I'm not a beer drinker so this is about the food. I ordered the Reuben sandwich (a regular Reuben, not the tempeh version). It looked good when it arrived--nicely toasted marble bread and what seemed to be a good ratio of sauce, kraut, cheese and meat. The problem was that the corned beef was sliced really thick and it was too tough to bite through. Overall the texture and flavor of the sandwich was just not there, and the accompanying fries were mediocre. My companion ordered the cauliflower "wings" and was surprised that it came with two side sauces, rather have having been tossed in one of the sauces before being served. This preparation was different than what she'd had before at the same restaurant and wasn't as good as she expected. The space was large and pleasant and service was fine, food just wasn't up to par. Yummmm! We were both hungry and my date suggested for us to come here again since it was close. He ordered us both the herb roasted chicken, knowing that I didn't want any kind of bread. We ordered drinks too. By surprise we got free fries for no charge too just because the bar tender said they were extra fries. That was a plus! The chicken was well cooked and tasty along with the salad and hummus. The hummus was absolutely delicious. Second best hummus I've had so far. Definitely enjoy this place. I can't believe that this place has a 4 star review average. I've been "going" here since they opened. I was a manager at a neighboring retail store, I showed up for their liquor license review at the city when they first wanted to open. Here's a funny story, beside the point of my actual review... At that time I worked with a guy, again next door to this place, he didn't even have a bank account, he was a mountain man. We went there one night after they opened for business. Someone in the group tried to pay for everyone with a credit card. The server said, "Oh, no, we don't accept credit cards because they're evil..." My friend/co-worker said, "Oh, you server beer, to people, who drive home afterwards, without knowing or caring if they're actually capable of driving home..." Anyway, I went again today, under duress from my boss. It was totally amateur hour, like always. The food was mediocre at best, the drinks were equally mediocre. This is a pretty busy location but to make up for you waiting for your table there is a special treat of fresh French fries that arrive in the waiting area every 10-15 minutes. It took us a little while to realize that they were for us but once we knew my toddler was in heaven. The food at all of the mountain sun locations is great and so is the beer. Southern sun has way more free parking than the other locations which is why it's our favorite. Don't forget to bring your cash, they don't take credit cards. If you do happen to forget there is an atm in the restaurant. They only serve pub food but they have their burger down to a science. So delicious and all around excellent, we ate here three times in one week! Those familiar with other establishments under Mountain Sun already know the drill: this place is cash (or local check) only, and they have plenty of fantastic beers. Their specials seem to change daily; highly recommend you take a look at those first when ordering. I had one of the softest, juiciest, best burgers of my life in their special "animal-style" burger, which was infinitely better than the inspiration behind it. Later in the week I was lucky enough to try the special fried green tomato sandwich + watermelon salad -- refreshing and so appealing on a hot summer day. The bison burger is exceptional. Prices are reasonable enough: for two grabbing lunch or dinner, we each get a beer and a burger/sandwich/burrito and the tab (before tip) is around $36. No complaints around quality, value, or how much food you get. Only thing I dislike, and this is purely personal preference, is that white corn chips are the default side for burgers/sandwiches. If you want to sub fries, it's $1.50 (also this is all documented on the menu in multiple spots). Southern Sun's fries are fine, but I think the fries at Under the Sun are much tastier. read more

When you are training for a new job in a restaurant, the last thing you want to do is spill water on a customer. Today, Ryan was training for waitstaff at the Sun and did just that. Why do I write this.....? Because Ryan was mortified and so apologetic and the Management "had his back". Both the manager and his trainer offered to cover some food and even offered a shirt (mine was hardly wet). I took neither, but I wanted to make public how you need to allow businesses to make things right when they go wrong. Too often on this site a business is slammed, when a human error happens and a review is posted before even making a complaint directly to the business owner or manager. I have owned a business in the past and this always made me angry. Thank you Southern Sun for your exceptional customer service today....and my