Amazing food! They are off the beaten path and the parking lot is small, but the food is absolutely worth it! We had the chicken fried steak and the shrimp plate. My husband and I stopped in at this quaint little restaurant and were really blown away by the food and the warm, friendly owners! We both had a lunch special, I had the Shrimp Creole and he had the Chicken and Dumplings, wow!! They were both delicious, packed with loads of shrimp and chicken respectively, perfectly seasoned, very authentic, real down home cooking! The hospitality is second to none, and the food is impossible to stop eating even though you've been full since the first bite because it's so satisfying, flavorful, and different than anything around these parts. You might have to wait a few more minutes because it's truly made from scratch, but it's worth it. I ordered chicken strips. They were lightly battered and so tender. The slaw was slightly sweet and crunchy. The root rice (dirty rice) was a meal all by itself with lots of meat--so good! You know, at the end of a meal when there's not much left on your plate and you're just sitting back enjoying the beauty of God's creation with your enormous glass of iced tea, you look over at your son's cold fries and think, "I'll just try one, even though it's cold." Cold fries are never good, but miracles happen every day because that fry was so good cold that I finished the rest he had on his plate! My teenage son was so full from their phenomenally large burger, he didn't trust himself to drive home because he was getting sleepy. He normally is begging me to let him drive. They brought us some wonderful cake and pecan pies while we were eating outside, and refilled our giant teas before we left. Tender bits of dark meat punctuated with melting dumplings in a rich chicken gravy. Fish and shrimp special was awesome because they use a traditional southern cornmeal crust- my favorite because of the lovely crunch it adds. Ordered way too many sides: green beans (with bacon of course), carrots in butter, coleslaw (good standard recipe), and the best sweet potatoes I've ever eaten (seriously). They were chunked in a buttery clovey cinnamony sauce that was sweet but not cloying. Also got a couple of ginormous brownies to go. The food here is SO GOOD. Right now they're doing take out but they can accommodate 2 or 4 people on their small back porch, if you like. The chef/owner, Michael, made great suggestions for us and served up deLICIOUS fried shrimp po-boy (the batter was stellar!) and fried catfish po-boy ... Every once in a blue moon you end up finding the perfect hole in the wall joint. The type of place you don't want any of the city slickers and yuppies to find out about because you don't want them ruining it for you. Well Southern Roots Cafe is that place for me. Me and my brother had driven past this place numerous times but could never tell when it was ever open. I was visiting home for the month and me and my brother vowed to try this place before I left town. He told me that he had stopped by a previous month only to find out one of the owners was battling an illness. Sad news indeed so we wondered if this was still the case. About a week before I actually got to try it, we stopped by to see if they were open. There is a small garage in the back were another man runs his car inspection business out of. I walked down there to ask him if he knew if the place was still open and he said it normally is but it looks like the owners weren't there that day. I was beginning to lose hope till two days before I was scheduled to leave town we gave it one more shot. Jackpot! They were open for business. This place is basically the owners home you were walking into. As previous reviews stated, their adorable kiddo hangs out in her crib located in the center of the dinning area. This didn't bother me as this was the sign that I was not at a restaurant rather, someone was letting me into their home for a good home cooked meal. Let me just tell you that the wait here is looooooooooooong so if you're in a hurry, don't come here and especially don't you dare hurry the nice woman and her husband. They are two of the nicest people ever. On this day the special was a chicken fried steak meal which sounded amazing. We got here after the lunch rush so sadly, they were completely out of steaks. So I went with the cheeseburger with fries and okra. My brother went with a chicken sandwich with fries. As I stated earlier, we waited, and waited, and waited for our food. Now my mother taught me better than to ever complain to a southern woman! So we waited the full hour without complaining. When our food arrived, we knew the wait was worth it. My hamburger was fantastic. The cook clearly grounded the meat himself and flavored it completely. My brothers chicken sandwich was easily one of the best chicken sandwiches either of us ever had. He let me get a chunk of chicken to try and it was incredible. It was as if he smoked it and flavored it way before battering it up. Now the fries were probably the only thing we didn't like but fries always come with the meals so. Now, the real mvp for me was the fried okra. This okra was so good, the cook came out to sit with his baby in the crib right since we were the last customers. I literally walked up to him and told him, "Man, that was the best fried okra I've ever had sir." He was happy to hear this news but told me he wouldn't know since he didn't like okra himself. Yes this meal was a great journey. Oh and the waitress who is obviously his wife brought us free cake I am assuming for our patience which was delicious. We passed this place couple weeks back headed to a Las Flores just down the road, and since Im the navigator and the wife is the pilot, Im always on the phone browsing some sort of Social Media, with the Yelp app open in the back round. Im shocked it had No reviews, and yet open for 3 years. Seating is limited to about 20 people. Super friendly Country style service. We ordered our drinks as the waitress started to rattle off the Menu items...we kinda paused and asked if we could see the menu...She went and grabbed the white board and brought it over...Which is actually really a neat idea...They have a rolling menu, that changes daily, with daily specials, which they do run out off items. Everything is from Scratch and really fresh. Both ordered the chicken fried steak just to find out they had only one left...Easy switch for me to Chicken and Dumpling...Wifes side was the mashers and corn...Nothing really special about the corn, was good and hot...Taters were awesome...Chicken fried steak was thick, with a great crunchy batter...Gravy was good, wife was OK with it...its definitely different, but I thought it was really good...Chicken and Dumpling were the Bomb!!...Southern food at its best...Sides for me consisted of Collards, which I will say was the First Time EVER!!....and I really enjoyed them...very slightly bitter, spicy, porky and tender...something I would like to try to make at home...Also went with the coleslaw...wow...nice crunch and great flavor...small little dinner rolls were the perfect fit. Did I mention home made desserts?...they have them, ours was a brownie treat with chocolate chips and caramel...Over heard another patron asking the chef if his mom had made them...Dang good brownie.. Over all it was a great experience, and as we ate a couple more items vanished off the menu, I have no problem making a call to see whats on the Menu...also a great drive on the back roads...Oddly as it seams, they have an car inspection place around the corner out back...We will be back...breakfast is our next target!! read more

It's a coffee place so i asked if they had frappe chinos and he looked at me like i was stupid and gave me a rude blunt response.
