I honestly came to this mall with really low expectations. This mall definitely stands the test of time and I do find it really unique. This mall is what I consider an "open layout mall" it's a moderate sized, one floor mall with a big box store in the middle. It was really cool walking into a Best Buy, which is something I've never got to experience at a mall before. Plenty of unique stores I've never heard of that offered tons of options. This place is absolutely packed and over 90 percent of the mall stores are fully occupied which is great. Plenty of big and small name stores. Overall this mall is a solid recommendation. read more

Thee Downriver Mall,,, now that the economy has gotten A LOT BETTER. This mall has now done some great renovations. New businesses came in,, they've turned fountains into modern seating areas with trendy high chairs and plugs to power your devices. I've seen this mall at it's worst and I could definitely say it's leaps and bounds a lot nicer now. Now that there's a lot of Draw to come here,,, and not just Macy's or JCP. There's even a big bad new glistening movie theatre in the Mall,,, well, not really in the mall, but that spot used to be Mervins and it WAS connected to the mall. Electronics over at where the food court used to be. There's a few food options, but only a couple restaurants of substance. I come here to browse around usually. Just window shopping from time to time... and yes,,, there is such a thing as Window shopping. That's when youre just wanting to hang out and not really in the mode to spend anything, which usually doesn't work all the time in my case. Anyways, enough about me and more of the mall. This is definitely a really good mall now. Yes it might not carry any of the extreme posh brands, but it does have all the essentials of everything that I want. Plus this is one of the malls that are at striking distance from my house. Plenty of parking spots and shops to spend your money on. Thank you for taking your time to read my review. This mall doesn't offer much for me anymore. I typically only visit a few stores like Spencer's, Payless and Hot Topic (and I can't remember the last time I bought an item from any of them.) I never find myself saying "Man, I really need to go to the mall." There just aren't any stores selling items I can't get elsewhere. I do love me some Orange Julius, even though the dudes working the place always seem like they want to kill themselves. Murder-suicide, anyone? It's definitely the place for you if you need an eye appointment, fattening junk food not found in a convenience store, your nails or hair did (yea, I said it...) or just some wicked people watching. read more

I really like this mall and am suprised about some of the harsh reviews...What what? I agree it's no Somerset collection or even Twelve Oaks for that matter, but certainty not the worse and as far as I'm concerned the state of Michigan doesn't have enough malls particularly compared to other states. This is evident especially around the holidays. All that being said this mall is aiming for a comeback they have Jcpenny, Macy"s and a Best buy plus many other standard mall stores. There is also a Kohl's adjacent in same parking forum as well as Target, Babies r us and more. Maybe I have a soft spot for them my Gram worked at the mall and as a child I have many fond memories of going to see my Gram at work and hitting the Kresge cafeteria with Gram for lunch...I dunno but no matter I love this mall and hope they make it. It would be sad if they don't. If you happen to be downriver give it a shot you might be surprised and love it almost as much as I do. read more

I have never been to the Southland Center, judging from some of the older reviews, it had some issues here and there. Personally, a friend of mine had flown in to Detroit so we got a room right around the corner from the airport. While we were in town for a beard and mustache competition, we still had plenty of time for me to show the sites. Since Dearborn and Taylor were in the middle of our hotel and where we needed to be in downtown Detroit, we decided to check out a few places outside of our trip to Ann Arbor. We had to be out of our room by 11am and the flight didn't go out until 4pm, so we had a few hours to kill. I needed to get a new piercing ring, so I figured I would find a Spencer's or Hot Topic; some place like that. That led me to the Southland Center in Taylor. The way the GPS took us, it felt like it was the back way and this shopping center was some sort of hidden destination. The parking lot seemed adequate and clear. Inside the mall, it was relatively quiet, but it was also midweek. The atmosphere was really trendy. There were a lot of couches and chairs in seating areas which were filled with students and their earbuds. It didn't take long for me to find a jewelry place. And we decided to roam around some more. Found some really cute shops and it was here I was introduced to PMA Designer Oils and Auntie HoneyBee's homemade line of lotions, potions, and soaps. Heaven. One other thing that really stood out to me was the section which connected the mall to the Best Buy. I have never seen a Best Buy connected to a mall like that, so that in itself was pretty interesting. But the transitions area, complete with bathrooms, also had benches and a nice relaxing pond and waterfall. read more

