I always wondered how much sod is (pre-grown patch of grass that is already moistened). If you live on the West side (which is the best side) lol. But the con to having the sun in your neighborhood then you also need to make sure you water your new turf grass two to three times a day. Of course it depends if you are making plugs (water 3 times a day up to 15 min a time for Ewa heat)...only twice a day for 15 min for the 4ft by 2 ft turf rolls. A popular type of turf grass that is "drought-resistant" is the Bermuda Zoysha grass. It is also lower in maintenance where it doesn't have to be cut as often. The sales staff here is super knowledgable and will help you out to what you want and the region of the island you live. I also purchased plants here which is priced reasonably. They also have potting soil and soil treatment available too. There are about 8 to 9 kinds of grass here. I also like how they have trees and palms. The dragon fruit trees look great as they grow. Something to consider if you want to landscape. Driving here it is on land where other businesses that also grow and sell turf is at so you will be wondering about how hidden it is. You will pass the security booth area and you follow the unpaved, dirt/gravel road and you will see them on the right. So be aware you would not want to drive here if you just detailed your car. You will have to end up washing your car soon if you drive here. If you also think your car cannot handle driving in dirt or mud then do not drive there. They do offer delivery service! The awesome lady employee said it is a $50 fee. Southern Turf Hawaii doesn't install but they do offer referrals of landscaping companies that can. If you want to do your own pick up then bring a tarp to cover your cargo area or truck bed. The other employees will then load you vehicle for you. The 4x2 turf sheets are about 35-40 pounds each so you get a work out when you unload them from your car. Price is good and I will highly consider coming back here when I need to do more grass for my home. read more

Picked up some standard Mondo Grass. The grass in the two flats were reasonably priced and very healthy. Hard to find this place if you don't realize you are going into an industrial area because the address is on Lanikūhana Ave in Mililani - so unless you are familiar with the place use your GPS. You even stop to check in with a security guard at the entrance to the area where there are several widely spaced businesses. Be prepared for gravel roads. Young lady in the office knows her inventory. She knew exactly where the Mondo Grass was and that she only had two flats available but that more had just been planted. Fortunately I only needed two so I had no problems. Be sure to have something to put under your purchase - the grass had just been watered so it was very wet. read more

Southern Turf Hawaii is my "go to first" gardening for my landscaping needs. STH carries such an awesome selection of pottery and plants, including grass varieties. To top if off, the prices here are so much easier on your WALLET. Bar none! Definitely a hidden gem in Mililani for those who are not familiar. This nursery is located at the end of the Meheula Parkway once you get of H2 Mililani Town Center exit. Just keep driving on the same road as Mililani's Safeway. Go past the Safeway store until you reach the end T-section. There you will see the Mililani Agricultural Park entrance with a white marquis listing of all the different business located inside the agricultural park. And another thing, I've a reoccuring bone to pick with Google Maps. Google Maps is so stupid like "dumb and dumber" because they can't seem to do what they are supposed to do and that is to navigate correctly. GM keeps taking you in circles when you use it as GPS to find STH. Advice = DO NOT USE GOOGLE MAPS (or Waze owned by GM) because you'll likely become so frustrated that you might curse out loud while following stupid Google Maps. This is not the first (but more than half a dozen times) time GM has literally "screwed me" GPS-wise. In recent years, Google Maps has gone downhill to a point of should I say dumb dumb like when Apple maps, years ago, sent drivers into the Australian desert. How can this internet Google giant have such a practically useless piece of dumb technology GPS? So as a result, use non-Google Maps GPS to find this destination if you find yourself requiring GPS. Or just simply stay on the Meheula Parkway and you will come to the end of the road once you take the Mililani Town Center exit (which leads you directly onto Meheula Pkwy anyways). Anyhoo...moving on. It's quite easy to come to STH for your 1-stop-shop when you can buy landscaping supplies like plants, sod, grass, natural tile, grills and pottery on the same trip. I have been here quite a few times to get my mutiple trays of dwarf mondo grass. However, my recent trip to STH was quite fruitful as they have expanded into pottery and plants. Just absolutely love their selection of beautiful planters, especially the color options. Some of the designs were definitely not your typical cookie-cutter pottery. After entering the park, there is a guard by the tent who will direct you to STH. When I drove up to the visitor parking lot, I was greeted by a very friendly manager Danelle (I think correct spelling) who asked me if I needed additional assistance or should she come back to check on me. Needless to say, I will return for a few more loads of stuff I want but couldn't get based on not having the proper measurements with me. My bad...but it's nice to drive back into this agricultural park so I can enjoy the vast looking vistas in serenity. read more

