Run don't walk to this - go see - fast food place. Highly recommend the Mac and cheese and the catfish. It's late at night and we're driving home after doing grocery shopping when the crowds are gone. The hubcap wants to eat fast food out of the blue. Unfortunately, all the fast food places have dismal reviews except for two in this area. Plus, most of them are closed at that time. This is how we found Southern Style Chicken & Waffle. It closes at midnight and has southern food, my husband's favorite type of home style food. He loves mama's casseroles and mac and cheese due to being raised in the Deep South. It, also, had one of his favorite foods: waffle. Plus it is on the way. We head out there and notice an almost empty strip mall. Creepy but the neon sign said it was open. The place was empty & clean yet the opening of the door sent an alert ring for the staff to come out. I was impressed that you could have a waffle as a side with some of the entrees. I was tempted to order fried chicken until I saw the catfish on the menu. I ordered it with a side of mac and cheese to give to the job cap. He ordered the chicken sandwich with mac n cheese. We got it as takeout. The portions they give you are huge when compared to other fast food places. I got three large catfish fillets and a giant side of mac and cheese for $13.49. I wish I had ordered a larger portion after tasting the catfish fillet. You could instantly taste how it was prepared fresh - definitely not frozen. The fish was light ,succulent, and had a melt in your mouth texture. This is not the catfish you ate at a church fish fry. This catfish is exponentially better. The chicken sandwich was two chicken patties in a sandwich similar to chick fil a sandwich. I tasted it and thought it was better. My husband preferred chick fil a though. He really loved my catfish and my mac and cheese. I gave him all the mac and cheese. I split my three catfish fillets into two meals. Service was great. The server told us the catfish was Asian catfish and served it to me the way he preferred it: side of lemon with seasoning sauces on the side . He gave us a heads up that they cook the food fresh and it would take 15 minutes. We didn't mind the wait and waited patiently. We will definitely come back and order catfish, waffles, mac and cheese, and fried chicken when we come here. This is one our favorite late night go see fast food places. I love that it stays open late and has the best catfish I ever had in my life. read more

Fried chicken so crispy and juicy! I have driven by this location so many times and finally stopped in to check it out. From the second you open the door to the restaurant, it is a spice overload on the senses which tells you of the freshly made to order system. It is a small location but the staff is quite friendly as they kept updating my wait time. The lemon and pepper and spicy options didn't disappoint as both were well seasoned. I'll give them a 3.75 stars because the waffle and chicken wings tasted pretty good. I'm not sure if they had to go kill the chicken before it got to me because it took over an hour to get to me. And they forgot to include the utensils even though I put that on my order. Not sure why many of these places don't send the order with plastic utensils that why we are ordering food for delivery to not use our home utensils or plates. Because the prices online are extremely high even without the delivery fee and only a dollar for the service fee (I have Grubhub + right now) if I'm in Springfield shopping I'll order ahead and go pick up. The chicken here is consistently delicious and the portions are generous. I especially enjoy the lightly battered double-fried fries and the mochi-like consistency of the waffle. I will advise that for large orders, take the extra minute needed to physically unpack your order and double check it yourself. Ms. Tina (and the manager over the phone) made the experience a lot better for me after a part of my order was missing. I appreciated that a lot and Ms. Tina was warm, comforting and understanding with the entire ordeal. I walked in today and got the 9 piece spicy dark meat chicken and two waffles. It was a bit of a wait due to online orders, since they make it fresh to order. I took it to go. The fried chicken reminded me of popeyes chicken the old days. Much spicier than the current popeyes chicken. Very crunchy, steaming hot, moist chicken meat. I got sauces but didn't use any because the chicken was too good to spoil with sauce. Chicken 10 out of 10. As for the powdered sugar waffles, they were ok, a bit on the rubbery side. I was hoping for crunchy waffles with soft center. The syrup provided was not real maple syrup, it was the kind you get at at McDonald's pancake meal. Waffles 4 out of 10. Friendly order-taker advised that the chicken would be ready in 15-20 min-- it took all of that and then some because it is made to order. I waited at one of the few tables in the well--lit dining area until the chicken was ready. (mine was aside of coleslaw. Baby! That chicken was worth the wait! Saw this place on google maps when looking for late night food. The storefront is in a very quiet and hidden plaza in my opinion, you wouldn't be able to just notice it. The cashier in the front was actually very nice and the food took around 15-20 mins to be done. Quite long in my opinion, but I guess good since everything was made fresh. The waffle was really good flavor wise! I would rate it like a 7/10. The tenders were surprisingly big and full of meat! The mac and cheese was also shocking because very little places I've been to make good mac and cheese. That dish did not disappoint! However the half and half was a bit on the sour side. Saw the ad in Facebook with a promo but wanted to come in, support a new local business and get my chicken wings and waffle -- and mac n cheese cravings satisfied. The wings were crunchy, moist and seasoned just right for the fluffy fragrant waffle. With the powder sugar, I didn't need the syrup. I did enjoy the sweet mildly spicy red sauce. The Mac and cheese - was really rich, cheesy and delicious. I choose it instead of fries with my 3 piece dark meat. The chicken thigh was moist and crunchy. For me, the crust was too salty. The service was friendly and efficient. The manager was very informative, passionate about their food and their expansion. I will definitely return for my chicken and waffles. I will also try the hot sandwiches and tenders as recommended.
