Maxine's Gumbo is a true Manor treasure. We have been coming here for years, and it's consistently some of the best Cajun food you can find in Manor. ​ Beyond the incredible food, it's the people that make this place special. A huge thank you to the owner, Karen, and to Carrie for the wonderful service they've provided us throughout the years. They truly go above and beyond to make you feel welcome, and so many of my favorite memories with friends have been made around these tables. Bonus Tip: Keep an eye out for their seasonal Kings Cake from Joe Gambinos Bakery! They bring them in straight from Louisiana, and they are the perfect authentic treat to take home. This is a Cajun place, now please keep in mind I am Cajun and I'm kinda tough on places like this because I know what real Cajun food is like. They have things like fish, gator, shrimp, chicken, etc. The gumbo is pretty good though I feel the roux could be darker. But it's solid. We also got the platter with crawfish, fish and shrimp. The fish was good, the shrimp was great and the crawfish tasted like nothing. What a shame! Overall this place is pretty good but it's not somewhere I would want to go again. read more

Decided to check out Maxine's Gumbo House for the 1st time on Saturday, 03/29/2025 since I was in the mood for some crawfish & just wanted to share my feedback from my visit. - - - Customer Service: 5 star rating (our waitress was very friendly & attentive! ) - - - Food: 3 star rating (food was hot but overall just underwhelming in taste) Ordered 3 lbs of crawfish to eat at restaurant, which comes w/ potatoes & corn, and ordered 1lb to go - crawfish was "okay"...crawfish spice level was good but lacked in juices; the potatoes were soft but tasted very bland. The spices weren't coated evenly over the outside of the potatoes (see pic), as if the potatoes weren't cooked together w/ the crawfish & then only seasoned afterwards, which is why the potatoes lacked flavor & spices not evenly distributed. Gator bites Fried fish Chocolate cake Gumbo - - - Indoor Atmosphere: plenty of indoor tables; was not crowded when we visited - - - Parking Situation: Plenty of parking onsite since Maxine's has own private parking lot To sum it up, I wouldn't describe my experience at Maxine's good or bad..instead I would say that it was "okay". Came on a Sunday at noon with a friend. Ordered the gator bites and I had the seafood platter. Service was great, had multiple staff members checking in and asking if we needed anything. I wasn't super hungry so I didn't make a large dent in my fried food heavy plate which was unfortunate because I know it's best fresh. The food itself the fry was good, I wish the gator bites were a bit crispier and that the platter had some stronger seasoning and flavors coming through but overall it's been highly recommended by friends that live in the area so I'm sure I'll return and try something fresh. read more

I remember my experience here and it was very pleasant. I had ordered a catfish dinner, a cup of gumbo, and an oyster po boy. The service was good, but I did order carryout, so I can't speak for the dine-in service. They greeted me and handed me the order, and I was pleased that everything was correct. The gumbo was flavored and a decent serving size; you can't go wrong with this. The catfish dinner was delicious. The catfish was perfectly grilled and the white rice was cooked perfectly. The catfish had a nice well-seasoned flavor to it. The oyster po boy was a standout because of the flavor and the oysters being fried to the point that the oyster was crunchy on the outside but tender on the inside. We loved the exterior and interior atmosphere at Maxine's Gumbo House. Our waitress was Carrie and she was very sweet and helpful. We ordered the seafood gumbo and boudin to go. While we waited we enjoyed seasonal Mardi Gras Bock from Abita Brewery and they were delicious. I like the glasses they used to serve beer in. They were a nice size and frosty! My husband made a comment about how he that that the crawfish etoufee sounded really good. Carrie commented that it was her favorite item on the menu and offered us a taste. It was the best crawfish etoufee we have ever tried and the spice level was very nice. The boudin was the best that I have ever had! It had a really nice texture and flavor. I have to say that I wish that we had ordered the sausage and chicken gumbo instead of the seafood gumbo. I love oysters but as it turns out I don't like them too much in my gumbo. That could just be a matter of personal preference and my husband had the same thoughts. I noticed too when I looked up the menu later; that the chicken one has a dark roux as opposed to the seafood roux that was lighter in color. Again, totally personal preference. Ordered take out - chicken and sausage gumbo and crawfish etoufee . Absolutely the worse Cajun food I ever had - I'm originally from Louisiana and know Cajun food. The gumbo came in container with broken lid. There was no chicken. I also found 2 1/2 "stick" in it. May have been a stem of a plant or something. I had to throw away the crawfish etoufee - so salty, I couldn't eat it. Also found several bay leaves in the etoufee. The crawfish were so overcooked. What a waste of $40. This place is so fun! All Louisiana themed with TVs and fun art. It opened in 2018 and has amazing food!!!! Everything we got, we loved especially the poboy, egg rolls and fried oysters. A folksy, drama free, and casual ambiance. Enjoying their friendly atmosphere and calm demeanor. Walked in this morning to see they are not as busy as one might think. I feel the overflow parking is from cafe 290. A real cute, cute waitress helped us out this Sunday morning, food plates are very nice sized and plated beautifully. Food has got good flavor. My wife and I went here for the first time today. We have both spent a good amount of time in Louisiana and know good Cajon food when we taste it. Our waitress was lovely and the vibe of the place was simple but cool. We both ordered a NOLA sampler, figuring there are three things that you'd better do right at a cajon restaurant; gumbo, red beans & rice, and jambalaya. All three came out fresh and hot. The gumbo had plenty of chicken and excellent sausage to chew on and was flavored perfectly. The red beans and rice were savory and delicious. At first I thought the jambalaya might have been a bit too salty but with successive bites, all of the flavors shone through. Even our seven month old baby couldn't get enough! The redfish was packed with flavor, the hamburger was satisfying, and the chicken and waffles were a winner--crispy, juicy chicken on a fresh waffle. The bread pudding for dessert sealed the deal. 3-person party had dinner and two of us ordered the NOLATrio. It was quite good and our waitress was very pleasant and attentive.

