I am not originally from Texas, where I come from Cafe and Diner style Restaurants are all over. No chain restaurants, no corporate bs, just good ole mom and pop home cooking. Now it's been many years since I've been home but it's a craving that is always there and hard to fill. Cafe 290 does just that! Great home cooked meals, typical Diner sized portions (very large) and breakfast at any time of the day! Let's be honest, it's never the wrong time for breakfast! It feels like you are sitting in your home kitchen, the staff are very nice, and the atmosphere is typical Texas Diner, and there is nothing wrong with that! Few pictures, and good ole classic cheeseburger! 1lb of meat... good luck, taste great but sheesh, it's hefty, the quesadilla is 10/10 with chicken, idk why it just bangs every time! And the very classic egg omelette! Get the diced potatoes, it's all divine! LASTLY and probably most important! THEY HAVE HOMEMADE CAKE AND PIE by the slice. Cafe 290 is a no frills, classic roadside diner. They offer your typical American breakfast and lunch options as well as impressive looking cakes and pies. My go-to is The 290 which is two eggs, a choice of meat, and a choice of fries, hash browns, or grits. It also comes with a short stack of fluffy buttermilk pancakes. It's such a filling combo and I share the pancakes with my husband. They are delicious! Service here is always fast and friendly. 04/2025 - My wife and I came in for the first time on a Sunday afternoon, around 11 AM. The cafe has a small parking lot with some available space along the street on the side of it, by the tire shop. It was very busy at this time, with a lot of parties waiting in- and outside the restaurant. We got our name on a waitlist and waited about 20 minutes. When we were sat our waitress greeted us pretty quickly and we got our order in. I loved reading the small history portion on the menu/table. It was cool to know how long the building had been around and what it was previously used for. Unfortunately the rest of our dining experience went downhill after sitting down. Shortly after placing our order our waitress came to our table and told us the kitchen was running behind and it might be a "little longer than usual" to get our food. At that initial comment we felt fine about it and were willing to wait. 10 minutes went by and eventually an HOUR went by. We decided to stick it out only because there aren't many other brunch or breakfast places in the Manor area (aside from CGs) and we weren't wanting to leave and wait again somewhere else. The issue we had was it seemed our waitress was avoiding us throughout that hour we were waiting. She never dropped by to give us an update or just say anything out of courtesy. The food finally comes out, I ordered basic--hash browns, eggs, bacon and some pancakes. Our waitress sets it on the table, I start cutting stuff up only to find it is ICE COLD. We willingly, without complaint, waited an hour for this food, and it's cold. Nope. Frustrated, I called the waitress over and she took my plate and said she'd get them on it right away. Thankfully the new plate came out on the fly and yes, it was warm. At the end of the day the "basic" options were mediocre. Will opt for just cooking at home next time. We'd always passed the Cafe on our way home and really wanted to try it. We have and unfortunately given this experience we won't be back any time soon. It's been around for a very long time, and I can appreciate its history, but wouldn't recommend it for anyone looking for a quality meal. read more

I usually order grubhub for breakfast from Cafe 290, but today I needed a late lunch, so I stopped by. The servers are always super friendly and helpful. I wanted something light and easy, so I ordered The chicken salad sandwich and side salad, it was really good. They make the chicken salad fresh in house and it was light and healthy. I can't have raw onion.And I was really happy that this chicken salad did not have raw onion. The housemaid chips are really good too. My go to orders are typically the big breakfast with hot cakes or breakfast. Tacos and the boyfriend always gets the grilled pork chop breakfast plate. read more

Came in here for breakfast at 11am on a Sunday and we're able to get sat immediately. The staff were super friendly and were happy to make recommendations to us. The food was exactly the kind of hearty breakfast diner meal that we were craving. Delicious and comforting. If you like a small town diner vibe with good people, excellent service, and some good home cooking, 290 Cafè is a great option. I am a very disappointed Longstanding customer. My experience at 290 Cafe located in Manor, TX is usually nothing but the best. I have recommended several friends and family members. On 3/11/2026 I placed two to go orders, 1. 10piece lemon pepper wings and 1. 10 piece Buffalo Buffalo wings for dinner on my home from a hards days work. Upon my discovery I discovered plain overcooked dry wings as if they were rewarmed, without a drop of lemon pepper on them. I immediately called the restaurant in hopes of a resolution for inaccurate order i received, but instead what I received was attitude, dismissed and told it was nothing they could do. I asked to speak to the manager, whom I knew well is a male, when a female answer and identified herself as the manager. The response and results I received from her manager none manger was the same. I called back on 3/12/26 only to get the replay of yesterday attitude, lies and all. I told the only thing they would be able to do is take my number a have the real manager contact me. As I stated early I have been a Longstanding customer, but not sure for how long. Manor is up and coming with great eateries that people have their pick of, so with that being said seem like 290 would bend over backwards to keep and satisfy their loyal customers. read more