I came last week because I just needed (2) sheets of El Toro to match my yard. We had some dying patches (sigh) with the pains of having a new yard. When I got here, I was greeted by the manager (I forgot her name, but she was SUPER helpful and informative). She answered all my questions thoroughly. Even though I was just purchasing (2) sheets of El Toro she explained how I can upkeep my current lawn and was detailed in her answers. She even loaded my car herself and made sure not to get mud on my carpeted trunk. Never once has she made me feel like I was bothering her throughout the process. I bought 1,000 sf of el toro grass sod. The grass was complete junk with 200 sf completely unusable and falling apart. It was all cut at different depths. Southern Turf refused to offer a refund or even replace the unusable sod. Their customer service is terrible. Don't waste your money. Buy from someone else. read more

Called to get grass but they said I need to cal the day before. None of the grass samples in front are for sale. Lame

This place is terrible and the customer service is awful. Came by for some grass and they told me to try back in a month. Kept calling and leaving messages after a month but never got a response. So I just showed up over there one day and they said they have the grass, just give them an hour to get it and they'd call me when it's ready. This was at 11am. Several hours go by and no one calls. I call and no one answers. So just show up again before closing and they have the grass ready and sitting on a pallet. Thanks for not calling me and not responding. I really wanted the grass, especially after waiting a month so I just bought it. Definitely try and buy from someone else, this place doesn't deserve business. read more

I purchased grass from Southern Turf Hawaii, end of April, worst mistake total waste of hundreds of dollars. It was delivered, the guy who delivered it was really nice, explained how to take care of it. It was delivered the day I purchased it over the phone. This is all the positive compliments I have for this business, it goes downhill from here. I called and spoke with the office this manager Daniella ?, 3 times and let her know that my grass was all but dead she said she was call me back, she took her sweet time, 1week. I sent 2 more emails with pictures of my grass finally got a call back from the owner telling me that he would not warrant a live product. I explained to him that my landscaper said that the grass looks like it might have come with insects. He said that it was the landscapers fault, which it wasn't the rest of my yard is fine and healthy. He said if I noticed something wrong with the product we should have called within 3 days he wouldn't want to product over 5 weeks old. So between the purchase of the sod (El Toro zoysia) and paying my landscaper I'm out over $1,200. Not worth their salt if they won't stand behind their product. I live in Ewa Beach, we have a small backyard, and I spent alot of time making it look nice. The only thing missing was grass! I searched the web and went to Home Depot, etc.. looking for anyone to help. I found this site, and saw their prices were more competitive then most. IF ( only 2 employees) they answer the phone, get everything you can at that time. If you have to call again... which I did, to order/buy sod... I left a message on the machine, stating I wanted to pick up some sod. I knew the type and how much.... I waited 4 hrs, no return call??? I called again, and got a real person.. ordered my sod, and had to wait another 2 hours before it would be ready for pick up? Now its past 2pm.. nice and warm outside- drive to Mililani to the tucked away, camoflaged Sod Farm... Picked up my sod... which was cut all beveled and uneven lenghths?? I was told improper watering instructions, as I found out later when it was browning out? It was too late for most of it, as a 'dormant grass' had taken over my nice new lawn within 8 weeks!! I called them today, I admitted defeat, my beautiful Seashore Paspalum was beyond help... it never rooted properly, my guess..... watering routine?! I called them at 10am left a message (death zone) with my info, of which they are familiar with.... No return call???? Its past 4:30... they're closed, and I'm out $400 worth of sod. Be damn sure not leave this property without doing a through check with a witness of the quality and quantity check. Be sure you take a picture of everything that you ordered and paid for If you ordered sprig of grass open up the bags to ensure the grass is fresh and totally green. My order had lots of the sprigs that were not freshly picked. I ordered 10 bushels of sprig and received 7. The fiasco: Friday, I picked up my order the employee loads my van with two full bags and another with one-third full. On Sunday I realize I do not have enough sprigs so on Monday I phone and spoke to the woman manning the office told her I did not have enough sprigs. i give her the receipt invoice number and tells me that there were three bushels to a bag and that I received a total of three full bags and on that is one-third full. I then tell her that I am missing one full bag. She tells me she has to phone the boss and will call me back. After a few minutes I call back she tells that the boss told her that he loaded the correct amount of bags in my van. I told the woman that the employee loaded the bags not the owner. It was a frustrating continuous back and forth with this woman who kept repeating her boss response. I got so fed up that I was raising my voice and told her I wanted to talk to her boss. She then said she would call me back. I waited few minutes call her back and she told me that her boss would call me the next day! This was two-thirty p.m.! I was so furious that I told her I was coming to their office and I wanted to see a full bags of sprigs waiting for me or I will call the police. When I arrived the bag of grass was not there. My wife tried to negotiate a settlement with the owner on the phone but he stood with his position that he personally carried four bags (remember woman said the owner told her that he load the van). to the front of the office. Then the talk started into shouting at each other. I then called 911 to request for a police officer as this dispute was escalating. The owner told over the phone to get off his property! I told him the dispatcher told me to stay in the parking lot and wait for the police officer. One of the employee told me the police officer wanted me to meet him at property security station the entrance of this ag park. Told the police officer what happened, however, he could not take any action. Lesson learned: I paid $418.48 for ten bushels but received seven. read more