grilled cheese was delicious! For newcomers, the Sun has a policy of just accepting cash or checks.....but do not worry if you forget....they will give you an envelope to mail in what you owe! I've been regularly going to breweries the past 8 years of my life and this is the best brewery I have ever been to. Right when we sat at the bar we were greeted by the manager, Wes. He was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about all of the beers brewed in house and provided us with a flight of samples based on our beer preferences. Once we picked our beer of choice, he brought us our beers and told us the first round is on the house. Shortly after our food arrive, we ordered the BBQ and hot wings with a side of cheese fries. Chicken wings are one of my favorite foods, and these were some of the best I have ever had. Atmosphere was great, service was top notch, beers were amazing, and the food was perfection. Easy to find. Only a couple of spots at the bar, but patrons were very accommodating. Service was immediate and they use a Team approach. The staff checked on me every 5 minutes at least. Food was great! I had the spinach salad and the spicy burrito. Both were fantastic and great portions. Huge selection of beer and some specialty liquor. Definitely something for everyone here. I normally won't base an entire review on customer service, nor do I ever tip less than 20%, but I broke both rules on my recent trip there. Like others, I've gone to Mountain Sun on Pearl many times and have always enjoyed my experiences there. So my friends invited me out to Southern Sun and expected the same, but our waitress was horrible. I had to ask for club soda 3 times and the only time I got it was when the gentleman who brought our food to our table handled it. Then I had to ask 2 times for lemons with my crab cake. My recommendation to the wait staff is to bring out all the drinks to the table at once. That way you won't forget, instead of bringing drinks to the table one drink at a time (unless she purposely ignored me which was entirely possible). Food was fine. But it's a little disrespecting when you get completely ignored most of the time. Will be taking my business to Mountain Sun in the future. read more

On a recent trip to Boulder, my friends and I decided to visit this gem after a long day of hiking and scratching the life out of my legs. Be forewarned, this place is CASH ONLY. There's a chase bank across the parking lot and an ATM inside, so you're good. I decided to start off light and get the Blackberry Wheat beer. Delicious. It was your standard wheat with a gorgeous color. Next up, I decide to try the vegetarian ruben. Yes, you read that right, vegetarian ruben. Instead of corned beef, they use tempeh. Tempeh has a mushroom-y texture and flavor. They tell me it's some sort of wheat substitute...stuff. Whatever. It was good. This ruben was only one of many vegetarian/vegan options at this place. Don't worry, I was sure to offset it's general "healthiness" with a few other craft beers before heading out. Overall, the service was everything you'd expect from a place that prides itself on good beer and food. The servers were attentive, helpful and generally fantastic. Curse my attempt to be healthy. Do NOT get the wraps here. You will be disappointed. Food: When something is advertised as a chicken masala wrap, you expect some masala. Not the case here. After reading the reviews, which I should have done before going, I clearly should have gotten a burger. I got a carne asada burrito and it was not good. The tortilla was hard, crispy and stuck to the plate. The burrito had big chunks of chewy meat. It kind of reminded me of my undergrad food coop. Their heart is in it but they are still trying to figure out how to make food after leaving home for the first time. Nice folks, good service. I like that the beer growlers are mason jars. And the ginger molasses cake was to die for. Someone back there knows how to bake! I tried three beers here. The Illusion Dweller IPA was ok. Certainly not one of the better IPAs I've had. After having been to Mountain Sun many times, we ended up going to its Southern Sun brethren restaurant for the first time last night. It's hard to beat Mountain Sun but Southern Sun has two big advantages - lots of parking and a nice, big bar. Otherwise, the food, beer and service are pretty much the same, which is to say, awesome! Our waitress was super friendly and gladly brought us a sampling of a few different beers. We had a vegan fried cauliflower appetizer that was delicious. For our entrees, my wife had the steak frites and my son had the vegan curry, both from the specials menus and both excellent. At my waitresses' suggestion, I had the SOS burger. It was delicious as you'd expect for a burger with blackened seasoning, sautéed green chilies, jalapeños, and bacon with jack and cheddar cheese. Can't find a thing to complain about at Southern Sun and will happily return! read more
