    The 290 breakfast combo
    Elvira O.

Cafe 290 is a no frills, classic roadside diner. They offer your typical American breakfast and lunch options as well as impressive looking cakes and pies. My go-to is The 290 which is two eggs, a choice of meat, and a choice of fries, hash browns, or grits. It also comes with a short stack of fluffy buttermilk pancakes. It's such a filling combo and I share the pancakes with my husband. They are delicious! Service here is always fast and friendly. They keep your coffee cup full even when the diner is packed!

04/2025 - My wife and I came in for the first time on a Sunday afternoon, around 11 AM. The cafe has a small parking lot with some available space along the street on the side of it, by the tire shop. It was very busy at this time, with a lot of parties waiting in- and outside the restaurant. We got our name on a waitlist and waited about 20 minutes. When we were sat our waitress greeted us pretty quickly and we got our order in. I loved reading the small history portion on the menu/table. It was cool to know how long the building had been around and what it was previously used for. Unfortunately the rest of our dining experience went downhill after sitting down. Shortly after placing our order our waitress came to our table and told us the kitchen was running behind and it might be a "little longer than usual" to get our food. At that initial comment we felt fine about it and were willing to wait. 10 minutes went by and eventually an HOUR went by. We decided to stick it out only because there aren't many other brunch or breakfast places in the Manor area (aside from CGs) and we weren't wanting to leave and wait again somewhere else. The issue we had was it seemed our waitress was avoiding us throughout that hour we were waiting. She never dropped by to give us an update or just say anything out of courtesy. The food finally comes out, I ordered basic--hash browns, eggs, bacon and some pancakes. Our waitress sets it on the table, I start cutting stuff up only to find it is ICE COLD. We willingly, without complaint, waited an hour for this food, and it's cold. Nope. Frustrated, I called the waitress over and she took my plate and said she'd get them on it right away. Thankfully the new plate came out on the fly and yes, it was warm. At the end of the day the "basic" options were mediocre. Will opt for just cooking at home next time. We'd always passed the Cafe on our way home and really wanted to try it. We have and unfortunately given this experience we won't be back any time soon. It's been around for a very long time, and I can appreciate its history, but wouldn't recommend it for anyone looking for a quality meal.

I usually order grubhub for breakfast from Cafe 290, but today I needed a late lunch, so I stopped by. The servers are always super friendly and helpful. I wanted something light and easy, so I ordered The chicken salad sandwich and side salad, it was really good. They make the chicken salad fresh in house and it was light and healthy. I can't have raw onion. And I was really happy that this chicken salad did not have raw onion. The housemaid chips are really good too. My go to orders are typically the big breakfast with hot cakes or breakfast. Tacos and the boyfriend always gets the grilled pork chop breakfast plate.

Came in here for breakfast at 11am on a Sunday and we're able to get sat immediately. The staff were super friendly and were happy to make recommendations to us. The food was exactly the kind of hearty breakfast diner meal that we were craving. Delicious and comforting. The vibe was very classic Americana and I think that it was a perfect cohesive combo with the menu and staff. Will be coming back here for more fried pickles!

Hash browns had a terrible taste. Unsure from what. Bad grease or grill not clean. Made whole breakfast undesireable.

The service was horrible and my food was cold by the time I received it. The food is also way too overhyped, not that good.

Once we were seated, we started with two glasses of water which had an odd aftertaste like unfiltered city water. Have to admit they have a very extensive and varied menu which includes steaks, burgers and health conscience meals, but was surprised they don't serve onion rings. I got the bacon cheeseburger which came with plenty of bacon, but no lettuce or tomato. The fries were nothing special and needed plenty of ketchup to make them interesting which is why I was hoping for onion rings. The wife faired better with her chicken fajitas. She was happy with plenty of sides and lots of guacamole ($3 extra charge). From the moment we walked in, the hostess gave us a warm welcome, and we were seated right away. It took our server a little while to get to our table, but she arrived with waters in hand, which was appreciated. We started with the fried green tomatoes. They were good, though I've definitely had better back home in Houston. For my entrée, I ordered the Badass Bacon Plate, and it absolutely hit the spot. Everything on the plate was delicious, from the thick-cut slab of bacon to the perfectly cooked scrambled eggs. I especially appreciated that the eggs were seasoned before cooking, something I don't often see at restaurants, and it really made a difference. The hash brown casserole was also fantastic and tied the whole meal together. My brother ordered the fried chicken biscuit and thoroughly enjoyed every bite. Although our server was clearly very busy, the restaurant had a great team approach. Other staff members checked on us, refilled drinks, and made sure we had everything we needed, so we never felt neglected. Overall, it was a great dining experience with delicious food, friendly hospitality, and excellent teamwork. I would definitely recommend Phoebe's Diner if you're looking for a satisfying breakfast or brunch in Austin.

We were greeted by a very nice woman inside who took our order. I went basic this time around and ordered a Cheeseburger with a side of fries. The seasoning on both was perfect and the patty was SOOOO soft and juicy. The buns used were airy and soft as well. Ugh. It was just delicious, I regretted not getting the double patty. Not sure what their sauce includes and I don't want to guess and be super wrong, but it did contribute to the overall taste of the burger. The fries had a seasoning that also gave them great flavor, they were right in the perfect middle between crisp and soft, which I personally like! Unfortunately this location is going through its teething troubles. First of all it took way too long to get a server to check with us after sitting down. There were plenty of staff available and in fact I noted about five or six people standing at the end of the kitchen on their phones while the chef was busting his butt to get orders out. I ordered a simple double bacon cheeseburger which, at any other restaurant in the country, means you get a double patty. The burger came out greasy and tiny and with only one patty.
