They will let you try any beer on the menu before ordering a full pint which I thought was very kind. Unfortunately, after trying a few and coming up unsuccessful, I opted for a "handcrafted margarita". I made a special note in my head to never do that again at a brewery. The margarita was extremely sour and unpleasant! My husband who is a "hoppy beer drinking man" really enjoyed his two picks. Honestly, if I had just ordered a diet coke and been naive to their drinks, this would have been a five star review because their food was MOUTHWATERING! I'd go back time and time again for their chicken wings, fried cauliflower and french fries. They were crispy, crunchy, hot and served with the best homemade dipping sauces: blue cheese, ranch, vegan blue cheese, sweet chili sauce, and zesty buffalo. Also seated in front of prep area, open to public viewing: Bold move for any restaurant, but clearly demonstrates a high confidence in the kitchen. Overall, indoor service at the bar was excellent. Delicious food! We tried Mountain Sun not long ago and wanted to try Southern Sun this time. I loved the steak sandwich at Mountain Sun so I had to get it again at Southern Sun. The sandwich was just as amazing as I remembered it. The steak is tender and not chewy and has really good flavor. The bread is perfect and the ratio to filling is great. The sandwich also has a really good amount of cheese and the horseradish sauce is so good. The chips were also good. We tried the poutine this time and it was awesome. They put so much gravy and the perfect amount of cheese. The small size was a perfect appetizer size for two if you're super hungry. Otherwise I'd say three people is better. I didn't try the burger but apparently it was delicious and the green chili on top was awesome. Great service and friendly people as always. The bathroom could've been cleaner and there is an atm in that hallway if you don't have any cash. read more

To all those debating waiting for a seat at the usually packed Southern Sun, or the half empty Murphy's, realize that the fact there is a wait time (if any) it is for a good reason. Do you prefer a delicious dining experience with attentive and kind servers, or eating cardboard-esque, flavorless, middle school cafeteria-style garbage with sassy, rude, snooty servers? More simply put, would you rather eat at the Krusty Krab, or the Chum Bucket? Honestly, this is the place to BE! The servers are all awesome possums, and listen to my yammering stories about birds and other random interests. Both the chicken and cauliflower wings served at the Sun are EPIC, and if you can't finish them and take them home, they are still delicious days later. The ambiance is great; really nice artwork, great people and just an overall positive experience. They give beer samples which are all amazing, as is the food. Prior to a couple of days ago, I hadn't been here in a few years, so I'm not sure if they still have bands play certain days or have other events. However, even if not, the food, drinks, ambiance, and service are great enough to make this restaurant the best in the Table Mesa shopping center. This place was recommended when we were at a cafe in downtown Boulder. So we drove here. It was easy to get a seat inside, and we started placing the order. The server was easy to talk to and gave us samples before we ordered our beer and food. I ordered the Annapurna Amber (rated it a 4.0 on Untapped), and it was a decent beer. The best thing I ever experienced in a while was the poutine with jalapeños added on to it. It was so good. Out of the world. We also got the cauliflower wings and those were also good. They had a really good mix of vegan and mainstream options and I'll certainly go back when I'm in Colorado again. Food will be 50%, service will be 30% and ambience and everything else is 20%. A fun place to hang out, grab a beer, and take in the sights of Boulder and the mountains. One unique detail about this place is that they operate under a team system model. If you work here, you do it all. One day you might be a server, the next day wearing the head chef apron. We absolutely love this place and you will too. We split the beyond burger served on rye and the house vegan chili. They really support their vegans and vegetarians out there which is a plus! This was a perfect snack to warm us up after a windy hike in the flatirons. For the non-veg heads, the real burgers are top notch. They have some tasty beers to pair with your food. The annapurna amber ale and the raspberry wheat ale are both light and delicious. Overall, dining here is a great experience and we enjoy talking to the staff. Staff is friendly, and clearly they love working there, but half their energy is joking around with each other, even when slammed. Yet they don't diss the customer. Everything was awesome! Service, food, employees attitudes! We are an older couple here in Boulder for our son's wedding this week. Arriving tired & hungry after 19 hr drive over 2 days. They very kindly Sat us immediately at a great table with a view of the mountains! ( doesn't happen often when you are older- I assure you!) Our server, Owen, arrived quickly, brought us water & took our drink orders ( boy we needed those!). Drinks came quickly. Came back by a few minutes later & took our food orders. Food came promptly as we were finishing our drinks, which Owen promptly refilled! It was awesome. My husband had onion, Swiss & mushroom burger. He said it was the best he'd ever eaten! I had a blackened chicken sandwich with pepper jack cheese& special mayo. Also one of the best I had ever had! Both were served with specialty seasoned chips made there! Delicious! All the servers were young & appeared to be Univ. Of CO students- as Owen confirmed he was. We were probably the oldest people there but we loved it & stayed for the sunset. This is a great stop after a long hike at NCAR. The food and service are consistently good, at least at the bar. I've never come here with a large group and/or sat at the tables, so I can't speak to that. I have watched the staff work the line and the bar, and they seem to have an efficient rhythm down every time I visit. On various occasions I've tried their rotating flavor hummus, their veggie chili, the nachos, the garden burger, and the pub/poutine fries, and all have been delicious. I don't think I've yet to be unimpressed with the overall flavor or quantity of food. One thing I particularly love is that I can sub the veggie green chili for the bacon gravy on the poutine, that the small portion is huge, and well worth the money. It's filling! Even sharing the small I have no room for more food usually. I also enjoy the atmosphere, although it does get a little loud. It is quintessential Boulder, but in a good way, at least in my opinion. It seems as though all of the staff enjoy and respect each other, and it's fun to see (and be a part of) their interactions behind the bar. On the beverage side, they always seem to have at least 3 or 4 choices of cider, which I love, and many great beers on tap, which my boyfriend loves. One possible negative is that they don't take cards here. If you haven't gathered from other reviews/descriptions, you will need to either bring cash, or use the onsite ATM to pay your bill. I wouldn't mind so much, but I don't carry cash often, and the surcharge kind of sucks since my bank (Chase) won't cover it. Cannot WAIT for this place to reopen on March 31!! I first went to Mountain Sun and fell in love with the funky, colorful, laidback menu and atmosphere. Southern Sun had great outdoor seating that was extremely relaxing to sit at after a long day at RMNP. As soon as we got there at exactly 3pm (when they opened Saturday), a huge line was already forming. I saw that they were even handing out baskets of french fries to those waiting in line, which impressed me very much as nothing tastes better than free food. Everyone at my party ordered the Date Night Burger (roasted poblano peppers, bacon, goat cheese, and date puree - yummmmm) and two pitchers of an IPA (forget which one, but you really can't go wrong here). Highly recommend the pitchers if you're with a group - one pitcher was enough for 4 beers, and it was only ~$20. read more