As a Downriver guy, this has/always will be my go to local mall. The progress that this mall has made over the past 5 years is worth seeing. At one time, people questioned whether this mall would remain open. Now, names like Starbucks, Pinkberry, and Zumies have moved in and added a much needed boost to the mall. I am excited that this mall is back on the rise. You can tell that safety, cleanliness, and quality storefronts are Southland's priorities. If you have not visited Southland recently, I highly encourage you consider this location as a fanatic alternatives to some of their busier competitors. read more

I've been coming here since I was a kid. The mall is on the small side, clean, and they have all your basic stores. Nothing too exciting. I like Macy's, Sephora in JcPenny, and Ulta. I'm happy that their putting in a H&M. (Might be in by now) I've never had a problem with employees or shoppers at this mall. It's a good basic mall for my basic mall needs. read more

To start... Parking is atrocious. Don't come here with anything larger than a yugo unless you want to park across the street at the Target store. I haven't been to Southland in quite some time and it looks like it hasn't been improved in years. That said, EVERYTHING is under construction. The parking lot is barricaded in several areas, the interior of the mall looks like a war zone, and getting around the middle section of the mall is like a maze. Maybe I just have fond memories of this place from childhood. Maybe my memories are better than reality. I'm just so saddened to find it in such disarray. I did stop in the Macys store only to find shelves that were ransacked and unshoppable. I left. I found a few deals as some clothing stores for the kids but the selection was very limited. There is a large Best buy store that seems to be doing well and a very pretty entrance on the interior. I hope the construction makes a huge difference and helps to bring Southland to a new level. I am not a fan of Mall's in the first place...But there are times, when you have to go to the Mall.....But make sure its not Southland.....They dont have much of a selection to begin with...But the stores they do have, have a poor selection....The Macy's (formely a Marshall Fields) is just awful.....Alot fo the stores are trashed..People must have no tought of the retail employee's, because they just throw merchndise all over...... The mall itself is rather nice. Rue 21 is where my problem is. They falsely accused me of trying to spend fake money. I had to call the store, that I was in, and ask to speak to the manager because the employee making the accusations, refused to call. I'm extremely disappointed with the situation. I never even got an apology from manager or associate. read more

I been Coming there for years and excited to see the mall revitalized by adding a theater ,New stores and restaurants.Regarding the parking situation.It's only temporary so no need to whine about it.there's still plenty of parking on both sides of the mall and southland I music isn't the only store in the mall.and don't call the stores ghetto or knick knack stores.There's so many others.such as torrid,Francesca,h&m,Macy's,etc.It's not a failing mall by any means,the only thing I see is improving itself..I agree the food court should had stayed because it has offered many more food choices than it does now.. read more

I really like this mall, even though most seem to not like it and compare it to higher end malls. It is what it is. The mall is not pretending to be a pretentious, upscale place like Somerset or Lakeside. It has lower end stores, and downriver clientele. Which is fine. I love the sales at Macy's (i can almost always find a suit on their clearance racks), NY and Co (great selection and super nice employees), and the Victoria's Secret has a fabulous selection as well. The Sunglass Hut employees are always really helpful and friendly as well. Anyway, if you need something quick and not higher end and live in the area, this mall is great. Oh, the addition of Best Buy was great as well. Love having it at the mall instead of down the street. read more

I was here on Wednesday before all the black Friday madness (mind you people were already camped out in front of Best Buy in their tents ordering pizza). I stopped in to get an outfit for the evening and noticed a few differences. There are a few small stores popping up in the vacant areas, some of them being little snack shoppes. They've expanded "Lids" and made it into the size of an actual store rather than a closet. I just wish that some of these stores they were putting in were more mainstream, not that I don't like the uniqueness...they just don't last, and something new will take its place in a month or so. I did find exactly what i was looking for though, so with that i can't complain. I'm hooked on my new red colored skinny jeans, ow ooooww. read more