Three servers behind the counter. The sign says wait to be seated. We wait...one of the ladies yells something that we can't understand. She repeats for us to just go sit over there and motions with her hand. I guess the conversation going on was extremely important. Our server saunters over with menus and asks what we would like...well, water to start. We ordered and there pancakes I got were decent. The fried chicken sandwich was good. It could have used some spice. It's a cute cafe and they seem to have many regulars that got excellent service. All in all I would give them another shot. read more

Wanted to meet a friend in Elgin at a halfway point from Austin. Manor is right in the middle, so we thought we'd give Cafe 290 a shot! Standard diner fare, service, and atmosphere. I would say this isn't a place I'd go out of my way for, but the tater tots are next level. Lol. Seriously, I don't know what they season them with, but it's almost magical. I ate all of them even though I was already very full. It's clean and our waitress was fast and friendly. Despite us showing up on a Sunday afternoon we were seated and tended to almost immediately. She was so quick with the coffee refill once, I didn't even notice her stop by. My tired self was extremely grateful. The Herbivore burger is so good! It's a garden patty with carrots, peas, corn and other veggies turned into a circle. I'd order another. Skip the mac and cheese. Staff is always helpful and cheerful. Food is classic Texas diner- including some American classics like fried chicken livers and chopped steak and gravy. Came in for lunch on a Tuesday, and this place is exactly what it promises to be. It's a great little retro diner-style spot with made-to-order comfort food. It's been open almost 80 years now! I was able to get a seat immediately, but I would imagine this place gets busy for breakfast. I ate the quesadilla with fajita chicken, it was a really good portion size, especially for the price. There's a special place in my heart for places that serve breakfast all day, which is what I always order when I come here. Service is always friendly & good, prices are cheap. it's 1 of the rare places that actually serve vegetarian cream gravy (biscuits & gravy), & it's 1 of my favorites! Their biscuits are phenomenal! Soft, fluffy while still being dense enough to be a biscuit. I really only have 2 complaints, 1 being specific to me being a vegetarian. A meat eater may not even notice this- the hash browns, which are usually really good, today tasted like they were cooked with meat. Maybe because I ate here during lunch time? A very greasy smoky meat taste. It's bad enough to make me never order them again. The other thing, which I think everyone can relate to, is the fact that the ventilation is so bad, you smell like food ALL DAY. That's a big pet peeve of mine, I don't want to smell like a restaurant all day. I even sat in the front against the window, but it still managed to really soak in. I went there to eat this morning in Maynard Texas. It was really good breakfast. I had the three egg omelette. It looks so good. I forgot to take a picture of it. I just dug right in and started eating it. The coffee is really good. I read at the actual café that it's fresh ground from a coffee place in Austin, so the coffee was super good. My waitress is really nice. Was pretty quick for. For breakfast. I have friends that live in Manor. I think I'm gonna invite them to go there with me and maybe have dinner there. Café 290 is a really good locals hang out. In our neighborhood in Manor, Texas. always full of locals getting their meal on as well as heavy conversations. Always good to walk into a diner full of people. You know it's gonna be good food when it's difficult to find a seat. Diner is open from early morning till late at night. I enjoyed going for brunch on a Sunday before the church crowd came in. After that it's a full on brawl finding a chair let alone a table. Pretty good desserts... Food is good here. This place was recommended by a friend. I typically don't order breakfast to go but I did this day because of scheduling. I ordered French toast and bacon. My bacon was super crispy which is always a plus! Serving size was 2 thin strips. My French toast was definitely not a hit. It was way too eggy and soggy. It was as if I was eating bland bread dipped in eggs that were not thoroughly cooked. The edges were perfectly cooked but the middle part was not. I added syrup and butter for flavor and it was still bland! Service inside was a bit hectic. I had to wait 3-4 minutes before I was greeted while the cashier packed to go orders and failed to acknowledge I was waiting. Taylor Location I ordered the Thursday Special, beef tips with gravy over rice with two sides to go. The rice was not properly cooked. It was hard. I had to dig it out my teeth. The beef tips were tender and seasoned. When I received the bill, I saw where it said they charge 3% for credit/debit cards. I thought I'm paying cash. My bill was $13.51 so I gave her a $20. She gave me back $6. When I asked about my change she said We don't do change. I said then I need another $1. I left the .51 on the register. If you're not using coins, you should let people know just like you do about the 3% charge on card transactions. read more

Wonderful spot in Elgin. They have a wide variety of dishes so everyone can find something they enjoy. The queso was wonderful, my burger had the yummy char on the patty and the rest of the party was able to order breakfast even though it was almost noon. There is a rich history to the establishment and learning about it was fun. The service was spot on as well. read more