This is a very different type of establishment, you either pay with cash or check or some other way, which was explained as, we send you home with the bill and an envelope and you send the money back to us. ( Something to that effect), We went with the cash option, but I noticed that we were taxed on the good portion then also on the alcohol portion then taxed on the total, very odd, and staff really could not explain that. As far as the food, the cauliflower wings were over done, and had a thick breading on them, the poutine, as it was a large portion, was spicy to say the least. I have never had poutine brown gravy that had spice to that extreme or at all for that fact. It was an okay meal, but not sure it would be a repeat option for me. read more

Our waiter came to the table and threw the coasters at us where one flew at my brother. Then he brought waters to which he spilled on the table with no apologies or clean up. Then he brought more coasters to which he threw again. We received our food then he didn't check on us til he saw a credit card to which he needed to tell us "cash only." The only reason I came here was because it's by Neptune Mountaineering. But never again. So disappointed.... Southern Sun is one of the more popular Boulder restaurants because it combines a casual atmosphere with a versatile menu loaded with comfort food. It works whether you visit on a date, as a family, solo, or with a business group. Understandably, some won't like their cash-only policy, but that is combatted with an in-house ATM. They have a cabinet full of games to make your visit more enjoyable or keep your kids occupied. There is plenty of parking all around the Table Mesa Shopping Plaza. Plus, they're open until 1 AM. This was our first time visiting Boulder and our guest met us at this roadside restaurant/ brewery. They are known for burgers and beer although the the wings were also very good and VERY Large . The largest I've ever seen . Evolutionarily speaking birds are the direct descendants of dinosaurs and judging from the size of the chicken, we be may have just eaten a little bit of residual pteranodon last night!! SAUCE BANDITS! There is never enough sauce. Where is the sauce? The fries are good but so deliciously salty that they need copious amounts of sauce. Fries always come with one little cup of ketchup, and you need to beg for more. This is the same with pizza sides. They are super stingy with sauce and Parmesan. The only time we have encountered too much sauce was on the burrito. The burrito came covered in vegan green chili that was so spicy it would kill a real life vegan. I think the spice level was an attempt to disguise the absolute lack of flavor in the burrito. Who makes a burrito with jasmine rice, canned black beans and canned diced tomatoes? And don't think the burrito was completely void of the sauce bandits signature move. There was about half a teaspoon of guacamole and the equivalent of sour cream. While waiting for some sauce it is a great place to people watch. It is a great place to see some classic boulder creatures. The beer is good and the service a touch below par, usually a bit awkward. Overall better service than Under the Sun, where you can expect servers to be too incompetent to remember to bring your extra sauce! read more

The food wasn't particularly memorable -- the wings and Basil Blue Cheese Burger I ordered were fine but nothing special, and the fries (extra) weren't super crispy. The kitchen was a bit backed up during our visit (really not even that bad) but the waiter was super apologetic and even offered us free chips (which actually were quite good!) and a reduction on our bill. Drinks were quick. They also kindly let us grab another seat outside to wait for our Uber after the first cancelled. I'd come back again, though more for the beer than the food. When I first walked in and saw the carpeting on the floor I wasn't so sure that we made the right decision but once we sat down outside to enjoy the awesome weather and beautiful view of the mountains that thought quickly vanished. I tried a couple different beers and all of them were very good and the server made some great recommendations based off my likes (IPAs) For food I got the S.O.B.