I wanted to love this place. Walked in and it smelled great. Staff was welcoming. Great menu. Then we ordered. And waited. 15 minutes for a side salad. Then another 10 for another side salad followed closely by the entrees. Once they arrived no one ever checked on us. When we needed something we had to get up and find our server. The place was virtually empty. So while I might try it again because everyone at the table enjoyed the food, I won't sit forever again. read more

They need to take that weekend brunch sign DOWN b/c for whatever reason their brunch ends at 12p. If they extended their brunch hours you might see more cars in their parking lot and a boost in business. We showed up at 12:15p FOR BRUNCH to find out it ended already. That's Basically a glorified breakfast b/c it sure isnt brunch. We came here 2 days in a row. 1st day we ordered: Boudin- cooked perfectly meat to breading perfect spice was on point & the sauce was amazing Bayou Pasta- Took me back to New Orleans a Must Try, huge portion, plenty of crawfish & shrimp and the cream sauce "Wow" it had a kick to it Catfish PoBoy- fish was so juicy and seasoned perfect, bread was so light 2nd day we ordered: Nola Trio- great combo you can taste the love of the South in this dish Stuffed Fish w/dirty rice- I'm addicted I upgraded to the dirty rice it came out beautifully. Huge portion the fish was perfectly cooked, dirty rice was seasoned with a little kick and the cream sauce I can't even put into words. Having spent the majority of my formative years in Louisiana, I had to check out Maxine's Gumbo House during my extended stay in Austin. The service was super friendly and prompt. I had the shrimp po'boy and it was solid. The shrimp was flavorful and the bread is brought in from Louisiana to give that perfect bite. Not much can replicate a Parkway or Parasols po'boy but this will satisfy that itch if you have it. I plan on checking out some more dishes while I'm here. Stay tuned... read more

Okay so this could very well be my favorite lunch spot in the Austin area. I love everything about it. I grew up in NOLA and when I eat here I feel like I am at my favorite back home. This time I ordered the Burger which was awesome. I asked if instead of the bun I could get it on the NOLA French bread. It was better than I had hoped. The fries are always perfect and hot and fresh. The service is always great here and today was no exception. Not sure of her name but she handles the room with perfection. A friend who grew up in New Orleans suggested we make the drive to Manor for lunch at Maxine's. It was definitely a good lunch, worth the 25 minute drive from Round Rock on a recent Thursday. The restaurant parking lot was nearly empty when we arrived, as was the self-seating dining room. There was one person serving everything, which worked out fine given the place was fairly empty. There were several lunch specials on the menu, and we chose the gumbo and po boy combo. The gumbo was excellent, with just a hint of heat. My friend had fried oysters in her sandwich while I had shrimp. The seafood was freshly breaded with well-seasoned cornmeal and there was no skimping. This was a bargain at $10.99 in my opinion. The dining room is spare, with metal chairs. The walls are decorated with interesting artwork, and there were 2 TVs going when we were there. The menu has plenty of great options that are worth further exploration. I could easily make a meal from a bowl of seafood gumbo or a seafood platter spotted on a nearby table as we left. Prices seem very reasonable. This is a hidden gem as casual restaurants go, and I will be back to try more! read more