We're new to the area and wanted to check out the mall this last Sunday and it was closed. What mall has their shops open at noon on a Sunday? This review is not about southland mall it is towards Spencer's and there stupid return policy. I made a cash purchase and came a k to return some items 2 weeks later (3 shot glasses clearly unused still in package, 3 bachelorette pins still on the package, and a bachelorette game still in package and all were sealed) Since I paid in cash I could only be store credit but if I would of paid with my card they could have returned me my money, absolutely ridiculous! My refund was $41 and change The associate gave me 2 stupid reasons,1.being because of the items they sell what if they were used (then you should have a "if opened no return or store credit" policy) 2. Because they don't carry that much cash...my refund was $41 freaking dollars! You don't have $40 in your drawer!!? So ridiculous don't think I will ever shop there again Never heard of such a ridiculous policy read more

The Southland mall is great, however I got my nails done last month at the nail salon in the mall it was absolutely horrible I walk in I tell the guy can I get my nails done I told him the type of nails that I wanted he rudely said , okay sit down will call your name when it's time when I finally get called the lady doing my nails was very rude she was not talkative it felt like she was very anti-social I mean you shouldn't be working at a place if you're not friendly at all first she does my nails uneven then when she told me to go wash my hands to take off all the dust so she can paint them I kindly asked where's the sink she said it's over there can you see it then I asked her do you have any paper towel she's like here it goes right here open your eyes again very rude I said what do I do with this because it was a wash rag she said you see that basket and when she painted my nails she messed up on a spot and didn't care to fix it she said it costs $5 extra to fix it I said that is ridiculous don't even worry about it and about two weeks later my aunt went to go get her nails done the guy doing her nails caught her ahole because she said this place was very rude I've learned my lesson from coming here it was very disappointing because I come to this mall all the time and getting my nails done there was just horrible service read more

It's an okay mall, not very nice looking but it's alright. Doesn't have that many food places for you to sit and eat. What really bugs me is that Kohls is not connected to this mall even though they're really close. I usually go for JCPenny and Sephora and that's it. read more

Discovered this mall by chance while looking for its neighboring babies r us! It has most of my favourite mall stores including hnm, macys, ny and co, ulta to name a few! Hubby was so excited about best buy he did not even complain about spending 3 hours there. New restaurants, plenty seating areas, and cant wait for pink berry to open! I used to work at South land for several years back in the day when it was nice after Mervyn's went out of business so did the rest of the mall a lot of stores pulled out and what you are left with is what you see now. It is good if you need to grab a quick video game, or some clothes from one of the more popular stores like American Eagle. As the other reviewer said Olga's kitchen is in there and they still have good food. Other than that tho you will not find a whole lot at this mall. This is a small failing mall. Southland music is the only reason I ever go. I get that they are trying to reinvent themselves but it it just bland. Ghetto jewelry retailers and an assortment of failing nic nac stores. Go in, get what you need and leave. read more

Recently was in the Taylor area and I typically don't shop at Southland because I live near Grosse Pointe. However I wanted to kill some time so I dropped in the Sephora inside JcPenny and I was pretty much invisible. I would hate to say it was a race thing but I'm not sure. The one girl was heavy set very talkative to everyone expect me. When she wasn't talking to other shoppers (which was VERY few) she was talking or training her coworker about something. Neither one of them spoke to me or anything but greeted and helped everyone else. I stayed in the store for about 45mins just walking around trying makeup. Until I just couldn't take it! I have worked in retail management for over 10 years and the next time I am ever experiencing such a moment I will speak up because that's very rude and sad. I spend so much money in Sephora but never will I spend a penny in that one! I honestly want to make a second trip to see if I receive the same "welcoming" experience! I just might! read more

Not a big mall, so not a lot of stores. I won't fault the center for the stores being generally over-priced. The reason it loses stars is because of the clientelle. I know it's not the shopping center's fault that a bunch of trash is walking the halls, but it's one of the many reasons I only go here if I have to. After experiencing other malls, Southland has no selection at all. This mall has a ton of jewelry stores who are always going out of business. Macy's carries such a small selection of items compared to their other stores at for example Twelve Oaks Mall. Wish they would get some quality stores in there but like everything else downriver it is going down the tube. read more
