's just unacceptable. While waiting, we also watched this same employee tell three separate dine-in families to go sit and wait while she stood there rolling silverware. Completely rude and dismissive. If I had been one of those customers, I would have walked out. This is the first impression customers get, and it's a terrible reflection of how the place is run. Between the disorganization, poor communication, and outright unfriendly behavior, the service was a mess. The only reason this isn't a one-star review is because the food itself was actually very good. The burnt ends and ribs were the standout--absolutely delicious. But great BBQ can't fully make up for such a frustrating and poorly managed customer experience.

The restaurant is quaint and uniquely decorated. However, the customer service could be better. Staff at the counter didn't greet us when we came in, which is a big pet peeve for me. Once we ordered, another staff member bought us our drinks and that was the end of the customer service. We had the buffet, but you can also order entrees from the menu and they also cater. They weren't busy when we walked in which is surprising for a Sunday, but they began to pick up while we were eating- the Mayor even stopped by and ordered a take out plate. The food was good for the most part but needs some tweaks to be great. The best things I had were the mac and cheese, cabbage, collards and bbq pig feet. The desserts looked a little sad, but my mother said the apple cobbler was good. Maybe next time I'll try them on a Friday when they have fried fish.
